Summary

The Logitech Alto Keys K98M is a 96% layout hotswap mechanical keyboard that started as a China-exclusive before gradually reaching the US and other markets. Reddit sentiment is largely positive among those who own one — users praise its typing feel, build quality, and sleek translucent aesthetic. It fits well in the Logitech ecosystem thanks to Bolt 2.4GHz dongle compatibility, making it a great companion for MX mice. That said, the keyboard launched with limited global availability, and many users had to import it from China or AliExpress to get one. It appeals most to productivity-focused users who want a compact full-function layout without sacrificing the numpad, and who already trust the Logitech brand.

Pros

  • Hotswap support lets users swap switches without soldering — a rare feature in Logitech's lineup, confirmed by owners who tested it with no issues
  • Works with Logitech's Bolt 2.4GHz dongle, meaning it can share a single receiver with MX mice for a cleaner desk setup
  • Typing feel gets consistent praise — one owner switching from a NuPhy Halo 96 said the stock experience still impressed them, and another described the key travel as 'right on'
  • 96% / 1800 layout keeps the numpad while staying compact — a layout that's genuinely hard to find in this price range with this feature set
  • Build quality feels cohesive and premium compared to earlier Logitech mechanical keyboards; one user called it 'a bit more innovative' than the MX Mechanical
  • Straightforward wireless connectivity — Bluetooth paired easily for most users with no reported lag issues

Cons

  • Battery life has been a pain point — one user reported daily charging with backlight on, and another saw 20% drain in a single day; far from the 12-month advertised figure
  • Limited global availability at launch forced many users to import from China or AliExpress at around $130, with no clear timeline for wider regional rollout
  • No Mac-specific keycaps — the hybrid PC/Mac modifier legends are a known frustration for Mac-primary users, and Logitech has no replacement keycaps planned
  • Competitors like the Keychron K4 Pro offer similar layout and features at a lower price point, making the value case harder to justify purely on specs
  • AI Smart Key feature tied to Baidu is largely irrelevant outside China, and Options+ AI features are disabled for US users in some regions
  • Software dependency is a recurring Logitech complaint — no onboard memory means settings can be wiped after software updates, and VIA compatibility is absent

Battery Life or Bad Unit?

Some owners are getting daily charges while Logitech advertises up to 12 months. The culprit seems to be either backlight-on usage or third-party software misreporting charge levels — one user resolved theirs with a longer overnight charge.

A Logitech Mech That Actually Feels Finished

Owners who've tried previous Logitech mechanicals like the MX Mechanical say the K98M feels genuinely different — more cohesive design, better switches, and a build that doesn't feel like a compromise. It's the board many Logi fans were waiting for.

The Import Tax of Being a China Exclusive

Enthusiasts across Europe, Japan, and the US have been hunting for this board since it launched as a China-only release. Some paid import costs and AliExpress markups to get one — and most said it was worth it.

Is the only difference between this and the K98M the 'AI' feature aka 'Smart Keys'? Doesn't seem like much of an upgrade.

I've been trying to find a no/minimal frills 1800 layout. It's been so difficult lol.

My MX Keys and MX Master 3 has been functioning excellently for daily use for years!

Overall I feel the same way about Logitech — ditto on the positive experience.

Monsgeek M2 V5 VIA and YUNZII AL98 are much better for the price, if you're interested in aluminum frame. If you specifically want plastic, check out the IF99.

First impressions are great. Typing experience is really spectacular, the switches are great and the key travel and bottom out feel right on for the kind of typing I do daily in my job. I really haven't liked any other Logi mech keyboards up until now — this feels a bit more innovative and cohesive.

As an alternative to Touch ID I know this is dumb but works as fast as it is — I added a macro to enter my password on a different layer on my keyboard via VIA, I press the required combination and it unlocks it for me, it not only works on the lockscreen but also on other system prompts which require a password.

I've had all positive experiences with their products, but if you order directly from them, expect long delays without much of an explanation.

I absolutely love mine. It feels and sounds great and matches well with the MX 4 mouse. Swapping switches was a breeze (just tested it out but I like the defaults). No connectivity issues or lag via bluetooth.

I went from ERGO K860 keyboard to this about a month ago at work and I love it! Typing is smooth, white looks aesthetically pleasing, and the size is perfect for my minimal-like look at the office but still have the keypad. The only downside I would say is the battery life. I have my backlight at average and still have to charge it almost every day.

I like mine, it's nice and well made. Sure there's better options, but it's not a bad choice.

I paid $99 a little bit before Christmas. Really happy with it for the money.

Unless u like Logitech software, the answer is nope. With that much for a plastic key u could have better options like aula F99 or F104.

Nice! Not cheap either. MX Keys is about the same price. I should have gone with this model. Looks so cool.

Seriously Asia-released products are the best ones.

I am pretty sure the K98M has the same AI feature, since the AI feature is powered by Baidu. I just got this cos it was pink.

Unless it's VIA compatible, it will have software issues.

Doing innovation but still won't allow us users to opt-in for a longer backlight timeout on those. Beautiful keyboard though.

I'm in the market for a new wireless keyboard and Logitech is just a more reliable and trusted brand in my opinion. I already own a basic Logi wireless keyboard and have never had any issues, and the battery life is great.

I left it plugged in overnight a few days ago, instead of just until Solaar said the battery was at 100%, and now a few days later off the charger, it's still at 100%, so I'm going to chalk this up to misrepresentation of battery charge from the third party software.

It's a genuinely interesting product — 1800 / 96% layout but also hotswap AND interoperable with Bolt 2.4GHz dongles. I would most assuredly buy one if they would release it in JIS layout.

Working is fine but in India their after sales support is shitty. I couldn't get my MX master 3s repaired because it's not supported here.

I have been using MX 3s mouse for a year and a half and the switch under the left click started failing — I hear the click, but nothing happens on screen. Such a shame, they have very nice products just not reliable obviously.

Looking great. Can it switch its backlit color to pure white? It would really fit my desktop decor and I would order one ASAP.

Agree the products are awesome — I have multiple MX Keys keyboards and MX Master mice. But support in India is non-existent, and it's really irritating when you have only 6 months warranty on a $100 mouse.

This looks nice, but I do find myself questioning, if you are looking for a 96% layout mechanical keyboard, why get this over a Keychron K4 Pro for a little less money, or a K4 HE for a little more?

Bug fixes are slow, features will not get improved, feature requests get ignored. No way to store settings on the devices themselves, settings get wiped after an update, no offline backup of settings, Flow is slow, everything requires an account.
