Summary

The SteelSeries Aerox 9 Wireless is the go-to wireless MMO mouse for players tired of heavy, oversized options — at 89g it's a meaningful step down from the Naga Pro's 119g, and it's the only wireless 12-button mouse with scroll wheel tilt. Reddit sentiment is genuinely mixed: longtime fans love the shape and weight, but a persistent scroll wheel reliability issue shadows almost every long-term ownership thread. It suits MMO players with medium-to-large hands who can adapt to the button layout, but small-handed users and grip-changers frequently return it.

Pros

  • Lightest wireless 12-button MMO mouse available at 89g — roughly 30g lighter than the Razer Naga Pro, which many users cite as a decisive advantage for extended gaming sessions
  • Scroll wheel tilt (left/right) is a rare feature in this category; the Naga X lacks it entirely, making the Aerox 9 the only wireless option with this capability for users who rely on it
  • Modern ergonomic shape avoids the bulky ring-finger rest of older MMO mice — users describe it as feeling like a normal gaming mouse, which hits a wider audience than traditional brick-like MMO designs
  • Works reliably with both 2.4GHz dongle and Bluetooth; dongle mode offers noticeably better responsiveness for gaming while BT is fine for casual use
  • Can be used wired via USB-C, giving FPS players a zero-latency fallback when they don't want to use a 12-button mouse exclusively
  • Buttons 4–12 are accessible without grip changes for most users with average or larger hands — many MMO players adapt quickly and find the layout natural within a few days

Cons

  • Scroll wheel reliability is a documented design flaw — the open encoder accumulates dust, causing erratic scrolling (often registering down-scrolls as up) within weeks to months of use; cleaning helps temporarily but the problem returns
  • Buttons 1–3 are positioned too far forward for most grip styles, requiring a full grip change mid-game to reach them — a recurring complaint across dozens of threads from users of all hand sizes
  • Left click failures (crunchy feel, failure to register, drag-click noise) appear frequently enough that multiple users have gone through warranty replacements, suggesting a QC or component consistency issue
  • Battery life with RGB enabled drops to 10–15 hours; while disabling RGB improves this, users expect more from a premium wireless mouse at this price point
  • SteelSeries GG software has bugs: DPI defaults to the lowest preset on game launch, profile auto-switching doesn't work reliably, and modifier key combinations mapped to side buttons often fail to register
  • Priced at $150 at launch (now commonly found at $100–$120 on sale), it's hard to justify at full retail given the scroll wheel and QC concerns — most recommendations come with a 'wait for a sale' caveat

The Scroll Wheel Problem Won't Go Away

Across multiple threads spanning years, the Aerox 9's unsealed scroll encoder is a known failure point. Dust ingress causes erratic scrolling that cleaning only temporarily fixes, and SteelSeries' warranty process (requiring photos of a destroyed mouse) frustrates users further. Some have resorted to AliExpress replacement encoders.

Best MMO Mouse — If You Buy It on Sale

The Aerox 9 wins the wireless MMO category almost by default: it's the only 12-button option under 90g with scroll tilt. But at $150 MSRP, the reliability concerns make it hard to recommend. At $100–$120, the math changes, and most Reddit consensus lands there.

Large Hands Love It, Small Hands Return It

Users with larger hands frequently call it their best MMO mouse ever. Users with smaller hands or those coming from a Naga Pro often return it within days — the button grid's forward placement and height create thumb strain that takes significant grip adaptation or becomes a dealbreaker entirely.

Def picking this up to support this design. Need more modern mmo mice.

Seems like a damn good mmo mouse, really need to see more competition in the mmo mouse field. Maybe this will make logitech reboot the g600.

Excited but at $150 is very steep.

King of MMO by default. I don't know how many years we've been waiting for a decent shaped MMO mouse without the ring finger rest. Can't wait to get this now.

The mouse clicks are crisp and nice with little to no wobble. There is also little to no pre and post travel of the mouse clicks. If Glorious Model O and the Razer Deathadder made love, shape-wise this would be their child.

