Summary

The ASUS ROG Strix XG27ACS is a 27-inch 1440p 180Hz Fast IPS gaming monitor that has earned a generally positive reception among Reddit users, particularly for its motion performance and value proposition at its price point. The monitor's variable overdrive that actually works across the full refresh rate range is consistently praised as a standout feature rarely found at this price. However, the community is sharply divided on the matte anti-glare coating, which many describe as grainy or oily-looking on white backgrounds, while others say it's a non-issue at normal viewing distances. It's primarily recommended for gamers rather than mixed-use setups involving productivity or text-heavy work. A newer successor model, the XG27ACG, has been pointed out by several users as addressing some of the coating complaints for those who can stretch their budget.

Pros

  • Variable overdrive that works seamlessly across the entire 60–180Hz range is unique in this price bracket, delivering consistently clean motion without needing to swap profiles
  • ELMB Sync (backlight strobing with adaptive sync enabled) provides motion clarity comparable to 240Hz monitors, a major selling point for competitive gaming
  • Excellent out-of-box color accuracy with 133% sRGB coverage and strong brightness output around 500 nits — colors pop noticeably compared to budget competitors
  • PS5 VRR compatibility over HDMI 2.0 confirmed by multiple owners, making it a rare budget option for console gaming at 1440p
  • USB-C input with DisplayPort alt mode provides added connectivity flexibility not commonly found on monitors in this class
  • Comprehensive OSD with on-screen FPS counter, Shadow Boost, and full unclamped controls gives more granular tuning than most competitors

Cons

  • Matte anti-glare coating is polarizing — many owners describe a grainy, oily, or Vaseline-like shimmer on white and light-colored backgrounds that is especially distracting for productivity or text-heavy use
  • IPS glow in the lower-left corner is notably worse than average for IPS panels, with some units showing a pronounced golden/orange tint at corners even when viewed head-on
  • QC consistency is a persistent concern — multiple users report stuck or dead pixels on first unboxing, and some required replacement units that had the same issues
  • Contrast ratio of around 1000–1100:1 is standard IPS, so blacks look grayish in dark rooms — VA alternatives like the AOC Q27G3XMN offer far deeper blacks at a similar price
  • The bundled DisplayPort cable has been flagged by multiple owners as insufficient, causing random black screen flickers that disappear after swapping to a higher-quality cable
  • ELMB mode disables VRR and grays out other settings, so strobing and adaptive sync cannot be used simultaneously without workarounds

The Coating Debate That Won't Die

Hundreds of Reddit comments split hard on the matte finish — some say it's a dealbreaker that ruins whites and text, others use it daily for work without noticing. Viewing distance and use case appear to determine which camp you fall into.

The Variable Overdrive Nobody Talks About

While most reviews focus on the coating drama, the XG27ACS quietly delivers something rare in its price range: variable overdrive that actually tracks across the full refresh rate window. Owners switching from 165Hz IPS monitors consistently note cleaner motion handling.

Buy the 2025-Made Unit or Buyer Beware

Several community members specifically advise checking the manufacture date before buying — users report that panels made from April 2025 onward appear to have reduced coating grain and flicker issues compared to earlier batches.

I had to go to "Other sellers on Amazon" to find this pricing. Shipped and fulfilled by Amazon.

The ASUS monitor has also been reviewed and found to have variable overdrive that actually works. The fact that it has a set it and forget it overdrive mode is very appealing since you usually get poor 60-100hz overdrive performance on these cheaper monitors to get the good 144-180hz performance.

Its going to be like pretty standard 1000-1300 to 1 contrast like most IPS monitors. Blacks are never going to be a strength of regular IPS though and VA/Mini-LED whether IPS or VA are better for deeper blacks.

I bought this monitor last week. It's pretty good compared to my wife's LG 27GP850. It has ELMB Sync but I think the more surprising feature here is variable overdrive. This monitor is the only one that has that feature in this price range. It's motion performance also rivals that of 240hz monitors. So that's pretty sweet, especially since driving 180fps is quite a bit easier than 240fps.

Returned the one I bought a few days ago because not only did it have a dead pixel right off center, the anti-glare coating on this monitor is the worst I've personally experienced, kind of looks like it has an oily film over the screen most noticeable on white backgrounds, I'm very nitpicky though, other than those 2 issues though it was really good so I'm pretty disappointed.

Actually just set up the ASUS and am replying on it right now. So far, so good. I returned the AOC because my unit had a slight red tint that I couldn't dial out, and I could see scan lines on some blue objects on screen. Small stuff, but it was enough to make me consider returning it in favor of the ASUS.

I just unboxed it, and the color is by far better than the MSI mag 274qrf qd e2, but by far i can saturate the colors by Nvidia and still precise. The only down side, its the white color have some type of filter, but to be honest you need to be too close to actually bother you. A little of IPS glow in bottom left.

I've also heard some people say the coating is bad, but I've also heard people say that the picture is great, so I decided that I'll probably take it and if I don't like it, I'll just return it.

