Summary

The Razer BlackWidow V4 is a feature-packed full-size mechanical keyboard that has earned a polarizing reputation on Reddit, largely due to a well-documented double-typing defect affecting its stock switches. The keyboard itself — with hotswap support, per-key Chroma RGB, magnetic wrist rest, dedicated macro keys, and an 8000Hz polling rate — is genuinely appreciated by those who haven't hit the switch issue. The core problem appears to be factory-overlubed switches (particularly the orange tactile variant) where lubricant migrates to the leaf spring and causes key chatter. Newer production batches and a firmware update appear to have improved reliability, and many users report success after swapping to third-party switches. It's best suited for Razer ecosystem users who want deep Synapse integration and aren't afraid to replace switches if needed.

Pros

  • Hotswap support makes the switch issue manageable — users report full resolution after swapping to Gateron Yellow, TTC Frozen Silent V2, TTC White Flame, or Kailh Box switches without touching the PCB
  • Feature set is hard to match at this price: dedicated M-keys, command dial/rotary encoder, USB passthrough, magnetic wrist rest with Chroma underglow, and 8000Hz polling rate
  • Stock orange tactile switches are praised for their sound profile — described as one of the best-sounding Razer keyboards out of the box, especially appealing for dual work/gaming use
  • Chroma RGB integration with the broader Razer ecosystem (Synapse sync with mice, headsets, etc.) remains a genuine selling point for users already invested in the brand
  • Newer manufactured units (post-IO24 serial numbers) and the latest firmware update have significantly reduced double-typing reports, suggesting production quality has improved
  • Build quality of the chassis itself is consistently praised — the structural frame, wrist rest, and overall feel are considered premium and separate from the switch defect

Cons

  • The double-typing/key chatter defect is widespread and well-documented — multiple users went through 2-3 RMAs before getting a reliable unit, and some experienced the issue returning even after switch replacements
  • At $150-$230 full price, hall effect keyboards (Wooting 80HE) and enthusiast boards (Wobkey Crush80, Weikav Stars75, QK Hex80) offer better value and reliability at the same or lower price point
  • Razer's customer support during the defect period drew sharp criticism — cases closed without resolution, and the company was slow to formally acknowledge the orange tactile switch defect
  • No wireless option on the standard V4 (only the V4 Pro 75% adds it), and the Pro variant's battery life is reported as poor even with RGB dimmed and polling rate reduced
  • Synapse software dependency frustrates users who want full media key and volume control functionality without background software running
  • ABS keycaps on a keyboard priced at $229 is a recurring complaint from enthusiasts who expect PBT at this price tier

The Switch Swap Workaround Is Real — But Should You Have To?

A notable contingent of V4 owners have fully resolved the double-typing problem by dropping in third-party switches, and several report the keyboard sounds even better afterward. The question Reddit keeps asking is whether a $150-$230 keyboard should require a $30-$50 switch upgrade out of the box to work reliably.

Razer's Ecosystem Lock-In Is the Real Reason People Buy This

Users who are already running Razer mice, headsets, and lighting setups consistently defend the V4 despite its flaws — Synapse cross-device RGB sync is a genuine differentiator that no competitor keyboard can replicate. For everyone else, the mechanical keyboard community is near-unanimous that better options exist at the same price.

Newer Batches Are Quieting the Critics

Several users who received units with IO24+ serial numbers or installed the latest firmware report zero switch issues months into ownership. The defect appears tied to early production runs, and recent buyers are having markedly better experiences — though the risk still exists and Reddit's institutional memory of the issue runs long.

The blackwidow I reviewed is still the worst keyboard I've ever used. The fact that people simp razer is absurd to me. Between their headsets, mice, keyboards, mousepads and more, most of it is trash even at their best. Some of their products are good for what they are, but you're also dealing with a shit company with shit QC. Tried so many of their products and always a huge disappointment.

The v4 is a hotswapable keyboard. If a key double presses.. replace the switch. 9/10 times it's because the contact point in the switch is crap or the contact points of the switch to the pcb aren't making a good connection. The blackwidow v4 has been a fantastic keyboard, if you replace the switches with non razer switches. The actual board is really well made and has a great sound to it but the switches razer uses are just junk.