I played on a G604 I got for my office, just to fuck around, and holy mother of shit do I need a mouse like this in my life. The fact that I could bind so many things that would keep my fingers on WASD instead of on EFRDZXCQ, was insane, and JUST that QoL improvement had me playing on that mouse for like, a week, instead of going back to my usual.

Steelseries mice are solid build quality over the last couple years. They've made big leaps in build quality. Original aerox 3 was trash, and the old rival mice rubber grips were notorious for falling off. But the prime/prime wireless/prime mini and 2022 aerox 3 are all super solidly built.

How dirty do these honeycomb mice get? I feel like it's just going to be filled with dust and lint because my desk is so dusty even though I try and clean it once a month.

Good price for wireless, and there's not really many options there for 12 button MMO mice. By not a lot I mean it's either this one or a couple of Razer mice.

As much as I liked this mouse, I already had problems with my first and my replacement one, the mouse wheel is already having a problem after a few weeks of use, somehow slowly going up a bit after scrolling down is annoying, so hopefully you get good luck and not get the defective ones.

A month back the scroll started bugging out, when I scroll up it scrolls down every few ticks. Very annoying. The left click is clunky. It does click but it's like there's something stuck that makes it feel and sound weird. I'm getting a new one on the warranty soon. Hopefully this one was just bad from factory and next one isn't. Sad if it turns out the mouse is just poor quality by design at this pricing.

I had the Aerox 9 for a month and wound up returning it. The shape wasn't comfortable for me and the wobble on the right mouse button drove me crazy.

I'm happy with the mouse, but the software is dogshit. They had time to include screen recording and audio EQ (why?) but the mappings don't automatically change when you exit a game. And whenever you start a game, the DPI defaults to the lowest preset instead of the last one, so you really need to set only one DPI preset. And somehow all of my defaults got overwritten the first time I made another profile.

Didn't know this mouse existed. I may have just found my next mouse! I have been looking for a light wireless mouse with 12 side buttons!

It's a bit awkward at first and you will misspress the buttons a lot, but you will eventually get used to it, might take a few weeks till you're completely comfortable with it. I used these mmo mouses when i used to play wow, they were pretty useful.

I have already had 2 in 3 weeks with left click problems. It feels crunchy and if I press hard whilst drag clicking it makes a loud noise. Going to get another replacement but I think it just might be the mouse. It's a shame because I really like everything about this mouse.

I just got my Aerox 9 a couple of weeks ago, and I can say I prefer it over to my Corsair Scimitar Wireless. For most of the Aerox lineup, the RGB will cause the battery life to last around 10-15 hours on a brand new unit. Turning it off is recommended for long lasting charge.

Don't ever buy steelseries mice they're using a low end sensor for their wireless mice.

I have the Aerox 9, Naga, and ROG Chakram X. My ranking (for MMOs only not FPS): 1) Chakram X, 2) Aerox 9, 3) Naga. It's worth mentioning that none of them are perfect and imo they all have pretty serious drawbacks. I agree with the criticism of the Aerox 9's button layout. TBF I have to do thumb gymnastics on all 3...the Aerox is the worst, but I got used to it and it doesn't bother me anymore.

I am used to gripping my Naga in front of the 123 buttons and these are still too far forward. I could probably deal with it but the buttons are much harder to tell apart without looking and even harder to press. After a few hours I actually had hand cramps. Also not a fan of the keypad not having Backlit keys and there being no option of a charging dock.

I appreciate your review since I was heavily considering the Aerox 9 due to a sale (only $100 now) but seeing all the drawbacks listed here, especially the clicking issue, made me think twice. There's just very, VERY few gaming mice with a tilting scroll wheel, which is an absolute must for me.

Purchased the aerox 9 and I still think the g600, naga x, scimitar are all better. The aerox 9 is just so uncomfortable even with large hands. I can't get use to the awkward button layout on the side. The buttons are too small and pushed forward too much that you have to roll your thumb and readjust your hand position just to hit the 3 button at the top.

