Summary

The Asus ROG Strix OLED XG27AQWMG is a 4th-gen Tandem WOLED gaming monitor that generates genuinely split opinions on Reddit — not because it's bad, but because panel lottery is real and expectations around OLED vary wildly. Owners who won the panel lottery consistently praise the glossy TrueBlack coating, the deep contrast, and the significant visual step up from IPS and VA panels. The grey banding issue is the main flashpoint: some units ship with noticeable vertical banding, and while many users report it improving or disappearing after pixel refresh cycles, others with 100+ hours and 100+ refreshes saw zero improvement. For FPS gaming and HDR content, satisfied owners call it one of the best 1440p options available; for dark-mode productivity, slow-paced games with grey skies, or users sensitive to PWM flicker, it comes with real caveats worth knowing.

Pros

  • 4th-gen Tandem WOLED delivers significantly higher peak brightness (~1500 nits) compared to previous WOLED generations and QD-OLED alternatives, making HDR content genuinely impactful even in lit rooms
  • TrueBlack glossy coating provides deeper blacks and richer perceived contrast than matte panels — owners consistently describe the visual upgrade from IPS as dramatic, especially for HDR gaming and movies
  • 280Hz refresh rate combined with near-instant OLED pixel response makes it an excellent pick for fast-paced FPS games like CS2 and Valorant where motion clarity matters
  • HDMI 2.1 support allows full 1440p 280Hz 10-bit operation without DSC compression, unlike the previous XG27AQDMG which was limited to HDMI 2.0
  • VRR flicker, historically a problem on older Asus OLED models, is reported as significantly improved on this monitor — noticeable only during loading screens for most users
  • Units with good grey uniformity are described as panel-for-panel better than the Gigabyte MO27Q28G and the older XG27AQDMG, making it the current top 1440p WOLED pick when you get a clean unit

Cons

  • Grey banding panel lottery is unavoidable — a meaningful portion of units ship with visible vertical banding at grey gradients, and some users confirmed no improvement after 150+ hours and 100+ pixel refresh cycles
  • Text fringing inherent to WOLED subpixel layout makes it a poor choice for heavy productivity use, reading long documents, or games with significant on-screen text like MMORPGs
  • PWM flicker sensitivity is a real concern: some users report headaches and eye strain from the panel's inherent flicker that is separate from VRR flicker and is present on all WOLED panels
  • SDR black levels suffer from black crush in certain configurations, requiring manual adjustments in Nvidia Control Panel (raising luminosity 5–10%) or switching to HDR mode to mitigate
  • At $649, users who lost the panel lottery and couldn't return their unit feel the value proposition collapses — the QD-OLED alternatives at similar price points avoid the banding issue entirely
  • Asus DisplayWidget Center software is reported as buggy and prone to losing all saved profiles, forcing users to rely on the awkwardly positioned horizontal joystick for OSD navigation

Does the Banding Actually Disappear With Use?

Reddit is divided: some owners report grey banding vanishing after a single pixel refresh, while others describe zero improvement after 150+ hours and over 100 cleaning cycles. The honest answer is that it depends on the unit — and that uncertainty is exactly why 'panel lottery' has become the defining phrase for this monitor.

The Best 1440p OLED — If You Get a Good Panel

Owners with clean units consistently rank the XG27AQWMG above both the Gigabyte tandem and the prior-gen XG27AQDMG, citing better brightness, HDMI 2.1, and the TrueBlack coating as genuine differentiators. The problem is that the premium you're paying buys you a shot at the best 1440p experience, not a guarantee of one.

FPS Players Are Split on Whether OLED Hype Holds Up

Competitive FPS users expecting OLED to immediately outperform their high-refresh TN or IPS setups have been the most vocal critics. The monitor excels in HDR titles and cinematic games, but some users running CS2 or Valorant found their previous 360Hz QD-IPS panels felt equally responsive in practice — a reminder that refresh rate and motion clarity are different things.

