Summary

The Acer Nitro V 16 (2024) is a budget-friendly gaming laptop that Reddit generally considers a solid value pick, particularly for casual to mid-range gaming at its price point. Most users are happy with the RTX 4060 or 5050 configurations for titles like Forza, God of War, and Cyberpunk at medium-to-high settings. The main community complaints center around thermal management under heavy load and a known battery drain issue when gaming in Turbo mode — though many users report no problems on balanced or performance modes. It targets students, console converts, and budget-conscious buyers who want capable gaming hardware without breaking the bank, accepting trade-offs in build quality and display accuracy.

Pros

  • RTX 4060 handles AAA titles at medium-to-high settings well — users report 70–100 fps in story-driven games like God of War and Horizon Zero Dawn at mostly Ultra settings
  • Battery life in eco mode is genuinely impressive for a gaming laptop — the newer Ryzen AI 5 240 + RTX 5050 variant hits 9–10 hours of screen-on-time in light use, rivaling productivity laptops
  • Competitive specs-to-price ratio, frequently praised as one of the best value options in its price bracket for gaming horsepower
  • Both RAM and SSD are user-upgradeable, and upgrading to 32GB RAM is recommended to eliminate the 16GB bottleneck that users notice in heavier workloads
  • MUX switch available in BIOS for GPU-only mode, which resolves iGPU/dGPU switching issues and can noticeably improve gaming performance
  • Thermals are manageable on balanced/performance modes — users running under 75°C GPU on demanding titles, with repasting using PTM7950 pushing temps even lower for those who want extra headroom

Cons

  • The 135W power supply is underpowered for the full system draw — on Turbo mode, the battery drains 3–4% per hour even while plugged in, a documented hardware limitation that's generated significant community frustration
  • All-plastic build with no premium feel — noticeably heavier and bulkier than competitors like the Lenovo Legion Slim 5, which many users switched to instead
  • Display quality is a recurring complaint — the panel sits around 60% sRGB, which means washed-out colors; not suitable for color-sensitive work and mediocre even for gaming
  • GPU TGP is capped at 85W shared with the CPU, meaning real GPU power during heavy CPU loads can drop to ~55W — roughly 10% less performance than higher-TGP 4060 configurations in competing laptops
  • Fan noise is loud under load, and some units have reported coil whine and MUX switch instability causing crashes when using external monitors
  • Acer's after-sales support has drawn criticism — one user reported their GPU dying after a year with no resolution, and warranty service requires mailing the unit in rather than offering convenient local repair

The 135W Charger Problem Nobody Warned You About

The Nitro V 16's most discussed flaw isn't thermals or build quality — it's that the included 135W power supply can't keep up with the system's peak draw. In Turbo mode, the battery drains even when plugged in, a design choice that's sparked heated debate about whether BIOS downgrading or a third-party charger is the real fix.

Best Budget 4060 Laptop or Just the Best-Marketed One?

Reddit is split on whether the Nitro V 16 is genuinely the value king or just well-positioned at a price that obscures its compromises. The 85W GPU cap, weak display, and plastic build have pushed several buyers toward the Lenovo LOQ or Legion Slim 5 — often for not much more money.

Students Are Loving the Battery Life on the Ryzen AI Variant

The newer RTX 5050 + Ryzen AI 5 240 configuration is earning praise from a different crowd entirely — users who need an all-day laptop that can also game. With 9–10 hours of light-use battery life reported, it's filling a niche most gaming laptops completely ignore.

Only complaint about acer nitro laptops would be it's thermals, otherwise you can go for it without any issues! And no, the cpu wont hold back the 4070, would've been a different case if the gpu was a 4080.

Nope, its a very solid overall laptop. I have the 2023 nitro 5 which is literally just the nitro 16 but 15.6 inch and my only complaint is that this laptop used to run hot, but after repasting with ptm7950 temps are great now, the nitro 16 might be using better thermal paste than the nitro 5.

Nitro 16 have a good thermal, go for it! I have the same with 7840hs and 4060, thermal stays under 75c at max settings on Warzone.

You're getting 9 hours on daily use? If it has the RTX 5050 and Ryzen 5 240 then that's actually insane. Might get this one.

With the 4060, you'll be able to play any game happily at medium to high settings. You don't really need anything more unless you want to do 4k gaming. You can even try pushing 1440p at lower settings and you'd probably get a good experience.

On Turbo mode and performance mode it absolutely does discharge while plugged in. However it's the best bang for your buck as far as hardware. 3 to 4 percent per hour on average. Some games a bit more.

Some of the claims here are misleading. The Nitro line is mid-range, while Predator is higher-tier, so direct comparison isn't fair. Saying 'don't buy, it's a mess' oversimplifies things — many users report stable performance when using the right settings.

I've had the Nitro V16 for 3 days now and I'm genuinely impressed. In battery efficient mode, I'm hitting 9-10 hours SOT, with 12+ hours of standby, which is rare for a gaming laptop at this price. The overall value is hard to beat. No battery drain while gaming plugged in either.

I will likely get this as my next laptop. My MSI Katana A15 AI is so trash — for 144hz and 4060 it's absolute diabolical with constant fps drops, battery and heat issues.

I have this laptop for a few months now. The GPU has a TGP of 85w but that is shared with the CPU, so 55w for the GPU and 30w for the CPU. I am happy with the performance of it, I would say you lose at most 10% against a RTX 4060 with a higher TGP.