It seems like every major manufacturer with an MMO mouse currently on the market, even ones that have been around for over a decade, just don't think it's economically viable to make a mouse compatible in size and ergonomics with anything but a Sasquatch. This is the most common theme of complaint from reviews running for years now. This mouse would be excellent scaled back somewhere in between 10 to 20% in size.

I've been using the original aerox 9 for about 5 years now. Coming from the scimitar. The aerox 9 is by far the best mouse I've ever used. 10/10. Light Weight - Check. Comfortable - Check. Not ridiculously sized for a 12 button MMO mouse - Check. Short Charge time required - Check.

This was my favorite MMO mouse after trying basically all of them over the last 20 years. I liked it so much that I accidentally ended up with 2 and kept both anyway. 2 years later. Do NOT buy this absolute piece of shit. It actually sucks, because this is by far the best MMO mouse IMO for feeling good in my hand, and being so light weight. One mouse the 1 button started to not work half the time.

It's been about 3 months since I swapped to the Naga V2 Hyperspeed, and it personally feels much better.

The button on the Naga Pro means I don't have to change my grip. The Aerox 9 requires me to change my grip. I should NOT have to change my grip in the middle of a heated moment such as a raid just to hit a button in the 1-3 or 10-12 columns.

Previously I used wired very light weight (58g) gaming mouse. I liked that my aim got better with very low weight, but it had only few extra buttons so I got Aerox 9. Now I have used Aerox 9 for two years and I'm very happy using it. Weight is still very low 89g for a wireless mouse and my aim is good.

The mouse wheel is terrible. Had it for 2 months and now it scrolls the wrong direction 30% of the time. Getting to the bottom of a webpage is a daily struggle. It got to a point where I had to bind scroll up and scroll down to two buttons on the side instead of using the wheel, when playing games that use the scroll-wheel for game mechanics. Cleaning it reduces it from 30% to 2% for a few days, but then the issue returns.

If you come from a naga mmo then the aerox 9 will put you up fast lane. Beware though there are 2 known issues with this device and they are inherent on the design to fail rather than to stay working. First is the scrollwheel design is open so dust and moisture will ingress and eventually make the scrollwheel behave erratic or not at all.

I've used mine occasionally for two years and it died randomly over night. Seems it's quite common issue with the electronics, there is no solution for that and support does not help at all.

I have both the original Aerox 9 Wireless and the WoW Anniversary Edition. I like them a lot for MMOs or games like PoE2. That being said, when I'm browsing the internet or doing anything else at all, I switch back to my Rival 650. The scroll wheel seems to almost bounce back up when I'm scrolling. Kinda obnoxious, but not noticeable in games.

I have had mine for a year and a half, maybe two, and haven't had any of the issues I've seen online. After close to 1000 hours of FFXIV it's still going strong. I do swap to my prime wireless when I'm not playing an MMO simply because the Aerox 9 is so big but that's a personal preference.

It's nice, I did have to replace the scroll wheel with a new one that was sealed as I was doing manufacturing and it got dust in it, the buttons are a smidge too far forward for comfort when I got it but I've gotten used to it, overall I'm happy with it and am buying a second as a spare.

I returned the mouse for this exact reason, I had to constantly readjust my grip just to reach the 1-3 buttons. They are just way too far forward. The buttons are also extremely stiff for some reason.

I literally just bought one at Best Buy today and will be unfortunately returning it tomorrow. Buttons are wide in the wrong direction. They are too far forward. A little hard to press. I am actually super bummed.

I just tried it. What a horrible side button design. Can't reach the 2 and 3 buttons without changing your grip. Worthless mouse. Returning it. I think I'll just be happy with my G600 with the weights removed.

Not to revive old threads. But for someone with really big hands it's perfect. Naga for me is too small. This is perfect for people with big hands and big thumbs. I use glove size 10/11 if you want reference of size.
