Summary

The Dell G15 (2022) is a budget-oriented gaming laptop that generates genuinely mixed reactions on Reddit — loved for its aggressive pricing and solid specs-per-dollar, but criticized for thermal management and build quality concerns. Users who get it at a discount tend to come away satisfied, while those comparing it against alternatives in the same price bracket often feel there are better options. It appeals most to first-time PC gamers or users in regions with limited selection, where the G15 frequently ends up being the most competitive value play available. Multiple BIOS updates have resolved some early software bugs, though hardware-level thermal limitations remain a persistent complaint.

Pros

  • Aggressive price-to-specs ratio — frequently available with RTX 3060/3070Ti configs for less than comparable competitors, making it the go-to choice in markets with limited laptop availability
  • Strong CPU options including i7-12700H and Ryzen 6800H deliver real multi-core performance for gaming, programming, and virtualization workloads
  • Battery life on the Ryzen 6800H variants is a standout, with users reporting 8+ hours of mixed use and strong efficiency outside of demanding workloads
  • MUX switch and Advanced Optimus support on Special Edition models enables direct GPU output for competitive gaming and reduced frame latency
  • BIOS updates resolved most of the early launch bugs (screen flickering, slow boot, blue screens), making current units more stable than reviews from launch suggest
  • Upgradeable RAM slots allow users to jump to 32GB+ for demanding workloads like VMs or 3D rendering after purchase

Cons

  • CPU thermals regularly hit 95–100°C under sustained load — a well-documented issue across Intel and Ryzen variants that throttles performance in long gaming sessions
  • Serviceability is a real pain point: accessing the heatsink for repasting requires near-complete disassembly, including removing the motherboard — a major deterrent for DIY maintenance
  • Single functional M.2 slot on most configurations (second slot either missing the connector or occupied by Wi-Fi card), limiting future storage expansion options
  • Display on base models tops out at 120Hz/1080p with poor color accuracy — users wanting the 165Hz or QHD panels have to pay significantly more or hunt for specific configurations
  • Alienware Command Center software is widely panned as buggy and unreliable, adding friction to basic fan curve and performance mode management
  • Battery life tanks to under 2 hours under gaming load, and unplugged performance drops noticeably — not unusual for gaming laptops but worth noting given the otherwise good idle battery

Does a BIOS Update Actually Fix the Dell G15?

Early buyers hit a wall of flickering screens, slow boots, and BSODs — but Reddit owners confirm that Dell's post-launch BIOS patches resolved most of the software-side chaos. The thermal ceiling is still real, but the G15 of today is meaningfully more stable than the one reviewers tested at launch.

Good Laptop, Wrong Market — Unless You're Stuck With It

Reddit's verdict is blunt: if you can afford a Legion 5 or Zephyrus G15, get that instead. But in regions where neither is available or the price gap is substantial, the G15 fills a genuine role as the most capable budget gaming laptop in the room.

The Ryzen 6800H Version Is a Different Beast for Battery Life

While the Intel variants draw heat for thermals and power draw, owners of the Ryzen 6800H configuration specifically call out exceptional battery efficiency — one user reported an estimated 8.5 hours during casual use. For buyers prioritizing unplugged endurance, this config changes the value equation.

Despite the newer specs on the Dell, the Zephyrus G15 is a much better and more premium laptop.

Watch the Jarrod's Tech review of it on YT. He had a fair share of issues.

The RGB keyboard limitations are a bummer, as it probably doesn't cost much more to slap the better keyboard in. Regarding the 3050 and 4GB of RAM — the 3050 is a budget card and while it can theoretically make use of higher ram for textures, it probably doesn't need it, as you're likely to be running games at medium to high quality settings in order to achieve higher framerates anyway.

Thermals will be very bad cpu will hit 100c. Just like last year's model so it's expected. If you want good thermal check out legion 5

You will have to spend $50-70 on ram anyway with dell. So the difference is not $200. Also RTX 4050 is not that good. So I would go for zephyrus if my budget allows. Also zephyrus will have better screen, speakers, KB, mousepad since its more of a productivity laptop.

Yes, it has better screen, better built quality and you will get slightly better performance in games.

I saw dell SE in showroom and it looks too chuncky. Also the screen wasn't so good in person, may be just me.

As a g15 2020 user I will not be getting a g15 2022, waaaaaaay too hot, very low lasting power. Mine is deciding that it wants to turn on on its own schedule. If you want a gaming laptop, you need one with blower fans so go with the impossible to find ASUS brands or even maybe a lower end Alienware, but Alienware is still dell and they've lost me over the past 2 years with poor device support and not honoring the terms of service in their warranty. Mine is essentially living in an iron lung

I have the 120Hz screen and it's fine for most casual tasks. Unless you need the best color reproduction and max frames for graphic design/content creator or visuals for gaming, it's sufficient. Like I said, you can always plug in a better external monitor via HDMI. Some people just nitpick the hardware, forgetting that you get what you pay for (Dell has to cut corners somewhere for the G15's price point).

I used it for machine learning for a brief period and it would constantly crash during training models. Also performing sorting algorithms for an algorithms project it would also overheat and BSOD. No, unless they made their quality SIGNIFICANTLY better, I would never recommend a dell for anything.

I think its up to you, I've actually had an older dell g15 2019 which treated me well besides the battery life. I have the same model with the r9 6900hs and I'd say its one of the better dedicated GPU laptops I've had. The only main issue I would say is that the 3060's time is running out for running games at its 1440p screen resolution.

Worst thing about the g15 se is not the bsod that can be fixed but serviceability. You literally need to almost disassemble the entire laptop to get to heatsink for repaste.

I installed windows 10. Windows 11 just had too many bugs. Something with the Ryzen CPU.

