Summary

The ASUS TUF Gaming A16 Advantage Edition (2023) is an all-AMD laptop that earns genuine praise from its community for build quality, display, and value — especially when caught on sale. Reddit sentiment is broadly positive among owners, with most complaints centering on specific CPU configurations rather than the laptop as a whole. The 7735HS variants with integrated graphics are clearly the preferred choice due to meaningfully better battery life, while 7435HS models draw repeated criticism for running the dGPU constantly and delivering only 2–3 hours unplugged. Software setup matters a lot here: users frequently report that replacing Armoury Crate with G-Helper and installing AMD drivers without Adrenalin resolves most GPU switching and performance issues out of the box. This is a laptop that rewards buyers who take 20 minutes to configure it properly, and frustrates those who expect it to just work.

Pros

  • Exceptional build quality for the price — users routinely describe it as military-grade tough and more solid than competing HP Omen and Lenovo Legion units in the same bracket
  • The RX 7700S (in the FA617NT variant) trades blows with the RTX 4060 in rasterized workloads, and users confirm smooth 120+ fps in Battlefield 2042, CS2, and even Doom: The Dark Ages at high/ultra settings
  • 16-inch 16:10 IPS display at 165Hz with 100% sRGB is consistently praised for color accuracy and brightness — a clear step above the 16:9 panels on same-price competitors
  • Highly upgradeable: dual SSD slots and accessible RAM let users easily go to 32–64GB and 2–4TB, with several owners documenting straightforward upgrades
  • USB-C charging support and all-AMD hardware make it a standout choice for Linux users, with good driver support once kernel 6.4.8+ is used and asusctl is configured
  • 7735HS models deliver 10–12 hours of battery life on eco mode thanks to the integrated GPU offloading idle tasks — competitive with productivity laptops

Cons

  • The 7435HS variant has no integrated GPU, forcing the dGPU on at all times and tanking battery life to 2–3 hours — a significant caveat that's buried in the spec sheet
  • RX 7600S GPU performance is underwhelming for the price point: it sits between an RTX 3060 and 3070 in most benchmarks, and the generational uplift over the 6700S is minimal due to both using the same CU count
  • AMD Adrenalin and Armoury Crate cause frequent GPU switching bugs, low FPS issues, and occasional black screens — the factory software experience is notably rough compared to Nvidia-based rivals
  • ASUS warranty and repair service has drawn serious criticism, with Gamers Nexus documenting customer service failures that longtime ASUS fans found alarming
  • Linux users on kernel 6.11+ report screen flickering and display line artifacts, requiring workarounds like the amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10 GRUB flag — not plug-and-play for casual Linux users
  • Keyboard paint peeling reported on older units with heavy daily use, and a minority of users note light bleed on the display at pitch-black scenes

Fix the Software, Unlock the Laptop

A surprising number of owners report their A16 felt broken out of the box — low FPS, GPU switching failures, sluggish performance. The fix is almost always the same: ditch Armoury Crate for G-Helper and install AMD drivers without Adrenalin. After that, the laptop consistently earns praise. It's a great machine trapped behind bad factory software.

The CPU Model You Choose Changes Everything

The A16 Advantage Edition comes in 7435HS and 7735HS flavors, and they aren't interchangeable. The 7435HS lacks integrated graphics, meaning the dedicated GPU never sleeps — you get 2–3 hours of battery and a laptop that runs hot at idle. The 7735HS model offers 10–12 hours on eco mode. Reddit is clear: pay the premium for the iGPU version if battery matters at all.

Surprisingly Solid Linux Experience — With Caveats

The all-AMD hardware makes the A16 a rare gaming laptop that genuinely works on Linux, and a dedicated thread has tracked the experience for over a year. Kernel 6.4.8 is the sweet spot for stability; newer kernels introduce display glitches on some models. Users running Fedora, Linux Mint, and Arch report smooth gaming performance in titles like Cyberpunk, RDR2, and BG3 once asusctl and corectrl are configured.

I've had it for about 2 weeks now, and I love it. This thing is a beast, I've been running everything at max settings, or just about. Been running Doom TDA on Ultra, and Oblivion remastered on high. I upgraded the ram to 32gbs, installed a 2tb SSD, and got a cooling pad.

Elite use of the laptop. Didn't even think of running mobile games on it!!

The battery life and efficiency of the chipset is insane. But the performance uplift of the GPU is underwhelming at best. 7600s is barely faster than 6700s and slower than 6800s. Both 7600s and 6700s have 28 CU cores. So barely any generational uplift.

"Advantage Edition" - The only person who gets the advantage is the opponent it seems.

