Summary

The Acer Swift 3 14 (2020) is generally well-received as a budget-friendly ultrabook for students and everyday users who need a portable, capable machine for productivity tasks. The AMD Ryzen 4000-series variant (4700U) gets particular praise for punching way above its price class in raw CPU performance, with Anandtech benchmarks confirming it matched Intel Ice Lake in idle power draw — a significant leap from previous Ryzen generations. That said, Reddit sentiment is consistently split: the CPU is impressive, but Acer undercuts the experience with a mediocre display, soldered 8GB RAM with no room to grow, and thermal management that throttles the processor under sustained load. Users who buy it for light use — browsing, documents, video calls — tend to love it; those expecting more headroom in multitasking or occasional gaming often feel let down.

Pros

  • Ryzen 7 4700U delivers exceptional multi-core performance for the price — Anandtech testing showed it matching Intel Ice Lake at idle (~1.0W) while outperforming in sustained workloads
  • Lightweight aluminum chassis holds up well to daily abuse — multiple users report surviving 4-foot drops with only cosmetic damage after years of heavy use
  • Battery life rated around 10 hours under typical use, making it genuinely backpack-friendly for full school or work days
  • SSD is user-upgradeable on the AMD SF314-41 variants, giving owners a meaningful path to expand storage down the road
  • Solid value for light use cases — browsing, streaming, Google Docs, and video calls run without issues even years into ownership
  • Backlit keyboard and USB-C charging are included at a price point where competitors often skip these features

Cons

  • Only 60% sRGB coverage on the display — color-sensitive work is off the table, and even casual users notice it's dim and washed out compared to IdeaPad 5 or Surface Laptop 3
  • 8GB soldered RAM is the biggest sticking point in Reddit discussions — in 2020 the OS alone consumed nearly half, and multitasking headroom is tight with no upgrade path on most SKUs
  • Thermal throttling under sustained load is well-documented — AnandTech recorded temps spiking to 95°C at 18W, limiting the 4700U to around 8W during gaming compared to its potential
  • Long-term durability is mixed — several users report display issues (flickering, vertical lines) emerging around the 3–4 year mark without any physical damage
  • No dedicated GPU means even light gaming titles push the machine to uncomfortable surface temperatures, with users reporting painful heat above the keyboard during Diablo 3
  • Competitors like the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 offered 16GB RAM and better overall specs at a similar or lower price, making the Swift 3 harder to justify on value grounds

It Survived Four Drops and Two Degrees — But the Screen Is Still Mediocre

Reddit users consistently praise the aluminum build's resilience — one owner bent a dented corner back with pliers and kept going. But nobody defends the display. The ~60% sRGB panel is the most criticized hardware decision across nearly every thread, and it's never been fixed across model years.

A Ryzen Powerhouse Locked in an 8W Box

The 4700U benchmarks beautifully on paper, but Acer's thermal design caps it at roughly 8W during gaming — a fraction of what the chip can sustain. The CPU is willing; the cooling system simply isn't built for it. Users who stick to light productivity tasks never hit this ceiling, but anyone who pushes it will.

Students Still Recommend It Years Later — With Caveats

More than a few Redditors credit the Swift 3 for getting them through full degree programs. It's light, it lasts a day on a charge, and the build quality holds. But they always add the same caveat: don't buy the 8GB version if you can avoid it, and don't expect much from the screen.

To get an idea how much power draw there is on the new Renoir based platform, we turned to BatteryBar Pro to log the power draw. The results were impressive. AMD has more or less matched Intel in terms of idle power usage with their Ryzen 4000 series. The first-generation Acer Swift 3 with Ryzen 5 2500U drew around 2.55 watts at idle, but the new Ryzen 7 4700U Acer Swift 3 idled right around 1.0 Watts, matching the 10th generation Intel Ice Lake equipped Surface Laptop 3. This is a big step.

It doesn't look that great with respect to competition. Lenovo's IdeaPad is similarly priced and there are others — but honestly I shared the review here for the comparison of how the 4700U stacks up vs the competition, as there's a lot of solid testing done on the chip here.

Ryzen made such a big jump with Renoir. I cannot wait to see more SKUs out there from OEMs.

That kind of display simply should not exist. I'm sure better color reproduction and slightly higher maximum brightness would cost nothing to the manufacturer.

TLDR: Ryzen is a beast as usual, but the laptop has: bad thermal performance (especially in gaming can handle only 8W), bad screen with just ~60% sRGB coverage, only 8 GB RAM. Quite common with mid-tier laptops, but in 2020 is starting to become annoying. I would gladly pay 150-200$ more if those three issues were solved.

Impressive performance let down by inadequate cooling, or a bad stapm profile. With an aluminum chassis it can probably be 'fixed' but disappointing it can't handle 15W out of the box.

