Summary

The HP Victus 15 (2022) is a budget gaming laptop that earns genuinely mixed reactions on Reddit — praised for punching above its price class in raw performance, but routinely criticized for build quality that users describe as alarmingly flimsy. It's aimed squarely at stationary desk gamers or students who need GPU grunt on a tight budget and can live without portability. The 144Hz FHD display and capable Intel/AMD CPU pairings make it competent for esports titles and light creative work, but the plastic chassis, wobbly hinges, and poor battery life make it a poor fit for anyone who regularly moves around with their laptop. Long-term reliability reports are inconsistent, with some users sailing through years without issues while others report motherboard failures and component degradation within 18 months.

Pros

  • Strong gaming performance for the price — Valorant runs at 200-300+ FPS on mid-range configs, and the RTX 4050 variant handles demanding titles like RDR2 and God of War on medium-high settings without issues
  • RAM and storage are user-upgradeable with two SO-DIMM slots and an open M.2 slot, letting buyers stretch the value post-purchase without voiding usability
  • 144Hz FHD display is a genuine differentiator at this price tier, providing noticeably smoother gameplay for fast-paced titles compared to 60Hz budget alternatives
  • Thermal performance is acceptable under gaming load — CPU temps on Intel variants typically stay under 90°C even during intensive rendering sessions, with fans that aren't excessively loud
  • Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3 on newer variants keep connectivity competitive, with some users noting the MediaTek card outperforming pricier competitors in real-world link speeds
  • Frequently discounted to sub-$500 at major retailers, making it one of the better raw performance-per-dollar options in the budget gaming segment when caught on sale

Cons

  • Build quality is widely described as the laptop's biggest flaw — plastic chassis flexes noticeably, the lid bounces when carried by hand, and hinges inspire zero confidence; one user nicknamed it 'HP (Hinge Problems)'
  • Battery life is poor even by gaming laptop standards — approximately 2 hours of screen-on time in normal use, making it impractical for classroom or commuter use without a power outlet nearby
  • Display color accuracy is mediocre at roughly 60-65% sRGB, with a reported yellow tint affecting some units out of the box that requires manual calibration to correct
  • Long-term reliability is inconsistent — multiple users report component failures including motherboard death, speaker failure, Wi-Fi card failure, and display issues, often occurring just after warranty expiry
  • The RTX 3050 variants, especially at prices above €650-700, represent poor value in 2025 when RTX 5050-equipped alternatives are available in the same price bracket
  • AMD Ryzen variants on some units have been reported to hit 100°C+ under sustained CPU load, which is meaningfully higher than the Intel counterparts and raises longevity concerns

The Lid Won't Stay Shut and the Fans Won't Stop Spinning — But It Games

Reddit owners are consistent on two things: the HP Victus 15 delivers real gaming performance, and the build quality is genuinely alarming. The screen wobbles, the lid bounces, and users openly wonder how long the hinges will last. Most still recommend it — just don't expect to take it anywhere.

At Sale Price It's a Deal. At Full Retail, There Are Better Options

The Victus 15 earns its reputation almost entirely on discounted pricing. At $450-$500 the RTX 4050 + i5 config is a legitimate steal. At full MSRP or for the RTX 3050 variants above €650, Reddit consistently points buyers toward the ASUS TUF or Lenovo LOQ as better-built alternatives with comparable or better GPUs.

Surprisingly Capable for Video Editing and Content Creation

While marketed as a gaming laptop, several Reddit owners use the Victus 15 primarily for 4K video editing and heavy rendering workloads — and report it handles sustained GPU-intensive tasks well. The upgradeable RAM slots make hitting 32GB straightforward, which noticeably improves multitasking performance.

I simply don't have any trust in the build quality. Whenever I carry mine in hand, the lid starts bouncing and doesn't stay fully shut.

Have the same build as op and found that it's easier to get a laptop bag with a laptop compartment to avoid the bouncing.

The cooling is great tbh, when playing games gets a TINY bit hot but I wouldn't say it's anything to worry about whatsoever. I play games at times without headphones and the fans barely trouble my hearing as well. I also edit 4k videos and have heavy effects when editing and I've had no issues thus far so I recommend this heavily!

I love mine, bought it last august for school and light gaming for $700. Mine is basically the base model - i5-12450 with 8gb ddr4 and the gtx 1650. Today you can get a way better victus laptop for the same price but besides cyberpunk, this thing is running any game I throw at it crisp I love it. 32gb ram is a requirement tho, shouldn't even consider using it without a ram upgrade.

It basically depends on the price, but I assume there might be better alternatives with the similar price range. For example, I saw an Asus TUF Advantage Edition 2023 with much better display and gaming capacity priced almost similarly.

Got an HP Victus last year and honestly it's been a mess. Something or the other keeps failing every few months — speaker died (with blunt screws inside, opened first time), display went black and needed a new motherboard, fan started making noise, Wi-Fi card failed. And the service is super slow and frustrating.

Same problem, laptop shutdown by himself and refuse to start, in service they said motherboard needs to be replaced, waste of money. Don't buy this never. Was 14th gen laptop, 3050 gpu... worst ever.

It's been 4 months and it's still holding up as perfectly as I mentioned before. I'm also planning on upgrading the ram soon to make it 32 cause why not, the GPU doesn't overheat much (even when I'm doing intensive renders that require a lot of power), the build quality is still ass obviously, however it's a non-issue for me and nothing is broken or has been damaged cause it just sits on my table all day everyday except for the weekly cleanups.

I've been using HP Victus 15 for 2 months, I could say this is the best gaming laptop that ever existed from HP.

