Summary

The NuPhy Gem80 is a TKL mechanical keyboard that sits at a crossroads between consumer-friendly prebuilts and enthusiast-grade custom keyboards, and the Reddit community largely views it positively after some rocky early days. The biggest story at launch was a firmware-related key chatter problem — double keystrokes and missed inputs — that plagued NuPhy's own Lemon switches in particular, though firmware updates eventually resolved it for most users. Beyond that stumble, owners consistently praise the build quality, multiple plate and mounting options, QMK/VIA support, and five attractive colorways for the price. It appeals to users upgrading from entry-level boards who want a more custom-feel experience without full DIY commitment, though the barebones purchasing model (switches and keycaps sold separately) has confused more than a few first-time buyers. Long-term owners report high satisfaction, with the keyboard holding up well after a year of daily use.

Pros

  • Multiple mounting styles (silicon socket, silicon strip, gasket) and four plate options (FR4, aluminum, PC, POM) give the Gem80 genuine customizability that NuPhy's Halo series can't match — reviewers called it a real step up for a stock in-store keyboard
  • Full QMK/VIA firmware support is a major win over the Halo line, which uses proprietary NuPhy firmware — a genuine differentiator at this price point
  • Five colorways (Mystic Indigo, Airy Lilac, Inca Rose, Cosmic Mocha, Obsidian Black) with matching keycap sets give buyers more aesthetic flexibility than most competitors in the segment
  • South-facing RGB switches solve the shine-through interference issue common on north-facing boards, a detail enthusiasts appreciated
  • Tri-mode connectivity (USB-C, 2.4 GHz, up to 3 Bluetooth slots) makes it flexible across desktop and mobile setups
  • Owners who swapped in third-party switches like Boba U4T, Holy Pandas, or Akko Silent Penguins report excellent sound and feel, with the board rewarding good switch choices

Cons

  • The launch key chatter issue — repeating or dropped keystrokes — was widespread, primarily with NuPhy Lemon switches; multiple firmware versions were required before stabilization, and some users never fully resolved it
  • Barebones purchasing model is confusing for newcomers: switches and keycaps are not included by default and must be added separately, which caught many buyers off guard and drew consistent criticism of the site's UX
  • No adjustable feet — the board ships at a fixed typing angle, which is a real drawback for users who prefer elevated positioning or need to fit it under a desk shelf
  • The magnetic GEM logo nameplate and glowing logo divided the community; many would prefer the cleaner aesthetic of NuPhy's previous dot-matrix LED design
  • mSA keycap profile (NuPhy's custom profile) has uneven legend printing in some colorways — users of Cosmic Mocha specifically noted inconsistent legend thickness on close inspection
  • No ISO layout option and limited layout flexibility (no split backspace or split right shift) make it a hard sell for European users and those who've grown accustomed to non-standard layouts

The Key Chatter Drama: Firmware Fix or Ongoing Headache?

The Gem80's launch was marred by widespread double-keystroke and missed-keystroke issues, especially with the Lemon switches. NuPhy pushed multiple firmware updates, but some users were still reporting problems after v1.0.3. Most long-term owners say it's resolved, but early adopters had a frustrating ride.

A Custom Keyboard Experience at a Semi-Custom Price

Compared to NuPhy's Halo series, the Gem80 is a different league: QMK/VIA support, multiple plates, multiple mounting styles, and south-facing switches. The r/BudgetKeebs community flagged it as one of the few in-stock keyboards that genuinely breaks the rules of what a 'stock' board can offer.

First-Timers, Read the Cart: Switches and Keycaps Are Extra

The barebones model trips up buyers regularly — multiple threads feature people opening their package to find no keycaps or switches. NuPhy's site does disclose it, but community consensus is the UX is poorly designed for anyone outside the enthusiast bubble.

Love TKL layout and the colors but kind of hate that glowing GEM logo.

This keyboard looks so good! I hope NuPhy will do another layout. I'm not a fan of TKL, would love to have GEM in a smaller layout.

The gem80 is a different class of keyboard from the halo series. The gem80 has customizable plates and mounts as well as multiple foam layers. Having used both next to each other the sound and feel are completely different.

Missed opportunity to put a rotary knob where F13 is.

Another TKL, however the beige one is looking good. Would be great to see an ergonomic split keyboard.

The Gem80 is really a fantastic keyboard for the price. I have two — one at home, one at work.

I have repeated clicks, its impossible to use. Apparently they are rolling out a firmware to debounce the clicks but this is a hardware issue. I am trying to get a refund but many folks are experiencing this.

My gem80 is using mint switches and also has the double press issue. Very noticeable when it double presses the spacebar key as well. Pretty frustrating for a basically 200 dollar board.

