Summary

The ASUS Chromebook Vibe CX34 Flip is a well-regarded mid-to-high-end Chromebook that consistently earns praise for its strong i5-1235U performance, 144Hz display, and versatility as both a productivity machine and cloud gaming device. Reddit sentiment is mostly positive, with owners appreciating the build quality and snappy everyday experience, though the device draws a recurring complaint around weight (1.81kg) making it feel like a tank compared to lighter alternatives. The most debated issue is its exclusion from the Chromebook Plus program due to its 720p webcam — a decision many users find frustrating given that every other hardware spec qualifies. It appeals to power users who want a capable ChromeOS machine for web development, creative work, or GeForce Now streaming, but casual buyers wanting maximum portability may find the bulk a dealbreaker.

Pros

  • Intel Core i5-1235U delivers genuinely snappy performance — users report smooth 3D modeling, vector graphics, video editing, and complex browser workloads without breaking a sweat
  • 144Hz display at 400 nits is a standout spec at this price tier, making it one of the top Chromebook screens available for both productivity and cloud gaming via GeForce Now
  • Versatile 360-degree flip form factor with garaged stylus (on most models) adds tablet and note-taking modes that expand its use cases beyond standard laptops
  • USB-C supports external displays up to 3440x1440 at 144Hz, making it a capable desktop replacement when docked
  • Fan noise stays minimal during everyday tasks — silent for web browsing and streaming, only spinning up under heavy gaming loads
  • Linux support works well for developers, and the 12th-gen Intel chip enables GPU passthrough in developer mode for power users who want more

Cons

  • Weighs 1.81kg (4 lbs) at 21mm thick — noticeably heavier than competitors like the PixelBook Go (1.1kg) or the user's own ASUS CX3402 (1.44kg), limiting lap and travel comfort
  • Excluded from Chromebook Plus certification solely due to a 720p webcam — missing out on Gemini AI features, despite meeting every other hardware requirement
  • Stock SSD is very slow — users report sluggish file browsing and poor Linux performance, though the drive is user-replaceable on some models
  • Glossy display creates reflections that high brightness doesn't fully offset — users sensitive to glare may prefer alternatives like the Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE with its matte 350-nit panel
  • HDMI port is limited to HDMI 1.4, capping 4K output at 25Hz — USB-C is required for higher-resolution external display use at proper refresh rates
  • ASUS naming confusion between CX34, CX34 Vibe Flip, and CX34 Chromebook Plus creates real buyer uncertainty about which model gets Plus features

The Webcam That Cost It Everything

The CX34 Flip meets every Chromebook Plus hardware requirement except one: a 720p webcam instead of 1080p. Redditors are split between accepting it as a non-issue and feeling genuinely burned that such a small omission locked them out of future AI features.

Is a 4-Pound Chromebook Still Worth It?

At 1.81kg, this is one of the heavier Chromebooks on the market. For users who stay docked or use it on a desk, the weight is a non-issue — but those coming from lightweight ultrabooks consistently flag the bulk as their only real complaint.

The Sleeper Cloud Gaming Machine

Multiple owners are running GeForce Now Ultra on the 144Hz panel and calling it their primary gaming setup — one even prefers it over a dedicated Alienware gaming laptop for streaming. As a cloud gaming Chromebook, it quietly punches above its weight class.

You really should specify that this is the Asus Chromebook Vibe CX34 Flip, to avoid confusion with the Asus Chromebook Plus CX34, which as clearly stated in the name, does have Chromebook Plus.

It's a good device, just won't get all the fancy plus stuff, which honestly don't seem too impressive in the first place in my opinion. It looks mostly like they're getting onto the AI craze with bloat, I genuinely don't see a purpose for AI generated wallpapers, or AI image editing, but you might and not getting that would be a dealbreaker, so that's up to you and you might want to look for a different device if so. The only reason it's not considered a plus Chromebook is the webcam.

I just got the cx34 last weekend and I'm loving it. I went all out and got the i5 with 16gb ram and 256 gig storage. My primary use is for web development and this book way exceeds all my requirements for that. My use cases which utilize heavy cpu are 3d modeling (parametric), slicing for 3d printing, vector graphics and basic video editing. It gets a little laggy with complex models but damn I am impressed.

I've had mine for about a week now. I really like it. If you're looking for a good deal on it, keep an eye on B&H for a used model. It brings the cost down to $599. Streaming? It's probably close to 8 hours.

And only Chromebook Plus models have rounded corners, which apparently matters a lot to some people.

It looks nice but the coloured WASD Buttons are not my favorite style.

