Summary

The HP Victus 16 (2024) is a budget-to-mid-range gaming laptop that punches above its weight in raw performance, particularly in AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS and RTX 4070 configurations. Reddit sentiment is genuinely split: many owners rave about the value at sale prices ($849–$900), while a vocal minority report real hardware reliability concerns including hinge weakness, motherboard failures, and occasional thermal issues. It's best suited for gamers who prioritize GPU performance per dollar and are willing to accept compromises in display quality and build materials. Users consistently recommend upgrading RAM to 32GB and the SSD, as the base configurations leave some performance on the table. Overall, it's a compelling deal when on sale, but harder to justify at full retail.

Pros

  • RTX 4070 + Ryzen 7 8845HS configuration delivers strong 1080p gaming performance, with users reporting 90–150 FPS in demanding titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and ARK on ultra settings
  • AMD variant includes a MUX switch for better battery efficiency in iGPU mode, giving it a notable advantage over older Intel Victus models that lacked this feature
  • Easy to upgrade: RAM and SSD slots are user-accessible, and many owners successfully upgraded to 32GB DDR5 and 2TB NVMe without issues
  • Lightweight and portable for its GPU tier, making it practical for students and users who move between locations
  • Exceptional value when found on sale — repeatedly praised at $849–$900 as one of the best RTX 4070 laptop deals available
  • Laptop can remain plugged in 24/7 without battery degradation, a useful design choice for desktop-replacement users

Cons

  • Display is only 62.5% sRGB / 45% NTSC — a significant compromise for a laptop with this GPU tier, making color-sensitive work impractical without an external monitor
  • Hinge quality is a recurring complaint across multiple generations, with some users reporting wobble or breakage; HP's nickname 'Hinge Problem' appears repeatedly in discussions
  • Motherboard reliability is a real concern — multiple users reported motherboard failures or hall sensor issues, with some requiring 2–3 replacements under warranty
  • Fan noise is loud under load; out-of-the-box thermal management benefits significantly from custom fan curves via Omen Gaming Hub or a repaste
  • HP bloatware can interfere with game launches — removing the Omen Gaming Hub app without a clean Windows install breaks certain game compatibility
  • At full MSRP ($1,299–$1,399), the value proposition weakens considerably compared to similarly priced alternatives with better build quality

Repaste It and Thank Yourself Later

Owners who repasted their Victus 16 report dramatically quieter fans and more stable thermals, with GPU temps dropping significantly. It's become almost a rite of passage in the r/HPVictus community — and the results speak for themselves.

A 4070 Laptop for $850? The Catch Is the Screen

At sale price, the HP Victus 16 offers RTX 4070 performance that's hard to find cheaper anywhere else. The tradeoff is a 62.5% sRGB display that multiple Reddit users flagged as its single biggest hardware compromise — fine for gaming, rough for anything color-sensitive.

The Motherboard Problem That Won't Go Away

Beyond hinge complaints, a subset of Victus 16 owners have dealt with motherboard failures — some requiring multiple replacements under warranty. It's not universal, but it's consistent enough across threads that prospective buyers should factor warranty coverage into their purchase decision.

This laptop only has a 45% NTSC display. If you care much about color accuracy you should spend a bit more. This is an excellent deal in terms of CPU/GPU specs. It's unbelievable that manufacturers use these bare-bones displays with this type of hardware in a laptop.

Screen is only 62.5% SRGB Coverage is the biggest tradeoff, but will otherwise be hard to beat the performance for the money.

Performance is great, noise is not bad and can be used on your lap without overheating. I would recommend a clean windows install from USB immediately after linking the W11 to your microsoft account. There is so much HP bloatware and it won't run certain games if you just remove the Omen gaming hub app.

I have the HP 16-s1023dx 4070 8845. It has been the best gaming laptop I've ever owned and at 45 I've had a lot. In fact I sold my 2022 Lenovo Ideapad 3 1 month after I got it. The hinges are fine and thermals are fine.

Epic deal even though it's from Hinge Problem (HP). Well worth it at this price point!

I bought this model a few weeks ago. The screen isn't too terrible, but obviously not great. If you are gaming, you probably are using an external monitor anyway. I like the fact I can take it with me, and it uses the igpu to save power, and then can ramp up when I plug it in.

Been using Victus 16 for a year now (2024 model). 0 problems. Idk why most guys are so much after it. Either you treat laptops like shit and dont know how to handle them or are doing funky stuff and expecting it to keep going.

If I were you, I'd rather build a PC. Though, if laptop's your only choice yes, it is better than at least the other budget ones like LOQ or Asus Tuff or A series.

I have the rtx 4070. Runs most things on high or maxed out settings. Only 8gb vram so don't expect to run ray tracing well especially on the newest games. Older and less demanding games run pretty much maxed out with 60+ fps, many 100+fps. My biggest complaint is the fan is extremely loud.

