Summary

The RTX 4080 Super is a high-end GPU that Reddit users consistently describe as a powerhouse for 1440p and 4K gaming, capable of maxing out virtually any title. Overall sentiment is positive among owners, though the card's value proposition generates heated debate — most agree it's only worth buying at the right price, particularly when compared to newer 50-series options like the 5070 Ti. It's best suited for enthusiasts who want top-tier rasterization performance, excellent ray tracing, and DLSS support without jumping to 4090-level pricing. The card shines brightest in demanding single-player titles like Cyberpunk 2077 with path tracing, and owners frequently report quiet operation and impressive thermals.

Pros

  • Handles any game maxed out at 1440p and 4K with ease — users running Cyberpunk 2077 path tracing, Alan Wake 2, and other demanding titles report consistently smooth performance
  • Excellent ray tracing performance that outpaces AMD's RX 7900 XTX, with DLSS and Frame Generation support adding headroom for the future
  • Quiet operation and great thermals across most AIB models — multiple users report sub-65°C temps even under sustained heavy load
  • Undervolting yields meaningful gains; some owners report 10–13% performance improvements with reduced power draw, making it efficient on 750W PSUs
  • Strong longevity — owners coming from 3070 Ti and 3080 report a substantial leap in demanding workloads, and the card is expected to remain competitive for 4–6 years
  • Wide selection of AIB models (PNY, Gigabyte Gaming OC, MSI Gaming X Trio, Founders Edition) with most offering solid cooling, low coil whine, and competitive pricing

Cons

  • Value is entirely price-dependent — at anything above $850–$900, the 5070 Ti offers comparable rasterization performance with newer architecture, DP 2.1, GDDR7, and Multi Frame Generation
  • Only a marginal ~2–5% improvement over the original RTX 4080, making it a poor upgrade for existing 4080 owners
  • No performance uplift in CPU-bound scenarios — users playing competitive titles like CS2 or Valorant at high FPS saw little benefit upgrading from 30-series without also upgrading their CPU
  • Coil whine is a lottery across brands — Founders Edition, ASUS TUF, and some PNY units have been reported with audible whine, while other units of the same models are dead silent
  • Older architecture compared to Blackwell — lacks Multi Frame Generation, newer tensor cores for future DLSS scaling, and DP 2.1 for high-refresh 4K monitors
  • Used and refurbished pricing has climbed significantly; new units are scarce and often sold above MSRP, making the 5070 Ti a better new-purchase option in many markets

Still a Beast, But Context Is Everything

Owners consistently praise the 4080 Super's real-world performance — maxing out demanding titles, staying cool, and running quietly. But the experience gap only shows up in the right games at the right resolution. CPU-bound users and those on 1080p with competitive titles see little benefit.

The Price Window That Makes or Breaks It

Reddit's consensus is clear: the 4080 Super is excellent hardware at the wrong moment. The 5070 Ti has closed the rasterization gap while offering a newer platform, and most users say they'd only recommend the 4080 Super if it's meaningfully cheaper — a condition that's increasingly hard to meet.

Which Brand? Reddit Says: Just Buy the Cheapest 3-Fan Model

An entire thread dedicated to AIB comparisons landed on a surprisingly pragmatic conclusion — performance differences between brands are within 1–2%, coil whine is a random defect that can hit any SKU, and the best strategy is to find the cheapest reputable 3-fan model. PNY, Gigabyte Gaming OC, and MSI Gaming X Trio came up most often as safe bets.

I got a 4080 super and it's been amazing so far. Honestly games and shit nowadays are so poorly optimized that even with good hardware you can get some pretty poo performance.

According to comments, when Nvidia cards are still sitting on shelves it means they're overpriced and gamers don't want them, and when they're sold out it's intentionally low stock or bots.

This isn't news, this is just an older product phasing out and a new one phasing in.

I literally just did the same upgrade, with a 12700k as well. I definitely noticed a difference, but I play at 3440x1440. I upgraded mainly because I wanted to max out cyberpunk and it's night and day.

So, it was the 4070 Super that was the star of the show all along?

4080s is still solid but I'm not paying more then what you can get a 5070ti for.

4070 Super biggest perf increase for the same price. 4070 Ti Super smaller than expected perf increase but more VRAM. 4080 Super negligible perf increase with a price cut.

You already know the answer. The cpu is causing a bottleneck for max gains there. And you don't need a 4080 for those games. It will show its power when you play graphically intense games.

