Summary

The AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT is a 2019 RDNA1 GPU that still earns genuine respect from its owners years after launch, particularly for 1080p and 1440p gaming. Community sentiment is mostly positive — longtime owners consistently report smooth performance across a wide library, and many say they have no compelling reason to upgrade. That said, the card's age is starting to show: it lacks hardware ray tracing, mesh shader support, and only carries 8GB of VRAM, which is increasingly a ceiling in newer titles. Early driver instability plagued the launch window, though most users agree those issues were largely resolved within months. It's best suited for budget-conscious 1080p/1440p gamers who can find one used for under $150, and less ideal for anyone chasing modern AAA titles at high settings.

Pros

  • Solid 1440p performance on a wide range of titles — owners report 60-100+ FPS at 1440p on medium-to-high settings in games like Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy (with FSR2), Doom Eternal, and Red Dead Redemption 2
  • FSR2 and FSR3 Frame Generation support breathes new life into the card — users running MSFS and Hogwarts Legacy at 1440p report 60-80 FPS with FSR2 Quality, making demanding titles playable
  • Strong overclocking potential: third-party AIB models like the Sapphire Nitro+ and ASUS ROG Strix can hit 2.1–2.3GHz with undervolting, often with minimal noise and temperature trade-offs
  • Excellent used market value — widely found for $100–$150 USD, offering performance roughly on par with an RTX 3060 or RX 6600 at a fraction of the cost
  • Highly efficient for its generation — RDNA1's 7nm process delivers good performance-per-watt compared to older Vega and competing Turing cards
  • Non-XT 5700 can be flashed to 5700 XT VBIOS for a free performance boost, making even the base model a strong budget pickup

Cons

  • No hardware ray tracing or mesh shader support — some newer titles like Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Alan Wake 2 have non-optional RT that tanks performance to unplayable levels on this card
  • Only 8GB VRAM, which is increasingly the bottleneck in modern AAA games — users expect future VRAM pressure will be the real reason they eventually upgrade, not raw performance
  • Early launch driver issues were severe — black screens, FreeSync instability, and Wattman crashes frustrated many users in 2019–2020, and some residual quirks (settings resets, refresh rate bugs) still surface occasionally
  • Reference blower cooler is notoriously bad — runs hot and loud under load, making aftermarket AIB models (Nitro+, Gaming X, ROG Strix) essentially mandatory for a pleasant experience
  • Better used alternatives exist at similar prices — an RX 6600 XT or RX 6700 XT can often be found in the same $150–$200 USD range with longer driver support, mesh shaders, and more VRAM headroom
  • FSR4 support is limited to RDNA4; XeSS 2 also performs better on newer architectures, meaning the 5700 XT will progressively fall behind on upscaling quality as newer techniques become standard

Years In, Owners Still Aren't Rushing to Upgrade

Multiple Reddit threads reveal a recurring pattern: users who bought the 5700 XT at launch keep finding reasons to hold on. From FSR extending its life in demanding titles to simply not finding a same-price card that offers a meaningful leap, the community's "wait it out" attitude has held longer than most expected for a mid-range RDNA1 card.

The 8GB VRAM Wall Is Closing In

While raw GPU performance is still respectable, the 5700 XT's 8GB frame buffer is increasingly the limiting factor. Owners report having to dial back texture settings in newer titles just to avoid stuttering, and the consensus is clear: when this card gets retired, it won't be because of core performance — it'll be because modern games are eating through VRAM faster than the card can handle.

The Reference Cooler Was a Dealbreaker — The AIB Models Weren't

AMD's own blower cooler on the reference 5700 XT became infamous quickly — Gamers Nexus called it one of the worst they'd tested. But AIB versions from Sapphire, MSI, and ASUS told a different story entirely. Owners of the Nitro+, Gaming X, and ROG Strix consistently describe quiet, cool operation even with overclocks, making the card's reputation vary wildly depending on which version you actually bought.

Tldr: good performance per dollar and performance per watt; the reference cooler is shit

5700 XT was really underrated I reckon. Sure it lacks RT but barely any games used it when it launched and Turing wasn't exactly a powerhouse at it like Ampere is. It also offered 2070S performance and could even match 2080 in some titles that were optimised for AMD, while only costing $350 USD if you waited for a deal. Great mid-high end card at the time and it's still decent today.

5700 XT is mostly a 1080p120 or 1440p60 for current-gen games. Expected performance really. It's also funny how it's just about twice of a RX 580, to the frame almost.

Funny how the tides turned. People were disappointed with the 5700s when they were announced but hyped for Zen 2. Now with reviews out there's some disappointment regarding Ryzen's clocks (despite great performance) but a nice surprise with the GPUs.

Your machine isn't shutting down, but hibernating and its acting like the display driver is crashing when it "starts", thus resets your settings. Disable Windows Fast Startup — it is by default enabled in 10/11.

In what world is it a weak GPU, talking like a $450GPU from 2019 is some budget antiquity.

It really depends on the games you want to play. The fact of the matter is, graphics doesn't equate to gameplay or fun, and I've found myself vastly enjoying games with simple graphics that can run on a potato vs. resources-chugging titles like Cyberpunk. Having said that I do want to have the option to play Cyberpunk, hence the expensive GPU that I hardly ever use.

