Summary

The BenQ GW2490 is a 24-inch FHD IPS monitor aimed at work-from-home users, students, and casual gamers who prioritize eye comfort over raw performance. Reddit sentiment is generally positive for the price point, with users appreciating BenQ's eye care features like Low Blue Light, multiple display modes (Coding, Reading, Movie), and the auto-brightness sensor. However, the monitor draws criticism for its 6-bit + FRC panel rather than native 8-bit, weak 2W speakers, and a fixed non-ergonomic stand compared to its siblings. It sits in a crowded budget segment where competitors like the LG 24MR400 offer FreeSync and the GW2490T variant adds a fully adjustable stand for a small premium.

Pros

  • Eye care features are genuinely useful — Low Blue Light Plus, Brightness Intelligence auto-adjustment, and dedicated modes (Coding, ePaper, Movie) get consistent praise from users doing long work or reading sessions
  • 99% sRGB color coverage on an IPS panel makes it viable for UI/UX design and general creative work at an affordable price
  • 100Hz refresh rate is a step up from the standard 60Hz at this budget tier, providing smoother scrolling and casual gaming
  • Proximity/presence sensor (infrared) doubles as a health aid by detecting when you're sitting too close — a unique feature for eye strain prevention
  • Users report good overall build quality and clean image output for everyday productivity tasks at around $90

Cons

  • Panel is confirmed 6-bit + FRC, not native 8-bit — a spec that third-party databases and BenQ support themselves have confirmed, which matters for color-sensitive work
  • Built-in speakers are only 2W and widely considered worse than laptop speakers by owners — essentially useless for most users
  • Stand only supports tilt adjustment; no height, swivel, or pivot — users wanting ergonomic flexibility must upgrade to the GW2490T or buy a third-party arm
  • VESA mounting compatibility is compromised by a recessed mounting area (~5mm), making some third-party desk arms difficult or impossible to attach without adapters
  • No FreeSync support, putting it at a disadvantage versus LG 24MR400 and similar competitors for gaming use cases
  • Achieving 100Hz requires DisplayPort or USB-C — HDMI connections (especially via integrated graphics) can be limited to 75Hz in practice, which confuses buyers

That Little Sensor on the Front Isn't a Camera

Reddit threads are full of confused (and amused) users spotting the infrared proximity sensor on the GW2490's bezel. It's actually an eco feature that dims the screen when you step away — and alerts you when you're sitting too close.

GW vs BL vs T: BenQ's Model Naming Is a Mess

Users keep asking what separates the GW2490, BL2490, and GW2490T. The answer buried in threads: the BL is a business-rebranded version of the same panel, while the T adds the fully adjustable stand. If you care about ergonomics, the T is worth the extra spend.

A Solid Eye-Care Monitor That Trips on Its Own Specs

The GW2490 nails the brief for long work sessions — great modes, auto brightness, presence detection. But a 6-bit + FRC panel, no FreeSync, and a fixed stand leave enough gaps that spending a bit more on the GW2490T or a competitor is easy to justify.

Probably a sensor for the auto-brightness detection?

In monitors you can find a light sensor (to auto adjust brightness depending on your room light) and an infrared to detect if someone is in front of the monitor (auto turn off and save power while you are not there). For your model look up in your manual, cant be that hard.

My Benq PD3200U monitors have a sensor on the front for a basic presence detection. Settings are in the menu under ECO > ECO SENSOR. When it's switched on you can see a faint red glow in the panel (same as in your picture) from the two LEDs it's using for detection. It's a bit hit and miss but I leave it on because it mostly works.

Brightness sensor or IR receiver some monitors have remotes for some reason.

I'm also confused between these two as they're having almost similar specs & price. LG has freesync, and the benq doesn't have that feature.

It's been quite good so far. I like eye care protection and different modes that they have - like Coding, Reading a newspaper, movie etc. The speakers though are not too good and not loud either - my laptop speakers are better. But worth it for the price I think

I think Benq is better. Also remember, glossy screens is very bad if you use in the room that gets lots of light. Matte screens is good in both conditions.

We have the same monitor, one's for light detection for the automatic brightness and the other is an infrared proximity sensor for detecting your distance from the monitor. In their software you have an option to notify you when you are sitting too close to the monitor to help with eye strain. I know it's infrared because if you put a camera on it while the monitor is turned on, you'll see it glow red.

It's obviously not a camera...a monitor with a built in web cam would be a selling point and listed directly on the specs page.

According to panelook.com and displayspecifications.com it is 6bit + FRC, which isn't good.

6 bit + FRC, confirmed by the BenQ support.

The main difference is that the GW2490T has an ergonomic stand with Tilt (down/up), Swivel (left/right), Pivot and Height Adjustment. GW2490 stand is fixed, just tilt.

I bought the GW2490 and it doesn't fit with my dual arm desk stand. The VESA mounting area is like 5mm recessed so I can't put it on the stand without mounting it directly to the stand.

From what I can tell, the BL has an adjustable height base, speakers and additional HDMI port. The GW does not have these features.

If I understood correctly, there is no automatic brightness adjustment in GW

After search I found that my laptop monitor has 141 ppi, and the new monitor has around 93 ppi, that's what makes the difference.

Same here, I cannot see any difference in the specs that would seem significant, though there is a price difference, the GW2490 is about 15% more expensive here, not sure why.

Same doubt, as I can see with same price 180hz better other alternative also but not sure some saying benq have good if the budget is high otherwise all are same also, but still thinking to buy benq due to its heavy marketing
