Summary

The Logitech MX Mechanical is a low-profile wireless mechanical keyboard that draws a polarized but mostly moderate response from the Reddit community. Owners who stick with it tend to appreciate its excellent battery life, clean industrial design, and multi-device switching via Logi Bolt — but a significant portion of users feel it's overpriced given the competition. It sits in an awkward niche: it's not customizable enough for keyboard enthusiasts, yet it carries a premium price tag that invites constant comparisons to Keychron and NuPhy alternatives. The keyboard appeals most to users already in the Logitech ecosystem who prioritize wireless reliability and long battery life over typing feel or build quality.

Pros

  • Battery life is genuinely outstanding — users report nearly a month of use with backlight off, far ahead of competitors like NuPhy and early Keychron Bluetooth models
  • Logi Bolt receiver provides rock-solid 2.4GHz wireless with minimal latency, and seamless three-device switching is a standout for multi-computer workflows
  • Low-profile mechanical switches offer a middle ground between laptop chiclet and full mechanical keyboards, making the transition easier for users coming from laptop keyboards
  • Logitech Options+ software is consistently praised as one of the better peripheral management apps, with Flow cross-computer control being a unique productivity feature
  • The full-size version includes a numpad — rare in the low-profile wireless category — making it practical for data-heavy work
  • Clean, premium industrial aesthetic with floating keys and a backlit aluminum plate that stands out in home and streaming setups

Cons

  • ABS keycaps develop a shiny, oily look quickly with normal use and cannot be fully replaced — the non-standard spacebar and stabilizer placement block standard low-profile keycap sets
  • Backlight auto-timeout (around 20 seconds) is a widely complained-about issue with no user-configurable setting to keep it permanently on, a firmware/software limitation Logitech has not addressed
  • Switches are soldered, not hot-swappable — once you buy a switch variant, you're stuck with it, which is a significant limitation at a price point where competitors like Keychron offer hot-swap
  • Sporadic connectivity issues (random disconnects, key misfires, ghost keypresses) reported by a subset of users, with some experiencing these throughout the product's lifespan
  • No wired mode — the keyboard can only operate wirelessly, which is a hard limitation compared to Keychron and other competitors that support USB-C wired use
  • Priced at $130–$150+, it's consistently outclassed for the money by Keychron Q6/K5 Max and Lofree Flow alternatives that offer better build quality, hot-swap, and customization

The Backlight Problem Nobody Can Fix

Across multiple threads, the most consistent complaint is the backlight shutting off after 20 seconds with no way to disable the timeout in software. It's a recurring frustration for dark-room users and streamers — and Logitech has repeatedly declined to address it despite years of user feedback.

Is It Worth the Premium Over Keychron?

Reddit's recurring verdict: Keychron offers better build quality, hot-swap switches, wired mode, and more keycap options for the same or less money. The MX Mechanical wins on battery life and Logi ecosystem integration, but those advantages rarely justify the price gap for users who care about typing experience first.

Low-Profile Loyalists Who Won't Switch Back

Despite the criticism, a vocal group of users remains committed — particularly those who tried competitors and returned, citing Logitech's battery life witchcraft and Bolt wireless reliability as irreplaceable. For multi-device productivity users who hate charging keyboards, it still holds a niche no competitor has fully matched.

The design is just a dream. That clean, industrial look with the floating keys — 120% perfect for me, especially for my DJ streaming setup. The switches (brown tactiles) feel amazing. Many say they're a bit scratchy, but that's exactly what I like: you actually feel the mechanical feedback without it being too loud.

It's quite nice, I'm using it right now, but tbh there are better options that are cheaper.

I just switched from this to Keychron Q6 Max brown and it's night and day quality difference and build quality. I'm loving the Keychron.

The normal one is prettier. The mechanical one doesn't hurt my wrists.

I can highly recommend this keyboard (although I have the mini version of it without the numblock). I love it together with the MX Master 3S.

I've been using a mini since a year, and it's a much more satisfying experience than typing on the MX Keys. The sound isn't too annoying, and after a couple weeks of adjustment, I am able to type on it at maximum speed without having to look or making any errors. Great, portable, mechanical keyboard for its price. No complaints.

Love it. Long battery life and stable wireless connectivity. All my Logitech keyboards have outlasted my Keychron and Nuphy keyboards.

If you don't benefit from Logitech Options+ and the Logitech Flow capability of the MX Master 4 then no the MX Mechanical is not worth it anymore. Simply out of touch with the current state of the art at that price point.

MX Mech is undoubtedly one of the best options in the market right now that's mechanical & low-profile & wireless. I really hope this call for better keycaps get heard by Logitech because neither Keychron nor NuPhy can match Logitech's software capabilities.

Also using one here. I have no complaints, don't see any obvious upgrades they should implement on a refreshed version. The battery lasts almost a month with daily 9-5 coding.

No, you could find better keyboards for the same price. This keyboard is not completely bad it's just mediocre. And how they implemented backlight is just some totally insane stuff, mostly unfixable.

I returned mine. This sensor backlight issue killed the keyboard for me — it worked fine for a couple days, then it would stay on all the time, then it would turn off for a second then back on. In the dark it won't turn on at all, only if my hands got closer. Got a G515 and could not be happier.

I work with software development and financial modeling. Constantly using F-keys. No issue at all to find the correct key without spacing.

The only reason I wouldn't go for a competitor (Nuphy/Keychron/Lowfree in my case for mac) is that their battery lives are abysmal. Only the Logitech's seem to be ISO UK, and last longer than a week, but it is old technology and especially for the price.

