Summary

The RTX 5090 is Nvidia's flagship consumer GPU, drawing intense community attention across Reddit for its raw performance and extreme scarcity at MSRP. Owners report outstanding results for 4K high-refresh gaming and local AI/LLM workloads, with 32GB of GDDR7 making it uniquely capable for running large models on consumer hardware. The sentiment is sharply divided: those who own one tend to love it, while a loud majority resents the $1,999 MSRP being effectively unobtainable without bots, Discord trackers, or paying $3,000+ to scalpers. This is a card for high-income enthusiasts, AI researchers, and content creators who skipped multiple generations β€” not a practical upgrade for someone coming from a 4090.

Pros

  • Delivers top-tier 4K gaming performance with enough headroom to run titles at max settings and high refresh rates without upscaling, satisfying users who skipped the 40 series
  • 32GB GDDR7 VRAM on a 512-bit bus makes it the go-to consumer option for running large local LLMs (40B+ parameter models) via Ollama and similar tools
  • Founders Edition is compact enough for SFF builds β€” its 2-slot form factor fits cases where even some 4080 AIB cards wouldn't go
  • Cooling on the FE is well-regarded; users with 4080S FE report similar vapor chamber + dual-fan designs running quiet and cool around 60Β°C under load
  • Strong resale value retention β€” used 5090 FEs regularly trade above MSRP, with 4090 FEs still commanding over $2,200 as a reference point
  • Dual-PCB design opens the door to potential memory modding (up to 96GB theoretically), which could give it extraordinary long-term value for AI workloads

Cons

  • MSRP is a fantasy for most buyers β€” FE cards vanish within seconds to minutes at $1,999, while AIB models routinely sell for $3,000–$5,000 from scalpers
  • 575W TDP is alarming even with a good PSU; users report needing 1000W+ systems to run it comfortably alongside a high-end CPU
  • Coil whine on the Founders Edition is rated notably bad by reviewers β€” described as an 8/10 severity, audible under high framerates even inside a case
  • The 12VHPWR connector fire/melting concern remains a real hesitation point for many buyers, with at least one documented burn incident circulating Reddit
  • The 5080 handles most 4K gaming workloads at nearly half the price β€” only extreme edge cases like 4K 240Hz or large VRAM AI tasks truly justify the 5090 premium
  • Availability outside the US (especially Europe and Australia) is even worse, with prices frequently 40–60% above USD MSRP when converted

What Are 5090 Owners Actually Using It For?

Reddit threads reveal the real 5090 buyer is split between 4K enthusiast gamers with disposable income and AI/LLM researchers who need 32GB VRAM for running large models locally. It's not the 'just for gaming' crowd driving demand.

MSRP Is Now Considered a Sale Price

The community has reached a grim consensus: finding an RTX 5090 at $1,999 requires Discord bots, paid tracking services, and luck. The new baseline expectation is $3,000+, and many are questioning whether Nvidia intentionally constrains supply.

The FE's Compact Design Is a Genuine Win for SFF Builders

Unlike most AIB 5090s pushing 3–4 slots, the Founders Edition fits in high-end SFF cases under 10 liters. For builders who've been locked out of flagship GPUs for years due to case constraints, this is the first viable option.

If by dropping they mean they are 20% over MSRP compared to 50% over.

Just a shame they decided to screw over their third party vendors over a while back because I miss EVGA and would have loved to see what they could have done with this and future cards.

This shit is ridiculous. I shouldn't have to have a discord bot to purchase a $2000 graphics card. There should be a list or something you can join and they hold it for you for 24 hours. Why did EVGA have to leave :(

Absolutely crazy all these people eager to spend $2k on a GPU still. No wonder Nvidia keeps making ridiculously over priced GPUs.

i love the aesthetics of founders edition cards, the design is a subtle reminder that it is cutting edge technology. aftermarket cards just look to gamerfied to me.

Yeah this card costs more than my whole 9070 XT/7800x3d build, can't justify it. But it's exciting that the FE is available for those that want it.

The power cable catching fire or melting is what preventing me from going Nvidia, my old Nvidia cards didn't have this problem. I'm not a loyalist to either brand, but I prefer products that last and not potentially take out another part of my machine.

I'm still waiting for my email from the Nvidia Verified Priority Access list to tell me I'm next in line, lol. (I caved and bought the gigabyte 5090 months ago)

Hmmm. I want one but I don't think it's worth 3.5 times my 9070xt.

