Summary

The Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 6 15 (2021) is a highly regarded gaming laptop that earned a strong reputation for delivering excellent value with its Ryzen 5/7 5000-series processors and RTX 3060 at 115–130W TDP. Reddit sentiment is broadly positive, with many owners reporting 3–4+ years of solid gaming performance with proper maintenance — regular repasting and fan cleaning are consistently credited for keeping the machine running like new. The laptop targets budget-conscious gamers who want real, uncapped GPU power without paying flagship prices. However, a documented motherboard solder defect has caused complete failures in a subset of 2021 units, typically surfacing after 3 years of use. Overall, it's viewed as one of the best gaming laptops of its generation, with the caveat that lottery-like hardware quality control leaves some owners frustrated.

Pros

  • RTX 3060 runs at full 115–130W TDP depending on config — a significant advantage over competitors that throttled GPU power to hit lower price points, resulting in noticeably better gaming performance
  • Excellent upgradeability: supports dual M.2 SSD slots (2242 and 2280) and two SO-DIMM RAM slots up to 32GB DDR4, letting owners expand storage and memory cheaply over time
  • Thermals hold up well with basic maintenance — owners who repaste annually and clean fans every 6 months consistently report GPU temps staying under 85°C even during extended gaming sessions years later
  • MUX switch via Lenovo Vantage (dGPU-only mode) eliminates iGPU bottleneck and improves gaming frame rates meaningfully in competitive titles
  • Strong Linux compatibility reported by multiple long-term owners — Fedora, Ubuntu, and Nobara all work well with the AMD GPU hybrid setup, making it a solid choice for developers who dual-boot
  • Chassis has aged well physically — users report minimal flex, solid hinges, and responsive keyboards even after 3–4 years of daily use

Cons

  • A known cold-solder defect on some 2021 motherboards causes complete GPU or system failure typically after 3 years — Reddit has multiple threads of owners facing black screens and dead units just outside warranty
  • RTX 3060 with only 6GB VRAM is increasingly limiting for modern AAA titles at higher settings — owners eyeing another 3–5 years of gaming should factor in VRAM constraints becoming a bottleneck
  • Battery life is poor even by gaming laptop standards — most owners report 4–5 hours max in hybrid mode with screen brightness managed, and under 2 hours during active gaming
  • The 120Hz panel variant has notably worse color accuracy and response times compared to the 165Hz model — buyers should specifically seek out the 165Hz display configuration to avoid this
  • No fan speed control in Lenovo Vantage — only three preset performance modes, which frustrates users who want fine-tuned thermal management without third-party tools like Legion Toolkit
  • End-of-life parts availability is a growing concern: Lenovo has signaled it will stop offering replacement batteries as the device exits official support, pushing owners toward third-party alternatives

How Long Will It Actually Last?

Most owners who maintain their Legion 5 Gen 6 — annual repaste with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut or PTM7950, bi-annual fan cleaning — report it still gaming strong at the 3–4 year mark. A subset aren't so lucky: the 2021 batch has a documented cold-solder issue that's taken out motherboards for a number of users right as warranties expired.

The Used Market's Most Recommended Gaming Laptop

Years after release, the Legion 5 Gen 6 keeps appearing in budget gaming laptop recommendation threads — and for good reason. The full-power RTX 3060, dual-channel RAM support, and upgradeable storage made it punch well above its original price point. Current-gen equivalents with comparable GPU performance cost significantly more.

Linux Users Quietly Love This Thing

While most gaming laptops struggle with Linux, the Legion 5 Gen 6's AMD CPU and MUX switch support have made it a favorite among Linux gamers running Fedora, Ubuntu, and Nobara. Multiple owners report idle temps actually lower on Linux than Windows, and hybrid GPU mode working reliably — a rare win for non-Windows users.

You will need another ram module, the single stick of 8GB will not cut it for most people. Overall this is a decent deal for a decent brand, minus the missing ram, and the fact it only has a 512ssd.

Do not leave any static screen on for more than a few minutes. I have had ghosting with even just a window being left on for 10 minutes at 60% brightness. It is ridiculous how much the OLED needs to be babied and maintained.

The downsides with this one are the screen and battery, the 120hz panel is much worse than the 165hz panel, not just in refresh rate but colors and response times, and while it has a smaller battery which sometimes means extra space for a 2.5" SSD, this laptop simply doesn't have that.

They must be lying. The two battery models for this model 60Wh and 80Wh are still used on current gen legion 5s. You can definitely find replacement batteries.

Nice and helpful! On the drivers part I recently got my 7i and it said on the discord that the latest nvidia driver fixed most of the issues so I upgraded and am not having problems since.

almost 3 years since 2021, it still feels brand new even after 107 cycle counts of battery usage, 1tb ssd, 14gb ram

Got the same laptop, failed on me 4 weeks ago. Served me well while it lasted but I'm bummed out after dropping almost 2 grands for it to just fail 3 years later. Nevertheless I'm sticking with Legions

A lovely laptop. Enjoyed running Linux mint on it. Sadly, mine died last January.

So this hasn't been mentioned, but the current problems stem from a Quality control issue with cold soldered mother boards for a popular model made back in 2020/2021. I do agree with the sentiment, but Lenovo hasn't made a statement yet on this issue.

I'd steer clear of the 21 models, as they have had a lot of motherboard failures due to badly soldered CPUs.

