Summary

The Acer Aspire 5 15 (2023) is a solid budget laptop that Reddit broadly recommends for students, productivity users, and light coders. The AMD Ryzen variants in particular earn praise for strong CPU performance and respectable battery life, while the Intel configurations are seen as more of a mixed bag. Most users acknowledge that the display is its weakest point — a complaint that comes up consistently across threads. If your workload stays in the productivity and light gaming lane, this machine punches above its price class; push it into serious gaming and you'll start hitting walls.

Pros

  • Ryzen 7 8840HS and Ryzen 7 7730U variants deliver excellent CPU performance for the price — users report smooth multitasking, coding workloads, and even light gaming on iGPU
  • Highly upgradeable: dual RAM slots (up to 32GB+), NVMe SSD slot, and Acer officially supports user upgrades without voiding the warranty — even includes hardware and guides in the box
  • AMD versions offer better battery life than Intel counterparts, with users reporting 6+ hours of light browsing and video, making it viable for a full school day
  • Good value proposition in the $400–$650 range — users consistently note it outspecs competitors at the same price point, especially on RAM and storage configurations
  • Lightweight build (~1.77kg on some configs) and clean aesthetic make it a practical carry for students and commuters
  • RTX 2050 and MX450 GPU variants can handle light gaming titles like Valorant, Overwatch, Rocket League, and Minecraft at playable settings

Cons

  • Display quality is the most common complaint — users describe the screen as 'foggy' and 'grainy' with poor viewing angles, despite the 1080p IPS label on some configs
  • Battery life on gaming or Intel configurations is disappointing — some users report as little as 1–2 hours under load, which is well below the AMD variant's ~6-hour ceiling
  • The RTX 2050 GPU is underpowered relative to the CPU in gaming configs — pairing a Core i5-13420H with an RTX 2050 bottlenecks gaming potential and makes less sense than alternatives with RTX 3060
  • Hinge durability concerns: multiple users warn the hinges feel fragile and advise caution when opening the lid, with at least one reporting a break within the first year
  • Keyboard heats up noticeably when the processor is under load, which can be uncomfortable during extended sessions
  • Coil whine has been reported on at least one Ryzen 7 7730U unit — enough to prompt an immediate return

The Screen Is the One Thing Redditors Keep Coming Back To

Across multiple threads, the Aspire 5's display gets flagged as its biggest weak point. Users describe a 'foggy' look and narrow viewing angles that make it feel worse than the 1080p spec suggests. If screen quality matters to your workflow, this is the trade-off you're making for the price.

Acer Actually Lets You Upgrade Without Voiding the Warranty

One detail that surprised users: Acer officially supports self-upgrades on the Aspire 5 — no warranty stickers, no hidden clauses. The box even includes the connectors and an official guide. Reddit users regularly recommend buying the base config and upgrading RAM and storage yourself to save money.

AMD Variants Get a Different Review Than Intel Ones

The Aspire 5 isn't one laptop — it's several, and Reddit treats them differently. The Ryzen 8840HS and 7730U versions get consistently better battery and performance marks than the Intel configs. If you're buying one of these, the processor variant matters more than almost anything else.

WTF would anyone nowadays use HDD in a laptop ?

I think Acer is decently solid in the budget class. They sometimes charge a little less than Asus and Lenovo do. So, they make some minor compromises. It seems mostly the speakers are not as good Asus and Lenovo, but it is a decent product.

I looked at one of these a while back and the only reason I didn't get it is because I wanted something that could play games slightly better. For everything else it would probably be perfect.

Ok so some laptop manufacturers including acer don't do such bullsht and actually let you open up and upgrade your laptop without voiding the warranty, no warranty stickers no nothing. They even include the HDD/SSD upgrade hardware (connector & screws etc) in the box AND official guides on how to upgrade your SSD or HDD. As long as you don't damage the laptop while upgrading it your warranty is not voided. More companies should do this honestly.

The specs look pretty good however I would upgrade the ram immediately. Otherwise it looks like it would do very well with gaming and coding

Be careful, the laptop has very weak hinges and I broke mine in less than a year.

the cpu is way overpowered for an rtx 2050 it could be a great productivity laptop though.

I have it. The battery life is disappointing. If I have multiple windows open and am watching a video it'll last me an hour if I'm lucky.

I actually just sold it a few days ago, the screen while 1080p has pretty bad viewing angles, most of the angles you look at it from look like you are looking at it through fog. Wouldn't recommend it unless you find it for super cheap, performance is pretty good for an i3 otherwise.

If you are on a budget, I see no reason why you should not consider this. I have owned Acer Aspires before and they have nothing but great. In the budget line, I think this stands out.

I purchased it, came home and within 20 minutes was so annoyed by the coil whine of the fan that I returned it. End up buying a used thinkpad, it's working wonderfull!

Currently in New Zealand — the laptop looks like a great choice at 920 NZD.

battery life if for browsing watching movie can last ard 6 hrs. for gaming 2-3 hrs only. build quality: when the processor gets hot the keyboard gets hot as well. lot ppl say need be careful when opening the laptop coz the hinges. overall like this laptop hopefully can last long. if u want to get, my suggestion upgrade to 24G Ram regret not doing that coz the CPU can take lots punishment but limited by 16G RAm

Bought a 15.6" Acer Aspire 5 earlier this year to replace my aged Acer 14 chromebook. It's great for basic use. Two downsides for me. One, I've learned that I don't like the number pad on the side. I much prefer a centered keyboard and touch pad. Two, the screen isn't as bright as I'd like it to be.

I don't get why companies put that cpu with a rtx 2050, it makes no sense. It's just that is a powerful cpu with a rather low end gpu (it should go at least with a rtx3060). I had something like that too, an msi with i5 11400h+gtx1650 and it wasn't a good combination. I guess they do that because they have overstock on those gpu chips.

Yeh, i won't buy a laptop like this again. Compared to other laptops screen looks foggy and grainy. Not sure if it's the coating, gonna upgrade to a ROG Strix soon tho, but this laptop had a good run.

Should be excellent. I bought in the US last year an Ideapad 5 with a Ryzen 7 5700u. It works great: really nice speed. I do basic stuff: MS Office, Adobe Pdf editors, Prime Video, search engine work, Cisco Webex. Everything is great. The Ryzen 7 7730u is almost identical. Battery life is good too.

I bought in 2019 and still own an Acer aspire 5 A515-55g. Overall it is a good budget laptop suited for home office use and even gaming. Get this laptop if you're on a budget but make sure to get the version with a dedicated graphics processor.

Yeah it will be good but in case you are a heavy multitasker like opening some memory intensive IDE and chrome... and your RAM is less like around 8gb.. then you might need to upgrade RAM

It should be great for just casual web browsing and watching videos. It could even play some light games. If you intend to do modern gaming on it your gonna need a better laptop.

Buy ryzen version with 16gb ram. It has a better battery than the intel version and windows 11 uses 4gb-6gb minimum so 8gb is not good

No overheating is actually very good on the i3 model. Don't know about the i5 model, can't guarantee your results will be the same.

I like the laptop performance and feature wise but the screen is very bad. Despite the 1080p resolution it looks like there is fog between you and the screen most of the time and from most angles. The laptop does not support charging from the USB-C port so if you lose the proprietary charger forget about charging it as that port can only charge other devices and transfer data. Otherwise the performance, upgradability and build quality is good.

I would have avoided the HDD for the occasional microstutter and possible data corruption (on being eventually moved while writing), but it's good that you can now work on the go.
