Summary

The Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 (2024) is widely regarded as one of the best premium 2-in-1 Chromebooks available, consistently praised for its snappy Core Ultra 5 performance, sharp 2560x1600 display, and solid build quality. It attracts users who want a capable Linux machine, a reliable convertible for school or work, or a premium ChromeOS daily driver. That said, sentiment is mixed on value — at $700 and up, some users feel the aging Meteor Lake architecture and 1920x1200 resolution on certain configurations hold it back from truly justifying the premium. The garaged active stylus (available on select regional variants) is a standout feature for note-taking, while its weight around 3.3 lbs and relatively weak speakers are recurring gripes.

Pros

  • Core Ultra 5 115U delivers noticeably snappy performance for ChromeOS tasks, Linux apps, and multi-tab browsing — users consistently describe it as a 'performance beast'
  • 2560x1600 QHD display (on applicable variants) makes text razor-sharp, a major upgrade appreciated by users coming from lower-res Chromebooks
  • Garaged active stylus included on select models, a rare feature in the Chromebook space that's been essential for students and note-takers
  • Exceptional build quality with a premium aluminum chassis and gold edges — Acer's keyboard quality is praised even by users comparing to older Pixelbook-era devices
  • Officially Chromebook Plus certified with full Google AI features, including Gemini integration baked into ChromeOS
  • Strong Linux support — users running Fedora and Linux containers report excellent compatibility and performance

Cons

  • Meteor Lake Core Ultra 5 is considered outdated by some enthusiasts; competitors specced with Intel Lunar Lake (Core 235V) offer up to 50% more performance and better battery efficiency
  • Speaker volume is weak — multiple users across different generations of the 714 report needing to max out volume for casual YouTube/streaming use
  • The 16GB RAM variant pushes past $1,000, which Reddit widely considers absurd for a Chromebook with a 1920x1200 display and 256GB SSD
  • Resolution downgrade from the older Spin 713 (2256x1504 / 201ppi) to 1920x1200 (162ppi) is noticeable for text-heavy work like coding in Sublime Text
  • Both USB-C ports are on the same side on the 2024 model — a design choice drawing criticism from users who rely on charging flexibility
  • Long-term Acer reliability concerns persist: some users report battery failures after 2 years and poor customer service response on hardware defects

The Garaged Stylus Is Make-or-Break for Many Buyers

Reddit users hunting for a 2-in-1 with an active stylus slot are finding the Spin 714 is nearly the only game in town — but availability varies by region, and the US models often ship without it, creating real confusion at checkout.

Is $700+ Still Justified When Lunar Lake Chips Exist?

A vocal portion of the r/chromeos community argues the 2024 Spin 714 is already behind the curve, pointing to Intel's newer Lunar Lake architecture offering significantly better performance and efficiency at similar price points elsewhere.

The Display Downgrade From the 713 Is Real — and Matters

Users upgrading from the older Spin 713 are noticing that the 714's lower pixel density makes text visibly softer, a surprising regression that's reshaping how Reddit thinks about which Acer Chromebook actually belongs at the top.

I just won't accept a Chromebook ESPECIALLY this one costing $700. The display is 1200p 300 nits, it has 256gb of storage, 12gb of ram. What makes this cost as much as a windows laptop, most of which would come with 16gb of ram and 512gb-1tb of storage, maybe an OLED display, and a full OS.

I've already owned an acer spin. Biggest POS ever. It's like a Chromebook if it sacrificed performance for gimmicks. Its ONLY benefit is that it has a long battery life. The ability to flip I rarely used because you just sacrifice keyboard usability for a mildly laggy on screen keyboard. If you're trying to drop $700 on a laptop, I'd recommend steering clear of this.

I think OP is talking about the newest 2024 one that was just announced, which has a 14th gen Meteor Lake processor. I think those are supposed to have more powerful graphics than previous generations, so I'd be interested to see how well Steam games work on them. I'd definitely want the 16gb ram option though.

