Summary

The ASUS ROG Strix Scope II 96 Wireless is a well-regarded 96% wireless mechanical keyboard that earns consistent praise for its hardware quality while drawing equally consistent criticism for its Armoury Crate software. Users across multiple threads agree the typing experience is excellent — NX Snow switches come factory pre-lubed, the build feels premium, and wireless connectivity via the 2.4GHz dongle is rock-solid with strong battery life. The 96% layout is seen as a sweet spot for users who want numpad functionality without the full footprint of a 100% board. However, the Armoury Crate software has been a recurring complaint, with issues ranging from RGB bugs to dongle connectivity problems — though more recent reports suggest ASUS has improved things with updates. This keyboard is best suited for enthusiasts who either don't mind dealing with software headaches or can use alternatives like OpenRGB or SignalRGB.

Pros

  • NX Snow and NX Storm switches come factory pre-lubed with consistent keypress feel — users switching from Corsair, Logitech, and Razer regularly call this the smoothest board they've used
  • Hot-swappable PCB supports any Cherry MX-style 3-pin or 5-pin switch, making switch upgrades easy without soldering
  • 96% layout retains a full numpad while being noticeably more compact than a 100% keyboard — popular with users who rely on numpad for Excel or numbers-heavy work
  • 2.4GHz wireless delivers 1000Hz polling rate with zero perceptible latency difference from wired mode — Bluetooth is available but slightly slower per user reports
  • Battery life described as lasting multiple months between charges under typical use
  • Build quality feels premium with a metal top frame, and the included wrist rest is consistently praised as plush and comfortable

Cons

  • Armoury Crate software has a long history of bugs — RGB not loading on boot, lighting disappearing after updates, conflicts with Windows Dynamic Lighting, and dongle firmware issues have all been reported across threads
  • Per-key RGB via Aura Creator was not available at launch and took considerable time to roll out; even now requires both AC and Aura Creator installed, and only works reliably in wireless mode for some users
  • At $180 MSRP (discounted to ~$150 on sale), competitors like Keychron V5 and various hall-effect tri-mode boards offer comparable or better specs at lower price points — the 'gamer tax' is a recurring complaint
  • No VIA or VIAL support, which is a deal-killer for the mechanical keyboard enthusiast crowd who prefer open-source firmware over proprietary drivers
  • Secondary legends on number row keys do not shine through on some variants, a sourcing inconsistency users find frustrating
  • Isolated reports of specific keys (y, v) failing after months of use — though whether this is a switch issue fixable by hot-swap or a deeper defect is debated

Armoury Crate: Still a Mess or Finally Fixed?

The most debated topic across every ROG Scope II 96 thread isn't the keyboard — it's the software. Early buyers faced dongle connectivity failures, RGB disappearing after boot, and Aura Creator not detecting the board at all. More recent users report that ASUS has pushed updates that fixed the worst of it, but the experience remains inconsistent enough that several users recommend setting up an onboard profile and never opening AC again.

Great Hardware Trapped in a Gamer Brand Tax

Reddit's mechanical keyboard community is divided on value. Enthusiasts point out that $150–$180 gets you hall-effect tri-mode alternatives or fully open-source boards with VIA support. Casual users and gamers who just want a reliable wireless board with numpad tend to disagree — many say it's the best keyboard they've ever owned and don't miss what they've never had.

The 96% Form Factor Is the Real Selling Point

Users coming from full-size boards consistently note how little they miss after switching — the numpad is there, the layout is compact, and the only adjustment is the repositioned nav cluster. Multiple users who were skeptical of the 96% format before buying say they'd never go back to 100%. For anyone who uses a numpad but wants to reclaim desk space, this is the layout Reddit recommends most.

That's wickedly overpriced for a keyboard that isn't even hall effect. There are hall effect tri mode alternatives at the same cost, and non-hall effect tri mode options that are cheaper.

VIA and VIAL are so far ahead of any proprietary drivers there's no comparison.

Bought this keyboard when it first came out. Its nice and compact for a full sized keyboard without weird compromise on key placement. Volume scroll wheel is sweet. Caps are factory lubed. Battery lasts multiple months between charges.

$170 and it doesn't support VIA/L? That's a deal killer right there.

I have this and I absolutely love it. Per key RGB is a thing, but you need both Armory Crate and Aura Creator to do it. I've played with mine and have a real cool pattern setup with some animations.

I have this keyboard and I love this keyboard. There's so few cases where Hall effect actually matters to me, so it was irrelevant to purchasing a keyboard.

In terms of hardware, the NX Snow switches are spot on (great lubing from factory), very good stabilizer for the space bar, key presses are consistent, keyboard build quality is very good, wireless connectivity is great, battery life is good. 96% layout would need some getting used to if you never used this format in the past, but it's the best layout in my opinion.

I have one and I love it. It's hot swappable and quite honestly I've had zero issues with Armory Crate. I'm a linear person so got the NX Snow version for switches and couldn't be happier. For me it's worth the price for what is included and functionality. Only thing I wish it had is being able to multi layer key macro but other than that it's a fine board.

It works perfectly and is the best keyboard you can buy right now. They finally fixed Armory Crate. It works flawlessly.

Asus Armory Crate works perfectly now. It not only syncs RGB on all ASUS products but also ensures all firmware is up to date. Armory Crate is free and made for Asus. Signal RGB is paid and has ads.

The ROG Strix Scope II 96 Wireless is designed with a hot-swap PCB that supports Cherry MX-style switches. Although it ships with pre-lubed ROG NX switches (available in both linear Snow and tactile Storm options), you can swap them out for any compatible Cherry MX or Cherry MX-style switches, whether they are 3-pin or 5-pin.