I have a Nitro V16, and it does everything I need it to do. It gets me 70 fps on Forza at max settings (ultra/extreme), and about 170 to 250 on medium to high. The main bottleneck is the RAM size — 16gb fills up before CPU and GPU reach full potential, so I'll upgrade to 32gb.

I ordered this laptop today. But now I'm concerned as I just watched a video saying it has low wattage and is crippled on performance. It is so hard to find info on exact laptop as there seem to be so many variations.

I got an anv15-51, the battery drain is there just not as fast. I got a 230w charger now and since I got more power I made my GPU use 140w max and not 75.

Have the anv16-41 and it served as a construction site radio — 12+ hours on battery without screen. Battery drain only happens on Turbo (TGP 85w), not on balance (62w) and performance (70w). Performance can show small drain of about 1% per hour.

The battery only seems to discharge for me when I'm on a Discord call and playing unoptimized games, and even then I've never seen it go under 95% after 4-6 hours. I've had it for about 4 months now and I'm absolutely loving it. It is also very easy to open up and clean the fans.

I got this exact same model for Black Friday to replace my old Dell G15. Build quality is okay, however spec-wise it is such a value for the price. No problems with battery drain on balanced mode. I can run Cyberpunk 2077 on high settings on it.

It's a decent laptop. The Nitro 16 is better than the Nitro V 16 overall, with a bigger battery and better GPU power limits.

I've seen on some websites that apparently all mobile 5070s are limited to max 100w. If all of it is true, it's both the dumbest and the most predatory design choice ever — castrating a 5070 to that point makes it equivalent to if not weaker than a 100-120w mobile 4070.

It's pretty solid, thermal was okay with stock paste but I changed to PTM7950 for motherboard concerns. Hinges are a lot tighter than Nitro 5s and really, really bright screen.

The Nitro 16 is mostly an okay choice without any major issues. Only downsides are its all-plastic build, and its large size and rather heavy weight if you will be using it often outside of your home.

Build quality, and thermals. It is very loud, and still manages to run very hot.

I bought this exact model a while back and the only issue I found is that it only came with 1 stick of RAM.

My Acer Nitro 16's Nvidia GPU died after 1 year and Acer support doesn't care at all. I'm stuck with this GPU-less machine.

Definitely a good overall laptop, just be aware that it can get loud under load.

For Overwatch at 120fps the Nitro V16 with RTX 5050 will handle that no problem. Under $1000 it's one of the better spec-to-price ratios right now for that performance tier. Acer Nitro build quality isn't premium but for the money it's hard to beat.

I just got it for 1100, yes it's a very good cheapish gaming laptop, no real issues BUT: It IS a hybrid CPU/GPU graphics, so if you're looking for NVIDIA updates on the GPU, remember to change it to GPU-only. My screen got some horrible glitches after I messed up the hybrid mechanism.

I have nitro v16 same specs and in Time Spy it gets the same score as Legion Slim 5 RTX 4060 105w. You can use Turbo mode so you will be fine.

Got mine but it seems that the battery drop is kinda bad. Might return mine — the 135w adapter doesn't seem enough for the whole system.

I bought the anv16-42 at $699 3 days ago. I noticed the battery drain earlier today. How stupid is it providing such a small power supply AND limiting the charging power so low in the BIOS?

I bought one brand new a week ago ANV16s-71 and it came with bad NVMe handling. Had to update BIOS and completely reinstall Windows from scratch as my drives were disappearing and triggering BitLocker 3-5 times a day — absolute dogshit.

This laptop is better than competitors like HP Victus or Gigabyte, but not as good as the LOQ or ASUS TUF. If you use it on performance mode it feeds the CPU and GPU 20w and 80w respectively, and you won't notice any battery drain in 99% of cases.

I updated AMD and NVIDIA drivers and the laptop restarts itself occasionally because of hardware issues with the GPUs. Contacted Acer support and the solution was to roll back to the drivers posted on their website, use NVIDIA only display option from the BIOS, or wait a couple of weeks until they release a new update.

I'm quite hesitant in getting this, since I see varied reports regarding the display. Some users mention 100% sRGB while others mention 60% sRGB with the exact same specs.

Had a model with the 4050 and a Ryzen processor — it would do 2.5hrs without any gaming, just office type of work, music, videos, etc. I reached out to Acer support requesting a replacement battery I could swap myself but they refused. Wanted me to mail it in, probably without it for a month.

I have Acer Nitro 5 AMD Ryzen 7 and its almost 5 years old now working fine. But the only issue is Windows 11 — when I install it, it keeps giving me BSOD. So I'm stuck with Windows 10. Be careful with Acer, they don't give proper software support.

I played Forza while plugged in, it did drain but very slowly, and only on Turbo mode. When I change to balanced, it's fine. No drain. My battery is still only on 4 charge cycles. Had it for 4 weeks, it's been on the whole time for 25 days.

I'm debating buying the same V16 for 1300€. In the spec sheet they mention the RTX 5070 is limited to 95W. The lack of a few key specs is making me want to avoid it — I just can't for the love of god find any info about color gamut for the 180Hz screen.

It is on the larger side of laptops — if you want light and portable, it might not just fit into a rucksack. It's rather heavy as well, definitely if you try to carry it with one hand.

I've heard the battery lasts only 2-3 hours while Acer claims 6-7 hours. There's also reports of the battery discharging while plugged in because of the 135w power supply.