I just received another firmware update and it looks to have been fixed! I just did 20 minutes of typing tests and everything looks to be working as normal. The firmware version that I was sent was 1.0.2.

Congrats, just got mine too with same color + wrist rest. No double tap issues fortunately, with the mint switches.

There is a firmware that fixes the double click issue. If you encounter any problems, please contact support and they will get back to you within 1-2 business days.

I don't like that they're mangling the standard keyboard layout by swapping keys around. Print Screen should be where it belongs, above Insert.

I bought the lemon switches with my gem80, experienced terrible repeating, swapped them out for multiple other switches (drop holy pandas, Akko silent penguins) and haven't experienced any repetition whatsoever. I cannot possibly see how this is a firmware issue and not an issue with the switches.

I received the Gem80 in Indigo Blue - it performs and is as satisfying as expected. The weight was unexpected, it's very heavy compared to the Air75 so it's not as portable but it's definitely not going anywhere for my desktop setup.

It's truly a step up and in the right direction, and I am so glad they are now working to get their QMK right, unlike other companies that just install a fake VIA interface.

I just got this keyboard today, it's amazing but I can't agree more about the missing stepped caps lock keycap. Coming from MX profile, I really like the feel of the mSA but I dislike how close my finger rubs the stock caps lock key when using WASD. I loaded up this board with Boba U4Ts and it feels so nice. The sound is next-level for me.

Just when it was perfect, they add the F13 button thus ruining the classic layout of F keys. Why do they have to mess it up? Keychron at least offers variety.

I was hunting for the Mocha Gem80 and there were literally 5-6 units when it came back to stock and I was successful making a purchase. I did email Nuphy and they said next year there'll be a new Gem80. I've swapped the silicon sockets to silicon strips on the gasket and it made Panda Max switches more enjoyable.

Would probably buy it if they offered more layouts. Aluminum case and multiple mounting options for this price seem very nice, and had me very interested, but then no option for a split backspace and rshift just threw me off.

My first custom mechanical keyboard and couldn't be more happy with how it is! Super premium, the ideal amount of thocky sound, and feels amazing with the Rose Glacier switches.

Very curious what the main differences are between Gem80 and Nuphy's Halo series lineup. Both can be in that 75%-TKL layout range, normal profile. Only thing I can tell is Gem is going for a slightly more premium vibe and it's reflected in a small price increase.

You get 3 Bluetooth slots, plus 2.4 GHz so four wireless devices in total, and a wired connection too. You can also swap the foot pads if it's not the right height but yeah it is a drawback for me because I generally stow my keyboard underneath my desk shelf.

I found the legends on the Gem keycaps to be really inconsistent. Some were thick, others felt thin. My Cosmic Mocha set just does not look great on close inspection. I replaced them with some double shot ABS Cherry profile caps and have enjoyed those a lot more.

Yes. Love mine. Just got it. I did have to run a firmware update for VIA to work correctly.

I bought it and can't even use it. The F4 plate they sent isn't cut right so I can't place 9 switches in them. Very unfortunate.

I couldn't live without QMK/VIA. I decided that TKL layout is better for normal profile keyboard for work than 75% - it's less crammed. I have the Night Breeze in my Gem80 since today (replaced the infamous Lemons) - and I like them very much.

This keyboard looks amazing! Would love to have it at work but unfortunately need a numpad. Still considering getting it for myself though! Looks better than my halo75.

The logo is not that drastic in person and it is detachable so you can effectively replace it. Allegedly they will also provide options for this in the future to have a seamless experience.

Out of the box, the Lemon switches were unusable. The spacebar was by far the worst offender — mostly just repeated characters, nothing that fit a pattern, just random. I sent support an email complete with all the typos and requested either replacement switches or a refund.

Even though there is a 'themed keycaps' option, it only lights up for certain body colors. For cosmic mocha and obsidian black, the option does not light up and, since the picture shows the keyboard fully assembled with keycaps, I would assume that for these two colors I don't need to buy keycaps separately. The UX is not ideal.

All colorways have keycaps but they may have been out of stock. When I bought mine they weren't available but I followed up with email to support asking if they could bundle a set with my order when they come back in stock and they did.

The lemon switches were specifically problematic for a lot of people. Not really into the boards but the collab switches they've done that I've tried I really liked (baby raccoon, baby kangaroos).

I've had mine for 11 months now, and the double clicking drove me mad so I installed 3rd party software to stop it.

I love the design language and approach that they used, I just wish it wasn't a TKL. I like them a little smaller. I can agree to the rotary encoder instead of F13, but I don't find that I use the knob all that often now.

I was sent firmware fixes but they didn't fix anything. I was sent versions 1.0.1 and 1.0.3 but not 1.0.2.

I still think the wording in the first screen should mention that you have to select keycaps and switches to be able to type.
