Summary

The Logitech M720 Triathlon has earned a devoted following among productivity users who run multiple devices, with many Reddit users reporting 4–6+ years of daily use. Sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with the core appeal being its three-device switching, comfortable mid-size ergonomics, and strong price-to-performance ratio compared to the MX Master line. It sits in a sweet spot for users who need multi-device functionality but find the MX Master series too large or expensive. The main recurring frustrations are the degrading rubberized coating and long-term switch reliability issues like double-clicking and failed drag-and-drop, which tend to appear after 2–4 years of heavy use.

Pros

  • Three-device switching (2 Bluetooth + 1 USB dongle) is seamless and widely praised — users call the dedicated channel button more accessible than anything on the MX Master series
  • Gesture button on the thumb provides deep customization via Logi Options+, including desktop switching, app launching, and gesture shortcuts — a feature many users only discovered years into ownership
  • Mid-size form factor fills a gap: smaller than the MX Master 3S but larger than travel mice, making it ideal for medium-to-large hands that find flagship Logitech mice too bulky
  • Horizontal scroll wheel tilt is useful for spreadsheets and design work, and the hyper-fast scroll mode adds versatility for long documents
  • Single AA battery delivers months of real-world use, and at ~$40 it undercuts the MX Master 4 by $80+ while covering most of the same productivity use cases
  • Users regularly report 4–6+ year lifespans with light-to-moderate use, and the mouse continues to attract repeat buyers even after failure

Cons

  • Rubberized coating degrades noticeably — peeling, stickiness, and bubbling reported within 1–2 years of heavy use; many users resort to Aliexpress skin stickers as a workaround
  • Left-click switch reliability drops after 2–4 years: double-clicking, missed clicks, and unreliable drag-and-drop are the most common failure modes across multiple threads
  • Fixed 1000 DPI with no in-software adjustment makes it unsuitable for high-refresh-rate or 4K workflows where precision tracking matters
  • Bluetooth wake-up delay of 3–4 seconds is noticeable when switching from sleep, and the dongle requires Logitech Unifying software to pair on a new PC — which has a history of driver conflicts
  • Logi Options/Options+ software is required to unlock gestures and button remapping but has a track record of crashes and installation failures on some systems
  • Right-click-only design excludes left-handed users entirely, and the color is limited to dark grey with no white or alternative colorway option

The Gesture Button Nobody Uses Until They Do

Multiple Reddit users admitted owning the M720 for 1–2 years before discovering the thumb gesture button — and immediately regretting not using it sooner. For Mac users especially, it's the feature that makes the mouse genuinely hard to replace.

Half the Price of MX Master, Most of the Value

At around $40, the M720 undercuts the MX Master 4 by $80+ and covers the same core use cases: multi-device switching, gesture control, and horizontal scrolling. Reddit consensus is that the upgrade to MX Master rarely feels worth the premium.

The Rubber Will Die. Buy It Anyway.

Peeling coating and double-click failures are near-universal complaints among long-term owners — yet many of those same users immediately bought another M720 when theirs died. It's a mouse people keep repurchasing despite its known flaws.

This is a great mouse for those of you who use multiple computers. It's definitely more for office work/general browsing but I'm a big fan of this one

This is my travel work mouse. Works great with Mac OS and Windows. I recommend it.

The M720 which I recently got as a hand-me-down is the most comfortable mouse that I've tried in a while for my hand size. I've got an MX Master 3S and find it just too big. I like the M720 so much that I bought two more on Amazon's Black Friday deals to use at the office and on my WFH machine.

I've bought multiple M720 mice either to replace the ones that don't work/lost or for backup. I love the ergonomic feel, the single battery lasts pretty long (altho not 2 years for me) and if you have different computers/laptops, you just need 1 mouse and it can switch between them. The scroll wheel also has a great feel and you can make it do the infinite scroll which can come in handy sometimes. The current one I have has been used so long that the plastic/rubber on the side is getting affected.

FYI I came across a version of this mouse called 'Logitech Productivity Plus' regularly priced for $27.99 in-store at Walmart. Only difference is it's 2.4 GHz USB receiver only, no second and third PC via Bluetooth. Besides only connecting to one PC at a time, they seem identical. Haven't even had to replace the batteries in over a year.

I bought both M720 and MX anywhere 3. I prefer to bring M720 with me. It can connect to both Mac and PC, more buttons than MX anywhere. Indeed MX anywhere has better build, but in terms of usability, M720 has a gesture button which allow you to customise even more. gesture up = open app, gesture left = switch app etc.

I also love the fact that the button to switch your connection is so easily accessible compared to the MX series. I am using an Mx Master 4 now, but I agree with the fact that this is one of the best value mice on the market.

I own all three models (MX Master 2S, 3S, M720), and based on my experience, the differences in size between the MX Master 2S and 3S are negligible, even though the specifications suggest otherwise. On the other hand, the M720 is noticeably smaller compared to the MX Master series.

Damn, I had one for 2 years and never realized it had a gesture button. I have a MX 3S now and needed to switch since the M720 was too small for my hand shape. But I feel bad now knowing I never used it.