I had a look over their spec sheet and apparently their switches come factory lubed with 205g0. Funny part about 205g0 is that albeit it's an amazing lube if it gets where it shouldn't (cough cough leaf) then you get key chatter which is exactly what OP describes. It's very likely their switches are just internally drenched in 205g0 which with regular use will migrate to the leaf and cause key chatter.

Search this subreddit for the 75% and you will find many people with issues. It's very widespread. The keyboard is great when it works. But don't expect it to work for long.

No reason I can think of to not buy it. Sure, the software sucks, but you really won't need to touch it once you have your extra keys setup. And I really love that style of roll bar for volume control, it's hard to find on mechanical keyboards for some reason.

One of the folks here who had double typing issue. I am on my third 75% and I really like how solid this keyboard is. If I have to I'll swap the switches, even have the Gateron Yellow replacements handy. Even with two RMAs I'd say it's a pretty dang solid device.

I bought one back in November and had the keys double registering issue in less than a month, returned it right away. Only reason I ever bought it was cause of all the positive reviews I saw for the keyboard. Sure it works great the first week or two but then keys start double registering for me and it was unacceptable for a keyboard at this price. I went to look up the issue and realized many others had the same problem.

Just my 2 cents here. I can't say about stock form, since when I received, I immediately changed it to TTC Silver V2 switches. But for months now my keyboard has been awesome and flawless ... :) maybe a bad batch of switches?

I'm on my second Black Widow with failing switches. I'm planning to build my own board in the near future.

For future viewers, I've had mine for nearly a year now and am currently typing on it. I don't know what this guy does to his keyboards but it won't be an issue for you. Coming from an enthusiast standpoint, it is actually a pretty nice keyboard. The stock orange switches feel pretty good, they are very tactile. It has a pretty decent sound profile stock and can easily be opened and modified to make it better, which I have. It also has hotswap, so it is very easy to replace the switches inside.

DON'T BUY THIS KEYBOARD I have it and some keys don't work and some keys double click. And razer support won't help me either.

I just want to add a comment that my keyboard is behaving exactly the same. And it is not even 6 months old. Crappy keyboard all in all...

Anyone still here I just wanna say that this is a SWITCH issue not a KEYBOARD issue and since the board is a hot swap keyboard, that means that you can buy more switches (that aren't even Razer brand) and it should work perfectly fine. Of course this doesn't make it okay by any means, Razer shouldn't be selling shitty switches.

I love mine and have never once seen a hint of the double type issue that others mention. That said, if I wasn't neck deep into the Razer ecosystem, I'd probably look elsewhere. I placed a preorder for a Wooting 80HE, but ended up cancelling it when I realized I'd have no inter-device options like I do with Synapse. Despite how much I like the keyboard, I know there are better options out there from better companies.

The pro was absolute garbage double typing all the time. Got the regular one with the louder clicking and it's great.

Don't buy this shit. I just got it 5 months ago and keys are starting to fade away — the E, Q, B, X, Z, S, D, R are working like 3/5 times and I take very good care of my keyboards.

Not at full price. I bought a refurbished one for 175 and that's the most I'd pay for one. The board is good - the construction is premium, the switches/keycaps and RGB are top notch. The dynamic scroll wheel is also very useful. The negative is that the battery life is pretty bad, even with minimal RGB and medium polling rate.

I have the blackwidow 75% and its genuinely the best keyboard I've ever had. The tactile switches feel good when typing (and way smoother than expected) and it sounds good even for mechanical keyboard standards.

Orange switches = faulty. Use anything else (since it's hot swappable) or expect to be returning it every few weeks. Razer won't acknowledge the quality issue in manufacturing, so there is no point other than using other switches if you like the kb. Dozens of posts online and they still don't give a shit.

It's not the switches, trust me. I have replaced ALL of them. It works fine for a few months after that and then the problem shows up again. This is the worst keyboard of all time. So disappointed.

Some people have said getting new switches resolved the double typing issue for them. Personally, I went through the rma process once due to double typing. Got the second keyboard and within a month it also started double typing. I bought Gateron yellow switches to replace the razer orange switches and within two weeks I have started getting double typing again. So at least for me it seems like it is a board issue and not a switch issue. Currently going through another rma.

