Summary

The Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15 (2021) occupies a solid middle ground in the budget laptop space, earning consistent praise for its keyboard quality, AMD Ryzen performance, and overall value for everyday tasks like schoolwork and light productivity. Reddit sentiment is genuinely mixed — users who buy it for the right reasons (college, office work, media consumption) tend to be satisfied, while those who push it harder or keep it beyond the warranty period report frustration. The hinge durability issue is the single most repeated complaint across multiple threads, with several users reporting failures within 2–3 years of light to moderate use. The screen situation is complicated by the existence of two panel options — the TFT LCD version is considered mediocre at best, while the IPS panel is considered a significant upgrade worth seeking out.

Pros

  • Ryzen 5700U delivers genuinely capable multi-core performance for college and productivity workloads — users consistently report smooth multitasking and even 4K video playback on battery without stuttering
  • Keyboard and touchpad quality regularly get called out as punching above their price class, with solid tactile feedback that doesn't feel cheap
  • IPS screen variant (where available) offers 300 nits and strong color accuracy for the price range — reviewers note it edges out most competition at similar price points
  • Expandability stands out for the segment: an extra SATA slot for a second drive and a single upgradeable RAM slot on the 16GB models give users room to grow
  • Fanless or near-silent operation during light use makes it a genuinely low-distraction machine for classrooms and libraries
  • Intel MX450 variant offers a discrete GPU option for light gaming like Genshin Impact at 1080p 60fps, which the AMD iGPU-only configs can't match out of the box

Cons

  • Hinge failure is the most commonly reported hardware issue — multiple users across r/Lenovo and r/laptops report the hinge cracking or snapping the screen bezel within 2–3 years, sometimes with minimal use
  • The TFT LCD panel found in some configurations has poor contrast and only 45% color gamut — a dealbreaker for any color-sensitive work without an external monitor
  • Touchpad reliability issues surface repeatedly: random input lag, complete failures after firmware updates, and motherboard replacements required under warranty in some cases
  • Battery life is decent under light use but drops sharply under any sustained load — users report around 4–5 hours under moderate use, with some outliers getting less
  • No included SATA cable for the second drive slot — requires a service center visit to purchase and install, which undercuts the expandability advantage
  • Post-warranty longevity is a real concern: multiple users across different IdeaPad generations report that issues tend to cluster just after coverage expires, and repair costs often approach replacement value

The Hinge Problem Nobody Warned You About

Across multiple Reddit threads spanning several years, the IdeaPad 5 15's hinge failure is a recurring story — screen bezels cracking, hinges snapping without drops, and repair quotes that make buying new look attractive. It's the clearest pattern in the data and worth factoring in before purchase.

Two Screens, Two Very Different Laptops

The IdeaPad 5 15 ships with either a TFT LCD or an IPS panel depending on configuration, and the difference is stark. The IPS variant gets consistently positive marks for brightness and color accuracy at the price point; the TFT version gets compared unfavorably to budget competition. Knowing which panel you're buying matters more than most spec comparisons here.

Still Worth It for the Right Person

College students and light-use buyers who go in with calibrated expectations tend to come away satisfied — the keyboard, AMD performance, and silent operation genuinely deliver for that audience. The complaints cluster around power users and long-term owners, not the people this laptop was designed for.

I got Ideapad5 i7 1255u for 2 years, it's a good laptop and it is worth it, do not expect too much.

You may be confusing the IdeaPad Flex with the other IdeaPads. All 2-in-1 laptops including the IdeaPad Flex have terribly fragile hinges. The normal non-2-in-1 IdeaPads are fine.

I own a ideapad slim 5i and yes the build quality isn't the greatest but it is just enough, other than that I don't find any other problems.

I can confirm that the hinge quality is garbage. I use mine almost entirely at home, after 2 years of use I have used it no more than 30 times outside. I very rarely open and close the lid when I use it at home because I can sense right from the beginning the hinge quality is not the best although I did not expect it to be this bad. And yet the hinge broke! Together with the LCD!

I have had an Ideapad pro for the best seven years and it is still going well. Build quality is good and still all in very good condition. I am considering a newer Ideapad Pro as my next laptop.

I have a 2021 ideapad 5. Bought it new, great for first 2 years of warranty. Not long after that fingerprint reader stopped working, touchpad randomly disables, laptop crashing after some light gaming and a bunch of minor issues. A pain in the ass trying to fix them. If the warranty runs out you're pretty much cooked. Would not buy a lenovo again in the future.

Just lower your expectations. It will probably be fine for about 2 years. But afterwards you can definitely expect case issues or battery failure. They are not built to last a long time like MacBooks for example.

I have had multiple Ideapads clamshell designs. They always last 3.5 to 4 years of use. I just often upgrade at that point. They are one of the best budget lines IMHO.

I have the ideapad pro with the Core ultra 9 and 32gb of RAM and it has been absolutely fantastic. Even for gaming — tried Witcher 3, got about 70-90 FPS AVG at med settings at 1920x1200, tried Skyrim which runs fine at 70 more or less at ultra same resolution.

I've been struggling with myself to buy or not to buy this model. My old laptop is still decent, but it is already starting to show its age. I'm going to buy the IPS version. I much prefer an IPS, 100% sRGB, than an OLED.