I bought one for the office and one for WFH. I do office work and spend too much time on my computer. I really enjoy the low profile keyboards — they mean they are portable and don't need palm rests while still being ergonomic. I also was dying for nicer switches.

I have the mini version and it's okay for a low profile keyboard. The single wireless dongle is awesome and the Logitech software is one of the better big brand bits of software out there with some nice features, the cross computer sharing being a standout. I personally find the keyboard a little fatiguing though.

I own both the MX Keys and MX Mechanical. As someone who works on my laptop often, I definitely prefer the MX Keys since it's a lot quieter than the Mechanical. The MX Mechanical series is significantly louder than the MX Keys, so it's really up to you if you're fine with the loud noise.

I got the Keychron Q6 with the Banana switches, and find it to be a much better keyboard overall. I don't like how the MX Mechanical feels at all, and the benefits just aren't there for me.

I have mine as a backup, since release (full size Mx mech). It's been great, no issues except that I hate the keycaps. They get oily/shiny so quickly and look terrible. I have to wipe it after each day.

I have both and prefer the Mechanical over the Keys. Working in IT, I type a lot and personally prefer the more feedback (have the tactile switches). When I'm in the office, I use the Keys — it's more silent — but at home all in mechanical.

Got the mini version and been using for about 2 years. Great keyboard! Lacks the ability to customise the keycaps so if that's your thing, you might be disappointed.

I had an MX keyboard and it was fine. But recently switched to a keychron K10 and it's worlds better. If you really want a mechanical keyboard I would go with a company that specializes in them like keychron.

It is the keyboard that I can't give up. I've always used the Logitech MX Keys mini and loved the low profile keyboard. However, once the MX Mechanical came out I switched and I have not been able to give it up. I love this keyboard.

I changed the keys on my MX Mechanical Mini with PBT shine-through keycaps from Amazon — the problem is that you can't change their spacebar and it's hard to find Fn keycaps. I just stuck to the theme of my keyboard and they look great even without the spacebar and Fn replacement keys.

I am using one — hate it. It takes simply 3 months of daily use for all key caps to wear out and become shiny. The keys cannot be replaced because Logitech decided to make the space bar and the caps lock non-standard, so you cannot buy new key caps of better quality, and they don't sell any.

The keyboard experience is nice but the build quality is awful. The CTRL key just fell apart in my keyboard after less than two months of use — the plastic that fits onto the switch completely disintegrated. Logitech wouldn't send me a replacement key cap.

I really do hate the mx mechanical tactile more than my mx keys. Both are nowhere near as good as my cherry brown keyboard. But I really wanted wireless. The mx mechanical is shockingly bad for a mechanical keyboard though. I was really surprised how bad it was.

Do not ever buy one. It's fairly low quality for the price. If you remove a key to clean it, it often breaks and there are no replacement OEM keys.

I have the MX Mechanical Mini, and my wife has the full-size version. They're good workhorse boards, but could be better. The keycaps appear to be made of ABS, which in and of itself isn't a bad thing, but they will gain a shine over time with normal use. This wouldn't be an issue if you could retrofit it with standard low-profile keycaps, but due to non-standard stabilizer placement, that's not completely possible.

I have the MX Mechanical and I am not satisfied. It is the most expensive keyboard I've ever owned and it is full of flaws. Backlight doesn't turn on when you start typing, sometimes you have to wave your hand aggressively over the keyboard to get the backlight to turn on. The backlight won't turn off when my laptop goes into sleep mode.

Logitech, as every other company, has to lower carbon footprint but mistakes were made. MX products from 2022 introduced recycled plastic as part of their Sustainability program. The worst is MX Mechanical line-up with ~50% recycled plastic while MX Keys S and Mini has ~25%.

I hate that for you. I've had Logitech keyboards for a decade and not a single issue. I'm using a mx mini mechanical, full size mx mechanical, mx mini mechanical apple and a g915tkl. All of them top notch.

I have the MX mechanical mini and it's a great keyboard especially for the battery life and Bluetooth connection. Other than that, I think today there are better options like Nuphy Air 75 v2 and Lofree Flow that offer hot swappable switches compared to soldered switches on the Logitech.

I've had mine for around 2 years now and it's been strong and works well. I love the ease of switching between 3 different devices at the push of a button. And with the MX Master 3s paired with it on my desk, it's a great combo. Battery life is crazy long!

The MX Keys definitely looks and feels like a more premium product. It's a solid good-looking chunk of aluminum and high-grade polymer, whereas the MX Mechanical's housing is pretty ordinary. After handling both, you'd never guess that the mechanical costs almost 50% more.

I had one, and then I ran into a problem where pressing certain keys led to repetition (several in a string) after about a year of use. So I bought another, and within about 6 months the lettering is all smudged into large white filled circles.

Yeah nah this is what kills the keyboard for me. I don't need the light when I'm typing, I need it when I have to look down to see where to put my fingers. I don't care about the battery life, I want the option for the light to stay on ALL THE TIME. There are so many complaints about this and Logitech just keeps ignoring it.

I have an MX keyboard with backlight, but after 8 months the top layer came off from A, S, E and K due to normal typing. Bad quality and no way to swap the keys. No more Logitech for me.

They are good but I hate that you can't change or replace any switches or keycaps. For me that destroys the purpose of having a mechanical keyboard. Keycaps print on Logitech boards comes off after around a year every time. Then I have to throw it away as I can't replace any keycaps. So for me it's a waste.
