Summary

The Razer Huntsman V2 is a full-size optical keyboard that polarizes Reddit — owners who got it at a steep discount tend to like it, while those who paid near MSRP feel burned by better alternatives at similar prices. The keyboard comes in several variants (full-size, TKL, Analog) with optical switches (red linear, purple clicky) and features like PBT keycaps, sound-dampening foam, and an 8000Hz polling rate. Community sentiment skews mixed-to-negative, largely driven by Razer's brand reputation, Synapse software complaints, and recurring volume knob failure reports. It finds its audience among users who want a full-size board with low-actuation optical switches without going custom.

Pros

  • Optical switches with 1.2mm actuation point offer noticeably faster response than standard mechanical switches — users coming from browns or linears consistently praise the speed
  • Sound-dampening foam in the V2 revision addressed the worst complaints about the V1, with multiple users noting the linear red switches are quiet and smooth in normal use
  • PBT keycaps are a genuine upgrade over the ABS found on competing gaming boards at this price — owners confirm they're more resistant to shine and feel better under prolonged use
  • The Analog variant adds adjustable actuation points and rapid trigger functionality, letting users set the Windows key to only trigger at full bottom-out to avoid accidental presses
  • Hot-swappable switches (optical only) give some upgrade path without soldering — the mechanism uses two latches and pushes out from the front of the board
  • At discounted prices ($63–70 on Woot), multiple users describe the value as strong for a full-size optical board with wrist rest and RGB wrist rest ring included

Cons

  • Volume knob failure is a widely reported hardware defect — multiple users across threads report it stops working properly within a year, sometimes requiring an alcohol spray workaround
  • Switch ecosystem is locked to Razer optical only — standard mechanical switches (including Razer's own orange mechanical) are physically incompatible, limiting customization compared to MX-compatible boards
  • The Analog variant has a known bug where it registers as an Xbox 360 controller, breaking controller input in games like Apex and Rocket League when the keyboard is plugged in
  • Razer Synapse remains a persistent complaint — one user confirmed it broke multi-key rollover on an older Razer keyboard after a driver update, and the software is widely described as bloated
  • The 8000Hz polling rate requires Synapse running in the background to function; without it, the keyboard drops to standard polling
  • At MSRP ($150+), alternatives like the Wooting offer superior rapid trigger (0.1mm vs 1.5mm sensitivity), and the Keychron K10 Pro undercuts it at $109 with hot-swap MX compatibility

The Volume Knob Problem Nobody Warns You About

Across multiple threads, owners report the volume knob degrading within a year of use — sometimes fixable with an alcohol spray, sometimes not. It's the most consistent hardware complaint on the Huntsman V2 and worth factoring into any purchase decision.

A Discount-Dependent Keyboard

At MSRP, Reddit is largely unconvinced the Huntsman V2 competes with custom builds or alternatives like the Wooting. At $63–70 on sale, the same users call it a solid buy. The keyboard's value proposition is almost entirely tied to how much you pay for it.

The Analog Version Has a Gamepad Identity Crisis

The Huntsman V2 Analog assigns itself as an Xbox 360 controller at the system level, which actively breaks gamepad input in some games. It's a niche bug, but for anyone who plays Apex or Rocket League with a controller plugged in, it's a dealbreaker.

I own this keyboard, it's fine. I got called out for having super loud keys in proximity chat in ARC Raiders which lead me on a journey to replace the switches - Razer decided that this particular keyboard needs twenty something screws to keep it together, all underneath the keycaps.

Razer keyboards hot trash. RK royal kludge is a much better option.

You can definitely build a 100% clicky switch board that's better than this for less than or equal to $115.

Have this keyboard. Unless you're just really into the Razer ecosystem or products, I'd go with something else. The switches aren't hot swappable and come from the factory needing lube.

I've been waiting for my black widow chroma to die for a decade at this point. They're overpriced and not great quality but they can last.

Optical switches are generally a lot more expensive than mechanical switches, and serve a bit of a different purpose. It's like comparing Granny Smith's to Red Delicious.

The custom keeb world hate full size keyboards and ISO layout so you will find most ANSI and 75% or lower keyboards, 100% keyboard and ISO layouts are rare to find and quite expensive. Keychron is one of the few custom keyboard brand that make good quality keyboard with full size and most ISO layouts.

It's $130. You're acting like it's $400 or something.

I find the Huntsman extremely sensitive and fast and it would take a while getting used to. If you're prone to typos and tend to rest your fingers, it might not be for you. But the TE would thrash any TKL competitors in terms of fast ping and low actuation force. The design and RGB is far superior than the Logitech G915.

Keyboards today are miles ahead of keyboards 4 years ago when this launched. Prices are through the floor for features that used to be luxuries. Some gaming brands have caught up on things like acoustics, customization and typing feel, at least partially. But I wouldn't recommend an older board like this.

Had a huntsman once. After a year the volume wheel stopped working and the armrest came apart. Spend the $70 and get a keychron instead.

I'll never understand how this subreddit thinks about money. Somehow a $70 keyboard and a $200 keyboard are budget starter options but $120 is overpriced? I won't lie to you, your board isn't really my style but if you're happy with it that's all that matters!

