Summary

The Apple Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad earns strong praise from Mac desktop users, particularly those running their machines in clamshell mode or connected to external monitors. The Touch ID sensor is consistently cited as the standout feature, making password entry, passkey authentication, and 2FA seamless in a way that has no real alternative for desk-bound Mac users without an Apple Watch. Sentiment skews positive overall, but the keyboard is not without legitimate frustrations — the full-size layout is wide enough to push your mouse arm uncomfortably far to the right, the price feels steep for a membrane keyboard with no backlight, and some users have reported black key paint chipping over time. It occupies a very specific niche: it's the only external keyboard that gives you native macOS Touch ID, which makes it essential for some and unnecessary for others.

Pros

  • Touch ID integration is uniquely valuable for clamshell Mac users who need fingerprint authentication without reaching to a closed laptop lid — no third-party keyboard offers this
  • Typing feel closely mirrors the built-in MacBook keyboard, making the transition seamless for users already comfortable with Apple's low-travel membrane switches
  • Numeric keypad adds genuine utility for number-heavy workflows, including Excel, accounting, and data entry tasks
  • Battery life is strong and the keyboard connects reliably over Bluetooth or USB-C with no pairing issues reported across hundreds of comments
  • Black colorway matches Apple Silicon Mac aesthetics and shows key wear more slowly than the white version according to multiple users
  • Passkey adoption makes Touch ID increasingly essential — several users specifically noted upgrading because of how frequently passkeys now replace passwords

Cons

  • No backlighting at any price point — a common complaint, especially for users working in dim environments who can't touch-type
  • Full-size layout with numeric keypad is significantly wider than a TKL layout, pushing the mouse far to the right and causing ergonomic strain for right-handed users
  • Black keycap paint chips on high-use keys (S, C, A reported) after ~2 years, and Apple offers no replacement program — third-party AliExpress replacements are the workaround
  • Black colorway with Touch ID is only available in the full-size numpad version — there is no compact black Touch ID option, frustrating users who want a smaller form factor
  • Priced at $200+ for a membrane keyboard with no backlight and no multi-device pairing, making alternatives like the Logitech MX Keys (backlit, multi-device, under $100 used) look attractive
  • Touch ID reliability can degrade when routed through certain KVM switches, limiting use cases for multi-Mac setups

The Only Keyboard That Does This One Thing

Touch ID is Apple's lock-in play — no third-party keyboard offers it, and with passkeys replacing passwords at scale, many users find it's no longer optional. Some users even buy a second Magic Keyboard solely for the fingerprint sensor and type on a different board entirely.

Two Hundred Dollars for No Backlight Is a Hard Sell

The biggest recurring complaint on Reddit isn't the feel or the layout — it's the price-to-feature ratio. Competitors like the Logitech MX Keys and MX Mechanical offer backlighting, multi-device Bluetooth, and a better typing feel at a lower price. The Magic Keyboard's only irreplaceable advantage is Touch ID.

Apple Won't Make the Version People Actually Want

A compact (no numpad) black keyboard with Touch ID doesn't exist. Apple only offers black keys on the full-size numpad model, leaving users who want a smaller footprint stuck choosing between aesthetics and size. This gap has spawned a small DIY community harvesting Touch ID sensors from keyboards and 3D-printing standalone enclosures.

I use it all the time. Expensive but well worth it if you can afford it, imo.

Yes, definitely. It's the only reason I didn't end up with a more conventional keyboard.

I wish they sold Touch ID as a single button device that I could magnetically stick on the side of my desk or on the side of my keyboard of choice.

Yes, especially everything has moved to passkeys.

It's extremely wide and your mouse arm will be stretched way out.

I use this keyboard daily. I wish I bought the model without the numerical keyboard.

I bought one about 2 years ago, with Touch ID. The S and C key have the black paint chipping off. Apple has this problem with a lot of their black keyboards.

Love TouchID, especially with passkeys becoming more prevalent.

So I talked to Apple support and no there is no recall program for these Apple keys. They said I have to go back to the original store (it's already just past 2 years), so I'm basically shit out of luck for a 200 euro keyboard. Lesson learned.

Love it. That keyboard is awesome, I love how it feels and needed that full sized numerical pad.

Apple Watch, since I love my mechanical keyboard.

I have two magic keyboards and all I really want is a tiny touchID dongle that I can stick to real keyboard that doesn't feel like I'm pressing on a dinner plate.