I own the ROG Strix XG27ACMS and it is fantastic. It has no backlight bleed and little to no IPS glow. For a monitor in this price range HDR works well.

And that's why I returned my XG27ACS — that yellow glow for me it is very noticeable. Now if you are happy with it and you don't notice it so much, then just enjoy it, it is a very nice and good performance monitor, but that yellow glow got me so much. Even from the front of the monitor, totally centered I was seeing all the 4 corners yellow, very annoying.

I got one for prime day. Been using it today with out of box settings. It looks very nice. If I didn't already have a dual 4k setup at home, I'd get 3 of these for a triple setup on my home desk.

Don't get the ACS, there is a newer version of it that doesn't have that dirty matte/grainy effect: ASUS ROG Strix XG27ACG.

I don't recommend it, the screen has this yellow greasy type of coating on it that looks horrible so had to return it.

No, it has a terrible matte coating. It's like you've smeared Vaseline on it. I sold it second-hand and bought the higher-end model, the 27UCS, which doesn't have that problem.

I was going to return mine because of the fuzzy whites and terrible contrast. My older Asus IPS does not have this. Now I definitely need to after it developed a streak of white pixels on the bottom right hand. Guess there really are no good 'budget' monitors anymore. If you want a good IPS you need to spend 550+ and at that amount why not get an OLED.

I bought this monitor and had a replacement. The first one was having gray horizontal flickering scan lines appear often enough that I had to return it. It also randomly went black screen for a couple of seconds and had pretty loud coil whine while in standby. The 2nd one I'm still using now but I've had it randomly go black screen for a couple of seconds twice now in about a week.

Coming from an older LG FHD 144 Hz Monitor the XG27ACS immediately looked better (colors and resolution), but somehow I got eye strain from it and feeling a little dizzy. Also when there is a lot of white on the screen, it looks like something is on the screen, looks like oil maybe. I played a bit with the settings, lowering brightness, contrast and trying different modes, nothing seemed to help. I will send it back in a couple of days.

I just bought this monitor through amazon uk. No dead pixels issues. I referenced rtings for compatibility, ps5 works great with bo6 2k + vrr. I notice the grainy coating most with white backgrounds (ie ms word) while I use this monitor for work. Since I have it next to a basic 24inch iss dell g21hs without such a matte display, the difference is more noticeable. Not a dealbreaker for me, I use the monitor 2 days a week.

I am no stranger to IPS glow (I've used nothing but for over 10 years) but the one I got is a whole other level. Its a shame as I'd otherwise keep it. Just wondering if I exchange it for another there'd be a chance of getting a better one or if they all came off the assembly line the same.

It's so annoying that I returned my second replacement from Currys. I thought it was a manufacturing defect on one, but both monitors had the exact same fuzzy/frosty graining look on white backgrounds. Reading text is horrible!! Completely disappears when gaming. Not for me because I also use my display for work at home.

The screen is overly reflective so dark scenes are bad. I returned mine for many reasons including this.

It's horrible on dark scenes, it shows like a golden tint on dark areas and even when looking at it straight from your face, the IPS glow on the corners is terrible with that gold tint.

I got this monitor for $200 and it honestly an insane deal. I think the 180hz very much justifies a $200+ price tag.

I can't mess with a grainy anti-glare coating. What a shame that they haven't revised it yet.

I got the same monitor and checked on the issue you're talking about. I can confirm that it is actually kinda oily or grainy if using white screen. But pretty much I don't use white mode often, I always use dark mode all across. So no problem for me should I say, and it is noticeable when you're working too close to your monitor. Because everytime I'm sitting in front of my pc I'm always half or almost a meter away, if so, the grainy or oil on the screen is barely noticeable.

I bought mine 6 months ago in the UK, happy with it. Use it for gaming and for office work, I'm used to the grainy panel now, noticeable with white spreadsheets.

It's okayish. The coating is quite distracting. The edge backlight is a bit weird, it's darker around the edges. The ELMB sync makes a high pitch squealing noise which is irritating.

I bought two of these monitors and the ACS has wayyy better viewing angles than the ACMS — on the ACMS everything is insanely dark on the sides of the screen, especially whites. However the ACS suffers from double the IPS glow as the ACMS and also has that Vaseline texture over the matte finish. It's hard to recommend which is better as both have huge downsides.

Just got this to replace an Asus VG247Q IPS monitor that served me well. It feels like the same monitor but better. Motion is notably improved although my old screen wasn't terrible either.

Just bought two of these. The color accuracy was the main draw but the high refresh rate is soooo nice.

Just got this monitor, looks completely clear to me. Only issue I have is some IPS glow in the left corner which is really only visible on dark scenes and pretty much expected. Mine also came with somewhat of a green tint that I've adjusted in Nvidia control panel and it seems good now.

I also just got this monitor and have no idea what everyone's talking about, screen is sharp and clear. You can tell it's matte (I came from a shiny horrible 1080p), but I love it! You can't go wrong.
