Summary

The RTX 3080 has a strong reputation among Reddit users as a capable card that still holds up well for 1440p and 4K gaming, especially when purchased at the right used price. Community sentiment is generally positive toward the card's raw performance, but increasingly mixed when it comes to value — most users now recommend the 4070 Super over a used 3080 unless the price gap is significant. The 10GB VRAM version draws the most criticism, with several users reporting texture and performance issues in demanding titles at higher resolutions. Overall, it's seen as a solid option for budget-conscious buyers who can find one under $400, but not a smart buy close to 4000-series pricing.

Pros

  • Capable of 4K gaming in many titles with DLSS Quality, delivering 60fps+ on demanding games — owners report solid performance even in recent AAA releases
  • FSR 3 frame generation mod works on the 3080, giving access to frame gen benefits without needing a 40-series card
  • Strong 1440p performance with consistent 100fps+ at ultra/high settings across most games, even newer titles
  • Excellent overclocking headroom with undervolting — users report running at 1860MHz @ 0.850v, bringing power draw down to 200-240W from the stock 320W
  • AIB variants (EVGA FTW3, ASUS ROG Strix) offer significantly better cooling and quieter operation compared to the Founders Edition, with 30-40°C temps reported
  • Founders Edition is the most compact 2-slot design at 285mm, making it ideal for smaller cases where AIB cards won't fit

Cons

  • 10GB VRAM is increasingly tight — multiple users hit the limit in 2024 titles at 1440p ultrawide and 4K with high textures, causing stutters rather than outright crashes
  • High power consumption at stock settings (320W+) compared to the 4070 Super which matches or exceeds its performance at significantly lower wattage
  • Used market pricing in many regions (£400+ UK, €550+ EU) makes it hard to justify over a new 4070 Super, which offers better features, warranty, and DLSS 3
  • No native DLSS 3 frame generation — requires AMD's FSR 3 mod which can be inconsistent and janky depending on the game
  • Cards from the crypto era raise legitimate concerns about wear, though most evidence suggests mining cards are not significantly degraded if properly cooled
  • AIB card sizes (up to 323mm for MSI Gaming X Trio) create serious case compatibility issues — many mid-tower cases with front radiators are limited to the FE or EVGA XC3

Is the 10GB Version Still Good Enough?

Reddit owners are split — many report no issues at 1440p with settings tweaks, while others have hit the VRAM wall in newer titles at ultrawide or 4K resolutions.

The 3080 Is Only Worth It Under $400

Community consensus has settled: with the 4070 Super available new, a used 3080 only makes sense if the price gap is $150 or more — otherwise the warranty, efficiency, and DLSS 3 tip the scales.

The FSR 3 Mod Changed the Equation

Several 3080 owners cite the AMD FSR 3 frame generation mod as a reason to hold off upgrading — it brings competitive frame rates to Ampere cards in supported titles, extending the card's useful life.

To be honest I would rather buy 4070 super or second hand 4070ti rather than 3080 if the price difference will be under 100 because of lower power consumption, dlss 3.0 and frame generation, only reason when I would buy 3080 would be if I found really good deal that is no scam

ngl the founders edition will very likely be the best looking card for a while. That thing looks amazing!

3080 is a good card but look for the 12gb version and as others have said aim for a 4070 super if you can stomach the cost.

This card is the catch 22 card. Gamers either get a bad deal money-wise (for the fantasy MSRP) or gamers don't buy it and the LHR gets accidentally cracked. Either way cha-ching for Nvidia.

The most overpriced card ever that is going to sell out instantly regardless.

Getting reasonable cards in the gamers' hands wasn't part of the deal. Nothing like a 2%-per-$100 improved card cannibalizing chips for pending RTX 3080 orders.

Just get a 4070S. It's not that much more than the 3080 and you get a warranty, better performance, DLSS3, better efficiency etc

I have 2 pcs, one has a 3080 and one has 4080. 3080 is very capable and aside from frame gen which you may or may not use, 3080 runs mostly all games at 4k min 60fps. If you play multiplayer fps, frame gen is useless as it introduces lag. Buying new today however I would go for 40 series unless you see much of a price difference.

I agree, however needs to be said that FSR3 frame generation is still available if you have a 3080. I'm playing Cyberpunk with FrameGen on my 3080. Performance is great and the card is still very good. I still agree it should be a pretty good deal to make it worth it over a 4070S.

As someone with a 3080 I don't see the point in upgrading this generation I'll most likely at wait for at least the 1st round of the 5000 series if not the later refreshes.

I guess this means I'm probably getting an EVGA XC3 if I get a 3080. I have an NCASE m1 v6.1, so the absolute max GPU length for me is 290mm. The good news is it looks like one of the less gaudy 3000 series cards.

