Summary

The LG gram 17 (2021) has earned a solid reputation among Reddit users as one of the best ultrabooks for anyone who needs a large screen in a featherlight chassis. Owners consistently praise its extraordinary weight for a 17-inch laptop, with most agreeing there's simply no real competitor at that form factor and portability combination. It's best suited for productivity-focused users — web browsing, office work, video calls, and light multitasking — rather than power users or gamers. Sentiment skews positive overall, though a recurring theme of thermal throttling and driver quirks keeps it from being universally loved. Long-term owners report the machine holds up well after multiple years of daily use.

Pros

  • Unmatched weight-to-screen-size ratio: at roughly 3 lbs for a 17-inch laptop, no competing option comes close, making it genuinely backpack-friendly for daily commuters and travelers
  • Beautiful WQXGA (2560x1600) 16:10 display with 99% DCI-P3 coverage that users describe as 'absolutely gorgeous' — a standout even among premium ultrabooks
  • 80Wh battery delivers all-day life for typical office workloads, with owners reporting 6+ hours of real use and minimal degradation even after years of ownership
  • Solid build quality using magnesium-alloy construction that passes MIL-STD tests — users coming from plastic laptops consistently note how premium it feels in hand
  • Two M.2 NVMe slots (PCIe 4.0 on the 17Z90P) with upgradeable SSD storage, giving users the ability to expand capacity without replacing the whole machine
  • Thunderbolt 4 support enables flexible docking and display setups, useful for users who need to connect to external monitors or peripherals

Cons

  • Thermal throttling is a documented issue under sustained load — the single-fan iGPU configuration struggles with prolonged CPU-intensive tasks like large Excel recalculations or screen sharing in video calls, requiring users to manually set cooling to 'High' in LG Smart Assistant to unlock real performance
  • Speakers are underwhelming: down-firing drivers produce low volume and mediocre quality, clearly behind MacBook or HP Spectre in the same price range
  • Touchpad reliability complaints appear across multiple threads — users report unresponsiveness to small movements and finicky right-click behavior, especially fresh out of the box
  • Audio driver failures after clean Windows reinstalls have affected multiple owners, with no simple fix and sometimes requiring OEM recovery images — a frustrating experience for power users
  • LG's warranty repair service is notoriously slow, with multiple users reporting 1–2 month turnaround times and parts availability issues — a serious concern if the machine fails
  • At $1,500+ USD at launch, the quad-core Intel 11th Gen CPU drew criticism as underpowered for the price, with users noting that newer generations offer significantly better multi-core performance for less money

Years Later, Owners Still Recommend It — With One Caveat

Long-term users who bought the 2021 model are still happy with their purchase and would buy it again, but nearly all of them mention the same thing: you need to enable 'High' cooling mode in LG Smart Assistant, or you're leaving significant performance on the table. Out of the box, it throttles more than it should.

Is There Any Other 17-Inch Laptop This Light? Reddit Says No.

Across every thread comparing the Gram 17 to alternatives, users consistently hit the same wall: nothing else at 17 inches is anywhere near this weight. Zenbooks, Dell XPS, HP Spectres — they either max out at 16 inches or add significant bulk. For people who need the screen real estate and still want to carry it daily, the Gram is effectively the only option.

Don't Try a Clean Windows Reinstall Without Backing Up Your Drivers First

Multiple owners discovered the hard way that a fresh Windows install breaks audio, touchpad, brightness control, and battery life on this machine. LG doesn't make drivers easy to find, and some users spent days troubleshooting. If you get one, keep the OEM partition intact or back up all drivers before doing anything to the OS.

After my LG G4 bricked itself due to low quality materials and LG refusing to replace it although it was still under warranty, I swore I'll never buy an LG device again. I hope they've started to use better quality materials for their hardware.

I have both the 2021 and 2022 LG Gram 17. I don't know why most reviews always miss this, but you need to set the cooling mode to 'High' in LG Smart Assistant. It nearly doubles / triples your performance. This thing is amazing at 3 lbs, there is simply no other 17 inch laptop out there at that weight.

Looks amazing, wish I could get a 16 without an awful numpad.

Got the 17 inch i7 1tb version a couple of days ago from Amazon after many, many hours of research. It's just great, absolutely fantastic. A little disappointed I'm limited but overall it's an amazing machine.

I find it snappy and very responsive. I am an average user, where mostly I am browsing Reddit, YouTube and some work on Excel. It fits perfectly for my needs.

As for heating and throttling, NVIDIA dGPU version has better, dual-fan cooling system, comparing to single-fan in iGPU versions. And I'm happy with mine LG gram 16 2022/dGPU. I use LG's 'Cooling Mode' set to 'High'.

I bought both the 14" LG Gram 2021 for home and the 17" model for work. They are delightful Ultrabooks with big and bright screens, nice keyboards and the latest Intel package.

