Summary

The Acer Aspire 5 15 (2020) is a budget-friendly laptop that earns solid praise from Reddit users for its everyday reliability and upgradability. Most owners use it for school, office work, and light tasks, and the general consensus is that it punches above its weight at its price point. The Ryzen 4500U variant in particular draws attention for better battery life compared to the Intel version. That said, users consistently flag the dim, color-inaccurate display and weak stock RAM as notable pain points that require addressing out of the box. It's a practical machine for students and light users who are willing to do a RAM upgrade and manage expectations on the screen.

Pros

  • Ryzen 4500U variant offers noticeably better battery life than comparable Intel-based configurations at the same price tier
  • RAM and SSD are user-upgradeable — owners have successfully pushed units to 20GB RAM and swapped storage, extending the laptop's lifespan significantly
  • Handles everyday workloads well: MS Office, web browsing, video streaming, light coding in Python/R, and even light gaming at lower settings
  • Fingerprint reader included on some SKUs — a pleasant surprise for users at this price point
  • Value proposition holds up for budget buyers in the $400–$600 range, especially for students who need reliability over raw performance
  • Long-term durability reported by multiple owners — some users still running 2017-era Aspire 5 units with component swaps

Cons

  • Display quality is a recurring complaint: low brightness (~227 nits), yellowish whites, and poor color accuracy make it unsuitable for photo/video editing
  • Stock 8GB RAM runs into limitations quickly under Windows 11, which alone consumes 4–6GB — upgrade is essentially mandatory
  • CPU-GPU pairing criticism: some SKUs pair a powerful CPU (e.g., i5-13420H) with an underpowered RTX 2050, creating a mismatched performance profile
  • Battery degradation reported by long-term owners — one user noted capacity dropped to 36Wh (from 50Wh) after just 3 years of use
  • Coil whine from the fan reported on at least one unit, causing a buyer to return the laptop immediately
  • Better-specced alternatives like the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 (100% sRGB display, 16GB RAM options) are available near the same price range, making the Aspire 5 a harder sell on display and memory grounds

The RAM Upgrade Is Not Optional

Nearly every Reddit owner who uses it for anything beyond basic browsing recommends bumping RAM immediately. At stock 8GB, Windows 11 headroom is too thin for comfortable multitasking — but the good news is the slot is accessible and cheap to upgrade.

Good Laptop, Wrong Display for the Money

At this price, the screen is the Aspire 5's most criticized component. Competitors like the IdeaPad 5 offer 100% sRGB panels at a similar price, and Reddit users who care about display quality almost universally recommend looking elsewhere.

Students Are Still Running These Years Later

Multiple users in Reddit threads report keeping their Aspire 5 units alive well past the expected lifespan through DIY upgrades — new batteries, RAM swaps, SSD replacements. For a budget machine, its repairability is quietly one of its strongest selling points.

I know that it's not accurate but funny that CPU-Z shows your GPU with a 5000W TDP. Reactor core type stuff.

The specs look pretty good however I would upgrade the ram immediately. Otherwise it looks like it would do very well with gaming and coding.

Both the Aspire 5 and 3 are great options. The 15.6 inch Acer Aspire 5 you mentioned is great, but it might be above the budget you set.

Looking at the acer's low memory speed, bad display and no usb c charging, I would consider a Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14. For your max budget you have to compromise what's more important to you - better more color accurate display or 16GB soldered RAM.

The CPU is way overpowered for an RTX 2050 — it could be a great productivity laptop though.

I have it. The battery life is disappointing. If I have multiple windows open and am watching a video it'll last me an hour if I'm lucky.

It was meant as more of a joke title, didn't think people would take it so literally. But considering I only paid 500€ new for this I am happy with it. And yes, there is 4 GB on board memory and one RAM slot that I put 16 GB into.

I purchased it, came home and within 20 minutes was so annoyed by the coil whine of the fan that I returned it. Ended up buying a used ThinkPad, it's working wonderfully!

Yes, U mean it's battery friendly, and having upgradable ram and storage are always nice things.

Until I thought about giving her an Acer Nitro too since it's a much better line, but since she needs it for work and will move around with it, we thought it wouldn't be a good idea. I'm searching and looking every day until I find a good price. The model at that price is indeed a bit expensive.

What's going on with Acer Aspire 5 A515 battery? I don't know if I need a new battery or the power cord. When running on battery and I get the battery message 'critical low plug in' I do, and the laptop won't power back up when I hit the power button. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I bought in 2019 and still own an Acer aspire 5 A515-55g. Overall it is a good budget laptop suited for home office use and even gaming. TL/DR get this laptop if you're on a budget but make sure to get the version with a dedicated graphics processor. intel i5 1035g1 10th gen @ 1.2ghz ( capable of turbo boosting up to 3.6ghz when required) -DDR 8gb RAM. (4gb onboard and 4gb removable chip) -256gb SSD -Dedicated Nvidia MX350 2gb shared memory -15.6" 1080p IPS display

Yeah, I bought it. For the price, I am very happy with it. The built quality could be better but still decent. Then again, I didn't pay £800+ for it. For everyday use, the screen is good enough. I would personally recommend it.

I bought the £650 option, with the 1TB SSD since that was really the only option there. Am happy overall too. Fingerprint reader was a nice surprise. Didn't know I was going to get one. Do you feel the screen is a little yellowish - more so than normal. Had to download Radeon software to reduce the colour temperature. Even then I feel the whites are a little yellowish. Not ideal, but as you said, it's not like a £800 gbp spec machine. Can't expect a Retina display.

I don't get why companies put that CPU with an RTX 2050, it makes no sense. It's a powerful CPU with a rather low end GPU (it should go at least with an RTX 3060). I had something like that too, an MSI with i5 11400H+GTX1650 and it wasn't a good combination. I guess they do that because they have overstock on those GPU chips.

I've got the same one. Had it for 7 years, its been bugging for 3. The battery is now dead and it'll only turn on when plugged in, I've been out of storage for years and its all system software I can't change, as well the network capabilities are basically non existent now.

I have a similar Aspire 3 laptop, a Ryzen 3 3250U and I bumped it up to 20 GB as well. It's not ever going to be a beast and gaming is laughable on it even at 720p but for Netflix and web browsing and Youtube, it's great.

It's pretty good for the price but not a beast by any means, it's entry level gaming laptop.

I still use my 2017 Acer Aspire 5 A515 51G (i5 7200U, 940MX) by replacing and upgrading many components over the years. Added a 128 gb SSD to use as C drive as it came with 1 tb HDD, 20 gigs of RAM, replaced the screen casing as it fell apart a few years ago, replaced the webcam-mic module, just last week replaced the power jack as the charging was glitchy for several months, replaced the charger and battery a few months ago.

Should be excellent. I bought in the US last year an Ideapad 5 with a Ryzen 7 5700u. It works great: really nice speed. I do basic stuff: MS Office, Adobe Pdf editors, Prime Video, search engine work, Cisco Webex. Everything is great. The Ryzen 7 7730u is almost identical. Battery life is good too.

Battery life, on 40% brightness and on medium load, gives me around 8 hours easily. But when I am working under the sun with full brightness, the battery lasts around 4-5 hours. I don't have very CPU intensive tasks so when working indoors, the fans don't start. Means it remains cool.

I just got the laptop as well. Battery life is so so, 6 hours max. But I really like the laptop — the screen, the keyboard. I'm worried about the battery life though.

I use it for University, so Word Document editing, R programming, Powerpoint Presentations, Excel Tables, and occasionally I even play Elder Scrolls Online with it.