I've had an ideapad for over 6 years. Not the greatest computer, but it has lasted. The battery has been pretty much toast since the first year I had it. Also certain parts of my settings haven't opened in years. Other than that, not bad.

Dog shit. I got IdeaPad gaming, fans and sound have died within a year just after warranty expired. No fix yet, it had no dust nothing. Just spontaneously died. I regret my purchase every day. Buy a legion even if it costs a bit extra.

The performance drop is not noticeable doing casual tasks on battery vs plugged in. Tried loading web pages and video playback. 4K 60fps video playback is smooth on both. 100% screen brightness definitely holds up in a well lit room. This is probably the best you'll get in this price range, most competition only offer 250 nit screens while this is a 300 nit screen.

Don't game on battery — you won't get enough power and sucking that much power from the battery and draining it this quickly will degrade it.

Based on the review, I will no more 'struggle' with choosing a new laptop from Lenovo. I got a bit scared — gonna carry on with my HP's. They have not failed me yet, and I have been happy with performances so far.

Yeah the laptop is top notch. Feels premium, the display is a treat. But the speakers really bug me because I don't have an external speaker right now so I can't watch anything with other people. Everything else is amazing.

As a computer repairer, the Lenovo Ideapad is probably the most faulty notebook to come across our stations. It always seems to be just out of warranty also. They're fine for a few years but do not rely on them to reach 3 and you may be pleasantly surprised when they do.

I have had an ideapad 5 for 3 years now, and i will never buy anything lenovo ever again. For a start, its been having various software issues for months. One time the audio stops working for weeks, now the hdmi just doesn't detect anything, and even updating/installing/reinstalling drivers/bios didn't help.

Bought mine almost three years ago (2 years 7 months). The right hinge/screen bezel snapped and the screen broke as a result. Went to get a repair and they said I'm better off buying a new one so womp womp. Just updating for anyone researching now!

About the screen part, there's 2 versions of it: one with TFT LCD which indeed the colors and contrast are pretty bad and another with an IPS screen — it's a world of difference. I highly recommend getting the IPS.

In my and my father's Ideapads, the plastic housing itself was so fragile that the hinge (which was actually good quality and was still intact) took a part of it when it snapped, rendering the corner basically destroyed. We managed to temporarily DIY some screws through the frame to keep the hinge in place.

I bought mine roughly 2 years ago and my hinge is just starting to crap out now. This is with regular daily usage since buying if that helps.

I have this model (with the i5-1135G7 and mx450). You can get 4-5 hrs of battery life at full brightness and moderate use. It can run most games at 1080p 60fps (I have run PUBG, GTA V, Doom Eternal, Witcher, Apex and Warzone). The keyboard feels awesome with tactile feedback. For normal college use I'd totally recommend this.

I bought a Lenovo Ideapad Slim 5 laptop in Aug 23, and I thought all is well until a few months in. My touchpad stopped functioning but thankfully, the onsite warranty allowed me to change my motherboard. A few months down the road, the same issue arose, and I was told by the customer hotline to undergo numerous upgrading of software, restarting of laptop, etc, and the touchpad would mysteriously function after months/weeks until it breaks down again.

I have a two-months-old Ideapad 5 15ABA7 which has exactly the same design as previous model and I'm worried about the hinge even though it comes with 3yr warranty.

Noise and heating is practically non existent with light use like browsing, content consumption, MS Office etc. Fans become audible while playing resident evil and the laptop gets warm quickly after a few minutes. The laptop has never gotten loud or hot even after gaming for 1-2 hrs. It doesn't get hot while charging either.

I received mine a couple days ago. I must say that the speaker is absolute dogshit. I can't hear anything with my fan on. Like a small keypad phone has a better speaker than this. And you're getting 7-8 hours in light usage? I'm getting max 5.

Screen quality is great, but for heavy use like gaming I wouldn't say its the best. It does have performance issues when I'm working on editing large video projects, it begins to lag. For an everyday laptop to do work, some light video editing, casual gaming, it's great.

I've seen many reviews saying about very poor hinges on the monitor — that they break 2-3 times a year without any physical impact. But that were pretty old reviews, did lenovo fix this problem in newer slim5 laptops?

The Nitro's display is 144Hz but at 250nits and 45% NTSC which means it's dim and less color accurate. The IdeaPad's is 350 nits 60Hz (some models are 120Hz as well) at 100% sRGB. Its color quality is miles better than the Nitro.

I have an IdeaPad 3i and the screws have literally started dropping out after a year, this is likely what causes the hinge problems as mine started creaking really badly until I replaced the missing screws and tightened the rest.

I'm currently using my Ideapad c340 as a daily driver and it runs normal since I bought it in 2019. Yes it's a plastic one and cracks are starting to appear but I guess aluminum Ideapads would be better built.

I got a Lenovo Ideapad Slim 5i at Costco recently, and after only a couple months I've decided to return it. It runs slower than my 11 year old desktop and it takes too long to load textbook PDFs.

I've got a S540 Intel version from 2019 and it runs perfectly and also upgraded to Win11 without a hitch — the thing is Thinkpad quality or even better!

I bought a hinge replacement non official on eBay by a famous replacement shop, installed it myself and it is a beauty. It works for many models — go search it like 'ideapad hinge 15IIL05'. Highly recommended rather than buying an entire new laptop.