I just bought an M720 Triathlon too, upgrading from an M585. After surveying the available models, none of them met my requirements for a smaller size. MX mice are great, but they are too huge for my hand. The only downside for M720 Triathlon is the rubberized surface. I have an oily palm, and it tends to destroy materials, so I don't think the rubberized surface will last.

I love the M720, but unfortunately don't have any recommendations for alternatives. I'm considering buying vinyl to wrap my 3 M720s to change up the color because the rubber texture has worn down.

I came to this page simply because i'm having a hard time justifying upgrading from my M720 because it's damn near perfect. I have it setup so that the gestures and buttons do everything I need (copy, paste, cut, forward, back, close window, enter) and it's the perfect size. I wish it was a little more premium, but i have a hard time paying $120 for the MX Master 4 that's potentially too big and heavy as well as the same 125hz polling.

It's a kickass mouse.. been using it for 4 years.. working without a hiccup. Can connect to 3 devices via Bluetooth with a click of a button. If you are gaming, avoid this. For productivity, I see no other mouse with this kind of value.

I picked up the MX Master 3S recently, but it only lasted a few hours before I went and bought another M720. You really can't beat the best—sticking with what works!

The mice are incredible. The ability to handle three devices is absolutely a godsend. And the best way to use them is with Eneloop batteries. It takes a couple of hours to recharge them, but they're good for months.

I have small hands and both the M720 and MX Anywhere 3. The M720 is an amazing mouse; it has perfect ratchet resistance for scrolling through large spreadsheets, side-to-side wheel tilt and solid build quality. It is fairly heavy though and the mouse feet are just mediocre.

I have the M720 and MX Master 3s, and agree with the fact that M720 is a smaller fit than MX 3s. The MX is a life changer, hard to use other device after it - have mine for over 3+ years and the only problem I had is the shell plastic is a little sticky (not a big deal).

Between my WFH workspaces at home and my office, I typically have 3 devices with me at all times; corporate laptop, client laptop, and personal device. While I do miss the side scrolling wheel of the Master, the side device switch button of the Triathlon is worth its weight in gold for me.

ive been using my for 6 years now, honestly best mouse ever. i love the left/right tilt buttons on the scroll wheel. too bad theyre not on the mx 3/4. but now after 6 years, i started having issues with it. double clicking, and when draging something, it lets go, which became very annoying. bought the mx master 3 for 100$, but didnt like it so i returned it. will buy the m720 again and for 40$, the decision cant get any easier.

I've now gone through two of the Logitech Triathlon (M720) within the last four years. The first one lasted about 3 years and then just disconnected one day and I could never reconnect it. This second one (had it for about a year) is still technically working, but the connection has become very poor, to the level that I need to replace it.

I bought one and it lasted for 4 years and started to have double click problem which all M720s have sooner or later. I bought a new one and only after one year I have the same problem. PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE.

I have 2 Logitech M720 and I'll never buy anything from Logitech. Both of them started having left mouse click and scroll malfunctions few months after warranty expired. Moreover, the rubber texture on the other one peeled off like a burnt skin. Mice that I used 20 years ago lasted much longer and were far cheaper.

Its a great value but the rubber/soft touch plastic coating is horrid. I also find the scroll wheel jumps a bit when I click down on it but that could be an issue with Linux not being tuned right. Logitech please provide first party Linux support!

I love the M720 to death, unfortunately the rubber made thumb button, the rubber has completely peeled off and the internal button has exposed, it is almost impossible to press that button so I'm not using that button anymore. Other than that problem the mouse works fine and I still love it.

I've used one for the last 5 years, and finally started double clicking on me. The one gripe I have is the material - It is terrible! It constantly feels sticky.

After buying my first M720 for my home office, I bought another one to use for work and recently I bought a used one since it was a very good deal to keep it as backup! My home one is more than five years old and still works. The only problem is the coating but I solved it by buying a sticker set from Aliexpress and covering it.

When we moved to LA I got my wife a M720 and 5 years later, it's still going strong! It's a great mouse even though I really like the Logitech MX Master 3s.

Nah, you'll notice the channel selector is closer to your middle of the thumb than the others, so you have to bend your thumb to get it…great mouse btw, mine's been going strong for 4 years now and it's awesome.

My work provided us with this mouse and it's been great, super good battery endurance. If you just want a simple, hassle-free mouse, this is it.

I use a M720 as a daily driver and it's amazing. The logitech software let you fully customize the buttons, and it looks more ergonomic than mx anywhere.

I've been using the M720 exclusively for the last 5 years or so - it's my 'go-to' mouse. That being said, I'm a 'light' gamer, and mostly use it for productivity. I wouldn't buy a different one at this point.

I've been heavily using the M720 for work since June 2020. The left mouse button started failing about 2-3 months ago. Symptoms were randomly dropping dragged windows or when selecting text. A bit of WD40 in the micro switch and it seems perfect again.

I love everything else but after 2yrs or so they all have some issue - response gets worse. I have 3 of the same ones now since I bought a new one everytime there is an issue but now that my 3rd one is starting to have issues, I don't know what to do...

Drag and drop is now 'Drag and drop randomly', click is 'sometimes no click, sometimes double click, sometimes so many clicks it turns into a select all'. I mean, OK, it's a really cool mouse, bluetooth, well designed, nice functions on macOS, but paying a reasonable amount to use for 2 years is stupid.
