Summary

The ASUS Zenbook 14 Flip OLED (2023) is a 2-in-1 convertible that earns genuine praise for its stunning OLED display and slim, premium build — but Reddit is split on whether the flip functionality actually delivers. Students and productivity users love the all-day battery life in light workloads and the versatility of tent and tablet modes, while others find the digitizer grid effect on white backgrounds hard to ignore. The stylus and palm rejection experience draws consistent criticism, making it a questionable pick for anyone serious about handwriting or note-taking with a pen. Long-term durability concerns — hinge failures, screen issues after a year, and occasional trackpad problems — are a recurring theme that potential buyers should weigh carefully.

Pros

  • OLED display quality is consistently praised — deep blacks, vivid colors, and sharp resolution make media consumption and general use genuinely enjoyable
  • Battery life in light use (browsing, streaming, Office apps) regularly hits 8–11 hours with Whisper Mode enabled and brightness dialed down
  • Compact and lightweight form factor at around 1.4kg makes it easy to carry between classes or meetings all day
  • AMD Ryzen variants (6800H/HS) offer strong CPU performance headroom for demanding tasks like statistical software, light CAD, and multitasking
  • Build quality feels premium out of the box — aluminum chassis, solid keyboard, and responsive trackpad under normal conditions
  • Flip and tent modes are genuinely useful for reading, presenting, or casual stylus sketching, even if not for serious pen-based note-taking

Cons

  • The digitizer layer creates a visible grid-like screen door effect on white backgrounds — distracting for word processing and spreadsheet work, especially up close
  • Stylus experience is poor: laggy stroke recognition, inconsistent dot input, and inadequate palm rejection that requires workarounds like an artist glove
  • Hinge durability is a reported weak point — multiple users note hinge failure after 12–18 months of regular use, with repair costs adding up
  • Real-world battery life varies significantly from advertised figures; heavy loads or Performance mode cuts runtime to 3–5 hours
  • Fan noise in Performance mode is loud enough to be disruptive; Whisper Mode quiets it but caps CPU performance noticeably
  • Limited port selection (one USB-A, two USB-C, HDMI) can force reliance on a hub, especially frustrating when USB-C is already occupied by charging

The Stylus Is the Weak Link

Reddit's clearest consensus: the Zenbook 14 Flip OLED is not a pen-first device. Palm rejection fails often enough that users resort to wearing an artist glove, and lag makes precise handwriting feel unreliable. If pen input is your main reason for going convertible, this one will disappoint.

Flip Premium vs. Non-Flip Value

Paying extra for the Flip model is harder to justify if you mostly type. Users who picked the non-touch AMD Ryzen variant consistently report better battery life and no digitizer grid complaints, making the standard Zenbook 14 OLED a smarter buy for keyboard-first users who don't need 360-degree rotation.

OLED Longevity Doubts Are Real

Screen failures, flickering after 12–14 months, and hinge wear show up enough across threads to be a pattern, not just bad luck. Users recommend buying with an extended warranty and noting that ASUS's two-year standard coverage can expire right as problems emerge.

These are actually pretty amazing laptops! Just need to be available about 10 months before they actually become available every single year.

I really do love my OLED on my ASUS.

I am somewhat of a Zenbook fanboy, using Zenbooks for over 10 years and very happy with them, especially their price/performance. I am coming from a Zenbook 14 UX433, so this will be also a bit of a comparison. I will be returning the laptop because of the glossy OLED screen — it seems all the new Zenbooks have these glossy OLED screens and I don't see a good alternative.

In its current form, it's simply too hot and loud and lacking in a few areas that can be easily fixed for its price segment.

ASUS quality keeps going down. I've grown increasingly disappointed by their laptop quality and their high-end motherboards. Nothing but issues with all of their stuff.

Battery life is great. For light loads like notes, browsing, YT or streaming services, and some Office 365 stuff, it will last all day. I didn't test it in one run from 100% to 0%, but from my experience, each 10% of battery equals ~1h SoT (whisper mode, WiFi 5GHz, ~50-60% brightness, keyboard backlit on, 2.8K@60Hz, HDR off).

The ryzen model is probably going to last longer bc it's the newest version rn. The i7/i5 models are massively outdated compared to the current intel core ultra processors.

This looks superb, but 45W seems much too high for a laptop. Performance mode is labeled 'high performance at the expense of noise', so normal laptop buyers would need to explicitly set 15W mode and try to find corresponding reviews.

I went to the store and checked out a few touch models as well, the digitizer was there but I wouldn't say it's super distracting if you really want a touch screen. The one I got is excellent so far, battery life is amazing (over 11 hours), it's light, fast, and overall a great investment I'd say.

As long as i7 cpu is 12th generation or newer, I would go for flip. I have zenbook 14 i5-1240 16GB for a while now and very happy with performance. Only feature missing is flip/360 screen for work with stylus.

I hope Asus comes to its senses and starts providing either a 32gb variant, or an extra SODIMM slot.

This is late but do not get it. For the love of God. The internals are excellent but the actual physical product is crap. The hinges broke after one year of using it and this is actually very common amongst the Zenbook. Would strongly recommend NOT to get it simply for that reason. Yes, you can fix the hinge but until the next one breaks, you have a ticking timebomb.

I wish I didn't buy mine either. Have had it for 9 plus months. The form factor is amazing, but I've been having issues. Touchpad stopped working completely a few months ago. When it tries to go into sleep mode after the set time, it gets the BSOD and reboots. I've been getting more BSODs on fresh boot-ups and other times randomly.

