Summary

The HP Pavilion Aero 13 (2024) lands in a weird spot on Reddit — users genuinely love how light and portable it is, but a recurring chorus of complaints about build quality, battery life, and long-term durability tempers the enthusiasm. Running AMD Ryzen 8040-series chips (up to Ryzen 7 8840U), it handles everyday productivity, university work, and even light gaming surprisingly well for its size and weight. The consensus is that it's a solid value pick for people who prioritize portability above all else, but it's not a laptop you'd buy expecting it to hold up flawlessly for 4-5 years. HP's consumer-grade quality control and customer support frustrate a consistent number of users, and the 43Wh battery is the elephant in the room that most reviewers can't ignore.

Pros

  • Exceptionally lightweight at around 1kg — users consistently call it the best thing about the laptop, and it's a genuine differentiator for students and frequent travelers
  • AMD Ryzen 8040U series APUs perform well above expectations for the price bracket, handling office work, web browsing, light coding, and even casual gaming like Cyberpunk 2077 at playable framerates on low-medium settings
  • 1920x1200 IPS display with 100% sRGB and 400 nits on the 2024 model is genuinely good for this price range — color accuracy and brightness stand out as highlights
  • Runs cool and quiet under light-to-moderate loads; fan noise is minimal during everyday tasks, and the Radeon 680M/760M integrated graphics are power-efficient enough to keep thermals in check
  • Priced competitively for what it offers — many users picked it up for $500-$800 USD and felt it was a fair deal given the specs, especially during sales

Cons

  • 43Wh battery is genuinely small for a 2024 ultraportable — real-world battery life lands at 6-8 hours for most users, well below HP's marketing claims, and far behind competitors like the MacBook Air or Zenbook 14
  • Build quality complaints are widespread: paint wearing off, pressure marks permanently appearing on the screen from the keyboard, rubber feet peeling, and chassis flex after months of daily use
  • HP consumer support is rated poorly — multiple users report difficulty getting warranty claims processed, being charged for replacements, or being told damage was user fault for issues that were clearly manufacturing defects
  • Driver and software issues have plagued several users: Bluetooth disconnecting, Wi-Fi instability, display flickering, and buggy scrolling — often requiring manual driver hunting to resolve
  • No BIOS option to cap battery charge at 80%, soldered non-upgradeable RAM, and at least one reported case of motherboard failure linked to USB-C charging — a feature HP actively markets
  • At $800+, better-built alternatives exist — the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 offers more cores at a similar price, and the ASUS Zenbook 13-14 is frequently recommended as the smarter long-term buy

The Battery Is the Deal-Breaker Nobody Warned You About

The 43Wh cell is a real limitation that owners only fully feel after a few weeks. Reddit users report 6-7 hours of real-world use, which means you'll be hunting for outlets during a full school or work day — a frustrating tradeoff for a laptop marketed as the ultimate portable.

Great Value at Launch, Questionable at Year Two

Several long-term owners report paint chipping, screen pressure marks, and even a motherboard failure from USB-C charging — a feature HP advertises prominently. The Aero 13 can feel like a steal at first, but the durability issues that emerge over 18-24 months make it harder to recommend over better-built rivals at similar prices.

Surprisingly Capable for Casual Gaming on a Budget

Nobody buys the Aero 13 expecting to game on it, but Reddit users have been genuinely impressed. Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p low-medium settings, Ghost of Tsushima without stuttering, and Warhammer 3 on medium-high details — the Radeon 760M/680M consistently overdelivers for a thin-and-light at this price.

In balanced power profile, I see it draws 21-22W and sits at 73-75°c. In performance, it draws 27-29W and hovers around 82-83°c. I'm pretty satisfied by that. With a cooling pad, it's more than safe. Cyberpunk 2077 runs in 1080p low-mid graphics at 40-45 fps, which is in line with what I expected with this power draw.

Every consumer line is crap. Try older top class. X1 carbon, xps, elitebook. I have Lenovo Thinkpad T430s that is 12 years old and still going strong. I also have HP Elitebook x360 from 2017 that I use daily with 0 problems.

So, it lasted almost 12 hours of moderate browser usage. Drains about 5% overnight on sleep. On a 61W type C charger, it charged 50% while i ate dinner. Not amazing battery life, but I'd say it's good enough.

Build is very solid. I use a 13in macbook pro for work, so I'm comparing it to that. It's not as heavy, or as metal feeling as the macbook, but it has no flex in the keyboard section and feels solid. It has a lil wiggle in the screen, but the Mac has the same amount of screen wiggle as well. If you aren't trying to break your laptop, you'll be fine.

Great laptops providing you get a good one. Terrible HP quality control, had two arrive with faulty screens and a hinge problem.

This isn't entirely new nor is it exclusive for HP either, many companies have low end notebooks that are the absolute bare minimum while having business class notebooks that are proper notebooks. They do this because they understand that the average buyer isn't all that smart so they produce cheap garbage while still making the more demanding people happy and praise their good products.

I have had it for a year and half now, 5600u version. The wifi card issue was a nuisance for the first 6-8 months and then it disappeared. I like its balanced performance quite a bit, no freezes or stutters, doesn't get warm, decent port selection for the size, decent display. All day battery life for web surfing, excel, VMware etc. in my case. The webcam could be better, but otherwise its the budget macbook air in my opinion.

28w is the rated TDP of 7735u. Manufacturer can set a lower TDP to suit different laptop designs. Aero 13 is a thin and light laptop so I doubt HP will set the default TDP to 28w in this machine.

