Summary

The ASUS ROG Strix G16 (2024) is a well-regarded gaming laptop that attracts a wide range of buyers — from FIFO workers wanting portable gaming to CS students and content creators. Reddit sentiment is broadly positive, with users praising the build quality, display options, and raw performance across GPU tiers from the RTX 4060 to the RTX 4090. The main friction points are thermal management on the i9-14900HX and the bloated Armory Crate software, both of which the community has largely solved with third-party tools like G-Helper and cooling pads. It earns strong loyalty from users who stick with it long-term, with many reporting zero issues after a year or more of ownership.

Pros

  • Powerful CPU/GPU combinations — the i9-14900HX paired with up to RTX 4080/4090 delivers genuine high-refresh 1440p gaming, with users reporting smooth ultra settings gameplay across demanding titles
  • Premium metal chassis with solid hinge construction — multiple users specifically called out the lid and hinges as metal, contrasting favorably with build quality issues seen on competing brands like MSI
  • QHD 240Hz display on higher-end configurations is a standout feature — owners highlight it as significantly better than many competing laptops at the same price point
  • Strong value retention and resale market — a barely-used 4070/i9 unit sold secondhand for $1,050, while reviewers note the 4070 still outperforms the newer RTX 5060 by around 5% in raw performance and 10-12% in ray tracing
  • Highly tuneable with community tools — G-Helper replaces Armory Crate with a lightweight, feature-rich alternative that lets users control fan curves, CPU boost, and GPU modes, with users reporting idle temps dropping 10+ degrees after switching
  • VR-capable and handles demanding workloads beyond gaming — users confirm it runs VR headsets, Blender, DaVinci Resolve, and Photoshop without issue

Cons

  • The i9-14900HX runs hot by default — idle temps of 50-60°C and gaming peaks of 89-95°C are common and concerning for long-term longevity, requiring undervolting or cooling pads to manage
  • Liquid metal thermal paste application quality varies — some units shipped with poor factory LM application, causing thermal throttling that requires ASUS warranty service or DIY reapplication to fix
  • Armory Crate is widely considered bloatware — it consumes significant system resources and has stability issues; the community workaround is uninstalling it entirely in favor of G-Helper
  • Coil whine is a reported issue on some units, audible at mid-range fan speeds (1,500–3,500 RPM), which is particularly noticeable at idle or light load when fans aren't drowning it out
  • RTX 4060 configurations are seen as poor value relative to alternatives — for around the same price, users can find RTX 4070 laptops that offer roughly 20% better gaming performance, making the 4060 SKU a hard sell
  • Battery life is a non-starter for untethered use — multiple users flagged this as a categorical limitation of the platform, not a G16-specific flaw, but worth noting for buyers expecting laptop flexibility

G-Helper Is Almost Mandatory

Across dozens of threads, the first piece of advice from G16 owners is always the same: ditch Armory Crate, install G-Helper. It's not just a preference — it's the difference between a laptop that idles at 55°C and one that stays in the low 40s, with better fan control and zero bloat.

The 4060 Version Is the Weakest Argument for Buying This Laptop

Reviewers and community members consistently point out that at the G16's typical price point, RTX 4070 alternatives exist and deliver noticeably better gaming performance. The 4060 SKU only makes sense at a steep discount — users flag $1,099 as the threshold where it becomes defensible.

Long-Term Owners Are Surprisingly Loyal

While new buyers flood threads with thermal anxiety, users who've owned the G16 for a year or more mostly report smooth sailing. One owner checked back in after 12 months to say 'no complaints,' and the secondhand market reflects genuine demand — used units with premium specs sell fast and hold value well.

That laptop goes for around $1600 so definitely a steal if he didn't use it a whole lot and if laptop is not damaged. I paid $1400 for a asus strix g16 with ryzen 9 9955HX + rtx 5060 but fhd+ 165hz display so your screen is significantly better for much less.

50-60 idle and 89 in games are good CPU temperatures for that chip. If you're really worried about CPU temperatures though you can install G Helper.

I got the 4090 version and still get the same 30fps in town and group content with ultra settings. In less populated areas I get around 140fps. Even with the 4090 I still elect to use lossless scaling frame generation with WoW. It's not the pcs fault it's WoW's — I have similar experiences with a 3070 and 6700xt.

I added it to the gaminglaptop.deals site the instant I saw it. To be fair it was the same price last prime day, and you can get an RTX 4070 laptop for this money that will perform ~20% better in games, but yes this is a good price for the Strix G16, and when we reviewed it it had very few negatives. In summary, it's a good laptop and a good price for it, but you can get better performance for your dollar if that's important.

Today, we celebrate a true gift — G-Helper, the righteous alternative to the burden that is Armoury Crate. That wicked software, that resource-hungry demon — it creeps into your system, eating up CPU cycles, slowing down your startup.

UPDATE: i installed Ghelper and it has immensely improved my idle temperature by slashing 5-10 degrees. (50-60 to 39-49) I guess it was CPU boost and the fan curves all along. Anyways Thanks for everyone's advice and thoughts! I can sleep well knowing i have no liquid metal issues going on.

Please dude, go to the asus website to download the uninstaller for Armory Crate and use G Helper instead!

Before Ghelper my pc was always thermal throttling even after cleaning but now I get a max of 60 degrees, it also does not have bloatware and is 100% better than armoury crate without its janky amateur bugs

That would be coil whine. It shouldn't be heard that much but asus been increasing it and lowering their Quality control since they made Rtx 40 Gpu laptops. A problem for over a year. No, it's not a hardware issue. Just noise. But think of it, you pay that much money just to hear such noise when even the laptop is on idle? For me that ain't worth it.