I bought it fairly recently (about a month ago) and only issue I have had is with Bluetooth connectivity but a reset tends to fix it. Everything else has been great with no complaints.

Lot of people will say don't repaste a new laptop... I did, it now runs perfect and very quiet / cool. Can barely hear the fans most games. Elevate it with a stand.

The specs are decent and are along the line of what one would expect from most of the RTX4070. The only thing I would say is I would upgrade the SSD to 1 TB on your own if you can. Also if you have the chance, go to any of the store to test the HP Victus keyboard and screen color / visibility to see if it is to your liking.

I have victus with 4070 for a month and thanks to lightweight i can take it everywhere and i played baldurs gate 3, ark survival evolved with epic graphics + full resolution i get 150fps for ark when im flying among forests (85° gpu temp). For baldurs gate 3 I get 90-100 fps with ultra (70° gpu temp). This laptop has everything i asked for.

I've got the one with the i7 13700H and 4070 and it is an absolute beast, tanking everything I've thrown at it. All games run on max settings with Ray Tracing and DLSS with really high framerates and it is not as heavy as some MSI or Lenovo models. Battery life kinda sucks but it's to be expected from a gaming laptop.

Don't. HP is ending this line due to poor quality. HP stands for hinge problems. While the idea of filling a space just below the Omen line for mid gamers sounds great, it failed spectacularly. Hinge problems, overheating issues, quality control, parts procurement, the list goes on and on.

I DJ & host karaoke 6 nights a week banging away on this laptop the last 2 years & it has served me well. The only gripe I can complain about is the wobbly hinge. I have multiple screens running for YouTube, Mixxx software, karafun & everything in between. I've also used this laptop outside in mid 90's-100 degree temps this past summer. No hiccups.

I just ordered this exact model from BB for 890 usd for school. Unfortunately it's no longer on sale and not really worth its normal price of 1300.

Not sure if the plastic quality improve over the year but the plastic feels real cheap. It would leave disgusting stain if your palm, your hand sweat.

I've been using it for 4 months, I played most of the AAA Titled games likes AC Mirage, AC Unity, Far Cry 3, 4, 5, TLOU Part 1, TLOU Part 2 and Days Gone. So far no any issues happened. No heating issues, no performance issues. But to be honest the build quality of all the Victus including mine is very cheap and minimal.

I've had the Victus for about a year now and it works perfectly for CoD and LOL, which is what I usually play. I don't really see any problems with the PC. I connect it to a curved Samsung monitor and play perfectly.

No. I have had battery issues multiple times. Though it seems to be good it has a very poor hinge quality.

I'd recommend it. It's cheap, budget friendly and has good performance. I don't understand why people complain about screen wiggling (can't even notice it) and short battery life (supposed to play on charging lol)

Mine had the infamous stutter issue while any high GPU task because of inefficient power draw from motherboard, got the motherboard replaced twice then the whole unit itself, new victus still stutters but not as much... can run modern demanding games in 60 fps on medium to high settings 1080p, competitive games 144fps with a few tweaks in the settings.

I mean, I have a 15, and it's great for a budget laptop, but if you are wanting a high end laptop, then I'd go for something with a bit better build quality.

Shit panel. My screen has just been replaced because of dead pixels and I still have 1 very small one on the new one at the bottom right AGAIN, I'm sure it's because of the hinges which press on the screen.

The motherboard is sensitive. I managed to kill my motherboard just by accidentally dropping my screw bit while i was installing new RAM.

I have the 7000 series from 2024 and I detest it! The power supply died within the 1st month of use, it and the laptop gets hot enough to cook on. It has problems coming out of sleep mode, which forces me to shutdown and restart. It drops the wifi signal and then won't reconnect unless I reboot.

Specs are good for the price. You are making a significant compromise on build quality and thermals. I would recommend you look for something with a 4060 at a similar price but with better build and thermals. A 4070 is only like 10-20% faster anyway, not very significant.

I bought it for ₹80k. And it was biggest mistake hp didn't care about their products, at first I faced hall sensor issue it was a motherboard fault.

Personally I am happy with my Victus, no problems with hinge after 1.5 year of use. Battery life on my model is pretty bad, about 3 hours, but a lot of people with AMD CPU have much better battery life than users with Intel CPUs.

I do video editing and 3d designing on mine and on many occasions I can notice its shortcomings since I use it daily. It has instability in performance sometimes for no reason and overheats just because it can.

My HP Victus Gaming 16 with Intel Core i7-13700H has CPU reaching 84-90°C on fucking idle. I tried everything: repasting the thermal paste, I used thermal pads, then tried using thermal putty — nothing solved it. When gaming it's even worse — CPU reaches 100°C while GPU is at 75-80°C.

I do have the AMD version and my temps never go up 75-80 playing Path of Exile on Ultra. Beast, but make sure to plug an external monitor.

I had to sell mine because it wouldn't stop overheating and performance dropped heavily since I bought it.
