Summary

The LG gram 16 (2024) earns consistent praise from Reddit as the go-to ultralight laptop for frequent travelers and productivity-focused users who refuse to compromise on screen size. At around 1.2 kg with a 16-inch 16:10 display, it occupies a near-unique niche that users say has no real Windows competition. Sentiment is broadly positive, with owners regularly vouching for its battery life, port selection, and dual SSD slot flexibility. However, the community is clear that this is a productivity machine first — the included RTX 3050 (in Pro models) is heavily TDP-limited and draws criticism for offering dGPU heat and power drain without meaningful gaming performance. Thunderbolt dock compatibility issues and thermal throttling under sustained loads are recurring complaints that prospective buyers should weigh carefully.

Pros

  • Exceptional weight-to-screen-size ratio — roughly 1.2 kg for a 16-inch 16:10 display, a combination that Reddit users say has virtually no Windows rivals
  • Dual M.2 NVMe SSD slots allow future storage upgrades, a rare feature at this form factor that users frequently cite as a key differentiator over MacBook Air and competing ultrabooks
  • Strong battery life for Windows laptops — users report 8–10 hours of real-world office use, with the Lunar Lake models (non-Pro) hitting upwards of 20 hours in benchmarks
  • Generous port selection including multiple USB-C/Thunderbolt ports plus full-size USB-A, reducing dongle dependency compared to MacBook-class competitors
  • The Pro model's OLED display with 120 Hz refresh rate and 99%+ DCI-P3 coverage is praised for color accuracy and clarity, making it a strong pick for content review and general productivity
  • Low fan noise and manageable thermals under everyday workloads — the Lunar Lake chip generation is noted as a significant improvement in sustained efficiency over previous Intel generations

Cons

  • Severe thermal throttling under sustained CPU loads — sustained performance hovers around 12–15W TDP, making Cinebench R23 scores as low as 5,000–8,000 points on the base model, far below what the Core Ultra 7 155H can deliver elsewhere
  • The RTX 3050 in Pro models is power-limited to a combined ~55W CPU+GPU TDP, yielding a 3DMark Time Spy Graphics score around 3,800 — roughly 30% below a full-power RTX 3050 in a gaming laptop, making it ineffective for gaming or GPU-accelerated workloads
  • Thunderbolt dock display output does not work reliably — multiple business users report returning units after Thunderbolt docks failed to output to external displays, with LG support confirming this is 'not officially supported'
  • RAM is fully soldered with no upgrade path; only storage is user-upgradable, limiting long-term flexibility for users who need more than the base 16 GB or 32 GB configurations
  • Intel-only lineup draws criticism from users who prefer AMD for power efficiency and integrated GPU performance; the lack of a Ryzen option is a frequent dealbreaker in comparison threads
  • Premium pricing is a consistent pain point — users repeatedly note that sale pricing (Costco, LG direct) is often the only way to get competitive value, and at MSRP the MacBook Air or gaming alternatives offer better performance per dollar

The Thunderbolt Dock Problem Nobody Mentions in Reviews

Business users have reported that LG gram 16 (2024) units equipped with Thunderbolt 4 fail to output to external displays through Thunderbolt docks — and LG support has acknowledged it's not officially supported. For office workers who rely on a single-cable desk setup, this is a serious workflow-breaker that professional reviewers rarely flag.

Is the RTX 3050 Actually Useful in the gram Pro?

Reddit's verdict is largely no — not for gaming or GPU-accelerated tasks. The gram Pro's RTX 3050 operates at a heavily restricted TDP, producing benchmark scores well below a standard gaming laptop with the same GPU. Most users say the dGPU adds heat and battery drain without delivering meaningful performance gains over a well-tuned iGPU.

The Only 16" Windows Laptop Frequent Flyers Actually Love

For users who need a large screen but can't stomach the weight of a gaming or workstation laptop, the gram 16 has a near-monopoly on Reddit recommendations. Multiple users describe it as the only Windows laptop where 16 inches and under 1.3 kg coexist — and say that once you've traveled with it, every other laptop feels like a brick.

What other 16-17 inch laptops are out there with this battery life, Lunar Lake and this light? Doesn't seem to be any alternatives if these are your priorities. I'm tired of carrying 13-14 inch bricks on vacations, my back is thankful to LG gram.