I had it for 2 years. Absolutely excellent keyboard. Looks great and the typing experience is very nice. Think they were NX Snow switches, prelubed and had dampening foam. Only downside was having to use Armory Crate just for the RGB but it has a solid wireless signal and decent battery life.

I got the Scope II and I like it. Personally I use the numpad, so this form factor works for me, since it takes slightly less space than a full 100% keyboard. I also tried the Glorious GMMK and the Keychron V5, both linear. The GMMK wasn't great. Both the ASUS Scope II and the Keychron V5 are leagues ahead based on the typing experience for me personally. The Scope II is really smooth, and I preferred it slightly over the V5.

2025 now and still no per-key RGB? Tried using AC and it's not letting me access the keyboard. I have not tried in wired mode, because I'm stubborn and I paid extra for wireless... keeping it plugged in shouldn't be a requirement.

I got this keyboard yesterday and I hate Armoury Crate, so refused to install it, however I did install AC Gear, which allowed me to change colours and to update the firmware on both the dongle and the keyboard.

I have one. It's extremely overpriced for what it is. There are better boards for cheaper. But if you really like it and don't mind paying the gamer tax all ROG parts come with, then go for it. The caps it comes with are quite good, being double-shot, shine-through PBT. Any Cherry MX stem caps will work. The switches are pretty good feeling, but quite loud. Thankfully they are hot swappable.

It's a good keyboard but armoury crate is the biggest pile of shit in the world. I set it up and changed the rgb but now I want to change it again and it doesn't register the keyboard to allow you to change the rgb.

It's good and does the job. It's fully customizable and hot swappable. I have the NX Snows which I like as I'm a linear person. It's a little more compact being 96% which might take some getting used to.

I have the wired version. It's the best keyboard I have ever used. Also no issues whatsoever with Armoury Crate; I do have a ROG Strix motherboard so idk if that helps or not.

I got it a couple days ago and love using it for typing and gaming. However people are correct about the software, it's a mess!! The latency is exactly the same in Wired and Wireless mode 1000hz polling rate. Only bluetooth is a tiny bit slower according to the reviews. My overall experience with this keyboard is excellent! Best one I ever had.

I know a lot of users complained about the software being bad but it isn't really that bad at all, users just need to know what to do and get used to it. PERSONALLY I will take ASUS keyboard over RAZER anytime! The build quality and premium level is really no joke unlike RAZER! I'm officially done with RAZER.

I am coming from a razer lycosa that lasted me 10+ years, the scope 96 was my go to after all the research. It is getting some getting used to, but overall is a great kb and I am happy with it. The whole build quality feels and looks premium, the latency and speed in either modes wired omni etc has no difference to each other, they all work great for me, plus it is super quiet when typing.

I got this keyboard to replace a ROG Falchion one which started to have issues with the y key not working, and after almost a year guess what started happening on Scope 96 II Wireless... yes, the y key is not working. I tested a lot of troubleshooting options, including connecting both wired/wireless to another PC which had never used a keyboard before and it looks like a hardware or defective design issue. I do not recommend this keyboard.

All you're missing is the segment of the board where you can page up page down etc at the touch of a button which is useful for Excel users but the 96% feels good and compact while maintaining functionality. Its a real premium board with a lovely plush wrist rest. In fact I'd say the whole package is premium even how it's packaged and presented from new, very nice.

I have always despised gamer boards and still do. I have had many keyboards that are all aluminum with all different kinds of mods done to them. This board with the snow switches is really great. Metal top frame and out the box it sounds good. Still gamer board sound but it thocks pretty good. Stabs def need lubing. But I'm actually using it as my main now.

The hardware is fine but the software is trash (just like razer and icue), and 99% of the issues are caused by AC making a mess out of it. A shame though.

I just purchased it for $149. After trying around 15+ keyboards it's my favorite so far. The armory crate software allows me to rebind 100% of the keys on the keyboard. So a traditional TKL is how I have my number pad setup. I like it.

I bought this keyboard yesterday coming from k70mk2 with mx browns. The linear switches are OUT of this world. They are so smooth like typing on a cloud! And if I ever need I can change them since this is a hot swap board.

Look at the legend keys 1 to 0 on this keyboard that they post to you - THEY DONT LIGHT UP! They show you pictures where they are all lit but then post you a keyboard where the secondary legends on the numbers are just etched on. Other than that it's a great keyboard, but I'm still hunting for the one where the legends are all lit.

I opened AC after a while yesterday and there was a bunch of updates for the keyboard and AC itself. After the update I can finally use aura creator where I can mix up two effects and set up per key rgb. Works in wireless too. The process of setting up is not that smooth, but after you set everything up everything works nice.

Just download SignalRGB. It's a single pane of glass for all RGB technologies.

It's a REALLY nice keyboard to type and game on, took a year for me to get used to on gaming with the layout. I swapped the switches and they are even better now.

I have one and use it for long gaming sessions the only down side I've seen so far is the wrist rest that comes with it starts stretching over time with prolonged use.

OpenRGB only supports it in wired mode and I haven't found anything in openrgb that makes per-key lighting a thing with this keyboard. As soon as I saw I had to only use it wired for it to work, I didn't really spend much time looking more into it.

I know it's a great keyboard, and technically the keys are all individually lit, but Armoury crate won't let you individually assign colors.

I have zero issues with Armory Crate. Guess I'm just lucky. I really hate the keycap design. The nice thing is I can change those. NX Snow switches do feel amazing.