Looks like a solid deal. I would have personally opted for a better screen 300 nits or above option. However, I understand it makes the price jump up to ~1200+ with that option.

Screen flickering is from people who never update their computers, there was a bios update like 3 weeks after it came out, throttling/performance is fine if you use the actual performance settings in the Alienware application and set up the bios properly. Fan noise is fine, that dude doesn't have it setup right or he disabled Optimus for better gaming performance but didn't understand that using the dedicated GPU all the time means more heat which means the fans have to work.

I ended picking up the g15 5521 special edition for $1400 cash yesterday. 3070 ti, i7 12th, 1 Tb, 1440p at 240 Htz. It's one hell of a laptop I will say though.

I've got the 3070 variant of the Asus, and the laptop is a gem in all aspects for me, it is very snappy and the Pantone screen (although bit of a gimmick) is absolutely gorgeous.

Will avoid the G15 line. It has bad cooling, heavy but flexing chassis and difficult to service because you need to take out the whole motherboard to get access to the CPU/ GPU heatsink. Asus TUF line has decent laptops

I have that laptop, i used it for a year so far and it's great to be honest, i had just one small issue i had a thin purple horizontall line in the screen than it dissapeared, i would say its great because of its price, if you look for something better you need an extra 500$ to get something that is not that much different

I have a G15 but in Intel flavor (i5-11800H + RTX 3050). I've stress-tested it and the chassis does heat up but it's not terrible (fan noise is also tolerable). You can mitigate this by getting a laptop cooling fan for better ventilation and elevate the screen to ergonomic eye level.

Please dont. Even if you end up with a model that isn't that bad at first, my Dell G15 from 2020 is a literal brick from over heating, starting from the begining of this year. It heats so much the SSD wont load the OS properly, not to mention even when I got it, it would Blue Screen of Death after playing 10 minutes of COD. I went through 3 devices through dell support.

Got mine yesterday. Does run quite hot. was playing FIFA 22 on unlimited frames and the CPU was hovering at 85c in 24c ambient before I activated G mode then the fans ramp up and got cooler. Battery life seems good. Fan is a bit noisy but is comparable to my previous gaming laptops.

My backlight issue expanded to not turning on at all on start up where only opening ACC will it turn on or can use the G mode. I reset the machine which seemed to resolve it but as soon as I updated to 1.4.3 bios the issue has returned. Not sure if there is some relation but ACC and bios 1.4.3 don't work well together on my machine.

Have it here at work. Its pretty good, performance is good etc. It does have an issue sometimes where turning it on is slow for the bios screen to come up, besides that, seems like a good laptop. Battery life is about 3-4 hours on the included battery for the ryzen 7 version with the 3050 ti. EDIT: Now have multiple issues with units turning on, and dell released an update fixing the slow bios boot. So I would stay away from this model.

I have Dell G15, and I've had the chance to use my friend's Zephyrus G15. I would definitely recommend the Zephyrus over Dell. One thing I hate about Dell is battery management. It's so iffy. One day it will last 6 hours (gaming + browsing time) and the other it will only last less than 2 hours (same amount of computing). My friend has not had this problem at all. The screen and audio quality is also better on the Zephyrus imo.

I had the dell g15. It's a very good laptop. But i have to say the zephyrus is more premium, better battery management better portability...i'd go for asus.

Seen review of multiple people, ultimate conclusion: this model of dell sucks, and Alienware command center sucks even more. Definitely not buying this shit and having mental torture, better to buy last year's AMD legion

The highest temp I've seen is 93 degrees Celsius when playing AAA games. If you are worried about temperatures from a video you saw don't worry since there is a BIOS update that fixes most of these issues.

I've taken great care of it. It's a good laptop. I do sometimes get random bitlocker lock ups and I have to open it up and dust it off every couple of months. Also, at the start, the laptop used to randomly stop the graphics card from running so I would have to install drivers from the official dell website. It doesn't do that anymore, for whatever reason. All easy fixes. I always leave it plugged in because as soon as I plug it out, it dies within an hour or 1:30 max (even on energy saver).

I bought this model Dell G15 5515 Ryzen Edition and after much ado with bitlocker win11 and other issues. Pros: Good cpu AMD Ryzen 7 6800H, boot speed is ok, gaming also ok. Cons: not enough ram at 16g 70% used by sys, internal battery bad design choice by dell it can be replaced, but its a hassle. not enough external ports. Ordered this with win 10 came with win 11 unstable. 512 gig HD inadequate for the price.

So, I bought the G15 5520 with I7 processor, 64Gb Ram, and the 2280 2TB NVMe SSD. Upon looking at the internals I noticed 2 M.2 slots. 1 with my 2280 SSD and 1 apparently has my Killer Wi-Fi card in it. After speaking to Dell themselves I learned you can only use the first slot for the SSD.

I have a 2021 G15; they didn't promote the 2nd m.2 slot last year either. But it works fine. Had to buy the little mounting bracket on ebay/amazon because they didn't supply one.

I like the Ryzen 7. It's been running really smooth for me. I been using multiple virtualization devices running on their own instances while doing some light gaming on the side. AMD has come a really long way.

Gone with Asus tuf f15 with 1440p display, its good laptop bythway. Added one nvme ssd (in second slot) and running Ubuntu linux + Windows (in first nvme slot). But be aware 1440p display is not good for media consumption. For thermals, its not that good, its catching 90°c quickly.

I recently bought a Dell G15 5525 as well. When you first booted it up did it take a while for the screen to turn on? Mine had this issue from the box and eventually the screen just stopped working entirely. I must have gotten a bad batch laptop.

Nah, I wouldn't pay 1.5L for a 1080p laptop! The G15 is a great laptop, yeah it has a few bugs/short comings but this Asus ain't it chief.
