Summary

The LG gram 14 (2023) is a well-regarded ultraportable laptop that earns strong loyalty from frequent travelers, students, and professionals who prioritize weight above all else. Reddit sentiment is generally positive, with users repeatedly praising its near-unbelievable lightness and solid build for a non-metal chassis. Thermal management is the main sticking point — the single-fan cooling design inherited from earlier generations means sustained workloads lead to throttling, though casual and office use is mostly unaffected. Linux compatibility is a pleasant surprise for those who try it, with most distros working out of the box. It sits in an awkward value position where the base 8GB model feels underpowered for the asking price, but the right configuration at the right discount makes it a compelling pick for the weight-conscious crowd.

Pros

  • Feather-light build that genuinely surprises people — users describe it as 'insanely lightweight' and note even large 17" models feel lighter than 13" competitors from other brands
  • Solid Linux compatibility: keyboard, touchpad, audio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, power modes, and suspend/resume all work out of the box on NixOS, Manjaro, Ubuntu, and Fedora
  • PWM-free IPS display with 99% DCI-P3 coverage makes it a standout for users sensitive to screen flicker or who need color accuracy
  • Two M.2 NVMe slots (PCIe 4 + PCIe 3) in a 14" chassis — a rarity at this size class that competing Thinkbooks and MacBooks don't match
  • Long-term durability earns repeat buyers: multiple users on their second or third Gram, with 5+ year old units still in daily use
  • Port selection praised compared to MacBooks and competing ultrabooks, including Thunderbolt 4 and USB-A on the same machine

Cons

  • Single-fan thermal design causes throttling under sustained load — the 12th/13th gen Intel chips with more cores overwhelmed the unchanged cooling solution, leading to significant performance loss during extended CPU-intensive tasks
  • Base 8GB RAM is soldered and underwhelming for the price; upgrading to 16GB or 32GB adds meaningful cost, with the 32GB config pushing past $1,500
  • Thunderbolt 4 ports have reported reliability issues — multiple users couldn't get docks, external monitors, or peripherals working, and LG support responses ranged from unhelpful to dismissive
  • No MUX switch on the discrete GPU model (Gram Pro with RTX 3050) means the dGPU can't connect directly to the display, severely limiting its gaming utility despite the added cost and heat
  • LG customer support and bloatware apps are consistently called out as weak points, with warranty repair experiences described as frustrating
  • Competitive pressure from AMD-based ultrabooks and Apple Silicon makes the Intel-only lineup harder to recommend on efficiency grounds, especially for battery-intensive workloads

Linux Users Are Pleasantly Shocked

Unlike most Windows-first ultrabooks, the LG gram 14 2023 has near-perfect Linux support out of the box. Users report full hardware compatibility on NixOS, Manjaro, Ubuntu, and Fedora — including suspend/resume, power modes, and audio — with no manual driver patching required.

The Weight Is Real, But So Is the Thermal Ceiling

The gram 14's sub-1kg weight is genuinely impressive and hard to match at this screen size, but it comes with a cooling compromise. The single-fan design throttles under sustained load, and Reddit is split on whether that's an acceptable trade-off for portability or a dealbreaker for anyone doing more than office work.

Thunderbolt 4 Ports That Don't Always Thunderbolt

A recurring complaint specific to the 2023 gram line: Thunderbolt 4 docks and hubs frequently fail to deliver video output, with LG support in some cases suggesting this isn't guaranteed behavior. For users who rely on a single-cable desk setup, this is a serious caveat worth verifying before buying.

What other 16-17 inch laptops are out there with this battery life, lunar lake and this light? Doesn't seem to be any alternatives if these are your priorities. I'm tired of carrying 13-14 inch bricks on vacations, my back is thankful to LG gram.

Absolutely. Very large screen while being lighter than the lightest 13" MacBook, good performance, good battery life, a numpad, and PORTS.

Dual slots for SSDs is also rare.

Best computer purchase I've ever made. I'm a frequent business traveller and am so grateful my computer is so light when I'm walking through the airport terminal or standing in line to deplane.

Yes. I have had the 2022 and 2023 models, most recently the 17ZB90R-K.AAC7U1 with zero flicker. There's no visible PWM to me. The screen is bright and clear with good viewing angles. You can find that model for $650ish open box on eBay.

My dad just bought an LG gram cause it met his requirements. Nice big screen, light, decent battery, 2 SSD slots. Can't have a brick when you travel a lot. He hates Apple so no MacBook. I read LG gram was overheating junk but I was surprised at the temps.

I did and the hardware and software have major issues: Fan constantly running with no heavy process running. Hangs and lags on video calls, due to extremely low video bitrate. And it's thicker and heavier than the previous generation. LG really ruined a good product for me.

Linux works perfectly (manjaro) on mine, I've installed Ubuntu on it but Manjaro is better (Manjaro is lighter than Ubuntu). I use it everyday for my job and it's perfect for me. PC: LG Gram Style 14 i7 1360p + 32 Go DDR5 + 1TO SSD

I have the 2022 model (16Z90Q) that I use for work and it's screen is eye friendly for me. Other people at my work use the 2023 model and when I view their screens I also don't have any eye strain or headaches.

I have a 2020 Gram 17" and upgraded to a new 2023 17" with the RTX 3050 4 months ago. No heat issues with either.

The new units have zero specs on screen brightness and are over priced. My current i7 11 gen is well used, worn and still going strong. I am looking for an identical used unit. I am very happy with performance. I used to be a Thinkpad fanboy but became as mediocre as every other computer at a much higher price.

Looks great! Keyboard, touchpad, audio, wifi, bluetooth, brightness controls, power modes, suspend/resume and camera all worked right away. I used the nixos installer but I guess it will be the same with other distros.

