Summary

The Keychron K8 Max is a TKL wireless mechanical keyboard aimed at users who want solid Bluetooth connectivity and QMK/VIA programmability without paying Q-series prices. Reddit sentiment is generally positive for what it is — a reliable, hotswappable wireless board with good build quality — but experienced users frequently point out that its tray-mount design makes it feel hollow and stiffer compared to gasket-mounted competitors in the same price range. It sits firmly in Keychron's mainstream K line, which means it's a great entry point for newcomers to mechanical keyboards but gets scrutinized more harshly by enthusiasts who can get the V3 Max or even the Q-series for similar money. The K8 Max's appeal is straightforward: wireless freedom, hotswap support, and the Keychron ecosystem without breaking the bank.

Pros

  • QMK/VIA support on the Max variant opens up deep key remapping and macro customization that older K-series boards lacked entirely
  • Hotswap PCB lets users swap to any 3-pin or 5-pin switch without soldering, making it genuinely modder-friendly at its price tier
  • Wireless performance via Bluetooth is functional for multi-device setups, and the Max variant's battery life holds up well in daily use
  • TKL layout strikes the right balance for users who want arrow keys and function row without committing to a full-size footprint
  • Keychron's Super switches included out of the box are described as decent — noticeably better than the stock switches on older K-series boards
  • Keycap compatibility is wide open thanks to standard ANSI layout and OEM profile caps, making aftermarket upgrades easy and affordable

Cons

  • Tray-mount construction makes it feel and sound noticeably hollow compared to the gasket-mounted V3 Max, which often costs the same or less
  • South-facing LEDs make RGB essentially useless unless you mod your switches — a persistent complaint across all K-series boards
  • The K8 Max sits in an awkward spot in Keychron's lineup: the V3 Max offers gasket mount, better sound, and similar wireless features for comparable pricing
  • Keyboard height is steep with no built-in tilt adjustment, which some users find uncomfortable for extended typing sessions without a wrist rest
  • Space bar chattering has been reported on K8 variants when typing fast, requiring a switch swap to resolve — a hardware-level annoyance at this price
  • Bluetooth reliability has historically been a sore point for K-series boards, with some users reporting inconsistent connections across devices

Is the K8 Max Worth It Over the V3 Max?

Reddit users consistently point buyers toward the V3 Max when budgets overlap — gasket mount, better acoustics, and similar wireless features make the K8 Max's tray-mount design harder to justify unless you specifically want the TKL layout in the K-series aesthetic.

QMK on a K-Series Board Changes the Value Equation

The Max update wasn't just about wireless — adding QMK/VIA support to the K8 line brought a level of programmability that was previously locked behind Q and V-series boards, making this a genuinely better deal for power users than its predecessors.

The RGB Is a Known Disappointment

South-facing LEDs are a consistent gripe across Keychron's K line, and the K8 Max is no exception. Users who care about RGB lighting are routinely advised to either mod their switches or look elsewhere — the backlight is nearly invisible through standard keycaps.

K series keyboards have BT, are available with white or RGB backlight, and you can get them with a wraparound aluminum frame. These are not custom keyboards per se. They are mostly hot-swap but you can usually not get barebones, and Keychron doesn't offer different plates or whatever.

Keyboards are categorized into multiple sizes. The most common ones are the full size (giant, but has everything), TKL (a full size without a number pad), 75% (about the size of Apple's smaller Magic Keyboard plus one more column of keys on the right side), and 60% (no navigation keys or function row).

Keep the K2 and swap out the switches too for some silent ones.

Q is the premier line. Q-line and the K-series Pros are programmable. K-Series Pro is a premium line also but wireless and has less metal on the body than the Q-series.

I'd keep the K2, if you really have to keep only one. It's a thick board, but even then I don't find I need a wrist rest for it.

I have both myself and I like to switch them up from time to time. If you're into mechanical boards, why are you forced to sell one? It's an excellent hobby.

K8 and K10 are identical except for layout.

In general, the Keychron are budget keyboards that are Mac compatible. Hotswap means you can change out the switches and Keychron keyboards come in both hotswap and non-hotswap versions.

For K and K Pro, standard K is just wireless KB, whereas K Pro has Via/QMK support as an additional feature. For Q and Q Pro, standard Q are wired only but has all the customisable features with metal case, whereas Q Pro has wireless as an additional feature.

The K line-up is all tray-mounted, which means they feel and sound a little stiffer and hollower. I also wouldn't buy a non-max version of anything from Keychron tbh. The V1 Max is gasket-mounted and comes with better looking keycaps than the K8 Max. The Gateron Jupiter switches are also a decent bit nicer than the Keychron Super switches in terms of feel, although the Super switches are pretty decent imo.

