Summary

The HP Spectre x360 14 (2024) is a premium 2-in-1 convertible that earns genuine praise for its stunning 4K OLED display, exceptional build quality, and comfortable keyboard, but divides Reddit heavily on thermals, battery life, and reliability. Sentiment skews mixed-to-negative, with a vocal subset of owners reporting persistent fan noise, 5–7 hour real-world battery despite advertised figures, and concerning QC issues including faulty motherboards and ports. That said, a meaningful portion of users — particularly those who did a clean Windows install to remove HP bloatware — report smooth, quiet, long-lasting performance. The laptop appeals most to professionals doing light-to-moderate workloads who value form factor and display quality, and less so to power users expecting consistent sustained performance. It was HP's flagship consumer convertible before the line was rebranded under the Omnibook family, making it effectively the last of its kind.

Pros

  • 4K OLED display is widely considered class-leading — vivid colors, high brightness, and 120Hz refresh rate make it a standout for media consumption and productivity alike
  • Build quality is exceptional with a fully machined aluminum chassis; hinges are screwed into tapped threads rather than plastic mounts, giving it a noticeably premium feel over most competitors
  • Keyboard receives consistent praise across hundreds of comments — better than Dell XPS according to multiple owners, with good key travel and a satisfying haptic touchpad
  • Clean Windows reinstall dramatically improves the experience: users who removed HP bloatware report 8–10+ hour battery life, quieter fans, and much better thermal performance
  • Versatile 2-in-1 form factor works well for tablet use cases like PDF annotation and media consumption in tent/stand mode, with good pen sensitivity
  • Available at significant discounts — open box units from Best Buy were found as low as $600–$800, making the premium hardware more accessible

Cons

  • Battery life out of the box is disappointing: most real-world users report 5–7 hours under light use, far short of the 9–12 hours cited in professional reviews, primarily blamed on HP bloatware and aggressive background processes
  • Thermal and fan behavior is a consistent complaint — fans run constantly even during light tasks on stock configuration, and chassis temperatures make lap use uncomfortable for some users
  • Quality control issues are a real concern: multiple users reported faulty units requiring warranty repairs (failed motherboards, broken USB-C charging ports, lid sensors), and some went through 2–3 replacements
  • Intel Arc GPU has limited driver maturity — problematic for 3D rendering workflows, lacks support for major GPU compute platforms like Redshift and Octane, and delivers poor gaming performance even at 1080p low settings
  • Screen door effect (SDE) is visible on the OLED panel when viewing from close distance, particularly on white backgrounds — a known trade-off of the pentile OLED subpixel layout at this size
  • The Spectre line has been discontinued in favor of the Omnibook series, and replacement batteries are not widely available — long-term repairability is a concern for buyers thinking beyond a 3-year window

Clean Install Changes Everything

Dozens of owners on r/spectrex360 report a night-and-day improvement after wiping HP's stock image — fan noise drops, battery jumps to 8–10 hours, and thermal throttling largely disappears. The laptop many reviewers tested may not be the laptop most buyers actually receive.

Is the Spectre Worth It When the Omnibook Exists?

Now that HP has moved on to the Omnibook Ultra Flip with second-gen Intel Core Ultra chips and better battery efficiency, buyers face a real question: is the Spectre's lower price enough to justify older silicon and a discontinued product line with no clear repair path?

The QC Lottery Nobody Warned You About

Reddit is full of Spectre owners who love their units and owners who've been through two or three replacements. The hardware design gets near-universal praise — it's the manufacturing consistency that splits the community, and it's something no spec sheet will tell you.

I had performance issues until I updated to windows 24H2. Runs like a charm, best laptop I ever had (and had some).

I got the 14 about a week ago. Everything has been great except the battery life. I've turned off the backlit keyboard, turned down screen brightness to about 20%, stopped launching most programs at startup, and still getting only 6-7 hours.

I had 2 of them actually, got the 16gb of ram and 1tb ssd returned it because it was slow, laggy, hot, and the fans kicked on when using google. I thought it was a bad unit, returned it for the 32gb of ram and 2tb ssd model and it did the same thing. Returned it and got a MacBook Pro no issues I love that thing.