Laptop no issues, all hardware as advertised with no problems. Compared to the 2022 models, the monitor (screen) is everything I could have asked for. Nits are bright enough, not a dim monitor. Images are sharp and crystal clear. Fan noise isn't an issue. Fans are not loud, not silent. This laptop is military grade tough. The machine feels compact and very sturdy, MUCH more so than my HP Omen 15. Night and day.

Man the 7700S is easily the most underrated laptop GPU of 2023-4, I got this laptop too and it never fails to surprise me with what its capable of, have you tried the AFMF 2 frame generation yet?

My guess is the laptop did not switch from iGPU to dGPU hence performance sucks. Check in-game settings if the right GPU is listed.

I got the all-AMD Ryzen 7 7435HS, Radeon 7600S, 32gb RAM, 1TB SSD. For €1000 was awesome, the display is great, the battery life is not great but OK, I love the keyboard and the speakers. It is really well built, the material behind the display feels really resistant, and the back of the laptop also feels resistant. The Sandstorm model color is beautiful, it is light weight and compact. The REAL problem I had was Very low FPS in CS2 and other games. In my case it appeared to be due to the Radeon Adrenalin. I uninstalled everything related and installed Driver Only from the official website. After that the laptop turned out to be awesome. 140 fps on PUBG high, 200 fps average on CS2, 100 fps average on Bf2042 high.

I have the 7735HS model, which does have an iGPU and I get 10-12 hours of battery life on eco mode.

I have my A16. I upgraded the RAM to 32GB and 2x 2TB drives, replacing the components that came with the laptop. Heads up guys issues with memory clock on AMD GPUs and 6.4 kernels. The mclk issue most likely won't be resolved until kernel version 6.6.

Doesn't have igpu, otherwise i would buy it. Battery is one of the main advantages of a laptop and having a laptop with igpu really makes a big difference on overall battery life.

Gaming aside, most people who buy a laptop with a GPU want an Nvidia GPU for productivity. I personally couldn't get away with this laptop even if I wanted it.

Nice efficiency gains. Good performance per TDP. CPU performance is same as 6800H though. I got tired of waiting and assumed the prices of new notebooks will be obscene so I went with a 6800H/3070 Legion 5 Pro. This seems like a decent device though.

So I own this one personally. Bought it used actually and I love it. The RX 7700S on board is an 8 GB VRAM card. It does play most things, though more advanced games will require some tweaking. I personally mostly PC game for Elite: Dangerous and Planet Coaster so 8 GB VRAM is plenty for me. Otherwise I use it for photo and video editing and it does fantastic at processing those.

Literally the only selling point of this thing is good battery life relative to other 2.2kg+ gaming laptops. Bad screen bad chassis bad IO mediocre performance and most likely not even cheap.

For everyone with related issues, this has happened for a lot of people and apparently it's something wrong with AMD and the communication between iGPU and dGPU, the solution apparently is to stop using the integrated gpu with the cost of battery life.

Dropping some more info after some fooling around. Tested kernel 6.4.14, keyboard still not working. Reverted to 6.4.8. Regarding battery life, with asus-ctl and gnome, changing to powersave only changes the fan curves. Battery was lasting around 4 hours with dgpu disabled via supergfxctl. Installed corectrl, created a profile for powersave, changed cpu governor to powersave, disabled dgpu via supergfxctl, changed gpu to low, battery lasted for 8-9 hours.

I have an A16 FA617NS. I used the Kubuntu 23.10 daily iso to install from a thumbdrive. Everything works perfectly and power consumption is as low as 6w at idle and averages about 12w with Wifi, Bluetooth and Firefox running with the screen at 20% brightness and keyboard backlight on the first stage.

RTX 4060 for more consistent gaming performance, better Ray Tracing performance, frame generation support. 7600S for better efficiency and better battery life. I personally would go RTX 4060.

Not sure about fps cap but you can disable CPU boost on G Helper yes. I'm using G Helper because everyone says its better and less heavy, which I think so too. It feels more light than armory crate, also it has some screen color options which I liked too. But believe me, just put on balanced and you are fine, it's a good laptop. The thing I most liked is the build quality.. feels really reliable.

Important to note that the Ryzen 7 7435HS CPU lacks integrated graphics so the dedicated graphics card is always active and therefore due to this higher idle power draw, battery life will be poor. If battery life is important the 7735HS would have been the CPU you'd have wanted, this CPU has extremely similar performance to the 7435HS but has integrated graphics so the dedicated graphics card can be inactive and therefore a lower power draw when idling and noticeably better battery life.

