Summary

The ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ is a 27-inch 1440p IPS monitor running at 165Hz, and Reddit's verdict on it is largely positive with some persistent gripes. Long-term owners regularly praise it as a solid, no-frills entry into QHD gaming, particularly after dialing in color settings — many users report that the out-of-box picture is underwhelming but becomes genuinely impressive with manual tuning. The monitor appeals most to PC gamers pairing it with a mid-to-high-end GPU who want 1440p + high refresh at a sub-$250 price point. It is not recommended for PS5 users, as the console lacks native 1440p, G-Sync, and 165Hz support over HDMI. It's generally considered aging hardware at this point, with newer IPS options having surpassed it on color accuracy, brightness, and panel tech.

Pros

  • Excellent value for 1440p 165Hz IPS gaming — routinely praised when purchased at $200–$250, with multiple owners calling it a great deal for the spec sheet
  • Build quality stands out: thin bezels and an adjustable, well-engineered stand are consistently highlighted as above-average for the price tier
  • Color quality is strong after manual calibration — users share specific OSD settings (Racing mode, R:80 G:90 B:95, low contrast) that unlock noticeably better picture quality
  • G-Sync Compatible / FreeSync support works reliably for Nvidia and AMD users, and VRR functions up to 120Hz on PS5 via HDMI 2.0 when used as a PC/console hybrid
  • Long-term durability is well-documented: multiple owners report zero dead pixels or panel degradation after 2–3 years of daily use
  • Decent connectivity — multiple input ports (DisplayPort + dual HDMI) makes switching between devices easy, which owners frequently mention as a practical plus

Cons

  • Wake-from-sleep delay is consistently called out as a major annoyance — owners report 5–10 seconds to wake up, which causes Windows to shuffle window layouts on multi-monitor setups
  • Only 8-bit color depth with no FRC option — some users consider this a dealbreaker in 2024 and recommend paying more for a 10-bit panel with better gradient reproduction
  • HDR is essentially non-functional — 318–350 nits peak brightness is far below the 600+ nits needed for a meaningful HDR experience, and enabling it causes brightness flickering at high refresh rates
  • Overdrive (ELMB) requires per-game tuning: at sub-100Hz it becomes unusable due to heavy overshoot, making it a poor fit for console or less powerful GPU setups locked at 60fps
  • Aging panel compared to current competition — newer options like the LG 27GP850-B or Dell S2721DGF offer better color accuracy, faster response, or 10-bit panels at comparable prices
  • Built-in speakers are nearly universally described as useless — extremely quiet even at max system volume and with poor audio quality

The 10-Second Wake-Up Problem Nobody Warns You About

A persistent complaint across dozens of Reddit threads: the VG27AQ takes 5–10 seconds to wake from sleep, which is significantly slower than competing Dell and LG monitors at the same price. On multi-monitor setups, Windows reshuffles open windows during that gap — something owners describe as their biggest daily frustration with an otherwise solid monitor.

Is It Still Worth Buying When the Newer Options Have Caught Up?

Reddit's consensus is shifting. Users who bought the VG27AQ a couple years ago are satisfied, but those asking for buying advice in 2024 are increasingly being told to look elsewhere — the LG 27GP850-B, Dell S2721DGF, and newer ASUS iterations offer better specs at similar or lower sale prices. The VG27AQ still holds up, but it's no longer the go-to recommendation it once was.

Color Accuracy Unlocked: The Settings Reddit Actually Uses

Out of the box the picture can look flat and uninspiring, but the r/Monitors community has developed widely-shared OSD profiles that transform it. One highly-upvoted thread walked hundreds of buyers through specific color temperature and contrast values, with users reporting the monitor looks 'completely different' after applying them. It's an extra step most monitors don't require, but the payoff is real.

I bought this from Amazon warehouse for $217. Been a great monitor and this is a really good price. Speakers are terrible but honestly didn't expect much in that department. Adjustable stand is really well made and useful. Colors look really good after looking up some recommended settings and tinkering with it a bit. I also really like having multiple ports in the back so I don't have to unplug my cables when switching devices.

I like this more than the Dell monitor in this class that gets posted. The bezels are super thin and stand is fantastic.

I don't like this monitor, the wake from sleep time is extremely long. All of my Dell monitors would wake almost immediately and this thing would lag behind and take several more seconds to display images. Also, only 8 bit. Color banding is very apparent on smooth color transitions.

I've had this monitor for a couple years, pretty solid. Motion/strobing could be a bit better, but not much to complain about for this price. Besides the speakers being downright horrendous.

This monitor is from 2019. Wouldn't really recommend buying it with how IPS panels have gotten better over time.

Just preparing my RMA for the VG27AQ. Used it for a day and I get image retention (persistence) from just browsing the web. Even a normal news article left for 15 min is enough for the screen to persist. I've had a lot of experience with IPS displays over the years and I've never seen this problem.

I have this monitor. It is okay. The backlight bleed sucks on a dark screen. The speakers are just not even worth having. I also had to do a ton of adjusting to get the contrast and gamma corrected. It was a little disappointing to be honest. It does not handle scenes in dark rooms well. It is fast, good response rate, and the specs are nice. I have warmed up to it a bit, but I really wished I spent more and got a nicer monitor. It definitely feels budget-tier.