Got the Ryzen 5 version, as it was all I could afford, and for my usual tasks it works perfectly. I had some issues with the drivers and updates that have all been resolved. With the latest BIOS update, and all of the Windows updates, the computer works just fine and battery life is around 7-8 hours, writing, browsing internet and listening to music on Spotify. It's very lightweight, construction doesn't feel cheap, keyboard is OK, trackpad took me a while to get used to, but now I use it a lot.

Got the one with Ryzen 7 7735u, its a great notebook. super light weight which makes it easy to carry and to use it everywhere, quality of the case and material feels decent, keyboard is a lil noisy but not too bad. using it as a work notebook but also to play games such as warhammer 3 total war on medium to high details. Would definitely recommend the 7735u since it comes with radeon 680m vs the 660m Ryzen 5 7535U.

Buy business class of any line and it'll last. Been in IT for over a decade. Elitebooks and probooks handle abuse fine. Anything under 500 is designed to break unfortunately.

This laptop doesn't have any bios battery, thus might not be able to boot if main battery died.

How much does the Pavilion Plus 14 with Ryzen 7 7840U cost? If it is in the same price then it's the better choice.

A lot of 'thin and light' can handle more than they look these days. 300 grams more and you're already looking at stuff with a dGPU and combined system power of nearly 100w if you really want to.

You won't hear much most of the time. When it's under load, the fan noise is audible but still on the quiet side. In the end, I returned this laptop because I noticed the corner of the base bent upwards a little. So, when I rest my left hand on the keyboard, it would hit the desk.

Yeah still using it. I paid 730€ back in april 2023 which i consider a fair price. Battery lasts about 6 hours doing office stuff and web browsing. But two things to consider: 1. No Touchscreen which can definitely be nice especially with a notebook that size. 2. There is a lot of similar devices now that might be a little better when it comes to ram and storage size. So if you can get it for a good price I would still recommend it.

I've had mine for a couple of years. It's used daily when visiting clients or in my house when I'm not at my desk. Paid 500 USD for mine (Ryzen 5, 16 GB RAM) and it does everything I need and more while weighing nearly nothing.

They are still shipping these units with a 43 Wh Li-ion polymer battery, so he's not going to get 12h battery life unless he runs this at minimum brightness and runs notepad alone. I have the Ryzen 5600u model from a few years which has a lower res screen, and battery lasts for 6-7h.

The lenovo technically is better since it's an 8 core 16 thread part, but I think you can't go wrong with the aero either. 6 cores should be enough for university work. HP tunes the ryzen apus pretty well so you get decent battery life out of them.

The model is not fragile. The hinges are fine. It's very portable due to its incredibly negligible weight. I think it weighs less than a kilogramme.

I have the 5800u version. Not bad. I work every day with it for software development. But the build quality is very low. First and last HP for me. My next will be a Lenovo thinkpad.

The paint is starting to go off at different points, and the screen has permanent marks from pressure. Also, battery is more like 6-7h not 12.

My Aero 13 (5800 amd model) just had a motherboard failure where it no longer powers on because apparently I shouldn't use the usb-c port to charge the device (it advertises that feature and is a reason I bought it). I checked the HP aero page and they absolutely advertise the usb-c port as a premier piece of the laptop so pretty pissed.

I had the 5600u variant and got rid of it in a few months and replaced it with a probook g9. HP consumer laptops are terrible imo. The drivers and bios updates are almost non existent, there is no option to cap battery to 80% either and the build quality of aero was so bad imo.

I loved this laptop at first, but unfortunately there are design flaws that make pressure marks appear on the screen, and the paint wears off after some time. Also battery life is about 6-7h, not 10-12h as advertised. I'd say get a Zenbook 13-14 when it goes on sale.

Nothing yet, smooth like butter. I actually had to check if the fans were running while gaming, cause I couldn't hear them spin, and the laptop wasn't getting hot. I guess 680m is really power efficient. That's why even with a bit of a higher power draw, it's still cooler than the previous generation.

Everything I've said still holds true. Battery life has decreased a bit but I use my laptop mainly while plugged in. Structurally, the laptop has held up. Apart from one of the rubber pads on the bottom slightly peeling off (expected with daily usage and the heat), nothing much has happened to it. Recently started Ghost of Tsushima and it works great, no lag.

I purchased it last month! Working great till now. Couple issues I had: Got a stuck pixel. Felt a bit slow at the beginning but pretty snappy since I've deleted bloatware and updated to the latest software. The charging speed via the usb c port is very slow for me.

I'm having issues with the display where when I scroll the text and everything just lags behind and it's noticeable on the cursor too when I drag it, really bad ghosting or screen tearing of some sort and I can't figure out what it is. I've checked all the drivers and stuff but haven't seen anyone with a similar issue.

I just got this laptop and ran some tests. From coreTemp, cpu power is limited to 15W under load. Nonetheless it is a great laptop, I got the 7735U FHD version at just 680 dollars which is amazing.

I am thinking on buying it. The specs all seem really good. Only thing that bothered me is onboard RAM. The RAM is soldered on motherboard. What if a situation of RAM failure comes into play.

Clearly you're abusing it. Scratches? Screen marks? What the hell are you doing other than typing on it?? Keep it in a protective case in your bag, and it won't get damaged.

I don't think I would classify the Aero as a low end device. Maybe the pavilion nomenclature suggests that, but still, $650 on sale isn't cheap.

I'd swap now to normal charging. The repair guy seemed to feel pretty strongly it was a cheap build design flaw — if I used the charger that comes with it, it would've been fine. I used usb-c because I hated carrying separate chargers for all my devices. I'm so burned by this that I'm not planning to repair the device because I'm worried something else will break.
