Summary

The ASUS Zenbook 14X OLED UX3404 (2023) earns consistent praise for its stunning OLED display, solid build quality, and competitive value for a premium ultrabook — but battery life is a recurring frustration that divides the community. Users coming from MacBooks and Surface laptops often describe it as a pleasant surprise, especially given the metal chassis, responsive trackpad, and booming speakers. The 13th gen Intel platform is the main weak point: the power-hungry CPUs, particularly the i9-13900H, can drain the 70Wh battery in under 3 hours under real-world conditions. The touchscreen variant also carries a polarizing screen door effect (SDE) that has pushed some buyers to return the unit outright, while others say it's only noticeable up close on white backgrounds. Overall, this is a well-regarded ultrabook for productivity and media consumption, but buyers should go in with realistic battery expectations and ideally audition the screen in person.

Pros

  • OLED display frequently described as jaw-dropping — 2880x1800 resolution at 120Hz with deep blacks and vivid color that users say makes it impossible to go back to IPS panels
  • Build quality surprises ex-MacBook and Surface users: all-metal chassis, smooth trackpad, and a solid keyboard that feels premium at its price point
  • Speaker system punches above its weight — downward-firing drivers sound best on a hard surface and can be boosted further via the DTS or Dolby apps
  • Port selection is generous for a thin ultrabook, including USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, and a bundled RJ45 dongle in the box
  • The i7 integrated-graphics model (VA variant) gets noticeably better battery life than the i9/RTX 3050 variant — some users report 8–12 hours on light tasks like Excel and web browsing
  • Whisper mode dramatically reduces fan noise for everyday productivity work with minimal real-world performance impact

Cons

  • Battery life on the i9 + RTX 3050 variant is genuinely poor — multiple users report 2.5–3.5 hours on real-world tasks even at reduced brightness and whisper mode, well below the 10+ hour marketing claim
  • Touchscreen OLED model has a visible screen door effect (SDE) from the digitizer layer — noticeable on white backgrounds within 1–1.5 feet, enough that several buyers returned the unit
  • The 13th gen Intel CPUs are power-hungry and throttle heavily under sustained load — reviewers and users note that even the M2 MacBook Air can keep up in everyday tasks with far better efficiency
  • Sporadic BIOS and firmware bugs reported across units: random 5-second freezes, black screen on boot, and coil whine on the UM3504 (AMD) variant have shown up in multiple threads
  • OLED burn-in risk is a low-level concern — using dark mode and ASUS pixel-shift features is recommended, and the reflective panel annoys users who prefer IPS for bright environments
  • Bluetooth signal strength is reportedly weaker than average — one user confirmed audio dropouts just a few meters away, an issue that didn't occur with other devices

That Screen Door Effect Is Real — But It Depends on Your Model

The touchscreen OLED variant splits buyers down the middle. Some return it immediately after seeing grain on white backgrounds; others say it's only visible when you're practically nose-to-screen. The non-touch VA model avoids the issue entirely, making it the safer pick if display purity matters to you.

Great Laptop, Wrong CPU Choice

The i9-13900H and RTX 3050 combo looks impressive on a spec sheet but delivers disappointing real-world battery life — sometimes under 3 hours. Users who picked the i7 or AMD variants get dramatically better endurance, suggesting ASUS overestimated how well Intel's 13th gen handles thin-and-light constraints.

MacBook Converts Are Becoming Zenbook's Biggest Fans

Several users who switched from multiple MacBooks or Surface Pros call the Zenbook 14X their best laptop purchase. The value-per-dollar ratio at sale prices (often $700–$900 open box) makes it a compelling case for Windows users who want OLED quality without paying Apple's premium.

The screen. They say that you don't go back after seeing OLED.

I've come from a very long line of MacBooks, Microsoft Surface laptops and never thought I'd see the day I'd buy something other than those but I am genuinely blown away by the quality and value of my Asus Zenbook. The OLED display and excellent quality trackpad and keyboard along with a metal enclosure and good build quality make me very happy

I think the screen is really nice. I haven't noticed any SDE, but when I get home I could have a closer look to see if it is more noticeable when looking for it.

I would join the team that says Don't Buy this laptop... I had it for a little over a month and I'm stuck with it on a black screen when I turn it on, and the firmware not working even though the flashing tool finishes successfully. Should have trusted my gut feeling when I first took it out of the box and it had the 'Bios not found' message... Right out of a sealed box!

Bought it, got it with extreme coil whine, half of the touchscreen not working and bulging touchpad. Sent it to repair, got back with only repaired touchscreen, quickly sent it back again. This time they actually fixed the touchpad but only after phonecall and replaced the motherboard, but only after telling me they can't guarantee that coil whine will be gone. Luckily it is much better, even tho you can still notice it in a quiet room.

You can use the DTS app to tweak audio. It's helpful.

This laptop unfortunately throttles heavily especially if you get the i9 version. For a laptop at 3.5lbs, I'd take the 17" LG Gram 2023 with RTX 3050 over this (and it's lighter at 3.2lbs). The screen on the LG isn't OLED but it's still amazing and it's huge. Much more immersive than the Asus 14X. Even the M2 MacBook Air would keep up with the Zenbook 14X for performance, plus it's fanless and has a better keyboard and the best trackpad in the business. And this is coming from a HUGE Asus fan.