Over $1000. 1920x1200 resolution. (sigh)

I was very excited for the new Samsung chromebook but I heard it was clamshell only and then no touch-screen. WTF? Feels like we're taking steps backwards. I get that the Chromebook Plus model caps vendors at a max price but I feel that may be a bad thing — I'd pay a little extra for a touchscreen.

I'm a huge fan of Acer Chromebooks, I feel like they offer the best built quality and surprisingly good keyboards even on budget models. However the current Spin 714 (2024) is kind of an uninspiring device that doesn't live up to its premium price. The Core 5 115U is based on the outdated meteor lake architecture and an odd spec for a premium Chromebook. They should've specced it with Intel Lunar Lake (Core 235V) for 50% more performance and higher battery life.

I have the new Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 and still within my 2 month return window with Best Buy. I'm floored. The Galaxy Chromebook Plus is not for me personally because I was looking for a 14" device specifically. I'm perfectly satisfied with the size and features of my Spin (though the weight is surprising at ~3.3 lbs).

My ChromeBook has 8 GB RAM and my ChromeBox has 32 GB RAM. I keep a lot of tabs open. The ChromeBook always slowed down. The ChromeBox hovers around 24 GB of ram used and it never slows down.

I have last year's spin 714 with 12th gen CPU and can attest that it is a great machine. I am a bit disappointed Acer removed the built in stylus in the latest model.

Looks like this could be the new performance king. Also has brilliant battery life. I've been looking for something to replace my Pixelbook Go i5 16gb ram for a while now, if only this was offered with 16gb ram too!

The lack of a touchscreen on the Galaxy CB+ coupled with the 1080p screen, gorgeous though it may be, feels like they put out an incomplete product they'll just refresh a few months from now.

The newer one has intel Arc graphics instead of iris. A pinch more horsepower for gaming but not sure if the steam support is in place for ultra 5 yet.

Basically top of the line for 14" 2-in-1 chromebooks.

I have the 714 and it's a performance beast. But my perfect machine would be a combination of the 714 and the Samsung Chromebook Plus. The AMOLED screen pops, but the 1920 x 1080 screen is soft on text. The Acer 2560 x 1600 makes everything razor sharp.

I have a 2023 model and it was retroactively given Chromebook Plus designation by a software update including Gemini. It also has a stylus with charging slot. The one that jumps out at me is Thunderbolt support.

The older one has turned into a Plus. I have one, and soon after they announced all the Plus stuff it got an update and now shows Chromebook Plus when it boots up. 2W also has the garaged stylus, as I think all the 714s do.

I have an older Acer Spin 714 (12th gen intel) which has really served me well. I think the keyboard is excellent (I do a lot of typing) as is the touchpad. I wish it were a bit brighter and had a better webcam, though. I believe that the two latest iterations of the Spin 714 have a better webcam.

Both are Chromebook Plus. I have Acer 714 Chromebook Plus with 8 GB RAM. This is a bit too expensive IMO.

With android moving to arcvm I am not buying a Chromebook with 8gb ram. 16gb is minimum for me. I got the HP dragonfly pro. But this seems to be a solid device. I think more OEM should bring a 16 gb version as well.

Just get an m1 air on ebay for $300 it'll be about the same price but infinitely better in every way that counts.

Bought one a couple of months ago for my daughter, though I'd happily use it myself. Seems a great balance, but also was the only 2 in 1 I could find with a garaged active stylus, which was essential for school. She's very happy with it.

I've had a 714 for a year. It's a great machine, particularly if you want to run Linux. Lots of power and very snappy. It's also Chromebook Plus.

I have the 714 with 13th gen i5. Previously owned the pixelbook which I loved, the 714 is ok. Speed wise it's very fast, screen nice, trackpad not great and speaker really weak. Have the speakers turned up full some times if I am listening to youtube whilst doing jobs.

I have the 2023 and can tell you it is a Plus model, when you boot you get the Plus logo and all of the Plus features. I would save the money and not get the newer one.

