Summary

The ASUS Chromebook Plus CX34 has earned a solid reputation on Reddit as one of the best value Chromebooks in its class, consistently recommended for students, web developers, and light productivity users. Community sentiment is genuinely positive — most owners report being surprised by how capable it is for the price, with recurring praise for its snappy performance, premium aluminum build, and exceptional battery life. It's not a powerhouse, and gamers or heavy multitaskers will hit its ceiling quickly, but for its target audience it delivers on its promises. The i5/16GB configuration gets particular love from users doing web dev, 3D modeling, and creative workflows, while the base i3 model satisfies most everyday users with room to spare.

Pros

  • Battery life is genuinely impressive — users report 10+ hours of real-world mixed use, with standby so efficient that some charge just once per week; the AMD CM34 variant is projected at 17+ hours in ideal conditions
  • Aluminum build punches well above its price point — multiple users describe it looking and feeling like a much more expensive machine, with a satisfying keyboard that has tactile clickiness comparable to higher-end laptops
  • The i5/16GB RAM configuration handles demanding tasks like web development, parametric 3D modeling, vector graphics, and light video editing without breaking a sweat, surprising users coming from heavier Windows machines
  • Matte IPS display with accurate colors and smooth scrolling — owners note it avoids the washed-out look common at this price tier, and the glossy-free finish is a recurring selling point for those working near windows
  • Excellent port selection including dual Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports on both sides, USB-A, and HDMI — making it a capable productivity hub with a dock
  • Recommended at scale by enterprise buyers — one municipality IT manager deployed 300 units to teachers and vouches for corporate-grade build quality and reliability

Cons

  • HDMI port is limited to HDMI 1.4, capping external display output at 4K/25Hz — a real limitation for users expecting a 4K@60Hz desktop experience; the i3 CX3402CBA variant is reportedly locked to 1080p@60Hz regardless
  • Base UFS storage is noticeably slow in file-heavy operations — users report sluggishness in the Files app, Linux containers, and large file transfers; one user confirms it's replaceable but notes it's an annoying out-of-box experience
  • Gaming ceiling is low — Steam via Borealis works for light titles on the i3, but Epic/GOG games via Wine/Heroic are mostly unplayable; users expecting any real gaming should look at Windows laptops or use cloud streaming workarounds like GeForce Now or Moonlight
  • No touchscreen on the standard CX34 clamshell model — the Vibe CX34 Flip adds a 360-degree hinge and touch, but at a significant weight penalty (1.81kg vs 1.44kg), which some users find uncomfortable for couch or lap use
  • Occasional build quality inconsistencies reported — some users mention screen flex, trackpad alignment gaps, and at least one unit literally falling apart with gentle handling; Asus customer service gets mixed to poor marks
  • Chromebook Plus branding adds Google AI features (Gemini Advanced trial), but the actual value of the Plus designation beyond Gemini is minimal — one user summed it up as 'rounded corners and AI crap I'd disable anyway'

Web Developers Are Using This as Their Daily Driver

Multiple Reddit users with professional web dev workloads — including one coming from a Razer Blade — report the i5/16GB CX34 handles their full stack without slowdown. It's become an unlikely favorite among devs who want ChromeOS simplicity with enough headroom for real work.

Is $400 the Right Price? Reddit Is Split

At its sale price of $300-$360 the CX34 is nearly universally praised. At full retail, the debate heats up — with the Acer 516 GE, Lenovo Flex 5i, and even the Vibe CX34 Flip all competing within a similar budget. The consensus: buy it on sale, and it's one of the best value Chromebooks available.

The 4K Monitor Problem Nobody Warned You About

Several owners discovered too late that the HDMI port maxes out at HDMI 1.4 specs, and some i3 variants are reportedly locked to 1080p output regardless of connected display. USB-C with a DP1.4 dock is the recommended workaround for anyone planning a multi-monitor setup.

I just got the cx34 last weekend and I'm loving it. I went all out and got the i5 with 16gb ram and 256 gig storage. My primary use is for web development and this book way exceeds all my requirements for that. My use cases which utilize heavy cpu are 3d modeling (parametric), slicing for 3d printing, vector graphics and basic video editing. It gets a little laggy with complex models but damn I am impressed.

The CX54 seems overkill. It's targeted at businesses. You haven't mentioned what you'll be doing with your Chromebook. If you need a bigger screen, go with the Acer 516, if you don't go with the Asus CX34. All of these Chromebooks actually have Thunderbolt 4.

I'm coming from a 2017 14" razor blade, and the form factor, like a mac, is amazing. I mean who could ever complain about machined aluminum? However, with the psu, it had to weigh 1000 kg. I like being mobile.

I have the same Chromebook. With only i3, 8 GB RAM and no dGPU in reality it is the initial entry point into Chromebook gaming using the Steam for Chromebook system, and even then with major limitations, mainly GPU related. It will never replace my much older 10th gen ROG machine with 16 GB RAM and Nvidia graphics running Windows.

Hi. Go for the Asus CX34 if you can get it. I've purchased about 300 of them to all the teachers in the municipality in which I work. Also the Intel CPU is faster and way less power consuming than the Ryzen. Ask if you have any further questions.

The CX34 uses UFS and LPDDR4x; the 514+ uses NVMe and LPDDR5x. The AMD GPU is much more capable than the Intel one. CPU wise, both can be configured with a range of TDPs so performance and power is highly contingent on how Google/the OEM has them configured.

Currently struggling on with a badly cracked chassis on a 5i. A lot of flex in the keyboard. Other than that it's a great wee machine.