I got mine about a month and a half ago and I absolutely love it. I have the i9 and RTX 3050 version and it's got more than enough power for what I do with it. Also, the screen is amazing and I don't see any sde. Battery life is also surprisingly good.

I do wish they made them a little bigger to improve the cooling solution. Great for streaming from a desktop. Set it to whisper mode. Great screen, keyboard and trackpad. Great ports and fast WiFi.

The 2023 Zenbook 14x was designed to be used in whisper mode when battery life is your main priority, which does limit its performance. I find my Zenbook 14x works fine in this mode; I don't notice the performance hit. Lowering your screen brightness will also increase your battery life. I tend to use brightness levels between 60-80% which is what I find the most comfortable. The problem is the 13th gen Intel CPU; it's very power hungry.

I'm having issues with wireless signals. Particularly for Bluetooth it has a weaker signal and I cannot go a few meters away from the laptop without having Bluetooth audio issues. This is only happening with this laptop. When I used the same Bluetooth earphone with my mobile phone it does not have such connectivity issues.

I bought it! Really loving it so far. There's no screen door effect (at least none that I noticed). There's no pen that comes with this laptop but it does come with a nice sleeve and a RJ45 to USB-A dongle, and it supports MPP so any MPP pen will work fine.

dolby app customize bro. surround sound virtualizer and volume leveler on. Best speakers I've ever used coming from like 7 macbooks myself in the last 10 years. Apple can't touch this speaker system.

I have the i7 variant and to my knowledge it doesn't get hot unless I'm using some heavy apps at the same time (Usually chrome with 10 tabs, Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator). It's cooler compared to a lot of the laptops. It's been 3 months since I got the laptop and there's no issues with OLED burn in, Asus themselves have features to prevent this like pixel shift.

I'm having trouble deciding if I should get one of the AMD zen books since the AMD chips generally are a bit less power hungry.

I bought it. I wrote a review on Bestbuy. Don't buy it. The screendoor effect is super noticeable and makes the screen look like crap. TBH I loved everything else about the notebook, but I returned it. Go to a bestbuy and take a look at their touchscreen oled displays. It's pretty gross.

This is completely normal. It's just physics... you have a 70Wh battery in the thin chassis that the Zenbook offers. With finely tuned settings — whisper mode, best power efficiency, using integrated graphics, 50% brightness — the power drainage is ~20W per hour, which should theoretically give you about 3.5 hours.

I got the 14x oled from the bestbuy sale last month. Great all around. But I have a few nitpicks: downward firing speakers sound great when on a desk, sound muffled & lack treble when on the lap. Battery life could be better even on the whisper fan mode with general tasking. Wish it was a 2 in 1.

Glad I'm not the only one. Too bad, this Zenbook is almost perfect for me but the SDE is really bothering me. I think I am also returning it.

Best speakers I've ever heard. Super loud and crystal clear. Plus a volume booster setting which makes them boom. Super weird and cool effect if you have the laptop on your lap the sound goes directly to your ears.

I bought a Zenbook 14x OLED, 16GB/1TB, RTX 3050 (4GB VRAM) a week ago. So far great experience. Great alternative for programmers who are seeking performance and portability.

Look at a white screen/white background for a while and then come back. The screen door effect from the touch screen is my biggest gripe.

I bought it a month and a half ago and was generally satisfied until three days ago when I noticed blue spots on the screen, which are increasing every day, and now almost half of the screen is not visible because of them. The laptop hasn't been subjected to any mechanical damage, I didn't spill water or anything like that on it. I simply finished work in the evening, turned off the laptop, and when I turned it on in the morning, I saw these blue spots.

Especially when open box deals can be had near $500 at BB in practically new condition. But even the common $700 sales are unbeatable IMO.

I think you should go for it! The only issue that my laptop has given me is its YouTube performance. It throttles a lot whenever I'm on the website for some reason. Apparently, it's a pretty documented issue.

I just bought mine 2.5 weeks ago, it was an open box at a good price for the specs. I have the best chip i9, with 32 gigs of ram, 1 tb ssd, 3050 gpu. I've noticed that the battery life is kinda terrible for the price point.

SDE is bothering me a lot it's noticeable when viewing a white background. I don't know whether the SDE is a side effect of having a touch screen.

It's been a month since I bought this Zenbook laptop, one day when I powered it up, the keyboard light was on and the fan was working but no display! Nothing, after a minute the fan speed went to the maximum like a helicopter, still no display. I held down the power button and it went off, after a few turning on and off it eventually came back up. It happened 3 times in this time, I am getting worried.

The battery life is alright. I have my laptop setup for pure performance. Knowing that I can watch a 2 hour movie full brightness and whisper mode it'll be at 35% after. The i9 is super fast, so changing every setting for more battery wouldn't be a problem.

One of the big selling points of this laptop is the OLED display, and it truly looks terrible and grainy with the touchscreen. Keep in mind that OLED is a tradeoff, better colour, usually brighter, faster response times, but you are trading off battery life as well as life expectancy. I returned the laptop because the screen didn't even look good.