If they didn't do anything about the trackpad problems that plagued the 2022 and 2023 versions, I'd avoid the 714. I've been burned twice by quality issues on Acer laptops.

I have the latest Spin 714. The Spin is a great machine. I also use it with a portable screen connected with a C and it does great. It's responsive and never lags. The touch screen is very responsive, the brightness, crispness of texts — it's all there.

I can tell you from experience, twice actually, there is really no difference between 8 GB and 16 GB of RAM on Chrome OS, as I tried this a couple of times but I didn't notice anything. The way Chrome works, as soon as you open up the browser it will use up all RAM no matter what, 8 GB or 16 GB it's all the same. Plus that price is absurd for 8 more GB of RAM.

Ideally I wanted the HP dragonfly chromebook but they don't do it here in the uk, think it's probably closest in build quality to the pixelbook range. Like the 714 but don't love it.

I am new to Chromebooks and just bought my first one yesterday, so take my opinion as that of a newbie. I decided to go with the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714, and I think its great! It's pretty top-of-the-line as far as chromebook's go, with one of the best/newest CPUs you can find in a chromebook. I am still getting used to ChromeOS but so far I really enjoy it.

This model is a good, solid Chromebook Plus notebook. Plenty of processor power and RAM for most. Personally I think it would be a bit heavy, clunky to use as a reader on the couch or bed in portrait. I have nothing but praise so far. I use mine primarily for web browser consumption, light email/texting. I got mine at BB for $470 last September.

I've the pixelbook go myself and after playing with the keyboard of the new 714 I figured it would be a huge step down. The speakers were poor enough in best buy when I tried it. I'll hold off for now.

I have the Acer Spin 713 3W - the model with the 11th gen i5, 8gb ram. Got it open box from Best Buy for $350. Loaded Fedora on it, and swapped the drive for a 4tb NVME. The Acer Spin is a beast. Build quality is amazing, yoga book feature is amazing, screen resolution is GREAT and speakers are decent, not amazing, battery is also very good.

I got the one 2 generations back with garaged stylus. I had to get a few of these and return them due to persistent popping noise. Eventually the microphone died. The latest version lacks stylus, and they have now stupidly put both USBC ports on the same side of the machine. I like the specs on the 713 and 714, as well as form factor and general build quality, but I will not be buying a laptop without at least one USBC that can be used for charging in each side.

TBH, I don't mind paying $1,000 for a Chromebook if it's a high end premium device, like the one that HP released, but I'm not sure if the Acer model warrants that price.

I wouldn't trust Acer too far. I have the 10th gen spin 713 and the battery packed it in but it is a hardware issue that many people have had the same problem with. Acer just ignored it with no solutions in sight. I thought it was a great product but they don't have any customer service whatsoever. Screw Acer.

I've owned both of the devices and my main complaint with the 714 is indeed the decline in quality of the display sharpness, especially with reading text when compared to the 713. The different aspect ratio is something I'm fine with. Colors are also really good. But yeah, for me in the future I won't settle for anything less than QHD.

I'll never buy an Acer Chromebook again, purchased one of these high end models and the battery went out after 2 years. Couldn't find a compatible battery for the acer so I bought a MacBook Air for not much more money and I know that apple stands behind their products.

The Spin 514 with the Mediatek chip is way closer to affordable chromebook sweet spot than people give it credit for. That processor is doing some serious heavy lifting — super smooth UI, zero lag with multiple tabs, and crazy good battery life. It's not trying to flex benchmark numbers, it's just consistently fast and efficient in real-world use.

Apparently, the one I see on US website (Bestbuy) is sold without garaged stylus. On the pictures, you don't see the stylus. The few European sites who sells the 1HN (mostly Swiss sites) it shows and mentions the stylus. In Europe, the 2023 was also sold with stylus. Very odd. Maybe that's where the difference is between the 1H and 1HN.

I've had my 714 play videos for 14 hours straight non stop during a 40°C+ summer day in my room. Make sure to check for firmware updates.