Have you encountered any problems with thermals? I have the AMD 5600H version and when looking at thermals mine gets up to 102c/215.6F. The GPU is fine staying below thermal threshold.

Thanks for the advice! I think I will get it, the pros definitely outweigh this one issue and it probably won't bother me to be fair. It'll be great to have a laptop that won't crash playing Minecraft at a render distance higher than 12.

Features are promising, but from what you said it seems like poor build quality.

Very honestly you've obviously just gotten a faulty device. I've never experienced any one of those issues you mentioned except for the fact that the build quality is truly dogshit. Everything else has never happened and probably won't happen for years unless you don't care for the device as well as it should be.

Well I haven't seen any increase in heat whatsoever from the RAM and SSD upgrades, just been the same as it always has.

I bought this HP Victus in 2022, in August. It is a tough and sturdy laptop. I paid around 990 AUD brand new for it and it was worth the purchase. My main intention of purchasing a gaming laptop was not to game on it but have great specs for multi-tasking; YouTube and CAD/Simulations while at the same time have it last for many years.

The problem for me was that there was a bit of a yellow tint on display. It is apparently a common problem with the Victus.

The build quality of this laptop has been disappointing after using it for 3+ months. I'd give it a generous 5/10. Nothing has technically gone wrong, but the plastic feels weak, and the hinges require extra care. Since I keep it on a table, it's manageable, but if you plan to use it on your lap or in bed, expect a lot of wobbling unless it's on a stable surface.

Well the Hinge is pretty bad, we call HP (Hinge Problems) for a reason tbh. The thing is I'm using it with the most care possible (only take it from my table if I'm cleaning the laptop) and I'm still incredibly afraid of closing it too hard or doing anything that would make the screen shake enough to cause issues for the hinge. From the way I use it I'd give it a solid year and a half more (so 2 years in total since the purchase) at most to keep up, after that I'll leave it up to fate.

Battery is pretty bad, about 2 hours max with normal usage, but of course that is totally expected and make sure you keep it on charge when playing games.

Personally wouldn't recommend it for portability, about 2 hours when not plugged in so I doubt it would work that well unless you use it on battery saver. This is practically just for gaming in a very stationary place like a desk cause of the screen wobble + battery life.

I have the HP Victus 15 - 4060, i7 13620H, 32GB ram. The battery is pretty good for a gaming laptop — mine gives 4-5 hours of battery backup with Microsoft Edge and Discord and Logitech in the background with normal browsing and YouTube streaming. And with eco mode you will probably get 2-3x the amount of battery backup compared to normal.

The specific issue you're gonna have is the screen wobble tbh. It's already pretty shit on the desk but on a bed? Even with a folding desk surface I can't guarantee a normal experience. I personally would get it just cause of the performance it provides for gaming and editing, you probably won't have any lag nor issues on most tasks.

The version I got had 46% NTSC which means it's roughly 60-65% sRGB.

I have the same version. The right side of my laptop gets heated more than the left side when it remains cooler, just feels like only one side of the fan is working. Is it normal or what?

No it is not a good deal. A 5050 for this price wouldn't make sense, let alone a 3050.

Aw man, okay thanks for the info! Although in my country, the cheapest 5050 I could find is 840€.

Go with the HP honestly, that 4050 is gonna give you way better performance and the newer i5 is solid too. Yeah HP build quality isn't amazing but it's not terrible either, and you'll notice the GPU difference way more than any build quality issues. The TUF is built like a tank but that 3050 is gonna struggle with some of those games you mentioned, especially RDR2 and God of War on higher settings.

Check the model if the Victus has Hall sensor issue. People have reported that especially for RTX 40 series Victus laptops. If you ask me I will go for the Asus because of build quality and better temps.

Mine got fucked up just after 1 and half years. The hardware and the software is among the better ones, but the cheaply made recycled plastic is a different thing. It started with the bottom rubber foot getting swelled up and then it could no longer sit in its place. Then the cabinet began opening up from behind the hinges, eventually it broke a little bit of plastic while opening and closing the lid. Man, I regret getting this over the Asus TUF by saving a little bit, since that at least has a metal build.

Let's be honest man, the B&O audio on HP sucks, especially via the audio jack. So far I have had no hardware and software related issues (well except for the wifi getting disconnected on its own when on battery power, but it got resolved with the windows update). But the cabinet is beyond just shitty. I have never had such a cheaply made laptop before in my life.

I've run into this before with gaming laptops. The difference usually comes down to the wifi card model - the Victus might have a better card or one that handles MIMO better. If you end up needing a replacement, an Intel AX210 or AX200 are solid upgrades that play nice with most boards. Just make sure the BIOS isn't whitelisted first.

The HP Victus is with MediaTek WiFi 6, but the Gigabyte A16 has Intel AX211 160MHz. I already tested both the older driver and newest, but the result remained the same.

Battery life could be better. I use the laptop for university as well and it can get through 3 classes (about 5 hrs) unplugged. I do also have a million tabs open at once though so that might influence that a bit. Charges decently fast though.

I'm from Romania and someone sells this laptop with RTX 3050, AMD Ryzen 5 and 8GB RAM for 290 euros. Is it worth it? I'll change the RAM if it decreases the performance.

Battery is pretty bad, about 2 hours max with normal usage. If it gets to 100%, once you finish the game just plug it off and let the battery go down, and then when playing again plug it in so the battery will get used properly rather than get charged every moment.

The more demanding games I'd just play on medium if there's a problem, I don't really care about high graphics to be honest.