I have the 2019 Y740 with i7 9750H and 2070 max q, upgraded to 32GB and 2TB SSD, runs like a champ, gets slightly hot under heavy load yet still keeps up with newer computers, you can get 5-8 years out if maintained, clean fans annually and repaste (which I have yet to do).

I'm planning on buying a laptop both for gaming and schoolwork. I would probably be using a laptop during class. My question is, would this laptop run quietly, if i only run a notetaking app and google chrome?

Extend your warranties! I don't normally do this but for some reason I decided to for my Legion. A few months later mine is now with Lenovo after cooking itself, luckily covered by the extended warranty.

I got my Legion 5 pro in 2021 for about £1,000 which is insane: Ryzen 7, 32GB RAM, RTX 3070 8GB. An AMD Legion 5 Pro with the same specs (though with a RTX 4070) is over £2,000 now. I mainly use it for music production but I do use it for gaming too. I'm still very happy with it and getting good gaming performance.

I really like my Legion 5 Pro, but I'm having the same problems that I saw it's quite common, my USB ports on the back doesn't work properly, apparently it's a hardware issue and ofc I don't have warranty anymore. Thinking about getting a desktop in the future, although laptops have their vantage, this type of problem doesn't make me feel comfortable about laptops anymore

I have the same rig but it has an amd ryzen 7 5800H processor, and its a beast of a chip paired with the 3060. I sadly don't expect to get a new laptop for another 5 ish years, I anyways only play a few selective triple A titles. hope it holds up well.

Yeah, using this one for almost 2 years as well, but mine is ryzen 5 5600H version. Absolutely amazing, and don't want to jinx, but think its going to live long if u clean and repaste it from time to time. Also after disabling ryzen's turbo boost in power management both cpu and gpu temps are only little higher than 80° on the very rare occasions. Really love it.

Nice! I have experienced the new legion model. The pro 5i comes with some keyboard lighting firmware issues.(Nothing Major). The robust performance still exists in it's DNA though. I couldn't find a better alternative to this Legion chain of laptops!

I've had mine for about 2 years now and it's always had issues with battery life. I'm into gaming but I don't really know anything about laptops. I will need the battery to work better for my schooling next year.

Mine went bad. It came stock with two ram sticks of a total of 16GB so running in dual channel. Suddenly black screen and no post. I took out one ram stick and it worked. I swapped it out with the other one. It worked. I put it back in it's og slot, no post. I put the other stick into the other slot too. Still no post. Conclusion: Ram slot damaged? Bios latest. All updates latest. Now I'm forced to buy a single stick of ram with higher GB.

As Linux user in the Legion 15ACH6H for a year now, this post is awesome even to this day! Linux gaming is also much better too now, idle temps also a bit better (compared to windows) imo.

Bought my 5i in January as an upgrade thinking if I put more money down on a 'more reliable' laptop it would lead to less worrying. 10 months into using this rock of a laptop and it is completely out of commission. Went back to my old 300 dollar laptop of 5 years which is easily more reliable than this garbage. Will never buy another thing from Lenovo.

It really is a great laptop. Performance is excellent. I got the cheapest possible option with 3060 and 5800h. Added a cheapo second SSD and the least expensive 2x8GB x8 memory I could find. I have it hooked up to a 4k display and have been really surprised just how much power it has.

As long as you do it properly you should clean the fans. I clean mine with a soft paintbrush and compressed air. It won't completely clean it but its enough to stop it melting when I play warhammer 3 in the summer.

Mine just died a couple of weeks ago. 3 years I had it, purchased it back in October 2021. Total Black screen. I can hear the fans working, but nothing on the screen. Pretty sure its a dead graphics card. I tried all the troubleshooting procedures and while doing this, the screen was tearing pretty bad until finally nothing but blackness. I'm going to buy a new gaming laptop in the coming weeks, maybe another Lenovo, not sure yet. it worked pretty good while it lasted.

I'm looking at the 3070 variant and my only concern is: Can i charge the laptop with the Type-C port, enough to keep it running during light usage outdoors? I currently have the 2020 version (4800H, 1660ti) with the same chassis but Type-C port doesn't support Power delivery.

Battery life is what you'd expect (4 hours for me usually, but keeping the screen at full brightness and 165hz, hybrid mode) but not bad for gaming laptop standards. I've kept it in conservation mode at 60% charge most of the time since it's usually plugged in at my desk, so cycle count is low and degradation has been minimal.

Mine is again as well with a dead battery. 5800H and RTX 3060. Original stickers are gone and a minor crack. It's still alive. Hope it will serve me for years to come so I can save up for a proper pc build soon.

On December 30, 2025, the last thing my 15ACH6H showed was a frozen Solidworks image, resembling an ancient map. After that, only a black screen whenever I turned it on. Disconnecting the battery or BIOS, or holding the power button for 60 seconds, didn't help. Six months after the warranty expired... repairs will cost half the price of the laptop.

I have a 4070 and it's been great. Even under highly demanding games like DCS, with a custom fan curve and good ventilation the CPU and GPU barely see 70°C while I get around 120FPS on a 3440x1440 display on mostly high settings.

Mine is reaching four years on May this year. It's my first Windows laptop after 9 years using a Macbook Pro. Since getting it, I've always put the battery in conservation mode. To date, it has around only 7% degradation. I recently detached the fan and the heatsink for a deep clean and repasting. My thermals now went down from 90/86 CPU GPU to 65-72 on load, and 50-40 idle. However, all the rear USB-A ports have lost data/device recognition (but still charges). It's a fantastic mid-range laptop
