Summary

The HP ENVY x360 15 (2023) is a 2-in-1 convertible laptop aimed at students, professionals, and light creatives who want touchscreen versatility without paying premium prices. Reddit sentiment is predominantly negative, with hardware reliability — particularly hinge failure, thermal throttling, and battery life well under 3 hours — being the most repeated complaints across multiple threads. A smaller subset of users report years of trouble-free use, typically those who keep it plugged in and treat it carefully. The consensus is that the laptop looks great on paper but carries a real reliability gamble, especially for anyone who needs it to survive daily commutes or convert frequently between laptop and tablet mode.

Pros

  • Solid performance for everyday tasks — users running Adobe Creative Suite, light gaming (Roblox, Minecraft, Sims), and productivity software like Excel and Word report smooth day-to-day use
  • Competitive pricing with frequent 30–50% discounts off MSRP, making it one of the more affordable 2-in-1s with dedicated GPU options (RTX 3050)
  • Dual Thunderbolt ports on select configurations add versatility for power users who need fast data transfer or eGPU support
  • USB-C charging support means you're not stranded without the proprietary cable — phone chargers work in a pinch
  • AMD Ryzen variants (especially Ryzen 7 5825U and Ryzen 7 8840HS) earn praise for being responsive and fan-quiet under moderate workloads
  • Touchscreen and convertible form factor genuinely useful for media consumption, light tablet use, and users who occasionally need to flip the screen

Cons

  • Hinge failure is the defining reliability complaint — multiple users report breaks within 4–18 months of normal use, with HP repair quotes often exceeding $150+ per incident
  • Real-world battery life frequently falls below 2 hours under moderate use, far short of the advertised figures — lawyers, students, and travelers consistently get caught short
  • Thermal management is poor: the chassis runs dangerously hot under sustained load, with some users reporting random shutdowns and one describing a burning smell from day one
  • Rubber feet detach over time due to heat, and HP charges around $150 for official replacements — a parts failure that makes the laptop unusable on flat surfaces
  • Wi-Fi reliability is a recurring issue across generations, with Realtek network cards dropping connectivity entirely and requiring multiple hard resets to restore
  • RAM is soldered on 13th-gen models, capping upgradability at 16GB — a step back from the 12th-gen (15ew) which supported DIMM slots for up to 32GB

The Hinge That Breaks the Deal

Across dozens of Reddit threads, the HP ENVY x360's 360-degree hinge is cited as the single biggest reason users regret their purchase. Some break within months of normal use, and HP's repair costs often rival a budget replacement laptop.

Good Specs, Unreliable Execution

On paper, the ENVY x360 15 offers competitive AMD or Intel options at aggressive price points — but Reddit's long-term owners reveal a pattern of cascading hardware failures that erode the value proposition quickly.

Who Actually Loves It? The Plugged-In Crowd

Users who keep their ENVY x360 docked at a desk, rarely convert it to tablet mode, and handle it gently tend to report years of solid performance. The problems cluster around portability — exactly the use case the design targets.

Honestly I can't recommend this device. Not only hinges are a problem, but also the rubber feet fall off with time. HP charges you $150 for one official rubber feet replacement. Additionally this device is unusable without this part, it gets really hot quickly, and eventually shuts down itself. I had to return my model.

HP makes both some of the best and some of the worst laptops in the industry. Envy is one of their better ones, although their x360 models tend to develop hinge issues over time. Just treat it well and it should last a good long while.

I have the 16 inch Ryzen 7 8840HS version and totally love it. I always preferred AMD so I'm biased.

I have HP Envy x360 15 with Ryzen 7 5825U. Battery life isn't as strong as I'd like but it still gets me through a day of light to medium use. I also never had problems with performance, everything is snappy and quick. It supports USB C charging so I can charge it using my phone charger. Fan noise is also good for me, I never hear the fans spin unless I'm doing heavy tasks.

Envy x360 gave laptop hinges by HP a bad name. Spend it elsewhere.

I've been using one for work for a year and a half or so, no problems at all. I'm not sure what context people find issues with the hinges. I wouldn't say I'm careful with it, but I don't throw it around or pick it up by its screen, which might be relevant.

Have had mine since 2019 and not a single issue.

