Summary

The Dell Inspiron 16 2-in-1 (2023) is a mixed bag that divides Reddit pretty sharply. Owners who got it at a discount — especially open box or on sale — tend to be satisfied, while those paying full retail price often feel burned by its plastic build and value proposition. The laptop's large 16-inch form factor, solid display options (including QHD+ Mini-LED on the 7640), and convertible functionality make it genuinely useful for students and light creators, but recurring complaints about the touchpad, thermal management, and build quality are hard to ignore. It's positioned as a budget-friendly 2-in-1, and Reddit's consensus is that it largely delivers at that price — just not much more.

Pros

  • The QHD+ Mini-LED display on the 7640 model is consistently praised as a standout feature for a laptop in this price range, offering vibrant visuals for content consumption and productivity
  • Intel Core Ultra 7 155H and Core Ultra 5 configurations handle everyday workloads well — Zoom, Chrome, Office, light photo editing, and even casual gaming in titles like Minecraft and Valorant run without issues
  • The 2-in-1 hinge and tablet mode are reported as sturdy and functional on the 7640, with the pen and touch screen being highlights for note-taking and creative use
  • Excellent value at discounted prices — users picking it up open box or on sale for $440–$640 consistently report satisfaction, calling it worth every dollar at those price points
  • 32GB RAM configurations give the laptop meaningful headroom for multitasking, and some variants include dual SSD slots (one 2230, one 2280) allowing easy storage upgrades

Cons

  • Build quality is the most consistent complaint — the chassis is described as plasticky and prone to flex, with one user calling it 'a circuit board stuffed inside a tinfoil shell'; dents and scuffs appear with normal use
  • The touchpad has a known design flaw across multiple generations (7610, 7620, 7630) — freezing issues persist even after Dell repair center replacements, and the problem has followed the line for years
  • RAM is soldered on most configurations, meaning there's no upgrade path; buying the 16GB model is a long-term commitment, and Reddit strongly advises holding out for 32GB if longevity matters
  • Thermals and fan noise are a real issue under load — users report loud fans, fast heat buildup, and battery life dropping to under 3 hours in some real-world usage patterns
  • At full MSRP ($1,099–$1,499), Reddit consensus is that better alternatives exist — the Dell Latitude 5000 series, XPS 15, and Lenovo ThinkPad/Yoga lines are repeatedly recommended over the Inspiron for anyone who can stretch their budget
  • HDMI output is limited to version 1.4, which restricts external display bandwidth; users needing high-refresh or 4K monitors must route through Thunderbolt instead

Buy It on Sale or Don't Buy It at All

Reddit users who paid $440–$650 open box or discounted love this laptop. Those who paid anywhere near MSRP feel shortchanged. The Inspiron 16 2-in-1's value is entirely dependent on what you actually paid for it.

The Touchpad Problem That Won't Go Away

Across the 7610, 7620, 7630, and now 7640, Reddit users keep flagging the same touchpad freezing issue. Dell has replaced units at repair centers without fixing it. For a feature that defines daily usability, this is a years-long unresolved flaw.

Surprisingly Capable for Content Creation

While gamers and power users are routinely disappointed, content creators using Photoshop, Audition, and Premiere Pro report smooth performance. The large 16-inch display and solid CPU make it a legitimate creative tool if your workload doesn't push the GPU.

Latitude: good (but boring). Inspiron: not good.

This is super compelling. In what world would I ever get an XPS without USB ports? No numpad works for me and is preferred to centre the touchpad. My 9560 is about to bite the dust so I'll likely grab one of these.

I don't get why people don't recommend Dell. I think it has good screen size, reliable performance, and great for Zoom and content watching.

The only thing I would do if you were to get it from Dell is upgrade from FHD to QHD. If it's for work, doing spreadsheets and having as much screen as possible is a priority for me at least, especially when you have multi-windows open.

I wouldn't buy a machine with 16GB soldered. 16GB is fine for general use right now, and if it takes SoDIMM you can upgrade later. I also wouldn't buy Inspiron. Latitude 5000/Dell Pro Plus would be the lowest line I'd consider from Dell — the Latitude 3000, Vostro and Inspiron quality has all been too bad over the past few years.

It says the RAM is soldered unfortunately so no way to swap it out.

You're beating up the laptop pretty badly. I have plastic chassis laptops from 2011 that don't have nearly the same amount of damage. Laptops should be transported in a sleeve at the very least, in the same manner that your phone likely has a case.

This Inspiron will not do great on anything more than light gaming.

GPU is on par with Vega 7 / Vega 8. Can you find anything around the same price with a Radeon 680m or higher? Look for a Ryzen 7 CPU.