I love mine, it's been a fantastic Linux laptop. Easy to upgrade ram, storage, wireless card. Runs everything that I've thrown at it. It could probably do with a repaste or phase change material for the cpu, that really cooks when playing demanding titles or doing heavy work loads (I've seen it hit 96°C) but that's to be expected from a laptop with a powerful cpu. I picked mine up at Best Buy on sale for $700 sometime early 2024. Looking forward to many years to come with this laptop.

I can't remember how much mine was, but it was on sale at Best Buy for under $1000. After upgrading to 32GB of RAM and throwing in a 1TB Samsung 990 Pro, I'm more than pleased with it. My only gripe is that the RAM is locked in at 4800 Mhz.

I got this a few weeks back when it was on sale at Best Buy. I'm delightfully impressed with the battery life, it is all AMD hardware, and I can charge it with my USB-C chargers. I have a 100w USB-C car charger so I can last the entire workday without having to worry about power. Oh, also I love the fact the display ports are not tied to the GPU like my Lenovo Legion I got a few years back. That was such a headache.

I just bought A16 model FA617NT and just love it. It smokes (2x faster) my budget gaming desktop with RX6600 GPU and 64G memory. I loaded Linux Mint Edge with latest Kernel on a newly installed Samsung 2T 980Pro. No Microsoft on my new laptop! The A16 runs cool and fast, no bugs, no extra drivers. When gaming I reached 1600FPS on one game, incredibly fast, and the cooling fans kicked in silently. You cannot hear the fans.

I have FA617NS with Fedora 38 on Wayland kde. I only noticed one issue so far: Bluetooth headset audio distortion after updating to kernel 6.5+. If bluetooth audio is important for you, I would recommend that you stick to 6.4.8 until further 6.5 releases or maybe even 6.6. As for gaming, I tried rdr2, doom eternal, cyberpunk, forza 4, tf2, cs-go, b4b, gta v, baldur's gate 3. Except for bg3, everything runs smoothly with very high/ultra graphics.

I'd say the RX 7600S (on average) performs more like in between a RTX 3060 and a RTX 3070, but it really depends on what games/apps you use. With the all AMD you're going to be sacrificing performance for efficiency.

Temperatures pretty good, not noisy. Really acceptable. I bought a cooling pad for 10 euro and I feel it helps a lot, but the laptop itself has decent cooling.

Used for less than 1 month. Without being plugged in, I use Armoury Crate's Windows mode and select Energy Saving. I get around 2 hours and 3 minutes for presentations via HDMI, and about 3 hours for web browsing.

Look at the FA617NT model, that one has a 7735HS and a 7700S. The CPU has an iGPU AND it goes on sale for around $700 during Back to School and Black Friday sales.

I got one in March. It's been running great overall. I got mine from Amazon with 1tb ssd and 32gb ram. I bought and installed an additional 2tb ssd in the 2nd ssd slot. This was fairly easy, besides the screw for the ssd slot stripping when trying to remove it. I had to order another screw to replace the original.

You can run Doom Dark Ages at Ultra with this thing? I've got the same model, and I wonder if there are any settings I haven't been using to make the most out of my gaming. I do have g helper, but that's about it.

I absolutely love mine, my main criteria was noise level and screen; the ability to change TDP and fan curve is absolutely amazing, I've set it at 40w and fans as low as possible, it's a lot quieter than other laptops (including MacBook Pro when playing games), the screen has accurate colours and is really good for an IPS. I hope asus and AMD will keep making these in the future.

Man I purchased the same laptop got a defected unit screen flickering and dead pixels on arrival contacted Asus support and they haven't responded since one week saying please wait senior team is discussing on the matter. Also when I tried running games the CPU throttles and temps always raise to 95°C idk if that's normal for a gaming laptop or not.

I found a thread that contains a review video that goes into details about some issues with the TUF A16. Also, another reddit user informed me of issues and possible straight up scamming by Asus' warranty repair dept. The user posted a link to a Gamer's Nexus youtube video where GN goes into lengthy detail the hell they experience with Asus' warranty repair dept. GN cites other Asus customers with similar issues. This is very disappointing considering that I've been buying and recommending Asus products for more than 25 years.

I've had mine for exactly 1 year now. Am on BIOS 414 and got some great performance improvements, but some instabilities are still there. Especially freezing on startup. My most recent scare was yesterday with a restart loop. Cycled 4-5 times. It's on latest AC, latest Radeon versions.

Been testing numerous linux distros on the FA617NT. Fedora Runs well and you have to make a change to get the video glitching to go away when accessing the gnome menu. FIX: edit /etc/default/grub with the following: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="rhgb quiet amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x10" then regenerate grub.