I haven't had any issues. Too bad you've had all these issues. I still think it's a nice Windows laptop.

Why does every review say it's the best or top 2-3 2-in-1 you can buy?

My girlfriend got the 16 inch version with the 4050 and it's been great. Screen and build quality is top notch. 100% would recommend it.

I had a 2018 Spectre x360, it worked fine for the first 3 years, then the battery wouldn't hold charges and I started getting intermittent blue screens beginning in the 4th year. I also had the heat problem others mentioned. On the other hand, my 6 years old MacBook Pro still works flawlessly. I would not get another HP product.

I have had great experience using the 2024 Spectre 14-inch model. Mine was an i7, 32GB, 1TB SSD model. The build quality is excellent. Keyboard is better than Dell, though slightly worse than ThinkPad. Trackpad is average. Screen is fantastic. Battery life is great (no comparison to a Mac). I get 9 hr of Youtube 4K video testing.

The keyboard is phenomenal, the build quality is phenomenal, it's OLED, 120hz, very long battery life, and runs very cool. The 9i is a good laptop but it isn't quite as comfortable to type on and gets very VERY hot very easily.

I got the 32/1TB on that deal and it fuckin slaps. Handles my intensive graphics projects just fine. At max performance with heavy load it dies in like 4-5 hrs. But normal use it lasts longer. Love the pen — magnetizes so satisfyingly onto the side. Keyboard is awesome. Screen is insane. So sharp.

I got myself a 32gb 2tb unit, ran a battery test yesterday running YouTube stream all the time at 50% brightness without speakers, it lasted for around 6 hours. When doing more intensive stuff like programming it would last around 3 hours maximum. This laptop is really great in terms of build quality, but in terms of thermal, noise and battery it's very disappointing. CPU remains at 75+ centigrade all the time unless you are not doing anything.

Spectre 2024 is pretty nice, but according to many reviewers, the next gen intel chips are noticeably outperforming Meteor Lake in terms of either battery efficiency or performance. Overall, it's a great laptop and feels good to hold, with a decent battery. I am not sure of any other better options for the price, but I would recommend the Spectre 2024 as a good laptop.

Took a while to figure out the bloatware. With OLED battery life is not great. The keyboard is weird and has no insert key. Speakers are poor. I still kinda like it, but in hindsight should have gotten a standard business laptop or a macbook.

Screen is amazing, I don't notice any screen door effect. Low/No fan noise most of the time. Touchpad is awesome, better than the MBA M2. Keyboard is nice to type on. The annoying thing is it's hard to get a grip of the lid to open it.

Not great at all. This was my second Spectre. This one almost immediately had issues. I took it back to Best Buy a few months later because it was lagging really badly and the webcam would cut out intermittently. I went over to the Envy with an AMD chip, which runs much faster and cooler.

I needed to uninstall a lot of bloat and do a lot of digging in registry editor and task scheduler, but after configuring it how I want it holds battery well and is very responsive. The display is stunning otherwise!

Love it. Great build, compact, fast, and being the premium customer laptop, it got enough focus to make it a great build compared to last year. It's also quiet, and a great price with discounts.

I have the highest spec model and would love it if it weren't for the problems it has given me. First one I got had a faulty lid sensor. Returned it for a new one and the new one appears to have some major thermal issues — will push over 100 degrees Celsius when in sleep mode or just using MS Word and then have a thermal shutdown.

I bought a 32GB / 2TB version and I have mixed impressions. It is difficult to open because of a very small cutout on the body. The most unpleasant thing is that it sometimes does not turn on until it is connected to an external power source even when fully charged.

I bought one recently and can't get used to the little dots on the screen when looking at it from closer distance, apparently it is a digitizer. Otherwise the panel is great. I had the same experience with the performance as you — very slow for these specs, delayed reactions even in explorer. After a clean install the numbers increased matching others and it became much better.

I love mine! Best keyboard I've ever used, and I own the 2022 MacBook Pro. I'm only returning it because I recently found the Omnibook Ultra Flip on a big sale from Best Buy.