And only Chromebook Plus models have rounded corners, which apparently matters a lot to some people.

I have the Asus Chromebook Plus CX34 and I love it! I got it at Target for $300 and it was the last one! The build quality and form factor are excellent and the construction is very solid, it looks like a much more expensive computer than it is, and it comes with a backlit keyboard and a bunch of extra Google goodies.

Yes also it has GPU which you can enable in developer mode, you can run Linux as well. And when aluminium OS arrives it would be ready for seamless google play apps. For GeForce Now, it has 144hz for the records. Currently one of the top still.

The speakers are bottom firing and sound above average for laptop speakers. Good volume, but not tinny. I compared them to the Acer 714, 516 GE and Pixelbook. I would rank these better than all three overall.

On sale for $299 at best buy, $239 if you go open box. Just snagged an open box one. Will be my first Chromebook.

I personally love mine. It is definitely heavy but that's my only complaint with it. For that price though, and if you want a nice little beast machine to use as your next chromebook, you can't go wrong. I bought this model for its touchscreen/360 screen, the price was great on Amazon.

I personally hate any laptop over 1.2kg. I keep buying used or sealed PixelBook Go. Great screen, great keyboard, great sound, great build.

I would say it did then run a little hot on the lap, just the back bit off center, no issues on desk, and no issues on the trackpad. If it's a good price then it'll serve you well, I think they're refreshing it with a newer gen cpu so might be worth waiting for that.

I have the i3 version and I can't get it to support 4k external displays. I've checked with intel and the chip should be compatible with powering a 4k display but my computer defaults to 1080p with no option in the display to change it to 4k.

After talking to Asus support - the hdmi port supports hdmi 1.4 only! 4k screens supported at 25 mhz. Using usb c I should be able to get higher refresh rates but the Chromebook did allow me to go to 4k when plugged into 4k monitors. My 7 year old asus flip has no problem with the same monitors over usb c. The cx3402cba fixed the max resolution at 1080p and the refresh rate at 60 mhz with these monitors.

I don't find touch to be important if it's not a convertible. I have two devices, both with touch. The convertible touchscreen gets used frequently and also some pen use. The non-convertible never gets touched. Touchscreens add weight, thickness, power consumption, cost, and other compromises. Making it mandatory would be bad for users who would prefer to prioritize those things.

Lenovo Flex 5i offers slightly more storage and has a nicer display but if you don't care about either of those, you are better off with the Asus CX34 because the specs are identical for the most part and they are going to give you similar performance. I have had a chance to test the Asus CX34 in bestbuy before and it is really lightweight as well.

I've been happy with my Asus CX34. I did add a Samsung 128G USB stubby stick (hardly sticks out, good for laptop) for some extra storage, though. Obviously that uses up one of the USB ports, and I don't use it for anything too permanent without backing it up somewhere else. But it's at least an option for more storage space.

I've had both Lenovos (I currently have a Flex 5 and 314) and a couple of Asus models (302C & an older model). In comparison, I'd have to say I'd go with the Asus. I use my Chromebooks for writing, so the keyboard experience is critical and I find the Asus models to provide better keyboards.

I went with the CX34. Your pricing may vary, but Best Buy has it on for about $360 US. It's not always that price, but they've had it on special for that price at least three different times since the summer. The Salem Techsperts guy on YouTube despises consumer grade Lenovo and HP laptops because of hinge failures, for what that's worth. That went into my buying decision.

I had an Asus CX34 for awhile and it was a good performer, but poorly constructed and literally fell apart with gentle handling. Their customer service is awful. I replaced it a few months ago with the Acer 515 on sale for $279 at Best Buy; it performs just as well and I like the bigger screen. I will never ever buy another Asus product.

It's pretty decent but the SSD it comes with is very, very slow. It is replaceable, at least on my 512 model, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

The slow storage is mainly noticeable in the files app, where it takes a few seconds to actually load up and browse files, and Linux. Not so much for general usage, which is still pretty snappy!

Intel core i5 12th gen? Of course it's good. If you put Linux on it you might have a rough time with drivers for your sound but is fixable with a script/driver you can download and it works on some distros. I stuck with chromeos and love it.

The screen is fairly average. The colors are acceptably accurate. It's not washed out like most Chromebook's at this price point. The motion is also quite smooth, I noticed my pixelbook has a bit of ghosting when scrolling quickly. The Asus does not have that issue. I do wish it was brighter as I live in a very sunny climate, but it's definitely adequate for indoor use. The glossy finish isn't bad at reflections either.

I really love it but having problems with the screen — while playing a live video after a while the video freezes on FB so when I try to either refresh it or click it off I get a black screen and the power light is still on. I have 2 other chromebooks and this does not happen.

I tried a glossy 450+nit display (not OLED) and you can either watch at comfortable brightness and suffer with the reflection or blast it away with high and uncomfortable brightness. If the reflection bothers you, high nit won't save you.

IMHO a convertible is the best CB you can get. When it comes to android apps a touchscreen is vital. My choice would be the CX34 or the Spin 714.

The build quality and feel of Asus is corporate. A nice leather sleeve is included in the box, at least in our delivery. USB-C ports in both sides would have been preferred — think the Acer has this. The Acer feel is that it's a consumer product. Asus is at least 100 euro+ in my market.

Speed: This new AMD 7320c chipset is quite capable. I have been continually impressed with the amount of multitasking I can throw at this device without seeing any slow down. Battery life: I have been missing out with the Pixelbook. This device lasts me easily 10+ hours of mixed use, and often is projected to get 17+. The standby time is fantastic, I charge it once per week so far.