Not unless you want the analog, just get a Mini or a TE or even the Elite. TE has the lowest latency at 1ms if that matters to you.

I have the Huntsman Elite, it's basically indestructible. I had some problems with volume knob but I managed to fix it - spray some alcohol on it and violently with mild tension rotate it back and forth for a good minute. No problems after 4 years. Even the leather pad is alive.

It's a great keyboard with one HUGE flaw. If you play games with a controller then this keyboard can become a huge problem. For some reason it assigns itself as an Xbox 360 controller and takes that player 1 spot so it makes some games impossible to play with the keyboard plugged in. It happens to me on Apex and Rocket League. It is EXCEPTIONALLY annoying.

The issue with all the downvotes is that it's a shitty overpriced keeb from a shitty company. The switches aren't lubed, the keycaps are cheap ABS, the volume knob is REALLY bad and stops working well almost immediately, and you need bloated custom software.

Optical analog keys are still a novelty and come with certain complications and limitations. If you want to try it out and you're excited about analog possibilities then I'm sure it's a great experimental keyboard. But if you're just looking for a solid daily driver I wouldn't recommend it.

Yes, I would recommend it. I have a Huntsman Mini, which was the first Razer keyboard with Linear Optical Switches Gen-2, and it's very good. The switches have an actuation point of 1.2mm, which is low and speedy, and they're dampened so there's no ping. There definitely shouldn't be any ping with the V2 TKL since it also has dampening foam in the keyboard itself.

I bought the Huntsman V2 Linear Optical Keyboard full-sized about 8 months ago. Seeing a positive turn around with reviewers on the V2 with a lot of people only saying that the lack of lubrication on stabilizers was really the only downfall of such an experience.

I have one with red switches ... I completely recommend, quiet and very accurate and responsive, you can switch between gaming mode and typing mode.

You must have the purple switches. They're nice for gaming but I honestly prefer the red switches for the sound and smoother feel. This is still a very nice keyboard though.

They're linear optical, only linear optical will fit them. The orange switches you bought will not fit the keyboard. You want the red linear switches if you want a quieter keyboard and Razer don't sell them separately.

I have been using the V2 (Red) for the past 5 months now. I have the same usage, programming during the week and occasional weekend gaming. I'd say go for it, it's a really good piece of equipment. Though, I have to say that it will definitely disturb your colleagues if you decide to use it in an office setting.

Of the two you listed, probably the red switches. Probably would like something quieter if you're using it for a lot of productivity. For your use case, may be better to go for a custom. They're surprisingly affordable nowadays.

I wouldn't get none of these as they are very unreliable (vol knob problems & electrical shocks from the RGB hand rest with the Elite), and instead go for a custom build for that price.

It's one of Razer's better keyboards, it's out of stock a lot because it's popular. If you like the analog key feature then Wooting, some SteelSeries ones and DrunkDeer also have it.

It's an inferior wooting, but unfortunately there's also nothing else like it in the market that has analog, shine through PBT key caps, volume knob and full size ready to go out of the box. I bought mine open box for a wicked price on bestbuy. I don't think it's worth the full asking price. The rapid trigger feature is very cool but not nearly as good as the wooting (1.5mm actuation vs literally 0.1mm on the wooting and fully customizable through the whole key stroke).

I have this, as an overall keyboard its alright. The volume dial is poorly designed and seems to commonly fail. Mine barely works, but maybe you'll have better luck. I imagined the analog gimmick being useful to walk or creep around in PVP games where running makes noise. In practice, it doesn't work well in most games.

Rapid trigger - key resets as soon as it detects the key is moving in an upward motion. Adjustable actuation point - customize how the switch operates based on your own preference. You can program the Windows key to only operate when completely bottomed out so that accidental triggers do not happen.

It's actually a solid deal for a full size analog keyboard if you don't mind Razer and Synapse. This has optical switches and is analog where the activation point can be adjusted, so not comparable to a standard mech digital keyboard.

I got one just bc it's a good deal but I'm kinda turned off from razer keyboards since the new synapse software made my old og deathstalker stop having multi key rollover. I know it was synapse bc when I tried it on a different computer with a fresh windows install (aka no synapse) it worked perfectly until synapse was opened then auto updated the drivers.

I always thought of Razer boards as of overpriced crap, but the board ended up being not that expensive and actually quite good.

I've tried some of Razer boards and switches. I don't think the analog optical switches are worth it. It's a decent keyboard by itself, and the adjustable activation means you can set it how you like it. But the analog feature - its key selling point - is practically useless in the real world.

I have a Huntsman Elite and the only problem I had with it was the volume knob. The hand rest with the keyboard is incredible and it's well built with a metal finish.

I bought this last month from Woot and love it. Really nice keyboard and sound IMO. Definitely wouldn't spend the original $250 on it but for ~$65 it's fantastic. I switched the actuation to 3mm and that feels great. Wrist pad is plush and has a nice light ring around it that syncs up with whatever you have going on.

I grabbed the analog version of one of these a while ago for $120 as well & it's been pretty good so far. I love the wrist wrest tbh.