To be honest man they're almost all the same. Find the best deal and go with it. You'll read comments like 'this only' or 'anything but this' but these are individual cases. Every brand will have issues. Find the best deal you can and pull the trigger.

Man what a ride aey Nvidia. First they start with calling the 4070 Ti 4080 but then Nvidia gets Super roasted and then they call it the 4070 Ti for $800. Then came the 4080 for $1200 for which they again got roasted so they release a very slightly better version of the 4080 and call it 4080 Super and reduce the price by $200.

Pny 4080super xlr8 owner here. Overclocks well and is quiet as hell no whine, no fan noise. The hottest I've seen it get is 67°C at 315 watts and 1410rpm on the fans.

Literally anything but ASUS. MSI has treated me well in contrast. Very good temps and thermals even if the average is slightly higher than others, there isn't a huge delta between them meaning good contacts and proper heat management.

Highly recommend PNY; literally the only issue with it is if you don't get the RGB one you can't change or turn off the glowing white PNY symbol on the side.

The Gigabyte Gaming OC has a great solution to fix any sag, it has a bracket that attaches to the case standoffs and is solid. The card itself is great, runs cool and quiet.

Depends how much cheaper. 5070 Ti will be the better card in the long run, especially due to DP 2.1 and newer tensor cores that will provide better scaling on future DLSS tech. MFG is something you can benefit from right away.

I got a founders edition 4080 super. I've read a lot of posts saying it has bad coil whine but I've had it since release and haven't had a single bit. Super quiet and the temps are amazing. Stays around 60c while gaming and able to overclock very well.

I think so, if you can find it at an appreciable price. I don't always play with MFG with my 5080. The floatiness/latency is noticeable on the most demanding games. I would argue single frame gen is all you need over the next 3 or so years.

I got a PNY card since I heard many good things about them this generation, including low coil whine, but my unit has a very noticeable whine under load. Not quite enough to get me to return it, but still annoying nonetheless.

Microcenter has refurbished 4080S for $1k. I love my 4080S. Still the third best consumer GPU out there, in some cases. But pretty close to stock 5080 in many cases, and #4 isn't so bad.

I think unless you have a 240 hertz or more monitor, a 4080 is faster and a better choice. So you can justify paying more than 750. Also, a new 5070ti doesn't cost 750. It's 750 plus tax.

Anything apart from Asus, I had the tuf 4080 super and took 5 months of arguing to get it repaired due to coil whine, then after that they lost the card during shipping which took another month arguing — they sent me a new card after telling them I'll seek legal action. Worst customer service I've experienced.

I bought myself aorus master a couple of weeks ago. Great temps, I overclocked it hard to 2985mhz, peaked at 64C in maxed out alan wake 2. Very quiet although you need to set your own fan curve in afterburner, stock profile is too loud. Honestly great gpu.

I recently upgraded myself to the 4080s from a 4070ti. Before doing so I also upgraded my monitor to a Samsung g9 oled 5120x1440 240hz. Upgrading my monitor first I tried the 3070ti for a while but it struggled, so the move to the 4080s made a noticeable difference. I could actually ramp everything right up and make use of the additional hz.

Depends on the price, 4080 and 4080 Super is definitely a solid card. Originally the 4080 was terrible value vs the 4070ti or even the 4090, but it's still one of the top cards available.

Cheapest one — it works like that with basically all cards, all you need to avoid are really underspecced coolers. Just sort cards by price starting from lowest and google review of that model, if it doesn't overheat it's fine.

4080 super is a good card. It will last you 3-5 years easy. Even more if you lower some settings.

play cyberpunk 2077 2k PT mode, you will see the real 4080, not some easy games. Under 2k PT, 3070 ti would probably give you 15 fps, if not crashed. 4080 will give you 100 fps.

I made a similar jump — 12700k with a 3080 FE to a 4080 Super FE. I play at 1440p and yes, for most FPS games there is no noticeable performance improvement. But there is a noticeable difference with newer single player titles and I want those to look as good as possible.

It is a great card. I built my rig in February and I only game at 1080p on a 144Hz monitor. Some may call this an overkill, but I do not have to use any DLSS, and it will serve me hopefully just as long as my GTX1070 did (circa 9 years).

hell yeah it is. provided its price isn't super inflated. it trades blows with a 5070 TI in raw raster, and the 5080 Super is only on average 11 percent faster. Still a very solid card.