HP sometimes gets a bad rap because of their lower end PCs, but they're no worse or better than PCs from other manufacturers. HP has a large market share, so you disproportionately hear about more problems. HP Envy laptops are nice, especially if you got a good deal on one. They're not better or worse than similar laptops from other manufacturers.

Avoid all 2-in-1 laptops -- they're overpriced gimmicks that break way too easily, usually in a way that requires the entire LCD assembly to be replaced. Get a ProBook, EliteBook, or ZBook instead.

The laptop looks really good, good price for its peers and is light. If you are a very meticulous person it would last a while. My HP Envy x360 gets hot and then shuts down at seemingly random intervals. So test the laptop extensively once it arrives. The frame is weak, get yourself a hard case. Be aware that the laptop is probably not going to last you a long time. I would recommend looking at another option.

It's horrible! I bought mine several years ago for around $600. Hinges are a HUGE issue -- seriously it should be a class action lawsuit. I don't even use the tablet function and my hinges keep breaking. I had it repaired twice and it broke again! I can't even open my laptop all the way or it'll completely crack my screen.

Bought brand new for 1300 euros in October 2021 for university. Within 4-5 months, the hinge broke despite using it as intended. Repairs were as expensive as a new laptop, so I had to use it as a desktop. Now in my 7th semester the rubber feet fell off -- terrible build quality. Performance was fine, but durability ruined the experience. Switched to a MacBook Air M4.

I have the HP Envy x360, and the battery is awful. I can't use it unless it's plugged in. I'm over it.

The M1 will be better for you. Even if it's a few years old, the build quality will be at least several billion percent better than the HP's garbage plastic, and will overall last longer. I've owned several HP laptops, low and high end. All trash.

Having a PC from Hell experience with i7 2023 Envy x360 15.5. 2 identical PCs are losing Wi-Fi every other day or so. Not just disconnects -- totally random loss of all functionality as in wireless module is not installed. Requires 2-3 hard reset attempts to bring wifi back. HP support is useless. Even their HP Cloud Recovery Tool does not work.

I've had mine since January 2023 and I keep it in a sleeve then a case inside my briefcase. The hinges are fine and the rubber feet are also fine. I chose it over an iPad Pro because of Google Drive and Microsoft Office. I can play light games on it like Hearthstone.

I had one for 9 months but after the 5th or 6th month it became really slow, a hinge fell off, and it can barely run Chrome. Please don't buy -- buy an LG or Mac instead.

I've had one 18 months for school and never had any of the problems others have mentioned.

In 2 years, repaired twice -- for powering off and not turning on with no light signal when plugging in the power cord. It cost me $400 to repair. Now right after the repair less than 2 months later, the wifi connection got a problem. Makes me strongly disappointed with HP.

I've had mine for like 3 years and it's still super super nice and kicking just fine. I use mine for college and Roblox, sometimes the Sims. It works well for gaming and school purposes. I usually just have mine plugged in at my desk so I don't know much about the battery life, but it's a really nice laptop.

I own an HP Envy x360 with the Ryzen 4500U, and yes performance is low compared to other laptops in the same price range. Even after so much fan noise, it heats a lot -- you can make your heater by using it while charging. If you open games, you can make an omelette on its back lid. Thermals are awful.

This laptop is really trash, I will never buy HP again in my life. It was overheating from the first day to the extent that the house was smelling burnt material. In only a year of rare use the screen back cover connections got destroyed for nothing so the screen is ready to get destroyed if I close the laptop. Performance is just mediocre. Complete trash.

I bought an ENVY 360 2-in-1 two years ago in a hurry for a new work assignment. I was prepared to spend more, but got this for about $700, which I found to be a great value, especially after two years of travel with it at my side. I absolutely love the Envy for my work usage and occasional movie on a flight or in hotels.

The only thing I can really agree on is battery life -- it is disappointing to have to plug it in if I want to use it over 3-4 hours. That being said I think the pros outweigh the cons. I have beat the ever-loving life out of this laptop, and it still performs like the day I got it. It has handled everything I've thrown at it while maintaining great performance.

