Summary

The Acer Chromebook Spin 714 (2022) is widely regarded as one of the best 2-in-1 Chromebooks available, earning consistent praise from real users who value its build quality, keyboard, battery life, and solid performance for everyday and professional tasks. It appeals to power users, students, Linux developers, and anyone wanting a premium ChromeOS experience without paying macOS prices. The 12th Gen Intel Core i5, paired with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD, handles browsing, video, Linux apps, and light Docker/coding workloads without breaking a sweat. However, some users report persistent hardware issues — speaker crackling and trackpad problems in particular — and Acer's customer support has drawn criticism. The 2022 model has since been retroactively upgraded to Chromebook Plus status via software update, giving it access to Google AI features that weren't available at launch.

Pros

  • Retroactively certified as Chromebook Plus — owners got Google AI features and the Plus designation through a software update at no extra cost
  • 12th Gen Intel Core i5-1235U with 8GB RAM handles Linux development (Docker, VSCode, PHPStorm, NodeJS) reliably, with one user noting it outperformed a Thinkpad T15s with a 10th Gen i7
  • Battery life is strong for typical use — 8–10 hours of browsing and media, though drops to 4–5 hours under heavy Linux/coding workloads
  • Garaged stylus is included and charges in the slot, a rare feature that the 2024 model dropped in some regions
  • 2560x1600 WUXGA display with 16:10 aspect ratio praised for sharpness and productivity-friendly proportions
  • Solid build quality, great keyboard and trackpad in most units — users frequently describe it as the best Chromebook they've owned

Cons

  • Speaker crackling is a documented recurring issue across multiple units — several users went through RMAs and still experienced the problem after replacement
  • Trackpad reliability problems reported across 2022 and 2023 models, with at least one user calling it 'relative garbage' and another returning multiple units
  • No SD card slot — the only storage expansion is via USB, which is a real limitation given the 256GB base SSD
  • 8GB RAM ceiling is frustrating for Linux power users — 16GB was unavailable on the 2022 model, and running Docker alongside Android apps can push the system to its limits
  • Design looks dated compared to the price — some users noted it resembles a 2010 machine aesthetically, with logo stickers that look cheap
  • Acer's customer support has been criticized for being dismissive, slow to resolve issues, and in one case sending back the wrong power cord after an RMA

The Speaker Crackle Problem Nobody Warned You About

Across multiple threads, users reported a persistent speaker pop or crackle triggered by notifications — even when the device is muted. Some went through two or three RMAs and still experienced it, suggesting it may be a firmware or hardware design issue rather than a defective unit problem.

Reddit's Verdict: Best Mid-Range Chromebook, Ugly Box

Users consistently rank the Spin 714 among the top 2-in-1 Chromebooks for its specs-to-price ratio, Chromebook Plus certification, and garaged stylus — but the aesthetic gets roasted. Multiple users mentioned the design looks several years old and that logo stickers on a $500+ device feel insulting.

Developers Are Actually Using This for Real Work

The r/Crostini community was skeptical, but owners confirmed the 714 handles PHP, NodeJS, Docker, and IntelliJ well enough for on-the-go development. The main caveat: RAM runs thin when mixing Linux containers with Android apps, and battery drops significantly under load.

I think the newest 2024 model has a 14th gen Meteor Lake processor. Those are supposed to have more powerful graphics than previous generations, so I'd be interested to see how well Steam games work on them. I'd definitely want the 16gb ram option though.

I'm a huge fan of Acer Chromebooks, I feel like they offer the best built quality and surprisingly good keyboards even on budget models. However the current Spin 714 (2024) is kind of an uninspiring device that doesn't live up to its premium price. They should've specced it with Intel Lunar Lake for 50% more performance and higher battery life.

I owned a previous version of the Acer Spin 714 and it was fantastic. Best of the 5 Chromebooks I have owned. Whatever you do, I'd avoid anything 4GB. The processor is less important but 8GB is the way to go.

I have a CP-713-2W with i3/8gb ram, and it's performance enough for coding in Pycharm/Idea/Rider at university and testing something in docker. However, it drains battery like hell: if I use the device for web surfing and android apps, battery is enough for 8-10 hours, but in coding conditions I can expect only about 4-5 hours on battery.

I have a 2023 model and it was retroactively given Chromebook Plus designation by a software update including Gemini. It also has a stylus with charging slot.

The older one has turned into a Plus. I have one, and soon after they announced all the Plus stuff it got an update and now shows Chromebook Plus when it boots up. The 2W also has the garaged stylus, as I think all the 714s do.

I have the 714 and it's a performance beast. But my perfect machine would be a combination of the 714 and the Samsung Chromebook Plus. The Acer 2560x1600 makes everything razor sharp.

Basically top of the line for 14" 2-in-1 chromebooks.

Reading some reviews it seems like this is a real good Chromebook. Sturdy, well built, nice specs (except the small SSD) and looking nice.

The Acer Chromebooks seem to have good battery life anyway. A good battery test is just to stream YouTube or Netflix for 3 hours and see how much battery is left.

I'm typing this on an Acer Spin 714 I bought refurbished a few months ago and I love it. I'm not so sure about the whole 'spin' feature. It's a little bulky and heavy to use as a tablet. But it has been a solid laptop. It is Chromebook Plus certified and is eligible for all of the perks.

Yes, I did get the 714. It has been great. No complaints. My kid used it mostly for school work and browsing.