I'm coming from a 2017 14" razor blade, and the form factor, like a mac, is amazing. I mean who could ever complain about machined aluminum? However, with the psu, it had to weigh 1000 kg. I like being mobile.

I just got one a couple days ago. It's my first Chromebook so not much to compare to, but I really like it. Very snappy. The keyboard is great. The screen is nice and bright. Only complaint is it's a little bulky.

I personally love mine. It is definitely heavy but that's my only complaint with it. For that price though, and if you want a nice little beast machine to run/use as your backup or next chromebook, you can't go wrong. I bought this model for its touchscreen/360 screen, the price was great on Amazon.

Yes also it has GPU which u can enable in developer mode, u can run Linux as well.. and when aluminium os arrives it would be ready for seamless google play apps. For geforce.go, it has 144hz for the records. Currently one of the top still.

I think it was too far into development and/or production when Google first made the announcement of the Plus models.

I personally hate any laptop over 1.2kg. I keep buying used or sealed PixelBook Go. Great screen, great kb, great sound, great build.

If you have no use for it flip it. It's a steal though and unlikely to get another for that price. If it were me I'd keep it.

It is confusing. Too lazy to come up with distinctive names, I guess.

I've been using chromebooks for about 10 years right back to the Toshiba days. For Plus machines I personally think touchscreen should be a requirement what with play apps Etc.

I just did a quick test and it is OK. Not as good as a Samsung SPen on a Galaxy device, but acceptable. It's a different feel, but maybe I'm just used to an SPen.

I've got it and despite it only having a 720p webcam, its well worth the £600 asking price - this doesn't need to be a 'plus' model to be a premium unit.

I have one and like it. I'm using it at the moment hooked up to my viewsonic ultra wide screen monitor through usb c and I get a 144mhz refresh rate at 3440x1440. I'm an avid gamer and been using this with Geforce now ultra and its been great! I use geforce now ultra even on my gaming laptop instead of running it on bare metal. My gaming laptop is a alienware x15 r2 with a 3070ti.

I tried a glossy 450+nit display (not OLED) and you can either watch at comfortable brightness and suffer with the reflection or blast it away with high and uncomfortable brightness. If the reflection bothers you, high nit won't save you.

It's mainly noticeable in the files app, where it takes a few seconds to actually load up and browse files, and Linux. Not so much for general usage, which is still pretty snappy!

Intel core i5 12th gen? Of course it's good.. if you put Linux on it you might have a rough time with drivers for your sound but is fixable. I stuck with chromeos and love it.

Thanks for this too! I thought I had found the perfect device then got buyers remorse over the lack of plus certification, and updates. I don't care about AI features so ....choice validated.

I love it, I just wonder why, if Asus knew about the Chromebook Plus (which they must have), why they didn't just add a 1080p webcam and boom, the door to a bunch of features would have been opened.

I would say it did run a little hot on the lap, just the back bit off center, no issues on desk, and no issues on the trackpad. I ended up having to change it for a windows machine so I don't have it anymore but if it's a good price then it'll serve you well.

After talking to Asus support - the hdmi port supports hdmi 1.4 only! 4k screens supported at 25mhz. Using usb c I should be able to get higher refresh rates. My 7 year old asus flip has no problem with the same monitors over usb c.

Touchscreens add weight, thickness, power consumption, cost, and other compromises. Making it mandatory would be bad for users who would prefer to prioritize those things.

No I do not think it's too bulky for that use case. It's still a laptop so portable, just built more like a tank.

And you don't need to pay this much for a Chromebook just to play games on GeForce Now. I disagree completely with the reviewer, it was a bad proposition all along even when Chromebook Plus wasn't a thing.

I have this computer - it's the Core i3 / 8GB / 128GB base model which meets the spec for Chromebook Plus except for the low quality web cam. But I got a Pixel 8 which solves that problem. I can connect it and use as a hi-res web cam.

There are two out there, one with a stylus and one without. The Canadian one, I guess, doesn't have the stylus. Mostly movies/streaming/music, and I do like the streaming of games from my gaming PC with Moonlight on it.

I was looking at those too and saw this comparison table. It seems like 10 processor count vs 4 for the CX55.

I've been eyeing the cx34, and upgrading to the i5, more memory and more storage for $200 is something I've been thinking about. I just can't decide if it would be worth it for me. Kind of a catch all for everything. Would it be worth it to kinda "future proof" it a little?

All acer needed to do was add a 1080p webcam, they knew about plus.. so so sad.

The SSD it comes with is very, very slow. It is replaceable, at least on my 512 model, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

I'm looking at getting one as it's a good price at Currys right now, but saw a couple of reviews that said it runs hot and also that the trackpad is not very well fitted or smooth to use.