And we still wonder why companies are so stingy about all the returns and scams. Yes return your monitor and never buy another one again because you will never be happy if you are one of these that judge a purchase on something you're never going to see. Guy runs 24 pixel refreshes when he gets it? Man what is going on with these new OLED users? Don't touch any setting for 100 hours. It's literally organic material that needs to break in.

Sorry, but this reads like some ai slop or paid 'negative review'. Not a single reputable (tftcentral, rtings etc) have experienced similar issues, but here we are. Funny, yours not the first of its kind and all have had similar texts.

Nope it doesn't get better after 150 hours use and 100 refreshes no change it is manufacturing problem; I have LG C8 TV while uniformity is not perfect it is muuuch better than tandem even after 7 years of use

Prior to owning an OLED, I thought they were close to flawless outside of details like burn-in, brightness, price and purple blacks in a bright room on Samsung, but now having owned 2 OLEDs, the MO27Q28G which I swiftly returned and now the XG27AQWMG I say that they're quite a flawed technology and I feel misled by the toxic positivity of this community.

I won the panel lottery, my Gigabyte tandem is perfect but I wouldn't have taken the risk if I had seen this subreddit before I bought it. Would you have kept yours if it didn't have the banding?

Their new monitor looks worse than my QD-OLED with 5000 hours on it, just stop with the bootlicking, maybe if the companies don't want people returning their products, they can perhaps do better QA testing?

Mine, live, looks almost perfect unless you inspect it closely (at like one fourth to one seventh of normal viewing distance); it used to have a banding issue when it was new, it went away with normal usage and normal pixel cleans every 4-5 hours.

These issues are noticeable in normal use (for example, when playing games). You are excusing what is arguably a defect on a 650 USD product.

I recently received my xg27aqwmg and I am loving it. I was on the fence for a long time between which model to choose. In the end the xg27aqwmg came out and I went for it over the QD-OLED options. The tandem OLED has better brightness and I preferred the WOLED subpixel layout for text clarity.

I don't disagree with you. But it's due to the white sub layer and is the downside of the WOLEDs at this time. So it's pretty much pick your poison. 4th gen tandem WOLED = banding, QD with the purple blacks and easily scratched surface, IPS you have IPS glow. You get the idea.

Do you notice the banding in any practical use cases as well, such as in games and in video, or is it only noticeable when looking for it? I planned on getting the xg27aqwmg as well, but decided last minute to try 21:9 1440p.

I think your expectations coming into this monitor were way too unrealistic. People mainly love OLED for that intense deep black and contrast. For what the monitor is designed to do, I think it does so very well. Sure it has flaws, but no monitor is perfect and there are going to be trade-offs.

For 99.9% of the people one pixel cleaning will fix the gray banding when it comes new out of the factory. As mentioned many times before, it is normal on WOLED panels and almost always happens. However, if you play anything with lots of text in it or wanna use it for productivity I do not recommend it as 1440P text fringing blows.

Coming from a 180Hz high end IPS monitor, a 1440p OLED was the single largest upgrade to my PC other than graphics card upgrades.

The sub is vastly overblowing the impact of gray banding because it is a meme now. In actual use I almost never spot it, especially at higher brightness settings. When I do spot it, it is when I have a large dark mode app running and even then I have to look close.

It's gonna be a bit of a panel lottery. Not everyone gets bad banding. So you either play the lottery or gotta find something else. You could also look at some QD-OLEDs which don't really seem to come with banding issues.

Before the banding lottery we had the backlight lottery with IPS panels. If you don't mind gray banding I would get a tandem panel because they seem better overall and more scratch resistance to the panel.

My unit after 500 hours did not get better, I am in the process of RMA now.

The panel lottery is real with the 4th gen WOLED panels. I assume all the manufacturers are using the LG panel. It can get better over time, but in extreme cases like OP's it's return or RMA. When I play really dark games I just crank the brightness to 50% and peak to high and don't notice any banding.

This is my third OLED monitor and it's the clear winner so far. I have a 360hz QD-OLED from Asus, WOLED 240hz glossy, and this tandem has a better feature set than my other monitors and it looks better than my WOLED and about even with my QD.