I just bought a refurbished Inspiron 7630 2-in-1. Not had it long but hinge seems really sturdy, little stiff but that's a good thing IMO. Screen is gorgeous, laptop seems really responsive my only complaint is the keyboard. I've been using an MSI steel series keyboard for 5 years and it's taking some getting used to the soft rubber keys.

I'd never buy an Inspiron laptop again. I bought two, one for myself and one for my daughter years ago. They're junk and cheaply made. Hinge issues are common with Inspirons. I currently own a Latitude 5540. Reason being is because I've worked with Dell's business line of computers and they're rock solid.

Seems to vary from person to person. I have an Inspiron that's 18 years old and still works like new. However their quality could have gone downhill since then. Most of my newer Dells are XPS.

One of our supervisors is using the previous model i7. Big battery, great touch screen and Pen. Build quality feels better than expected for an Inspiron too. We would buy another. I reckon go for it. Only caveat is HDMI output is 1.4 only, if external big screen matters to you.

I think it's good now at $1099 at Best Buy but the main issue is the weight at 2.2kg.

I have this laptop and it randomly turns off 3 times a day. I just hold the power button for a good 30 seconds and it restarts but it's so annoying. Like when I'm playing games or something midway the screen freezes for a couple of seconds, then the screen goes black but the fan is still running. According to Google overheating or SSD or BIOS is the issue.

Terrible computer, currently working with Dell to get a refund. They quietly scrapped this model due to graphics card issues.

Have had mine for a while and haven't had a single issue. I have the 16GB variant and I have never had any lag, and I play games such as BeamNG.drive, stream PS and PC Gamepass with no problem. The 32GB should handle whatever you throw at it within reason. If you don't like big laptops then this might be an issue for you. But I believe that bulky size is offset by how strong and sturdy it is.

This is my 7th Dell PC and all with no problems. This 7640 2-in-1 with 32GB is working as I expected. All software is running well and a lot of time the PC is working outside for monitoring; no issues so far and currently satisfied.

16GB should be fine for the near term but might not be enough 3-5 years down the road. Having said that, the Inspiron line is an entry level consumer line that isn't designed to last longer than maybe 3 years anyway, so in 3 years you'll likely need to replace it anyways.

Price out 64GB of RAM for that laptop. It might even be cheaper to get the 16 and replace with 64 after. Always get more RAM than you think you need.

Get the 7640 plus Nvidia 4060 model. Almost always on sale. Has two SSD slots (one 2230, one 2280). I put 64GB of RAM in mine.

The performance is slightly less than what I expected out of a $1500 laptop, but is definitely worth the $440 I paid. I'd even say it's worth up to $600, but due to the GPU I wouldn't go higher than that.

Laptops are almost always a notch or two below desktop counterparts mainly because of the power and thermal limits. Try changing the power plan to performance and, in case it was not when you ran the tests, plug it in.

Same chassis as last year but with a 95 watt GPU. Actually un-ironically not a bad idea. Currently have the 16 Plus 7620, and I feel like the 3060 is being held back by its 65 watt configuration. There's a bit of thermal headroom, since the GPU stays at around 65-70 degrees celsius.

The deck flex is sort of indicative of overall build quality priorities. I have a new Omnibook currently, and while there are ample software issues, this thing is built so well. It's almost Macbook-levels of good. If I felt a $1000 laptop flex as much as they're describing I'd be concerned and probably go for something else.

I'd recommend a Latitude over an Inspiron, if you're getting a Dell. All things considered, though, I'd recommend a Lenovo ThinkPad over either Dell product.

My touchpad freezes and it's a construction flaw. The touchpad has been replaced at the Dell repair center and it didn't help.

It's super loud and heats up quickly. Battery barely lasts 3 hours. Mine is less than a year old and is already acting up even though I only use it for school, movies, and sometimes Roblox.

I had an Inspiron 7620 running Linux and it was full of problems. The trackpad went bonkers after a few weeks and I needed to solder a new grounding wire to fix it due to a long-standing design flaw. Sometimes the keys would repeat after a single press. They used substandard glue on the rubber feet, all of which came off. I replaced them with layers of Gorilla tape.

My wife has an Inspiron 16 Plus 7620. She's a writer, so it gets flogged. She uses it at least 8 hours every single day since she got it 2-ish years ago. She plays The Sims 4 on it as well as writing. It hasn't missed a single beat in the year or two she's had it. It's been a fantastic laptop, despite this sub telling everyone to avoid Inspirons.

I used an Inspiron once and it lasted me 4 years although the whole time it had a motherboard problem. However, I never had a problem with Latitude, Precision, etc.

I have my Inspiron 15 for 4 years now. The only issue for me is that every time I open the laptop after putting it to sleep, sometimes the screen won't turn on. So I have to close and open it again for like 3-4 times, then the Dell logo shows up. Been having that problem since my 2nd year of having it. Other than that, it still works pretty good.