Absolutely. Very large screen while being lighter than the lightest 13" MacBook, good performance, good battery life, a numpad, and PORTS. I'm actually looking forward to the next generation with hopefully better performance with Tiger Lake and the 50 series Nvidia GPUs.

That's not a gaming laptop.

I use it for most of my clients. It is pretty darn good - nothing is perfect but currently it is my goto recommendation. Next year that might change. Most of my clients are execs and they are kind of like American Psycho in the conference room - who has the lightest laptop - then comes the thinnest, then the other items. Make sure to get the 4 year accidental damage.

55W combined TDP for CPU and GPU, not even 3800 Timespy Graphics score. Looks good, great display, great speakers but terrible for gaming.

Best computer purchase I've ever made. I'm a frequent business traveller and am so grateful my computer is so light when I'm walking through the airport terminal or standing in line to deplane.

My dad just bought an LG gram because it met his requirements: nice big screen, light, decent battery, 2 SSD slots. Can't have a brick when you travel a lot. He hates Apple so no MacBook. I read LG gram was overheating junk but I was surprised at the temps.

The new units have zero specs on screen brightness and are overpriced. My current i7 11 gen is well used, worn and still going strong. I am looking for an identical used unit. I am very happy with performance.

No. I did and the hardware and software have major issues: 1. Fan constantly running with no heavy process running. 2. Hangs and lags on video calls, due to extremely low video bitrate. 3. Thicker and heavier than the previous generation. LG really ruined a good product for me.

If you need Cinebench high performance get the Pro with the RTX GPU version, it has a dual fan cooling. LG names Pro also some versions without the RTX GPU, but there were no reviews and not certain of dual fan in these versions.

I recently bought a 17" LG gram. Love how light and large the screen was. Didn't like the sound (sound muffle) and the keyboard felt cheap. It boot up quick and was fast. Did end up returning it and got the Lenovo 9i 16" 3k screen.

The new tb4 lg gram laptops didn't work with docks in our experience anymore. We had to return about 15 of them so far.

I mean thunderbolt docks that connect peripherals and output to a display. Specifically the display out doesn't work across all docks and LG support official word is that it isn't officially supported. In a business environment it's very common to come to the office and plug in your laptop to the dock at your desk for larger screens and this no longer works. TB4 should support it.

Because it tries to be a MacBook not a gaming laptop. If all you do is very light gaming and 98% media and web then it's an option for sure.

The 16" model without dGPU now has dual fan cooling, improved speakers, 144Hz display, while keeping the 2nd SSD slot and incredible 20h battery runtimes with Lunar Lake. It's perfect when bought on discount. I just wish it had a fingerprint scanner instead of face recognition.

No, and for a stupid reason. I still want a fingerprint scanner, not a facial one. I'm already touching the power button, and the fingerprint sensor on my 11th gen is instant plus logs the print until the computer actually starts. Works every time. I'm actually looking at Lenovo for when I upgrade next year.

CPUs on the Gram lineup are limited heavily. I would believe the lower score one. Sustained performance is around 12W-15W, you can guess the performance.

I don't think modding the Gram is that popular because the lid's too thin to act as a heatsink. It'll heat up too quick and then the CPU will throttle as usual. The most common changes I've seen are just repasting the CPU or taping up the gap between the fan and the heatpipe.

I just got the 16T90SP model of the Gram Pro 16 through Costco. Currently troubleshooting why the 2 extended screens through USB-C KVM switch just stop working after about 2 hrs. Everything reverts to the main display, computer function is fine, network, keyboard, mouse and sound continue to function through KVM, everything switches to old laptop just fine.

After 4 years with the LG Gram 16z90p, I find it incomparable to any other laptop in the market. The truth is that after using a 16" 16:10 laptop at 1.2 kg, everything else seems small and/or heavy. This has changed how, where and when I use the laptop, which means any other laptop would need me to rethink that. No other that I have found offers the following 3 things in one: 1.2 kg weight, 16" 16:10 aspect ratio screen, high performance.

Laptops need cooling. A lightweight like that will run the components at low power levels to survive.

I have the Costco 2023 LG Gram Pro. It will be my last. The 3060 I paid for has no mux switch, and as a result is effectively useless. Their support has admitted this. It's false advertising to have a discrete GPU that cannot connect to a display directly. I'm pissed. I'm done with them.

