Summary

The NuPhy Halo96/Halo75 V2 is a wireless mechanical keyboard that has built a loyal following thanks to its striking aesthetics, solid out-of-box sound, and QMK/VIA support — but firmware reliability is the community's biggest flashpoint. Many users report a genuinely enjoyable typing experience, while a vocal subset has been hit hard by wireless connectivity bugs, double-stroke issues, and input lag that can make the board nearly unusable. The choice between Halo75 and Halo96 comes down entirely to numpad preference, as the two are essentially identical in construction and feel. It's a board that rewards patient buyers willing to dial in firmware updates but is a risky buy for anyone expecting plug-and-play wireless performance.

Pros

  • Excellent out-of-box sound and feel — users consistently praise the poppy, satisfying acoustics with stock keycaps and switches like Rose Glacier, Silent Reds, and Night Breeze
  • QMK/VIA support gives advanced users full remapping flexibility; a community custom firmware further adds halo light control, key debounce tuning, and sleep timeout options
  • Upgraded RGB with a frosted diffusion layer that makes the halo glow noticeably brighter than V1, plus independent control of halo light, battery indicator, and badge lighting
  • Three connectivity modes (USB wired, 2.4GHz dongle, Bluetooth) provide flexibility; dongle mode is consistently reported as the most stable wireless option
  • Wide switch variety available at purchase including Raspberry, Mint, Lemon, Silent Red, and Night Breeze — allowing users to match typing feel to use case
  • Strong aesthetic appeal with multiple colorways and easily removable badge plate, making it one of the most visually distinctive boards in its price range

Cons

  • Firmware is a persistent pain point — multiple users report wireless dropout, keystroke lag, repeated characters (e.g. 'eueueueueu' loops), and firmware update processes that require a mobile phone for RF flashing
  • Double-stroke and missed keystroke bugs have been reported across both Halo75 and Halo96 V2 units; some users resolved it via firmware from support, others never did
  • Colored switch housings (Lemon, Raspberry, Mint) absorb RGB light and distort backlight colors — users wanting accurate white or blue lighting need clear-housing switches
  • Disassembly for modding is unnecessarily difficult; NuPhy's official stance discourages opening the board and documentation is sparse, making tape mods or foam swaps inaccessible to most
  • Bluetooth connectivity is widely considered laggy and unreliable enough that multiple users abandoned it entirely in favor of wired or dongle-only use
  • At its price point, competitors like Keychron Q3 Max, Epomaker Galaxy 100, and Lofree Flow Lite are raised as alternatives offering better QC or software ecosystems

RGB Looks Great Until You Pick the Wrong Switches

Several Halo V2 owners discovered after purchase that colored switch housings — Lemon, Mint, Raspberry — filter and distort backlight colors, making white LEDs appear pinkish or yellowish. Clear-housing switches are the fix, but that's an extra cost NuPhy doesn't warn buyers about upfront.

Beautiful Board, Broken Wireless — A Common Story

The Halo V2's wireless reputation is a real liability. Across multiple threads, users describe Bluetooth as laggy enough to abandon, 2.4GHz as finicky depending on USB port generation, and firmware updates that sometimes make things worse. Wired mode remains the most reliable option for daily work use.

Community Firmware Picks Up Where NuPhy Left Off

A community-maintained QMK firmware fork has become the recommended setup for power users, adding halo light VIA control, debounce tuning, and sleep timeout — features missing from the stock firmware. The fact that a third-party fix is the advised path says a lot about the state of official software support.

I have the Halo96 v1. I don't like not having qmk/via, but I really hate that badge they put on v2.

I have the Halo65 - keyboard looked and felt stunning, but was a nightmare to use: I constantly switch between Mac and PC due to work machines, some of my machines just don't recognise the keyboard at all and it just doesn't work. I get these weird typing glitches sometimes when I'm typing very quickly, where the keystrokes appear in different order to how I struck the keys.

Recently got my Halo75 V2 and I have to admit that I am pretty impressed with this keyboard.

My experience has been good so far the only issues I have are as followed. One I have to keep turning it off and back on again when I get to my login screen on my Windows PC each time I turn on my PC. Second for some reason the color of Blues and Purples looks very off on my backlight (they just look white or a white with a hint of blue to it) but as for the Halo light the Blues and Purples look fine. Not sure if its faulty RGBs or Firmware.