My sister runs a 5700xt since 2019, she just started playing hogwarts legacy at 3440x1440. With fsr2 at quality, it gets between 60-80fps while still looking good. Fsr is a godsend for those cards, no reason to replace it, since new 400€ cards don't have that much more performance.

From what I've gathered the XT is way better. More overclocking headroom.

An RX 6650XT would be better. Longer driver support and more features.

Really disappointed in AMD though that the 5700 has artificially-capped maximum clocks to prevent OC-ing them to the levels of the 5700 XT. Not that the stock cooler can even handle that, but it's a bit disappointing.

I've close to 80+ 5700/5700xt cards out in the wild of which none of them have issues. The only display related errors or crashes were caused by PSU and physical memory problems.

The long and short of it is back then we were fighting the crypto mining douchebags for inventory and now we are fighting AI douchebags. Either way, prices are still jacked up and they're never seemingly coming back down. The real question isn't what's the best value, it's how can I stop myself from being screwed in the future.

I was originally planning to sell my 5700 XT, but it's a reference card with good silicon and an EK Quantum Vector water block on it w/ liquid metal and a custom vBIOS. I agree with the OP — the 5700 XT is just fine.

It's still decent for 1080p games. Definitely an upgrade! Undervolt that shit, turn up the power limit, overclock the memory, and it'll give you a nice little boost as well.

My R5 3600 x 5700XT setup from 2019 still plays everything high 1440 100-140fps no problem. Will play ultra if you're willing to drop to 60-70fps. I do keep everything overclocked and my cpu is liquid cooled though. Been my daily for 6 years and never skipped a beat.

Definitely worth it, I upgraded from a 570 to a 5700xt when it came out and it was a huge performance boost. The only thing I'd be cautious about is which cooler it has, if it's the reference model I'd avoid it since those ran super hot, I had one and replaced it with a 3rd party cooler.

You want 16G VRAM at least for near-future AAA titles. Get the 7800XT, offers excellent performance for the price. If you are on budget get RX 6800 or RX 6800 XT.

Only problem with the 5700xt is the 8gb vram. The card is fine, but running into vram limits more and more as time goes on. I mean you can just dial back settings, so you can still play games. But, when i upgrade it wont be because fps was too low, it will be because the vram is too low.

Man I still rock a 5700XT and will until I can't. It's a helluva' card and if you can even get one nowadays for dirt cheap it won't disappoint you. Would likely even be surprised. Unless it's something like Alan Wake 2 you can get by with using fsr or resolution scaling and most games look and are more than tolerable performance wise.

I've been on a 5700xt since it launched and I've been coming to the same conclusion. It's good enough for what games I play at 1440p and everything else is FAR too expensive for too small a performance boost. I had even bought a 4070 on sale and it just...wasn't faster enough to warrant the price. I returned it a few days later.

Specially after AMD patched the early driver problems. My 5700XT was quite unstable in the first 3 months, but after some driver and bios updates and a minor undervolt it now runs rock stable for 1.5 years.

Hell yes. I've got the gigabyte 5700 xt 8gb OC paired with a ryzen 5 3600 running at 1400p/165mhz and it's so damn smooth running just about everything I play at max with 60+ fps. With the latest bios/drivers from AMD, resizable BAR is enabled, too!

Hell, yeah! Still rocking my 5700 XT Liquid Devil on a 49" 5120x1440 monitor. I play Doom Eternal (Vulkan) on ultra at 90+ FPS and PGA 2K21 on high at 70+ FPS.

It's great for 1080p. Also, pro tip: you can flash the VBIOS of the 5700 XT to the non-XT and get the same performance as the XT for free.

RX 5700/XT can use FSR 3 too. Can do RT too in UE5 and other games like Avatar FOP and Crysis remaster series. The only thing it can't do at this point is play DXR games.

The way I resolved my 5700xt driver issues was to 'upgrade' to a 3060. The drop in temps from a 100C jet turbine to 70C in silence was a nice cherry on top of actually functional software.

Yeap, people love to shit on it but for 1080/1440p gaming its an amazing beast. Especially when you can clock it as high as 2.25/2.3GHz with MPT like I do.

Still running a 5700 XT myself, I just see no good upgrade path for a similar price. Perhaps RDNA4 next year will bring that, but I'm not too hopeful.

Good card if you can land one for $100. Any more than that I'd just jump on an Intel B580 for $250 if you are lucky enough to ever find one in stock. It's far more future proof.

I've been very impressed with mine. I've got an Odyssey G9 and have been amazed that I can run Red Dead II at 5120x1440 on medium to high settings and get 45-60 fps most of the time.

Doesn't support mesh shaders. Can't play Indiana Jones because that requires ray tracing. Future games will be more like this. Soon driver updates could be abandoned. It likely won't even run FSR4 properly. See what an rx 6600 or 6600xt/6650xt costs instead.

Depends on what you're playing. CoD, fortnite or any older AAA game? absolutely. Any modern game that runs UE5, you'll be struggling at 1080p. Not an unusable card by any means though.

I have 2 5700xt, they are worthless. Caused me so much grief I had to use my series s just to play xbox games because everytime I'd look up issues it would be a specific 5700xt related issue (halo infinite is a prime example). No hdmi 2.1 so choose from either hdr or 120hz, lower color, yeah the card SUCKS