I am pretty happy with this one. The light weight is amazing. Aluminium notebooks are noticeably heavier. The material feels great. I like that it is not cool to the touch. The build quality overall is great. Linux support is great. I did not have any issues. The speakers are fine in principle, but I really don't like that they are facing downwards.

Trust me, when I say that there are slim to none other 14" laptop with two full bandwidth m.2 slots. That would be maybe e.g. a heavy Thinkbook 14+, which isn't even sold internationally.

I have a Gram 14 i5 from 2020 that still works perfectly and has never shut down due to overheating. It definitely doesn't have the best thermals, it could get pretty hot with some indie games, but has never shut down. 5.5 years in I love it.

Yeah, my Thunderbolt ports have no video either. Sent it in for repair which is completely pointless as it did not fix the problem and was returned with several large gouges in the paint. Called again and spoke to some condescending asshole who said I had to pay extra for the Thunderbolt 'feature' even though it is on their and BestBuy's website where it was purchased from.

It seems to specifically be Thunderbolt, so I'm thinking more driver/bios issues. I contacted LG and their response was to not expect it to work with Thunderbolt 4 docks or hubs. It's a 50/50 and it's not designed for that. Like, wtf. It's a modern Ultrabook with two thunderbolt 4 ports and a single USB A. It's LITERALLY designed to make use of Thunderbolt. So that was no help at all.

No, and for a stupid reason. I still want a fingerprint scanner, not facial one. I'm already touching the power button, and the fingerprint sensor on my 11th gen is instant plus logs the print until the computer actually starts. Works every time. I'm actually looking at Lenovo for when I upgrade next year. Shame too. I got to really, really loving this, my second Gram. Even the mechanical scissor switches came to be a favorite keyboard.

I've had my Gram for 3 years. Wonderful keyboard and screen, very light and practical, battery is excellent at around 8 hours. It's a pleasure to use and it looks stylish. I'm sold on replacing my Gram with a Gram, subject to a competitive price.

I did buy one just last month, it's light weight, slim, decent performance for typical office type stuff, and it was on sale. I wouldn't expect it to perform like my 4080 laptop, but it also doesn't weight 10lbs. I haven't had it long, but it's been worth it so far.

Got the 2022 17inch 12th gen model. If it was today I would buy it all over again. It's super light, battery lasts forever, keyboard was a bit weird to get used to it, but now I love it. I just throw it in my backpack, go for a hike or whatever, sit down and work in the most beautiful places.

LG Gram Style 16 here (white, i7 32gb). I need a light notebook as I have prosthetic elbows, the weight is the most important thing for me. I would buy again for sure. My only complaint is no USB-C on right side, forcing me to charge on left side which is not ideal for my setup.

LG Gram Style 16. I love it. A 3200x2000 resolution 120hz 16" OLED panel in a <3lb laptop is insane. Especially because I got it for $800. Sadly, the white paint has started coming off in about five different spots which is kind of unsightly. LG support said it was my fault which is a joke.

My 17'' is so large and light it effectively replaced my desktop. I use it daily for everything except for more demanding games, which I am not into really.

I have 14" using with Win 11, Ubuntu 22.04, Fedora 40. All three work great. Gets super hot in one spot close to monitor top of F keys but it doesn't affect touch typing. 2 lbs laptop king with amazing screen and keyboard.

A reminder that Intel from 2021 to 2022 switched from 4 core processors to 12. Bad thermal efficiency from Intel and LG was very lazy and did not upgrade the cooling from one fan to two fans. So most of the 2022-23 models thermal throttle badly and cannot come anywhere close to the processor's potential.

I have a 2022 14" gram and it was getting quite hot doing basic web browsing tasks that it worried me. Using software like Photoshop CS6 or Ableton live for basic audio editing or lots of browser tabs definitely made it approach what felt like future danger territory. It felt like it didn't have much life left unless used minimally.

Mine (2023) overheats (but doesn't shut down, it is just really hot) only if I choose to/accidentally put it into max mode (f7).

I like mine except for the overheating issue. I bought a USB laptop cooler so when I use it at my desk it doesn't overheat and go into almost a limp mode. (Starts acting like a 386 processor from the early 90's). With the cooling fan it works great.

I have the Costco 2023 LG Gram Pro. It will be my last. The 3060 I paid for has no mux switch, and as a result is effectively useless. Their support has admitted this. It's false advertising to have a discrete GPU that cannot connect to a display directly. I'm pissed. I'm done with them.

I have owned two Grams, a 16 and a 17. Keyboards failed in both of them, and I don't intend to buy another. The Gram's great strength, its light weight, is also its greatest weakness: the construction is flimsy. Makes me sad.

Same issue here. I got a new thunderbolt 5 hub, and my LG gram has 2 thunderbolt 4 ports. My hub is backwards compatible and works on my 3 year old MacBook Pro M1 Pro. My LG gram isn't working for video via the hub but it charges and the other USB cable works for my wireless mouse. LG sucks lol.

It's an LG gram. Battery life is pretty fair (slightly below average from my experience). The poor cooling may not affect you depending on what you will use this laptop for. If you are doing intensive tasks on it, you should look for one with a better cooling solution. It's hard for this laptop to have a good cooling solution because it is incredibly thin and light.

LG Gram is at the top of my list but the price and lack of an AMD option are giving me pause. I can get over the price because all laptops are likely going to get expensive next year but the Intel processor's power usage is bugging me.

I haven't even been able to get my Gram Style 16 to run hot. I'm doing a lot of programming on it, building, debugging, and hot reloading are power intensive, but mostly in short bursts. It's an amazing laptop. Probably the worst touch pad ever made, and I still love it in spite of that.