I just picked up the Gram 16 as well. I think the speakers are adequate. They are down firing, but produce a stronger sound than some laptops with side or up firing speakers I've tried recently (Razer Book 13, Galaxy Book Flex 15). They aren't as good as a Macbook or even the new Spectre line, but I'm really not complaining.

I have a 2021 gram 17 and it does lag when doing intense excel calculation. Also opening files with million+ rows freezes the program (not the system).

I bought LG Gram 16 2021, I was apprehensive of heat produced by intel 12th Gen CPUs. I like Gram 2021. Only issue I have is with touchpad which is slightly unreliable. Fails to catch some taps.

Yeah touchpad is my only issue. Takes a lot of force for right clicks if your right thumb is resting on it. I can't wait for them to switch to haptics.

Even though I think this is one beautiful laptop, the quad core intel cpu in 2021 for 1500 its just ridiculous.

The screen is absolutely gorgeous, the keyboard I need to get used to though, but overall is amazing.

Both are Lunar Lake, only 4 performance cores, the difference between the two models is minimal in performance, maybe graphics will be a bit more powerful with the Ultra 9. The size is the most significant difference.

The $999 model is obviously an upgrade and recommended. Keep in mind that RAM in these units are not upgradeable.

Having 32GB memory might be a good idea if you use lot of tabs.

Costco has the 2022 version on sale right now, got my 17" 16gb Ram and 512gb HD for $1099 before taxes and shipping ($400 off). Great deal compared to full price.

Don't think you will regret it, it looks and feels so premium. I had other laptops I was considering before buying this one, like spectre or Zenbook, I am sure those are good machines as well but this one stands up against them.

The last Gram I used was a 2019 which left me with some... not favorable opinions about the Gram line, so it was fascinating to see the newest model compared with a 2021 machine in great 1:1 detail. The improvements are real.

At those prices, you can get a S16 Zenbook with OLED HX370 for around 1k new if you find it for a deal.

It's not terribly slow, for average user more than enough but if you're a power user you'll hit its limit more than often. CPU is capable but it thermal throttles a lot. I don't work exclusively on Excel but my work includes some Excel and I do wish it was a little faster. In hindsight I would have bought a Lenovo legion 16 for the screen size and processing power.

Have 2022 17' since last November and definitely satisfied. Main use is MS Office, email, Internet research and teleconferences. Screen is gorgeous. Keyboard very good. Battery lasts full working day. My only complaint is random wake-up from sleep issues, where keyboard doesn't wake-up and I have to reboot it.

One area of concern for this laptop is the warranty/out-of-warranty support. If I have an issue and need to send the laptop for repair, I am concerned I will not have a device to use for longer than a week, while other manufacturers offer on-site diagnostics/repairs or fast repairs even when the device is shipped. I have heard 1 to 2 month repairs for LG laptops.

I bought the LG gram 17 2021 and it broke within a month. LG has taken nearly a month so far and still not repaired it. Their delivery for repairs is slow, and they don't have parts needed to repair laptops. They communicate well but that's useless when they offer poor underlying services. Until they improve the repair service and take responsibility for their products' failures appropriately, I won't be buying from them.

My experience using two different Grams over 6 years has been great. I've had no issues with the current model, and a family member is still using my old one from the review without any issues.

I have the 2017 17" model. The screen wobble is not that bad at all honestly. I never noticed it once. And I've heard the more recent models have even better build quality. The hinge on this thing is surprisingly good, when I compare it to other past laptops I've had.

Older processor and lower price doesn't = worse laptop. The 17Z90TL is the better laptop, more space, better components, better cooling and the processor is less on paper but more irl + you save. I got it myself and once I figured out how to properly update it the processor and fans have been pretty smooth, I love this thing!

Yeah its good choice but little pricier for the processor. But if your requirement is long screen with good battery life then LG gram is good choice.

That's a crazy difference. You can buy the 2021, wait a year, and buy a 2022 on clearance with the money you save.

Yes - the 17Z90P is PCIE4. The newer models are PCIE 4 (older ones are all PCIE3) according to notebookcheck.

Similarly I got stuck after trying a clean reinstall of Windows 11 on my model. After WiFi didn't work, I tried connecting my iphone to the laptop with a usb cable to provide a hotspot but that failed. Currently I'm stuck in the middle of the clean reinstall because it requires network connectivity for updates.

They both have 32gb of ram, way more than most people need. I'd say it's just about which size you prefer. I prefer 16 because it's the biggest size I can comfortably use a mouse next to, 17" is a bit too big.

Not at all, the black model has a matte finish so fingerprints are not an issue.

That's probably about right in CAD. Check ebay for comparison — lots of good ones available there if you look for specific models.

Last week I was watching some videos, and the pc stayed unplugged for about 5 hrs. The battery started at 95% and went down to about 70%. It likely would've lasted the entire day if needed.