I went with raspberry for the low travel distance. Absolutely incredible for gaming, in my opinion.

I used to type on a Keychron Q6 QMK/VIA. It's solid, heavy, and built like a tank, but the lack of adjustable feet and the overall feel never fully won me over, even after modding it. Later I picked up a NuPhy 65% v1 and two 75% v2 boards, and I haven't looked back since. I use the NuPhy boards every day for work, and they're simply a joy to type on, light, fun, and consistently satisfying to me.

I'm crossing my fingers that they release some new firmware ASAP. I'm experiencing missed keystrokes in wireless mode and a slow wakeup via my Macbook Air. Otherwise, I agree with you on all points. I'm extremely happy, knowing my issues will likely be resolved soon. This thing screams quality.

VIA was working fine, but I found the default firmware to be quite limited so I flashed a custom one. For example, with the default firmware, if I adjusted the backlighting settings via VIA, then I would no longer be able to control it through the keyboard itself. The custom firmware also introduces various other features, such as having the ability to control the halo light through VIA, key debounce delay, sleep timeout, etc.

After changing all the switches and even the caps—twice—I absolutely lost my temper after yet another backspace misfire, and took the keyboard and smashed it against a short brick wall. I've never felt better after doing so. That keyboard is a piece of shit.

I've been emailing nuphy about how to open this board and it has taken over a week for them to finally send me a tutorial. They sent me a tutorial for the v1 and then sent me an email with no attachment. Their official statement is 'The keyboard can be disassembled. We just don't recommend that people who haven't tried disassembling the keyboard to do it.' Whatever the fuck that means.

I ordered mints on my mojito and raspberries on the mystic indigo. I was unable to use the mints after a few minutes, just too light for me. If I had to pick one and didn't have the option to change them, then I'd have to pick raspberries. As the OP said, the berries (and ALL the options they offer for that matter) distort the LED's which IMHO is one of the things Nuphy does best. So I have since changed switches in both.

I got a Halo 96% for my first mechanical keyboard in mid 2024 and it's been my daily keyboard at work (heavy computer work) and it's been amazing with absolutely zero issues (aside from the little rubber pieces eventually falling off the bottom of the adjustable feet because I move it around a lot).

Got a Nuphy; love the keyboard but the 96 form factor is still throwing me off months after getting it. I've always touch typed on a full keyboard and then more recently on an Alice (from Keychron) and I've never had the learning curve as I've got with the Nuphy. The layout is just different enough to confuse me.

Between those options I believe that the Halo would be the best choice. I have the Halo75 v2 and it's really well built and feels and sounds great. I love the look of keycaps but I'm more proficient with the cherry profile. I make less typing mistakes with those.

I don't think I've had quite as much trouble with mine as you seem to be, but you are completely right about the firmware being garbage compared to this otherwise beautiful keyboard. I'm a Mac user and the kbd supports Mac, but last I checked I had to download Windows specifically to update firmware because I was having an issue. When this one breaks, I'll be looking for a new one, I think.

Something that might be worth trying is a USB 2 port. I've had 2.4 GHz devices be unusable when their dongle is plugged into a USB 3 port that became perfect when plugged into a USB 2 port.

I get double strokes too, drives me mad. It improved after I switched from red to lemon (higher activation travel needed), but then some of the lemon switches seem prone to emitting double, so I swap bad individual switches out with new leftover lemons switches.

Cons with Nuphy lemon switches: the yellow color of the switches absorbs the RGB effect. It's true - have checked with sample lemon switch coming with board. So better idea is to buy Cherry MX Brown RGB instead of Nuphy Lemon. They feel identically.

Yes! I got the v2 with the silent reds and thought they were great. I'm definitely more a tactile fan but wanted to get something quiet to use at the office and not annoy people and I am very happy with how the silent reds turned out.

I just got the white one about a month ago and I LOVE IT! I got the Mint switches but I'm going to switch them out for raspberry ones. But yeah, love it it's a pleasure to use and sounds amazing.

Id start with the raspberries. Mints are so light they can induce errors.