Typically with Keychron, if the only difference is the number, you can expect they'll be constructed basically exactly the same save for the obvious layout change. It is the series name (K/V/Q etc) and the basic vs pro vs max that are the big differences.

I have both the K8 and K10, with brown switches. The keys and switches are the same. Beautifully made and nicely pre-lubed. However, when typing fast, the space bar of the K8 occasionally chatters... making several spaces when you just type one space. It occurs less after changing the switch to Keychron Pro Silent.

V6 is pretty good, it still works perfectly fine, I was able to increase the macro memory by modifying the firmware and has not a single catch except that the ESC letter paint wore off. So it's a good choice, you won't regret the purchase at all.

I chose the K2 over the K3 and sold the K3. The K2 has many options for keycaps, better RGB (brighter) and definitely good looking in my eyes anyway.

The V series just seems like the cheaper version of Q series — V series uses plastic cases vs Q series uses metal ones.

I use the K3 for meetings — more silent — and my Gateron brown K2 for every other time.

The Lemokey P1 Pro is 75% board that is usually similarly priced to the K8 Max, but much better, IMHO. Full aluminium build, gasket mount, etc. It's comparable to the higher end Keychron Q1 Max, but Keychron cut a few corners to make it more budget friendly.

I got a Q3 (wired only) from keychron.com for $70 barebone ($90 with switches and caps). It is from the time (2022) when Keychron was still good.

K and C are older lines and generally less featured and premium than the V and Q lines. In this case the V6 Max is actually slightly cheaper than the K10 Max, includes a knob, and is gasket mount which is a more premium design than the K10 Max's tray mount.

Once they added wireless to the V series I was sure the K series was going to be low profile only… I honestly don't understand why the full size K Max board exists (I guess the tray mount design?).

Both the K8 Max and V3 Max have south-facing LEDs, making the RGB light practically useless, unless almost all switches are modified.

I have two K8s. I hate them. They are too high. I've used them less than 10 times each. One has blues and the other reds. The reason why I hate them is because they're much too steep.

There's a $100 dollar difference between K2 Pro and Q1 Pro. Not everyone will be able to afford a $200+ keyboard so I think K Pro series still makes sense, but if you can afford it, Q Pro seems awesome.

K2 is much better and more versatile but it is also really tall. Mech keyboards are tall but K2 is extraordinarily tall — it's a thick boi. Low profile keyboards are generally much more ergonomic so if ergonomics is your thing keep that in mind.

Low profile doesn't benefit me in any way. K2 battery is bigger, K2 PBT keycaps are available, K2 has normal length keystroke which I am used to, and K2 has OEM profile keys which I prefer.

I'm really happy with my K3. Coming from using exclusively laptop keyboards for 10+ years, a full-height mechanical keyboard is very uncomfortable to type on for me, whereas the K3 is a pleasant experience.

The K10 PRO allows you to repurpose the numeric keypad as a macro pad — for example, for dedicated keys without the need for modifier keys for very common operations like moving to the next/previous tab in a web browser.

The K Pro series with metal options are not all metal, but a plastic body with a detachable aluminum frame.

The main difference between Q Pro and K Pro would be the metal case, gasket mount, and overall look. Metal frame has less hollow sound than plastic frames, and also the weight makes it feel better when typing. The gasket mount allows the frame to move when typing, which also may give you some difference in typing feel.

I've bought 3 K2v2's so far. I really haven't found any keyboard that matches my needs so well — tasteful RGB, heavy aluminum frame that can be painted, keys that I actually missed on my 60% like home/end.

I was very underwhelmed with the Montech. I don't understand why it got such good reviews. If you come from a 15/20 bucks keyboard, the Montech might feel great. Keychron definitely isn't top of the line, but it's a step above budget gaming keyboards.

When I measured the K2 Pro against the V1 Max I found the spacebar height on the V1 Max to be taller. This was without using the elevating legs on either. I found this typing angle on the K2 Pro to be just about perfect for me, but on the V1 Max no legs was too low and the first leg was too high.

As the only keyboard, the V3 Max happened to have its source code for the early 2025 Keychron keyboard main firmware updates released.

Red and brown switch is available on both the K8 Max and V3 Max. I think I prefer the browns because of the feedback. My old keyboard is a Razer Blackwidow 2014.

I asked Keychron directly through their website and the response was literally 'Q, V, C, S series are wired.' Not sure even Keychron know what the distinction is.

I find that I reach for the K3 more often because I've been working from home and I need a simple keyboard. But for 'fun' I will pick up the K2 to type on.