I've had my Gram for 3 years. Wonderful keyboard and screen, very light and practical, battery is excellent at around 8 hours. It's a pleasure to use and it looks stylish. I'm sold on replacing my Gram with a Gram, subject to a competitive price.

I like mine except for the overheating issue. I bought a USB laptop cooler so when I use it at my desk it doesn't overheat and go into almost a limp mode. With the cooling fan it works great.

I have owned two Grams, a 16 and a 17. Keyboards failed in both of them, and I don't intend to buy another. The Gram's great strength, its light weight, is also its greatest weakness: the construction is flimsy. Makes me sad.

LG Gram Style 16 here (white, i7 32gb). I need a light notebook as I have prosthetic elbows, the weight is the most important thing for me. I would buy again for sure. My only complaint is no USB-C on right side, forcing me to charge on left side which is not ideal for my setup.

Got the 2022 17inch 12th gen model. If it was today I would buy it all over again. It's super light, battery lasts forever, keyboard was a bit weird to get used to it, but now I love it. I just throw it in my backpack, go for a hike or whatever, sit down and work in the most beautiful places. There's no other option for me.

I did buy one just last month, it's lightweight, slim, decent performance for typical office type stuff, and it was on sale. I wouldn't expect it to perform like my 4080 laptop, but it also doesn't weigh 10lbs. I haven't had it long, but it's been worth it so far.

LG Gram Style 16. I love it. A 3200x2000 resolution 120hz 16" OLED panel in a <3lb laptop is insane. Especially because I got it for $800. Sadly, the white paint has started coming off in about five different spots which is kind of unsightly. LG support said it was my fault which is a joke.

The previous year model had some flex to the chassis. The problem with the performance is they throttle so fast when under load to accommodate the slim chassis. One thing I like is the lack of bloatware they ship with and their power profiles are very efficient in comparison to other companies.

It feels like I really have to go out of my way just to get the fans to kick on, and even under a full synthetic load I wouldn't say the deck gets uncomfortably hot. The bloat is there, but not in huge volumes unlike with other device manufacturers.

About a year and a half ago I got an earlier version (17", RTX 2050) and was blown away by how light it was and how nicely it fit in my backpack while travelling but despite the amazing specs the performance was so terrible it was actually worse than my surface tablet, mostly because the GPU was running insanely hot. I couldn't run any games, nor could I even stream just chatting while using Chrome at the same time.

Just bought the LG Gram 16 2025 in the UK. The graphics performance is insanely good for what this is. 16" screen, ultralight, yet can play games! Oblivion remastered, Clair Obscur, Ghost of Tsushima, God of War - all working at low resolution.

Managed to snag the non pro version for £500 brand new. I wanted the higher Hz screen but at that price it was a no-brainer. It's replaced my Dell XPS 9310.

The MacBook is the better laptop in most cases, slightly better at the things you find important. But I would say that the Gram comes pretty close for a lot less. So if money is no object, MacBook. Especially when it comes to durability, longevity and battery life.

The MacBook Pro is not comparable in power and battery life. The MacBook keeps its value better. If you don't game and don't have specific Windows software needs, you should get the MacBook. The Gram has 2 accessible SSD slots — you can even install 2x4GB SSDs in the future.

MacBook battery is much better. Windows is limited, for Office work you can get 10hrs with the Gram, I think you will get at least 50% more with the Mac. I was in the same room recently working together with a friend using similar software, after 4hrs my Gram needed the charger, his MBP had more than 50% remaining.

I ended up getting the Gram because of the price difference. I got mine refurbished for around $1200, with the same specs but 2TB of storage instead. I'm still getting enough battery life for a full day of work and light gaming.

I went with the new 2024 LG gram and got the loaded Core Ultra 7 155H, 16" 2 in 1 touch screen with 2TB and 32GB RAM. Even with the 32GB of RAM and 2TB of SSD, I can load it down — like you, I usually have 30+ tabs open at the same time on multiple browsers concurrently.

LG Gram is at the top of my list but the price and lack of an AMD option are giving me pause. I can get over the price because all laptops are likely going to get expensive, but the Intel processor's power usage is bugging me.