Regarding the text fringing I feel like many people in this subreddit blow it out of proportion. I don't have any other QD-OLED monitors to compare it to, but on the xg27aqwmg texts appear crystal clear to me. I do a lot of Software Development work and text looks fine to my eye.

I have one and I'm happy with mine. My coworker also got one and is happy with his. We were both worried after reading about all the issues here on reddit, but none of us have been bothered by anything on our monitors. There is for sure some grey uniformity issues with dark grays if I look at a test, but I almost never see it in real use.

I got one and it has minimal vertical banding in test and not noticeable in gaming or when watching YouTube. I ordered a 2nd unit to try to test my luck, unluckily it was worse and had noticeable banding in real content. Still overall it's a generation leap in performance over LCD monitors.

Fully agreed, everything is great except the gray uniformity and gray banding was a letdown. Same on the PG27AQWP-W.

It doesn't get better, had two units and the Gigabyte one as well. All +100 hours and multiple pixel cleaning. It doesn't get any better and you have to live with it or return it.

It's sad because these monitors provide a great picture quality, but the brightness is not great and the banding IS noticeable across different units. At the end of the day, I ended up getting a LG G5 55 inches and I am happy.

xg27aqwmg is basically better in all aspects than xg27aqdmg based on the info on the internet. Brightness and true black coating really matter. Also, xg27aqdmg doesn't have HDMI 2.1. If it's only 50 USD difference, definitely go for aqwmg.

In most games like CS2, Alan Wake 2 the banding is not noticeable but in some like Silent Hill 2, GTA 5, RDR2 if there is gray color like sky you can see it; also while browsing in dark mode also.

I also have this monitor. But I've also had other OLEDs so I know to expect some color banding (especially grey). I've found playing games it isn't an issue at all. Streaming movies and other content on YouTube, Netflix etc I lower the color from 10bit to 8bit in Nvidia control panel and it seems to help reduce it a bit.

It's really not easy, I got that monitor, I come from the Samsung G7 which still works perfectly. For sure the OLED is better in every way, but I'm not sure it's 600€ worth. Everything is better, I miss a bit the curved of the G7 sometimes.

Just buy it, the monitor will sell out quickly and you'll regret not pulling the trigger earlier. I'm loving my unit. It has some banding but it's not bad at all, everything else about it is top notch.

Mine has been excellent so far. Great colours. I observed the grey screen banding but that completely disappeared after a single pixel refresh. Reading is definitely a bit more straining to the eyes though but this is not a monitor for reading text.

Everyone so worried about banding with Asus right now, I wouldn't even buy one until they get their QC right. It's the reason I didn't buy one honestly.

I basically have the same banding as you have. I've had the monitor since December, and only noticed it one time in one game during playing. I will demand a new one before warranty expires, but for now I'm good with it. If you don't see it while playing there is no need to worry.

My biggest flaw is the lack of internal speaker, it should be expected at this price point.

Regardless of what some people have posted about the Gigabyte MO27Q28G, this monitor is really great. I have 0 issues with my unit. Most people are satisfied and never get around to post it here on reddit. I'm coming from a 32GS95UX and this new tandem panel looks miles better due to the increased brightness, coating and text clarity.

The OLED hype is definitely overblown by a wide degree. You have to take what people say with a grain of salt because they're often caught up in the hype or trying to sell you on it. OLED is definitely better in most cases, but it's not 'game changing', 'groundbreaking' or 'breathtaking' as a lot here would have you believe. What you are paying for is better contrast and maybe better colors.

I have the same problem and I'm sending it back today. I'm having the same issues with gray banding. I put both side by side and, well, I can say there are hardly any differences except for the higher peak brightness and slightly better colors. I'd rather wait and see. Maybe I'll order it again if they fix all this.

I bought my first WOLED yesterday. Out of the box banding but with one pixel refresh it was gone. I hope it doesn't make a return. The colors are still great and put to shame most LCDs.