I don't hate the halo series (i thought a lot about getting the 96v2), but i feel like Nuphy is really expensive for what they are. I find the keyboard sound is too clacky and for the quality I would prefer a lower price point. The colors are great though.

I've also returned to a Logitech, but I keep the Nuphy on my desk just to look at. Even wired it's glitchy.

It is a no go due to wireless problems. I bought Air96v2 and Air75v2 to use it in wireless mode, waste of money.

One year ago I bought Halo75 v1 because of south facing LED, look and feel. With Baby R it is out of box almost perfect. The only thing I need is VIA. The new one is for now just disgusting. The logo in top right corner looks ass, look like we will get south facing and the cheap/trash keycaps from Gem80, which are really a downgrade compare to Halo V1 series.

I have a Halo65v2 and put in some lubed and filmed MX2A clear tops and it's LUSH. lose a load of RGB but I just use the homing light on the alphas and kept those with raspberry switches.

I'm also experiencing a lot of problems with my Halo96 V2. Keystroke lag, repetition, complete disconnect with flashing ESC light indicating I know not what. Sometimes it will type the same characters over and over again like 'eueueueueueueu' indefinitely until I hit another key and break the cycle. Other times it works well, but I can feel an input lag as I type this. Going to reinstall windows to see if there's something wrong with the installation but this is intolerable and I think I'm out of options.

I have just find out that, If I have the color lights off, typing works very fast. No issues at all. If I switch on the colors, typing becomes a nightmare. If I switch the border color lights, it is worse. So there goes the lights. No colorful keyboard for me If I want to get the job done at night.

One I have to keep turning it off and back on again when I get to my login screen on my Windows PC each time I turn on my PC. Same and it's frustrating as hell TBH, especially since wired mode is the center of a 3-way switch and you have to carefully select it without going too far to the other side.

That is an absolutely ridiculous statement for something that should be moddable and beginner-friendly plus I previously opened my v1 and it was not fun but at least feasible, the v2 does not follow the same process and has still evaded being opened by me.

Mint switches are super light and I keep accidentally hitting keys when I rest my fingers on them. Raspberry requires a little more force and they're a bit more thocky. If you look at a key with the mint switch it registers as a press lol.

I love mine and use it for work. I use the USB dongle or hardwire, the bt connectivity is too laggy, but dongle works perfectly for me. I've had it for about a month and use daily for my 9-5 + weekend writing and have not found any shine on the keycaps or encountered any major problems.

I would go for it! I love my Blue Lagoon edition and didn't experience any kind of issue. It's a great looking keyboard with great sound, keycaps and RGB lightning.

Should be fine. I usually use my keyboards connected by USB but I've not had any issues with my Halo75v2 when used either with BT or the RF dongle.

I'm not a gamer with high expectations, nor am I a rapid typist, yet I still faced significant issues during daily use—so much so that it felt like the device would freeze or hang! Over the years, I've used around 50 different keyboards, both wired and wireless, at home and at work, but I've never encountered anything like this.

I didn't have too many issues with mine but still had some repeating keys and stuff, wasn't sure if I should keep it after reading lots of post of people having issues with it. In the end I returned my air75 and got a lofree flow lite instead.

I think you are losing your touch as a company. You started doing beautiful and tasteful keyboards. And now you are just dumping something new every 6 months, whatever it is. Go back to the concept board and keep innovating instead of attaching yourself to the money wagon of non quality, same as everyone else, products.

if you want to save some space on your desktop get a 75 if not and you use a number pad get a 96. I have had the 75 for almost 2 years now and it a pretty solid board in my opinion.

Personal preference. Do you want the number pad? When I am working at my desk I want a number pad so I'd go with the 96. The Halo96 is one of my favorite keyboards. If I am working somewhere else, like the dining room table, or a tray table at the couch, I like a 75 or even 65. The construction, connection, etc is pretty much identical.

Hi everyone, I bought the Nuphy Halo v2 96 a few days ago. I have an iMac M4. Since I need to create macro shortcuts for work, I can't figure out why it's giving me problems doing so. When I create the combo, for example, command + f and save it on the key I prefer, after a while the PC goes crazy and I have to reset the keyboard again.