I went with the compact one. Easier to use in my lap and easy to travel with. Check Best Buy! I was able to snag a returned Apple Magic with Touch ID, in 'excellent' condition, for $98! Saved $50.

Touch is great, but the letters on 3 of the keycaps on mine wore off after 2 years. I would have expected better quality for the insanely high price.

They seriously need to release a black version without the numpad.

Black keys show finger oils very easily and looks grubby. Just go to the Apple Store and see the demo keys. And the black keyboard creates halo grey dots in between the keys which can get really annoying. And the large keyboard means your typing won't always be centre relative to your screen, as you accommodate a mouse on the right hand side.

I bought a used Magic Keyboard and tore the Touch ID off. I then 3D printed an enclosure for it and now I have a separate Touch ID I can pair with any keyboard.

It's just a keyboard, some people like it because it feels the same as the MacBook's built in keyboard and they're used to that.

Honestly I think Apple peripherals are mostly subpar, especially considering their price. I mean their mouse is just hot garbage, and the Magic Keyboard is ok, but nothing special when compared to a decent mechanical keyboard.

I know you wrote 'other than Touch ID', but honestly, Touch ID is the killer feature.

My experience is that I use the TouchID key on my Mac keyboard all the time. Note that TouchID can be used for passkey sign-ins, which apps will encourage you to use, replacing passwords in many cases.

Yes Touch ID is so worth it. I have it on my setup and I will never get a different keyboard because of it.

I have it ONLY for the Touch ID, it sits off to the side and I use an actual usable keyboard for typing and touch the sensor to auth when necessary.

I have one at work and use Touch ID frequently. Really handy to not reach across my desk constantly, and makes it easy to lock my screen when I walk away.

I actually went through this exact decision. I picked up the Magic Keyboard for Touch ID, then ended up selling it. The feel just wasn't there for me — it's surprisingly flimsy compared to what you'd expect for the price, and if you already don't like the form factor, that's probably not going to get better.

I am an excellent typist, and this keyboard is a real drag. After a few months of use, the keys are starting to stick down. I have the white keys version, and the tiny, pale, pale characters are really hard to read. There's gotta be better choices out there.

I have black Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad (Lightning) and silver Magic Keyboard with Touch ID (USB-C). Black key caps show less wear and tear and matches MacBook's aesthetics. But with Magic Trackpad to the right, it is just too darn wide.

For me - yes. It makes things a lot quicker when passwords would normally be needed.

I actually just picked up an Apple Magic Keyboard with the numeric keypad in black as well. The Touch ID was what sold me on upgrading from my Apple Wireless Keyboard which still works fine but owning an M2 Mac Mini now, I was completely sold on it.

Having a keyboard with Touch ID is convenient especially for 2FA. However, I prefer using a mechanical keyboard instead.

I am one of the weirdos who enjoy the low-travel membrane keyboards that Apple makes these days. Combined with Touch ID and the standard Mac layout, it is unbeatable for me. I also like how I can easily travel with a full-sized keyboard in my backpack without adding much weight and bulk.

I have that keyboard and I would rather use the smaller one with TouchID but TouchID is a definite must for me. It makes it so much easier to login, purchase, and all that with a touch. I use it all the time, I use it to log in my Mac after sleep and to enter credentials for several websites.

Absolutely. I never have to type in passwords for anything anymore. It's also the best fingerprint / touch ID technology that I have experienced.

I have used this keyboard for several years. I use the Touch ID multiple times a day. When it breaks, I'm immediately buying a new one.

I picked one up at a slight discount and LOVE it! The Touch ID is used constantly, a good buy, and my favourite keyboard, despite Logitech having a better feel and backlighting. I just wish they would make one with a backlit keyboard.

Get the black Logitech MX Keys. It's so much more comfortable to type on anecdotally. And less than half the price. Works great with Mac.

I love the feel of the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID. It's my favorite keyboard other than the laptop keyboards (which it closely matches), and I haven't found an external keyboard yet that I can type on as fast and fatigue-free.

I've had the Apple KB and it was very good but I switched over to the Logitech MX S (smaller one with no num pad) and I'll never go back to an Apple keyboard. For me it was a massive difference in typing and paying up for a Touch ID option wasn't worth the added cost tbh.

Yes, this! Just bought the magic keyboard with 10 key and black keys, mostly to get TouchID (but like black too). Haven't even seen any 3rd party with Touch ID.