It's good monitor aside from the obscene wake up time and the black smearing.

I have this monitor and when my cpu went dead the wake from sleep time further confused me in troubleshooting. Aside from that, its annoying for seconds. I also remember that something to do with blackness made witcher 3 not ideal compared to 100 hours on a tn monitor. Overall im pretty happy with it but only had a 1080p tn monitor to compare to.

I honestly preferred this monitor over my personal 27GL83a-b that I got on a steal a year or two back (~$300). My mate has this for his main, and I have the little brother to it as my secondary and it's fantastic.

I have this and dont see why its still at this price. I really hate how it takes like 10 seconds to turn on from sleep and also the contrast isnt great. Ive been looking for a while to compare others to this and ive almost pulled the trigger several times on a few 200 dollar monitors.

I bought this monitor ages ago for $300, debatable if its worth $200 today. It's alright but response times and colors aren't fantastic. Has a good stand tho.

I have this monitor and overall I would call it 'decent'. My main annoyances are a bit of backlight bleed in the upper left, and the colour accuracy and contrast are average for an AUO panel (ie: not great). I got it for a special price of $399 so I can live with the issues.

I know this is an older post, but wondering as I just bought this model. How's the brightness on it? Is it worth it to pay the extra for the other version of this monitor for the hdr400 etc? This will be the first time I'm actually looking into a monitor besides refresh rate so I'm not sure.

This is good for the price, but be aware of any conflicts regarding using 165Hz and HDR at the same time. It may result in really bad brightness flickering.

I used this as an in between monitor when I returned a aw2721dw and waited for the aw3821dw to go on sale for Black Friday. I highly recommend it. I liked it a lot and I sometimes miss it because I didn't really care about it being perfect since it was so cheap.

Good monitor but man does it take ages to wake up from sleep. I have a 3 monitor setup, my other two awake instantly while this one takes at least 5-7s. Not the end of the world but windows does struggle to re-orient my programs as it's happening. Can be quite annoying.

It's decent. I have this monitor. For IPS it could have better contrast but once again it's good enough.

I bought same monitor 2 days ago. 0 problem. Works perfectly. I have Asus 5070 and ryzen 5 7600, 32 gb ram. I play pubg and cs 2 and black mesa. And I can say gaming in my pc feels like real life scenery. So works fine. I am so happy.

Great, excellent colors for being a IPS, tried the suggested setting on racing mode and work great for low lit room without giving eye strain. Like it was mentioned the HDR is not fully real HDR but is ok. No ghosting, no noticeable bleed, no dead or stuck pixels, speakers are usable but not good. Cons: it doesn't have height adjustment but I knew that before getting it.

Great post, I bought this monitor last month and love it as well. I'd say my version has slightly higher than normal IPS glow, noticeable sometimes but not immersion breaking.

I found a way to fix all the color distortions or any problems with the colors, if you head to your main monitor settings under color, then click color temp, change it from warm, to user mode, it fixes all the colors, now it looks 4k for me.

Playing on it for 3 days now, the backlight glow significantly reduced on dark backgrounds and unnoticeable on any other colors when viewed on angle. I think I'm gonna keep this one!

Yeah the wake up time is crazy compared to the others I've had over the years. Also depending on your preset, you can't adjust brightness.

I have had this monitor for 3 years now, and I absolutely love it. The ghosting can be pretty bad if you don't tweak the Tracefree setting but otherwise I have had zero issues with mine. Absolutely recommend it, especially at this price and from GameStop nonetheless!!

I love this monitor. 27", 1440p, 144hz, gsync, HDR, ISP. Lots of built in features (gimmicks). Way better than the similar Dell one I bought.

I have this exact monitor, have had it for 3ish years and I love it. That being said, there are definitely better panels out nowadays, although I'm not sure about in the same price range.

I got the VG27AQ and I am rather unhappy with it since the colours are rather bad and it sometimes being hard to read text on regardless of the sharpness I set it to. As a second (and by now it being the primary monitor) I got a LG 27GP850-B which is far better colour wise and about the same price. Also has less ghosting.

I'm returning mine, the picture is washed out trash. Used to have the vg27aq1a and it was the best. Debating on getting one again knowing its good or trying out the AOC Q27G3XMN.

For $125, this is a great deal! Honestly, a couple years ago this monitor would have been asking at least 350-400$ for this monitor. But due to the cheapening of high-end IPS display production in China, the prices of QHD monitors have dropped a lot. I still use this monitor and have no problems, no dead pixels, no distortions on the screen. It is still the same as the day I purchased it.

If you have HDR enabled in Windows turn it off. When HDR is enabled, it locks the monitor to Racing mode and you can't adjust anything.

As a 1080p monitor, it's great. As HDR it's REALLY bad. Not recommended for PS5. Have it as my PC monitor.

The wake time and multiple monitor icon memorization is broken on this monitor. It won't keep whatever windows you close on it, it'll get all moved around and broken. Super fucking annoying.