I got a Zenbook UX8402ZE, which is a very specifically-designed device. I took a risk — it's borderline gimmicky — but no regrets. For what I needed (photo/video editing), this was 100% a winner.

I can't get more than maybe 4.5 hours if I'm really trying. So many reviews say battery life is fantastic and I'm wondering if I must be doing something wrong.

I just bought one and I am so disappointed with the touch screen. I'm taking notes on onenotes and am using the asus 2.0 stylus and it just sucks. Feels like there is no palm rejection so i keep getting interrupted while writing. But even if my palm is not touching the screen the writing still feels laggy. It's smoother when you use cursive handwriting. But laggy when writing normally. Also, it doesnt respond well to dots.

I have a zenbook 14 flip with 6800h, the palm rejection is garbage. I had to buy an artist sleeve that goes over your hand to make it even work. I wonder if getting a different pen would help, the protocol is MPP.

I bought one a month ago. The digitizer can be seen on white backgrounds. Noticed it a lot in the first couple days but now it doesn't bother me at all. At the end of the day, it's not something that affects usability or enjoyability as it's mostly with browsing and word processor, and only if you're looking up close (not at regular typing distance). For media consumption, you get a beautiful OLED screen.

Don't buy the ASUS oled flip. The digitizer net pattern on ASUS oled touchscreen display is very noticeable especially in light and white background. Whatever 2k or 4k resolution is wasted on the lousy digitizer that makes it look 480p alike in light background.

I bought 5 months ago, the Asus Zenbook 14 Flip Oled UN5401 (Ryzen 9 5900hx, 16gb Ram, 500gb nvme) for 995 euros. The build quality is great and feels premium. The Oled screen is a game changer in terms of sharpness, colors and overall image quality, and the touch screen comes in handy from time to time.

I've got a flip 14 oled UP5401. Performance wise it's ok for intel graphics — I can run Red Dead 2 or Days Gone, even Elden Ring with good visuals. I think 90 refresh rate and 16gb of ram is solid. The bezels on these laptops are very minimal which makes them fragile at corners.

Mine has arrived today, and I've had to arrange an exchange with the retailer. The display would not come on, despite charging for a while. It looked/felt really premium in terms of hardware. My replacement one arrived the next day, and I'm really happy with it.

You are advised to thoroughly test drive your unit and prepare to request for returns, since most parts will be soldered and irreplaceable. These specs at $1600 seem a bit overpriced.

I sold my 185h ultra 9 zenbook and crossed myself. Opening a window with YouTube is already a problem with this intel processor — lag spikes for no reason, kind of a hot processor, very hard to use this laptop after a mac. I had the latest microcodes installed, always fresh bios, fresh windows, latest updates, fresh drivers. Nothing helped. It's just plain bad.

Asus Zenbook 14 OLED is not a good choice. After purchasing this laptop I regret. Asus doesn't quality control its products. The laptop is very slow, getting very hot and Edge and Chrome browsers, Word and Excel are crashing. Pointer is also not stable. I purchased the product and started using it, only to find the new product already has hardware snags.

The shitty heatsink and fan — when the load goes slightly over 30% the laptop becomes louder than a jet engine while the temps don't go lower than 85 Celsius. Also the lack of ports: only a singular USB 3.0 port on the left side, HDMI, audio jack, and 2 USB-C ports on the right. If you want to keep your laptop from thermally throttling and use a mouse, you have to buy a USB-C adapter.

I recently got the zenbook pro 14 jumping from a Razer 15. The gimmick is neat but it's not really helpful for what I use my laptop for (photo editing). I'd go with the non-flip zenbook either way.

I also read many reviews touting its excellent battery life and, like you, am getting 4-5 hours at best under light use. So disappointing!

I've had my Zenbook for about two years now and have had almost the exact same issues. Battery life and self-discharge? Terrible. My battery lasts max 4 hours on light usage. Sound is not great either — not really that loud.

I've had mine for 2 years or so now — it's Zenbook 14X OLED 2023 model. It has never experienced any issue whatsoever. The speaker is amazing, the OLED screen never flickered once and it has never failed me. I use my laptop daily for designing and sometimes AutoCAD. It's surprising that this laptop without a dedicated GPU can handle such tasks.

I've got Asus Zenbook 15 and absolutely love the display. The main selling point was the OLED display. I also figured I didn't need high powered GPU because I stream my 4080 desktop. The experience on the Zenbook is amazing.

I feel exactly the same about my Zenbook — I feel like the chassis is made from the weakest metal they could find on the market.

Today I found out my audio jack no longer works to give me audio. And that's after my laptop suddenly developing sleep issues where it won't properly go to sleep and drains the battery. I regret not buying the warranty extension and regret buying the laptop.

With model UP5401EA with touchscreen I am totally satisfied — 14 inch, touchscreen, flip, stylus. Yes battery might be better — peak was like 3 hours, now it is like 1h 30min after almost 2 years of daily using from morning to the evening.

I got a brand new Zenbook from my work. At the beginning it was wonderful, but after like 2 days of work, I put the computer to sleep for 5 minutes, and when I turned it on again the trackpad wasn't working correctly — lagging, random gestures and taps without any reason, impossible to scroll using two fingers.

My screen just broke this week. OLED panel damage even when it's just sitting on my table. Also, my 2 year warranty ended earlier this month.

Put it on Whisper Mode via the MyAsus app, and lower the backlight as much as you can tolerate. Advertised battery life is under ideal conditions.

I have the zenbook touch — it's amazing but the battery drains so fast. It's good for occasional gaming and office work; it runs Valorant at 100 fps easily.