I snatched a 3080 12GB about a year ago for 400 euros and I'm totally happy with it at 3440x1440. I've got an undervolt set to 1860MHz and I'm usually hovering between 240-270w with that depending on the game. The prices you quoted seem kind of high, so I'd look around a bit more to see if you can find one for less. For 400 euros, I'm more than satisfied with the performance.

3080 is a beast. Depends on what price you get. When the vram usage is full, 3080 will run better than 4080 because 3080 has more bit bus. If vram usage is not full then 4080 runs better.

Used GPU's are still overpriced in the UK for the risk you're taking on.

They are, fundamentally, the same product. Basically, Nvidia makes the actual graphics processor chip. They sell those to other companies like EVGA, MSI, Asus, and Gigabyte who build those chips onto their own cards. These companies are known as AIB partners and so their cards are called partner cards. Nvidia also builds their own cards with these processors, which they call Founder's Editions.

I upgraded from my 1080 to a 3080 and I am very happy with the purchase. The 20xx series was a bad buy over the 10xx, but the performance plus bells and whistles of the 30xx — DLSS, HEVC, and more powerful raytracing hardware — made this a good upgrade, crazy market aside.

PC building community: small form factor is in, huge towers are out! GPU industry: really long GPUs it is!!! I imagine this is actually going to hurt their sales to some degree. Obviously you're not going to buy a card that physically can't fit in your rig unless you're also willing to buy a new case.

I would have jumped on it with 16GB VRAM, and non-ridiculous prices. But this is just the last nail in the coffin.

3080 10gb owner here, i play every game at 4K dlss and almost every game on ultra/high and always 100fps+, some games uses all of the vram but i have never had a game crash on me due to vram running out. At 1440p the card will run every max settings without issues. Also the frame generation mod from amd works wonders but still i would go with a 4070 super for not too much more money.

I just bought a used Dell 3080 for a good deal and it's doing great playing cyberpunk with an ultra wide, path tracing and everything and I just leave dlss on auto. Looks great and plays great. I figure this will hold me over until the 5 series comes out.

As a 3080 owner, expect that model to hit the streets in larger volume when the 4070TIS and 4080S are available. Nothing to complain about with an RTX3080 really and I game on 4K. (does require DLSS Performance)

The biggest difference between the 3080 FE and the 3080 AIB models is mainly aesthetics and cooling, they all perform relatively the same. The FE and the EVGA XC3 are the only 2 slot sized cards I believe.

People keep recommending 12GB cards over the 3080 due to only having 10GB, but honestly it's not much of a difference. Bump your textures down from Ultra to High and keep on gaming. In 2020 and 2021 I was gaming in 4K native 60fps just fine no matter what game I threw at it. In 2023/24, my 3080 still holds up well, though I'm now gaming in 1440p and upscaling to fill my 4K monitor.

Used a 3080 for a few months last year, this comment is accurate. If you can get one for $400 like I did it's a really good card. Always get newer if you can, but it's not gonna be terrible if you don't.

Normal 4070 is basically a 3080 with better features. Also, better assumes that ALL 3000 series were mined to hell if that matters for you.

Woah lot of haters on the 3080ti... I'm using one with my aw3423dwf and play 1440p 165hz getting anywhere from 120 to 165 fps on my AAA games (paired with 7800x3d)! Great value if you can find one used.

450 ish dollar 3080 10/12 gb is a banger. So are the 6800xts as well. But if you want the latest then basically 4070 is the lowest you can go to get a good experience.

IMO used prices are currently way too high for what you get. I'd get whatever 4000 series fits in your budget and call it a day.

I say get the new card or stretch your budget to the 4070 Ti Super, which will age much better than a 12GB card at £580. You want the assurance that your GPU can max anything at UWQHD for the next couple of years, whereas 12GB could be maxed out in some games today at this res with RT on.

I got a TUF 3080 for $699 when they were first released. $1200 retail for a 3080ti is insane when you're getting just an ~8% increase in performance. Even most youtube reviewers are saying don't buy it as it's not worth it.

As a fellow 3080 owner, FSR3 frame gen mod can be janky at times, but when it works, it's magic.

I have a 3080 and game at 1440p. I have already found 2 games that I have to tweak settings to avoid hitting the 10gb limit. I definitely would not consider a 3080 10 or 12gb for 1440p UW.

Don't get 3080. Better grab a 4070s. Ampere will get obsolete way sooner than Ada due to lack of FG, which will be necessary in many newer games soon. 10gb is also kinda MEH for QHD

I can get 3080 Zotac Amp Holo for 434 euro. 4070S is for 632 euro. I have now 3060ti. Based on benchmarks I will get +30% fps boost. 4070S vs 3080 is cca 15% fps boost. I think its not worth 200 euro difference.

Like others said, EVGA cards have great cooling, and are clocked significantly higher. My EVGA is 30-40C and clocks around 600mhz higher than the FE.

I ended up going with the Aorus Master 3080 (12GB) recently and at 1440p have had NO issues with any game. Save for Dragons Dogma 2, but that seems to be an issue for most.