I have had 2 of these. The first I bought 2 weeks ago and I exchanged it for another. I am coming from the OG Pixelbook with the i5 and I loved it but it was getting long in the tooth. I did research and decided the Acer Spin 714 would be a good replacement, especially since Best Buy was running it at $130 off.

I have the same crackling issue, even if muted, even if I am turning on Do Not Disturb. Basically, every time there is a notification coming in, the speaker crackles. SUPER ANNOYING.

If they didn't do anything about the trackpad problems that plagued the 2022 and 2023 versions, I'd avoid the 714. I've been burned twice by quality issues on Acer laptops.

I have the 2023 and can tell you it is a Plus model, when you boot you get the Plus logo and all of the Plus features. I would save the money and not get the newer one.

I've had a 714 for a year. It's a great machine, particularly if you want to run Linux. Lots of power and very snappy. It's also Chromebook Plus.

Bought one a couple of months ago for my daughter, though I'd happily use it myself. Seems a great balance, but also was the only 2 in 1 I could find with a garaged active stylus, which was essential for school. She's very happy with it.

Are the HDMI and Antimicrobial Corning Gorilla Glass logos stickers or are they permanently attached to the device? They look awful, I can't see how anyone could tolerate those on any laptop priced >$300.

I've never used the stylus for anything. I'd rather not have one just so there's less stuff I can lose.

I love the 713 and absolutely would have gotten that one if it weren't for the Chromebook Plus cutoff for CPUs being 12th gen.

If I could get a model with 16gb of memory, I'd jump on it. Quite happy with my 11th gen i7 chromebook right now though - great build times when compiling code.

I just purchased the CP714-1H-54UB from BB. I don't think you'll get better than the $579 price. Plus $50 additional off for recycling any old laptop if you have one.

If they can improve on the screen and make it a more sexier body then it'll have amazing sales numbers.

I have a 2022 version of the 714 and am very happy with it (paid $529). The screen quality is great. The system is fast enough to do what I need. The 8GB RAM, 256GB storage is a pretty good configuration. Note it has no SD card slot so if you want to add more storage, it's USB.

I picked one up a few weeks ago and it has been nothing but amazing for me. It handles all the Chromebook stuff I do, Linux has been great, other than steam being finicky, and my weird personal use case of reading ttrpg using Readers android app with it in tablet mode. 14 inches is perfect for my old ass eyes.

The Spin 714 is already available at Best Buy. I have it as my personal machine and I also have a Thinkpad T15s with 10th gen i7 with 16GB and Windows 10 from my workplace. The Spin 714 eats the Thinkpad alive.

I had to get a few of these and return them due to persistent popping noise. Eventually the microphone died. The latest version lacks stylus, and they have now stupidly put both USBC ports on the same side of the machine.

This model is a good, solid Chromebook Plus notebook. Plenty of processor power and RAM for most. Personally I think it would be a bit heavy, clunky to use as a reader on the couch or bed in portrait. I have nothing but praise so far. I use mine primarily for web browser consumption, light email/texting.

I am new to Chromebooks and just bought my first one yesterday. I decided to go with the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714, and I think it's great! It's pretty top-of-the-line as far as chromebooks go, with one of the best/newest CPUs you can find in a chromebook.

I came across this Chromebook while looking at less expensive ones at Best Buy this past week. The screen is underwhelming. Blacks aren't dark enough... they almost look like dark gray. I'd expect a better screen for that kind of money.

Looks very dated for a new expensive machine, saying goes sex sells, in this case it looks like a 2010 machine.

I just got the Acer spin 714 CP714-2W-56B2. It's excellent except I've found a bug in two different devices of the same model. The accessibility setting to play system sound on startup only works on restart or if you shutdown and startup in a minute or two. Any longer and it doesn't make the sound. I've called Acer numerous times and they can't come up with a solution. Their agents seem more concerned with getting me off the phone than really trying to help me.

I got a refurb Acer Spin earlier this year and regret it. It stutters while only watching basic video. My 5yo Acer Chromebook with a damaged keyboard outperforms the newer one in this regard. RMA didn't correct the issue and they sent back the wrong power cord.

I think the spin 714 (2023) is a great deal right now. It has good specs, extra storage, touchscreen, backlight, and 16:10. The new model doesn't seem to be much different aside from newer generation of internals. I need a new Chromebook and if I needed it today I would get that spin.

My daughter dropped hers at school while trying to put it in her backpack from only about 6 inches, and the screen spiderwebbed. This is supposed to be Gorilla Glass. No damage at all to the sides or outer bezel. And the touchscreen even still works fine. But I've been on with Acer's support and they no longer seem to be helping resolve it properly.

I used to do Drupal development on a 2017 i5 Pixelbook with 8 gigs using ddev local and docker, and I could see 8 gigs of ram being a potential issue. I was using roughly 4-5 gigs consistently with the Linux container and docker up. But I DID successfully develop, and any slowdown I experienced was mostly related to emmc and processor, both of which are better on the 714 by leaps. If you can go 16 gigs I would though.

I have the Chromebook x360 with 11th Gen Core i3 and 8GB RAM and it works great as a daily tool for development using VS Code and Docker. The only downfall is the 8GB of RAM. It is very easy to run out of RAM when I open some Linux apps. What happens most often is that the OS just closes Android apps when I run Teams and Spotify while coding.