I absolutely love this keyboard! However, after about two months, I started noticing some issues with double typing—initially, it was just a couple of keys, but then it spread to more. Luckily, this keyboard has a great feature: you can swap out the switches, which is pretty unique for a Razer model. So, I swapped to the TTC Frozen Silent V2 switches, which totally fixed the issue. In other words, the problem was just with the original orange switches, not the keyboard or its software. Now loaded with new switches, it's running perfectly.

Mine started doubletyping after 2 months, at first its 2 keys, then 3, 4, 6 all in a month... after that I replaced all of them with Kailh Box Silent Brown Switches on Jan 2025 and no problems since then, the keyboard is very comfortable now.

I started doubletyping very fast after buying it. Lowering the polling rate from 8000 to 2000 seemed to fix the problem though. But I liked my previous version (from 2016 I think) more, I also had USB ports on the keyboard. The V4 doesn't have it.

I had been a long time fan of Razer and had the V4 Pro for a few years. However, I got sick of having to fix the keys not registering or double-registering. At least with the 75%, the keys are hot-swappable so it doesn't require soldering to replace faulty switches.

I have the Black Widow v4 Pro and LOVE it. I've had to RMA it twice though for the double clicking and JUST received my 3rd keyboard back last weekend and so far it's working great. Also, it appears that Razer finally provided a firmware update for the keyboard so I'm hoping that update will resolve the double typing.

Its definitely hardware, but has nothing to do with the switches. I have the blackwidow v4 75% and I have swapped the switches more than once and still had the double typing issues. I tried to keep it clean when it started with the orange switches that came with it. Isopropyl alcohol fixed it for a bit but it would quickly come back within a few days.

Absolutely not. None of razers keyboards are even remotely worth buying. What would you like in a 75% keyboard? Aluminium chassis? Thocky sound? VIA/QMK? High polling rate? Quick disassembly? Hall effect? You can get a much better kb that fulfills all your requirements for much less than what you pay for razer junk.

Dunno if it's worth in your country, overall it's expensive, but very good keyboard and imo one of the best sounding (orange switches) in the whole razer lineup.

I bought blackwidow v4 x with yellow switches a week ago, had absolutely no issues with it, no double inputs, everything works alright. I wouldn't pay the full price for it, I'd recommend seeking a sale or something.

My green switch v4 pro keeps double clicking some keys and missing clicks on other (space specifically). I didn't realize it was soldered on so ripped it off. I have a replacement switch but I'm too frustrated to repair it today. I'm not in a mood for full disassembly.

Don't get it. I'm literally using it right now and the double and triple typing on it is crazy... I have it on at least 7 keys and the caps lock button (orange tactile switches). I have it under warranty so I contacted them and they said they're gonna send new switches. Then I go into my email a week later and they emailed me saying that they closed my case and didn't send me anything because I didn't provide my phone number.

To give you my opinion: the yellow switches are good but I'm on my second v4 x and going for the 3rd one. It just stops reading key inputs and you have to press the keys multiple times until it registers. Its a good keyboard when working but its annoying that this happens.

I've had the board for a month now and it's great. The culprit in all of these threads and reviews is that the orange tactile switches are faulty. They are actually made by TTC so not sure what the deal is. The board itself is fine. Tactiles on a gaming keeb ain't it anyway. Razer should sell it without switches or offer their yellows/greens as a stock option. I put Durock v2 screw in stabs in it, cut 2mm poron foam to line the bottom case, and swapped to TTC White Flame linear switches. Sounds incredible.

I had the black widow v4 pro for about 3 months. I really liked the keyboard but hated how loud it was (green caps), that's my fault though. In the short time period I used it, some of my keys started double typing. Even after doing various troubleshooting steps it didn't go away. I ended up using my warranty plan via best buy to get a full refund.

I bought mine locally so it has a 1 year local warranty and a 2 year manufacturer's warranty from razer. Around the 6th month it started having double typing issues on some keys. Now I had read about the double typing issue online and a lot of people suggested that replacing the switches fixed the issue for them. At first I just moved the switches around using the ones that worked but when most of them started failing I had to replace them all.
