Summary

The Corsair K65 Plus Wireless is a 75% hot-swappable mechanical keyboard that earns genuine praise for its premium build quality, pre-lubricated switches, dual sound-dampening layers, and versatile connectivity — but Reddit sentiment is dominated by frustration over significant wireless limitations that feel like they were bolted on as an afterthought. Per-key RGB customization, mural lighting effects, and hardware memory profiles are all stripped out in wireless mode, which stings for a board at this price point. Mac users got a dedicated variant but balked at the USB-A dongle inclusion. The K65 Plus sits in an awkward spot: excellent as a wired board, genuinely compromised as a wireless one, and increasingly challenged by competitors with fewer trade-offs.

Pros

  • Pre-lubricated MLX switches with two layers of sound dampening make it one of the quietest out-of-the-box boards in the gaming keyboard market
  • Hot-swappable switches let users experiment with third-party options without soldering — rare at this form factor among major brands
  • Solid, premium build quality with a hefty, substantial feel that users consistently describe as high-end compared to other Corsair keyboards
  • Supports 2.4GHz and Bluetooth connectivity plus wired USB, with cross-platform compatibility including Windows, macOS, Xbox, PlayStation, iOS, and Android
  • 75% compact layout frees up significant desk space while retaining dedicated function row and arrow cluster
  • iCUE software unlocks macros, custom keybinds, and full per-key RGB when used in wired mode

Cons

  • Per-key RGB, mural lighting effects, and custom lighting profiles are completely disabled in wireless mode — only 4 preset static colors available without iCUE
  • No hardware device memory mode (DMM), meaning lighting settings revert to onboard defaults the moment iCUE is closed or quit
  • Battery life with lighting enabled draws complaints, with some users reporting needing to charge every other day
  • USB-A dongle frustrates Mac users given modern Macs have moved entirely to USB-C — SteelSeries and others already offer USB-C wireless dongles
  • No shine-through keycaps available from Corsair for this layout, limiting aftermarket customization; third-party options are limited due to the non-standard sizing
  • At ~$160, alternatives like the Lemokey P1 Pro offer QMK/VIA remapping and better build quality at a lower price, while the cheaper K70 Core TKL Wireless actually has fewer wireless restrictions

The Wireless Keyboard That Works Best Wired

Reddit users repeatedly discover that the K65 Plus's most-advertised feature comes with the biggest asterisk: go wireless and you lose per-key RGB, mural effects, and any custom lighting profile the moment iCUE isn't running.

Corsair's Cheaper K70 Core TKL Has Fewer Wireless Restrictions

In a twist that frustrates K65 Plus owners, the lower-priced K70 Core TKL Wireless supports per-key RGB and flash tab effects in wireless mode — making the K65 Plus feel like it got the worse deal despite costing more.

Mac Users Were Promised a Lot, Got a USB-A Dongle

Corsair launched a Mac-specific K65 Plus variant alongside Apple's Mac mini promotion, but the 2.4GHz dongle is USB-A — a decision that drew immediate backlash from an audience whose machines haven't had USB-A ports in years.

USB-A!?!? Are you kidding me. What the hell were they thinking. Whoever approved that should be fired on the spot.

So they made mac specific products that still have usb-a in 2024? SteelSeries has had usb-c wireless dongles for years, Corsair is so behind the times.

As someone that just picked up a k100 Corsair keyboard it is by far the best keyboard I've ever used and is also the most compatible keyboard with any Mac I've used. It's enabled couch gaming with my MacBook on my oled tv and then I can take the setup back to my desktop if I want. It's super nice to have a low profile mechanical keyboard that's this easy to transition between different work flows and gaming.

And they also suggest buying them with the new Mini which is usb-c... makes no sense.

I was extremely disappointed when I found out that ICUE functionality was taken away when in wireless mode. Defeats the whole purpose of having a wireless device if I can't use my custom colors and keys unless plugged in all the time. Will have to return it now. I have been waiting years for Corsair to just release a rgb wireless keyboard 75% with replaceable switches. They finally did it only to drop the ball so hard.

They really did not ask any Mac users for feedback. If they just move the logos to the bottom and used usb-c, they would easily have better luck.

Weird. The original K65 Plus Wireless has a toggle switch for windows and Mac modes (I use mine on both platforms daily). This new version seems unnecessary. Color scheme looks cool though.

I have a k65 and I have had zero issues with it. Never had a problem with icue as well.