Heat is much lower than any previous Spectre gen. I kicked off a CPU-Z CPU stress test, let it run for 10 minutes, the CPU didn't exceed 67°C and the laptop itself only had a slightly warm area around where the CPU is. As for the fans, they are bigger than previous models so their noise is less high-pitched, it's a much softer sound and they don't kick up nearly as much as previous gens.

I do want to point out that the Spectre is an outgoing model and has been replaced by the Omnibook. The biggest difference is that the Omnibook has the generation 2 of the Ultra chips from Intel while the Spectre has generation 1. Good on you for finding a great price though.

I originally bought a Yoga 7 but the screen colors were way off so I ended up exchanging it for this. Screen is amazing, super bright and media looks great on it. Keyboard has decent travel. All the different tablet modes work well and Windows responds quickly to changing orientation. Trackpad works well, haven't run into any issues.

Worst laptop I ever bought. Got 2 units and both were terrible to use. Went for a mbp m3pro and couldn't be happier.

I really liked the keyboard, screen and trackpad but it is way too power limited for its specifications. It isn't easy to clean install as bios updates require a specific hp partition to work. The quality control is awful. My touch stopped working after one week. Swapped mine for a Zephyrus. Very different laptop but vastly better.

I've owned two Spectre x360s — 2019 and a 2021 model. They have both been amazing.

Love everything about my 1 week old HP Spectre X360 14 2024 — except the battery life. Office work and some YouTube and I get max 5-6 hours of battery. Also there is no battery optimization running on the laptop. HP is clueless about this. Other than that the laptop is a stunner.

I freaking love mine. They're sold out from every single store and Best Buy where I live but I got so lucky when the store clerk found one on display he could sell to me. The screen is impeccable and the new Haptic Touch screen is very nice. I love showing it off and many people compliment my laptop.

I did a clean Windows re-install to delete all the BS, made the CPU boost to be manually turned on or off instead of always on, and turned the Always Fans in BIOS off. Absolutely love it. Great laptop, temps, fan noise. The battery is always 8-10+ hours of work, YouTube, movies etc.

I have this same model and it's a solid performer. I feel like the only downside is the fact that it's the last of its kind.

I had the 2024 Spectre Ultra7 155H version. Flawless machine. I can even play StarCraft on battery. Normal use can be up to 6-8 hours. Got lucky at Best Buy open box for $600 US dollars. Best bang for my buck ever.

Got the Spectre Ultra 5, honestly best laptop (for everyday/work use, not gaming, editing etc) I ever had. Easy to handle, I take it everywhere with me, travelling for fun, for work. It never abandoned me.

Personally have the Spectre 16. Not worth the cost as it has major thermal issues and throttling. Underpowered GPU and horrible battery life.

Just searched for genuine replacement batteries for the 14 and 16. Guess what? None. Anywhere. I'll go Asus or Lenovo.

The build quality of this laptop is exceptional, much better than my old Envy x360 due to the fully machined housing on both the lid and lower casing. The hinges are screwed into tapped threads on the machined housing rather than directly into plastic mounts, giving it a much more premium feel.

Have it for a week. Did clean Windows install to get rid of bloatware. Updated everything: Windows updates, HP Support Assistant, all Intel drivers. Love everything about it: footprint, OLED screen, resolution, keyboard (so smooth), trackpad (so smooth), quietness.

I found the battery life underwhelming. I was underwhelmed with the fluidity of the web browsing experience — it was fast, but it wasn't smooth. The trackpad was accurate but felt choppy. When I installed Chrome OS Flex on it, it immediately fixed my complaints.

Picked up an HP Spectre x360 a month ago for my wife. She really likes it. In shopping for her, I thought I really liked it so much that I picked up an additional one for myself. However, buyer beware — I tripped selecting models and ended up with a configuration I didn't intend.

I would definitely recommend the Omnibook Ultra Flip. It's not a lot more to pay for a new generation, and unless you actually need specifically multicore performance the Core Ultra 256V is much better for most users.

I had to return it within a week. The big issue was the screen — you literally can't use this laptop at night or in complete dark without eye strain. The display looked very good at first but sooner I realised that the display is yellowish and has lots of tint, and if you look for a long time the screen causes irritation in the eyes.