Congrats. I got the 23 model yesterday myself. Found an Amazon Renewed i9 4070 with the Nebula display, per key RGB, 32 gigs of ram, and the light up num pad for 1300 and jumped on it. The Strix line is my favorite Asus laptops.

I have the 2023 G16 and mine sees similar temps while gaming. Mine has already been back to Asus and returned from them showing the same temps after a full diagnostic and relevant repair. From what I can gather these Intel laptop chips just run hot under load, which from what I've seen online isn't dissimilar to their PC counterparts.

The easiest way would be to reduce power limits. You can actually reduce power limits quite a lot for only a -5% performance loss. Doing this reduced my temperatures by about 5C. A laptop cooling pad also helps, although you really only have 2 options. A Llano or IETS cooling pad. All other laptop cooling pads are a waste of money.

As an Asus Rog Strix G16 owner I literally had the same cpu temperature values. I was also in panic as you when I bought my Asus Rog Strix G16 three days ago. When I stress the CPU and Ram monster softwares in my home studio, I see 89-92. It is around 50-60 at idle. The retailer said that it was pretty normal since the notebook has a powerful GPU and CPU. Don't worry. Enjoy your powerful notebook.

why don't people disable boost? 99% of games don't need your high-powered cpu to run at its max. you save 10+ degrees off the rip. and not losing any performance in game. i have had my laptop for 3+ years and never run it on turbo ever. game everything maxed out dual monitors doing all kinds of other shit at the same time, rarely ever see 80 degrees.

Got the 2023 G16 4080 model back in November, and I can tell you, it's a freaking beast! I mostly purchased it to play 1440p gaming, I was stuck in 1080p for the past 7 years, but with the G16 you can play on ultra+1440p.

Gaming laptops aren't that great, you can't play for more than 40 minutes without them shitting themselves, why do I say that? I have an asus rog strix g16 laptop with a 4070 and an i9 13980hx — the intelligence cooling can't even cool a 4070, I had to send it in for warranty because it restarted every time I opened a game, discord and Spotify and they wanted to void my warranty for a year after paying $2200 and they didn't answer my emails.

Perfectly normal, I've got the same machine and used to get similar temps. That was until I got the IETS-GT600 laptop cooler, and ever since the CPU temp never exceeds 75C under full load, while GPU temp hovers around 70C. Would highly recommend you get one!

You have G-Helper and ThrottleStop running at the same time. Don't do that, they are fighting each other. I would just use G-Helper if I were in your shoes. It does more than ThrottleStop, and I say that as a ThrottleStop fan. It's good software.

14900hx is still a top of the line cpu. At this price the 4070 is still a solid gpu. 5070 laptops can be found for twice the price and only offer like 10% performance uplift. The strix's screen and cooling should be good. Just upgrade the ram to 32gb and you're good to go.

Even without those, it's still a steal if laptop is in great condition. Rtx 4070 mobile is actually better than 5060 in raw performance (by around 5%), and ray tracing (by around 10-12%). And i9 is still very capable and will be for years to come so this is a great deal if you compare its price from other laptops which come with 5060 rn.

Oh wow looks like we bought it at the same time. Coming back to this thread to see if there are any issues for the HX cpu. Saw some talk they cause bios issues. So far, mine's running fine.

Its good, display is good, performance at 2k is good, but the Canada variant doesn't have a built in numpad on the trackpad which US variants do provide. If you can get that one, then it will be good, + buy rtx 4070 one if you want a little more future proof laptop. Apart from this, its a beast laptop

Undervolt that bad boy, you lose some performance but temps will be significantly lower. I am running on -0.15V at 110W TDP limit. I also capped at 5.1Ghz because heat seems to get way too high for way too little performance increase after that point.

Are u on performance mode and laptop isn't lifted or on a cooling pad? I think you have a 4060 or 4070. Shared heatpipe system is same as with rtx 4080 strix version. So your temps have to be lower. Maybe bad paste job of liquid metal from asus.

Something to note about is make sure it has the intel patch code for the cpu because if not then it's gonna kill itself and just open the laptop once, and see if there is a tape on the bottom screw hole of the fan because those models had motherboard burn in issues. And the cpu will run quite hot so probably get a cooling pad as well. Other than that it's a perfectly great laptop especially since you are getting it for much cheaper.

My brand new G SCAR 18 just got back from ASUS. It died after months. Thankfully it was still covered by the warranty because it was soooo expensive. I'm not especially confident it's gonna last that long.

Gaming for 10 hours in that heat may be your problem. This type of laptop will generate a lot of heat. Not just the CPU and GPU. The CPU and GPU have a fan and heat pipe to get rid of the heat. The rest of the laptop doesn't. I would suggest getting a good cooling pad or at the very least raise the laptop off your desk.

pretty sure the 4060 would have slightly more performance but the ryzen 9 will have also slightly more performance. But the big difference is that the 4060 is 140w and 5060 is 115w so if u want long life span of the laptop then get the 5060. If the screen is a big deal and u want that slightly better performance and ur willing to have less life span then get the 4060 one.

The 5060 will perform better as its more equivalent to 4070. The CPUs are similar in performance around 5% difference, but the other spec which could change your mind is the screen. If you don't need the higher resolution screen the 5060 will perform much better due to the gpu and lower resolution that demands less resources, but you need to add additional ram later.