I'm guessing the 2.4 dongle is USB-A.

could have been the perfect keyboard.. idk why you would not include hardware profiles, 100$ keyboards and below have this feature now.

I'm new to Corsair, Gaming PCs & all these flashy light up things after over a decade as a Mac user. I wish I'd seen this before I purchased. There's also a lot I like about this keyboard. Just feel completely cheated by the marketing.

Have you found the RGBs to be really inaccurate? The white is really blue, the yellow shows up as green. I had a k70 mk2 before this and it was far more accurate.

Pricey. Didn't realize they were that special.

It is a good but flawed keyboard. I actually hope it does well so that corsair can be motivated to continue down this path. I'm glad I bought mine because it actually motivated me to buy a KeyCron Q1 Max. But honestly, if those issues that you talked about weren't there I would have kept it instead.

Unlike the K65 Plus, the K70 Core TKL Wireless allows RGB settings for each key in wireless mode. In other words, the performance of the keyboard itself is better on the K70 Core TKL, and Flash Tab is also possible. The only downside to Core TKL is the non-hot swap part, but if you don't need to replace the switch separately, the K70 Core TKL would be a better option.

After quitting the iCUE software my keyboard now can reuse the fn + 1-0 features. So install iCUE, update your keyboard while it's charging, close the iCUE software in the background, and you're good to go.

Does Corsair not sell the keycaps separately? I hate not having shine through.

Just bought one of these. Not only was I disappointed by this, but within 72 hours it started having wireless connectivity issues. My last Corsair gave me a solid 7 years, but this one I think I'm just going to return.

Excellent post. I was about to pull the trigger on getting this over the ASUS for Icue software reasons alone. So glad I carried on doing more research rather than pull the trigger. I would have been major disappointed and would have had to send the device back. This post just saved me TONNES of wasted time. And literally NO-ONE mentioned this in ANY of the long videos and many reviews I've watched and read. Not one!

Well damn, you saved me from ordering it. I was 99% ready to jump on it. Which sucks because now I have to go back to the drawing board and find something else.

The wireless limitation and false marketing is pretty damn shitty of them. It really feels amazing to type on, but other than that. I might go back to Logitech or try the Asus Strix 96 II.

Unless the ability to sync the board's RGB with existing Corsair components is needed, I might look at something like a Lemokey P1 Pro instead. Better build quality, better key remapping (QMK/VIA), but cheaper. K65 plus wireless isn't a bad keyboard per se, you are just paying a premium for the branding and the rgb sync.

I had a k65 plus but with red linear switches, it's a fantastic keyboard with a nice thocky sound out of the box. Switches aside it's really well built and feels nice and solid. You'll definitely like it.

I have both and exclusively use the K70. I found the K65 to be less responsive than I like and the layout of the keys to be a bit cramped. I would have preferred a fully wireless experience but in this case, the K70 is the better option. I will say that the key noise is much louder on the 70 vs 65 but that isn't an issue for me.

I ended up buying the k70 core wireless too. I much prefer the layout but I gotta say, the k65 sounds better. Still, I don't miss it, k70 it's just better.

I really love the K65 Plus, the only issue I have with it is the battery is not that good and I feel like I have to be charging it every other day. Other than that, fantastic keyboard.

I see, thanks for the clarification. So it's basically a wireless keyboard with many customization unavailable if actually used wirelessly. I might switch to the G915 TKL from Logitech.

Is there a way to edit the onboard lighting profiles? Most of them seem to be rainbow colors. I want to set a custom red/blue color shift or color pulse. I have a K70 60% and it lets me create custom lighting profiles for when not using iCue. I do not understand why this $160 keyboard does not let you set custom lighting profiles like the other models.

They sell k65 with shine thru, but with fusion switches not the mlx red. They don't sell the switches separately though so you need to mod yourself with 3rd party switches. It's a stinger. Corsair why are you so firm?

The one thing that I will gripe about is my KVM does not like the K65+, in that hotkey switching no longer works even if I add a powered USB hub. I found the single-key flash lighting plan to be the most practical and spouse-friendly option though.

Tactiles give you a tactile feedback when you push the key. If you are coming from a membrane keyboard you may find the problem with linear switches of mistyping and making lots of typos when writing, so tactile may be a safer choice.

What about ergonomics? Would the TKL be too big for you? For example mouse movements and so on. In my case the ergonomics was the most important thing when choosing a keyboard.