This screen is unacceptable, especially when Intel gets 4:3 display and it will be much brighter with a lot better color gamut.

As consumers, we need to write to these OEM companies and demand better specs. Right now we have a Ryzen sport car engine packaged in a family sedan frame. These CPUs paired with better components will sell like crazy.

Just got an Acer Swift 3, the Ryzen 5 model, just over a week ago and it's running crisp right now. I got it for the same usage. You can upgrade the RAM which I plan to do at one point, even the SSD can be upgraded. Been using Chrome & Firefox while in a video conference on Google Hangouts and has not missed a beat.

It should be pretty perfect for you. Good price, very fast processor. Only thing that worried me in general was the 8GB of RAM but it should be perfectly fine for your needs.

Hi OP, just got the Acer Swift 3 SF314-42 model yesterday and it's pretty good at its price. The only thing I'm worried about is the RAM, because the OS took half of my ram (8gb), but the seller said it's upgradable, so I might upgrade it if I feel it's too small for me.

Laptops don't really break for no reason anymore. They just get too slow to use or we broke it physically.

Acer is killing it — they also have the cheapest Ice Lake laptop in this series, and with it, that's the cheapest machine to support DisplayPort 1.4 over Thunderbolt 3.

The Acer Swift 3 is a great laptop, especially since its refresh this year. If a 3:2 aspect ratio is your thing, the Intel model should be a great pick for you, and it's a really quiet machine. The AMD model is a powerhouse for the price. The battery life is good on both, and the screen is great.

I've never had an Acer last me long. They break so fast compared to other products. I think they have good designs and feel good to use just break often.

Win 10 doesn't play well with efficient cores. It doesn't have the scheduler from Win 11.

Use the Acer app or something to set a max charge of the battery (80% or something) if it is plugged in all the time. Plugging it in all the time isn't bad to do if you do this. What actually wears down the battery is draining and charging. Also keep the vents and fans clean from dust.

That sounds like a perfectly specced laptop for most use cases. 10th gen i5, 8GB RAM, Full HD screen and 512GB SSD.

I wouldn't even think about buying this. 8GB (I believe 2x4GB DDR4-3200) soldered RAM with a 4700U, really? That's disrespectful. I got a Lenovo IdeaPad 5, the 14" ~3lb one, with a 4700U, 2x8GB DDR4-3200 (soldered, but at least 16GB), 512GB, and type-C charging for $650 after tax. 8GB in 2020 is a terrible choice and really kills this entire laptop, but the rest of the laptop is pretty decent.

That and the poor screen — but what can I expect from a $629/$649 MSRP? I was going to recommend this for a friend to buy but I may have to look elsewhere now.

I have the previous Acer Swift 3 with Intel's quad core 8th gen. It's good, and battery life is ok, but it needs Windows precision drivers. It was a pretty good grab for $450 used two years ago, but I refuse to get another laptop without Windows precision. Probably wouldn't buy it again.

Disable Vari-bright from AMD Adrenaline, it makes the colors look awful.

A lot of Redditors have raised this problem with this particular model. It's very light and its cooling is inefficient but there might be a chance here — I see that the vents are on the back of the laptop and with a cooling pad you might get some results, but I'm not 100% sure.

Look into CPU undervolting guides for your laptop — a lot easier than it sounds. I had this problem on an Acer Predator, and after undervolting got a 20°C drop in CPU temp and no noticeable hit on performance.

I have been informed that the CPU is actually built to be able to run at high temps without issue. So we'll see. I am really enjoying the laptop otherwise.

Pretty much every gaming laptop is bound to heat up pretty quickly when doing any sort of CPU/GPU intensive task. It's maxing out your CPU/GPU, so it produces a lot of heat that needs to be dissipated in some way.

Mine lasted 4 years and sadly the monitor is now down. Never dropped or placed in a tight space, I never accidentally sat on it, but I just woke up one day and my monitor has vertical lines until it's flickering and graphics are about to display transparently.

It isn't that good if you want to use it for long term as it starts crashing after 3 years and is not that good at all.

Acer Swift 3 is good, I definitely recommend it. My Swift 3 lasted for like 3 years (due to a faulty charger that leads to damage to the motherboard).

Mine's fine, I use it for coding and can also play Valorant and Roblox on it, but it gets hot easily within an hour since it's not a gaming laptop. Overall it's fine though.

You can get more RAM, so I would recommend the version that comes with 16GB of RAM because it comes with everything you need: AMD Ryzen 7 4700U Octa-Core CPU, 16GB of RAM, good SSD storage of 512GB for faster boot up and loading, 14-inch Full HD IPS screen, high build quality, and backlit keyboard.