The presence of coil squeal in any GeForce RTX 5000 graphics card can vary, depending on the degree of the issue. It becomes audible when reaching high framerates, but typically remains at a manageable level. In our experience with this specific card, the coil squeal has been very noticeable to us. So yes, the Founder edition RTX 5090 will make significant coil whine, rated 8 out of 10.

I think it's a bit more of a reflection of that we're seeing more availability of the models that are closer too msrp. This generation with the extremely lackluster xx80 card the market's kind of stuck in a very weird feedback loop. You have an eighty card that it feels like it's only point for existence is to rationalize the inflated price of the 5090.

Lmao! 'If you factor out pricing and energy consumption, it's gonna be hard to not be impressed with the GeForce RTX 5090.' Yes. Forget about price and energy usage.

It's just under double the 9070 XT in raw performance, so it's definitely not linearly scaled in terms of price/performance. However, there's really nothing else in the entire product stack that makes any more financial sense from either manufacturer between this and a 5070 Ti/9070 XT so if anyone needs more performance then this is really the only option.

Dude, let me one up you, respectfully of course. My first kid was just born. Like, just born, maybe 5 minutes ago. And they had to grab him for his vaccines and shit. So I'm all nervous cause my first born just spawned, I decided to grab my phone to keep myself busy for a minute while they clean him and prep his vaccines. Naturally I went in the subreddit and someone posted it like 5 seconds before I refreshed the page. I purchased the 5090 founders edition in like one minute.

You need a paid alert service at this point. I got away with a free alert service in December, but that was pure luck. MSRP 5090s are unobtainium.

My previous EVGA 1080ti and 2080ti ran hot and loud maxed out. Usually around 70-75c with all fans screaming. My 4080S FE runs around 60c maxed out and is whisper silent. Huge difference. I plan on always trying to snag FE cards in the future after this experience.

Bozo who spent $2500 here. And very true. I can justify it - my bills are paid and I spend most nights at my PC and it's one of my only hobbies. Compared to being a 'car guy' or literally any other hobby, 2K every few years isn't really all that much.

Best Buy completely stopped selling the 5090 FE on their website. They were not able to figure out how to avoid bots. So they strictly do word of mouth on phone or in store orders only. I called their 800 number few weeks ago and my region was sold out, the rep took my info down and said next time they come in stock, he'll reach out β€” and a couple weeks later, just as he said, he called and I placed the order.

If it becomes moddable it will have much higher relative resale value than the 4090. The 4090 can be turned into a 48gb GPU. The 5090 can be turned into 96gb (hypothetically) and even higher since it is using gddr7 there is nothing physically stopping it from matching future rtx pro GPUs.

As someone that bought a 3090 strix during the height of scalping in 2020-2021, wait until the market becomes more stable. Having the best card at this moment isn't worth it. Prices will fluctuate and you'll be better off waiting.

Man, I got it back in February and I don't think I'm doing this ever again for the 8xxx series or whatever it's called 3-4 gens down the line (if I even feel the need or want to upgrade then). It's so insane. Had to use HotStock at the time and seeing all the posts about how it should get better soon… it's about to be a whole year, when is SOON?

As someone with both: 9070 XT is absolutely incredible for anything that supports FSR4 and while it performs well in games that support FSR3, it looks noticeably worse than Nvidia's DLSS. It also can't drive enough fps in a lot of modern games without upscaling, or at least lowering settings to around medium.

I've never seen an MSRP $1999 5090 in months and I've been tracking via HotStock daily. That being said the 5080 does most of the heavy lifting the 5090 can do for 4k gaming. If you really must have the 5090 I'd recommend a prebuilt because it would be a stroke of insane luck to find any brand new 5090 for under $2900-ish.

The only ones left are founders, and id assume nvidia has pretty much stopped making them at any sort of rate to meet the current demand. Even the entry level gigabyte cards are over $3000. Its a bad fucking joke at this point. Wait for the 60s.

I bought a 5090 for $2000 at micro center. The best thing you can do is not pay above retail. If everyone refuses to buy it at inflated price they will adjust for the consumer. If you pay above retail you are throwing away your money.

Nvidia is still sending them to distributors, but you and about 60,000 other people are trying to get them as soon as they come in stock. Keep your hopes up, I managed to snag one about a month ago for MSRP.