I have used the HP Envy x360 for 2 years and it has been troubles upon troubles. It started with the speakers making a screech sound. Then some lines appeared on the screen with no touch. After using it that way for 3 months, the screen went totally off. The fan is so noisy and the case can be extremely hot which makes its use so uncomfortable.

My experience with the HP Envy for the past 4 years has been a 6/10. The fan is loud. For a while whenever I lifted the laptop while playing a video, the video would automatically stop. I got the one with touchscreen and screen rotating feature and the only time it was beneficial was playing Roblox. It is quite a hassle flipping the laptop into tablet mode. The pen feels weird on the screen.

I have found the ENVY to be an incredible machine. I purchased it for business (lecturing) and home (gaming) purposes. During this time I have had Lenovo, HP EliteBook, and 2 Surface Pros for my day job, all higher spec and more expensive machines, and this has outperformed all of them for my needs.

This has got to be up there in the worst laptops I have used. Every week it crashes and restarts for no reason. The webcam barely works -- I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver at least 5 times. The keyboard also glitches out occasionally and the only solution is to restart. It overheats. It cannot connect to my Bluetooth headphones.

I am in school for graphic design, and the Envy handles Adobe Creative Suite and larger files beautifully. I have been using it for design for over two years now. It never crashes. I personally love this computer.

These things are complete trash. I tried filing a warranty claim but while they had it the warranty expired, so they sent me a $25 coupon towards a new HP. I told them they could pay all but $25 and I still would never buy another HP computer in my life. Steer clear from anything made by HP.

I've had it for a little over a year, only used it for school work, Minecraft and Roblox. It overheats so much even though there is plenty of space for airflow. I haven't overworked it and I treat it well, yet it has shut down twice -- would not turn on for a few minutes. My Bose headphones and AirPods don't always connect either.

I've used the Ryzen 4700U in anger for about 4 years. I work in software, and my kids game on it. I've had ThinkPads, MacBook Pros and Dell XPS laptops for work, each of them had hardware failures -- swollen battery, broken keyboard, motherboard faults. My preference is Acer or HP for laptops, they're the only two that haven't had major failures for me. Hinges and battery life aside, it's been solid.

I love mine. What's not to enjoy about it? I've had no problems with my machine -- none. I removed Windows 11 immediately after unboxing and installed Pop!_OS. It's a nice mid-range device.

I got the AMOLED version and while it's super nice, I've had two software issues already. The WiFi was not connecting to anything, and then screen orientation was completely locked. Both required a factory reset to fix. It rubbed me the wrong way that I've only powered it a few times and already have issues.

I bought one for college 3 years ago, it has a ton of issues, but I don't regret buying it. It was my first laptop and I'm fine with some tinkering.

For almost a year, mine was totally fine. The first time it broke was on me -- I used to just throw it in my bag without a case, and the hinges got loose over time. Eventually the screen became hard to move and ended up cracking. I sent it to HP for repairs and it came back working perfectly, but less than a year later the same hinge issue happened again.

I bought it too, I'm disappointed. It keeps running out of processing power and the battery drains quickly. A modern computer that can't handle multiple browser pages, PDFs, Word and Excel documents simultaneously is lame. My 7-year-old HP EliteBook 830 runs better than this. The touchscreen was a gimmick -- I hardly use it and it just uses extra power and adds extra weight.

My Envy 360's speakers popped and made funny noises and went out in like 3 months of having it. My laptop also gets very hot despite having it set up with plenty of airflow. That said, my mom has the exact same model and hers works just fine and has worked fine for years.

I have the x360 2-in-1 and I like it a lot. The battery lasts a good bit before I need to charge it. I also have not had any hinge issues at all.

Bought it in March 2021. First hinge issue came around October 2023, costing around $120 to fix. Now it broke again in May 2025, costing $175. Small hinges are not really great -- the utility of 2-in-1 is amazing but the reliability of these hinges is a real problem.

I had it for a year and I got problems. The speakers next to the keyboard are fake. The pen requires cord charging. The plug is only on the right side. And performance is underwhelming for the price. It sucks -- don't buy this.

I have the 2019 version with AMD Ryzen 5 3500U. I used to play The Sims on it and do some light gaming, but since I built a PC I mostly use this laptop for homework and work. It works well for me. It charges fast, the battery lasts, and I haven't really had any issues.
