Summary

The Alienware AW2725DM is a 27-inch 1440p IPS panel running at 180Hz, positioned as a budget-friendly entry in the Alienware lineup and widely praised on Reddit for punching above its price point. Most buyers come away satisfied with the color output, build quality, and smooth gaming performance, especially at $180–220 USD where it regularly lands on sale. That said, IPS glow and backlight bleed are the most talked-about issues — panel lottery is real, and a vocal minority of buyers have returned theirs because of it. The monitor dropped from HDR600 to HDR400 compared to its predecessor, and it omits a 3.5mm audio jack entirely, which is a genuine pain point for console players. Reddit broadly treats this as one of the better value 1440p IPS options available right now, but with caveats you should know going in.

Pros

  • Excellent color output with 95% DCI-P3 coverage — calibrated units get surprisingly close to professional monitors in side-by-side comparisons
  • Smooth 180Hz performance with no noticeable ghosting at 2ms (Super Fast) overdrive mode — the vast majority of users report clean motion in fast-paced games
  • Full console compatibility: confirmed VRR at 1440p 120Hz on PS5 via HDMI 2.1, with ALLM support — rare at this price tier
  • Built-in USB hub (multiple ports) is a practical bonus that users didn't expect at this price point
  • Solid build quality with a fully adjustable stand — feels more premium than competing monitors at the same price
  • Strong value proposition at sale prices between $160–220; users who paid $180–200 consistently say it's hard to beat at that number

Cons

  • No 3.5mm audio jack — a meaningful annoyance for PS5 or Xbox users who want external speakers without buying an HDMI audio extractor
  • IPS glow and backlight bleed are panel-lottery dependent: some units are fine, others have severe enough glow to warrant returns — night gaming in dark rooms is the worst case
  • Inverse ghosting at the fastest 'Extreme' (1ms) overdrive setting forces most users to run 'Super Fast' (2ms) instead, negating the advertised 1ms spec
  • Downgrade from predecessor AW2724DM: HDR600 dropped to HDR400, and overall the community sees this as a cost-cut revision rather than a true generational improvement
  • sRGB mode accuracy is questionable out of the box — the clamped sRGB mode washes out content, and getting proper color accuracy requires an ICC profile and calibration
  • Visible pixel grid at 180Hz reported by multiple users; dropping to 120Hz resolves the issue but negates the monitor's headline spec

The IPS Glow Problem Is Real — But So Is the Panel Lottery

Backlight bleed and IPS glow are the single biggest complaint thread in every AW2725DM discussion. Some owners barely notice it; others returned the unit immediately. The variance between panels is wide enough that buying from somewhere with a good return policy is basically mandatory advice from the community.

Is This a Downgrade or a Price Correction?

Reddit is split on how to frame the 2725DM vs its predecessor. It lost HDR600, gained nothing meaningful on specs, and dropped in price — some see that as a smart repositioning for the $180–220 tier, others see it as Dell cutting corners. Either way, you're not getting the premium build of the 2724DM at a lower cost.

Console Gamers Love It Except for One Thing

PS5 and Xbox users consistently praise 1440p 120Hz VRR support over HDMI 2.1 — a feature that's genuinely rare at this price. But the missing headphone jack is a recurring complaint from anyone who wants audio through the monitor without rigging up a workaround.

It's crazy how poor some ips panels have gotten. My old LG ud68 still does great and doesn't have bleed anywhere like this.

Perfectly ok to return it if you're not happy with it. IPS strengths are typically in color, motion, and viewing angles. If VA strengths like black levels are more important to you, then that's valid - a newer VA panel might suit you better.

I just wanted to get talked into keeping it but reading some more of these comments I think I will end up returning it.

Yeah, panels have definitely decreased in quality over the years. It wasn't like this back then, has nothing to do with being IPS. I think it's to push more people to expensive options (oled).

Yeah IPS glow/bleed is usually panel lottery. You could buy 10 of the same monitor and you would likely have some as bad as this, some better, some maybe worse. It's just how IPS works no matter the brand and the lack of quality control from all the brands as to what they deem as acceptable. Besides going for OLED or MiniLED, one sadly just has to play the return or exchange game with IPS until you get one that you can tolerate.

Bought this monitor few weeks ago for my dual monitor setup where I mostly do photography but one monitor is connected to gaming PC and also PS5 for some casual gaming. I find it to be absolute beast for what it costs. Great colors, even better after calibration using Xrite calibration device - almost on pair with my other EIZO screen next to it which is also IPS. Gaming is great, huge upgrade from my 60hz Eizo screen it replaced.

If IPS glow is the reason you're returning this monitor. DONT. It is a trait of IPS displays. If budget isn't an issue, GO OLED. Else you dont have much option except a VA panel. Made a switch from IPS to OLED for this very reason 2 years back.

It's been great tbh. I usually play FPS games and my previous monitor was dell 27inch but it was just 75hz monitor. Now that the new one has 180hz.. Man I can see the difference while playing. Happy gaming!

Definitely recommend for the beautiful colours and brightness. You can't really expect 'true hdr' from a hdr 400 monitor but it really does the job. If you are getting it for $190, it's definitely worth it.

Recently got it. Everything is great except for the light bleeding blacks. It is especially noticeable in the black bars while watching movies. Otherwise solid build with great colors and brightness.

Wanted to buy it, but it doesn't have a 3.5mm jack (I have some good speakers so it mattered to me), although that's just me and from what I gather it's a great monitor especially at that price.

Bought from Amazon two weeks ago at 25.5k, loving it, it's more expensive than other 2k ips monitors but definitely worth it.

I was stuck between choosing these two for a week, did some digging and went with Alienware though I'm an Asus fan boy.

Just bought this monitor 2 months ago and i am pretty satisfied with it, colour look good and hdr with witcher 3 classic version with blitz fx look far far better than witcher 3 next gen. The only thing is that almost no games or movies support hdr. For the price i can't complain here.

My decade old refurbished Acer Predator XB271HU finally failed and I've been looking for a replacement. Thanks for the writeup because now I'm heavily considering this as an option. Never thought I'd buy an Alienware product lmao. It's crazy how this spec of monitor has gone down in price over the years as that refurb Acer was like $600 back in the day.

Dell seemed to go cheaper and lower quality across their lineup. The aw2724dm was a $400 monitor in 2023, but it was definitely not selling because competitors offer better monitors at $250. Even after dropping the price to $200, which is honestly a good price for the product, it took them a while to clear their stock. $200 is their clearance pricing and you can't compare that to this 2725 at $200 as the 2724 was worth $400.

I also bought this yesterday after heavy research in my price range. Am satisfied aside from the one thing that I didn't take into account while researching which is audio out. I had just assumed this monitor would have a headphone jack like many of its competitors in this class.

They also eliminate audio jack from AW2725D (OLED variant) which is quite annoying as a console gamer. How much money can they save by this, while adding meaningless multi usb ports.

I found a very comprehensive review — overall the monitor is pretty good, slightly less good than the Dell G2724D, great picture and colors, the contrast ratio tested is 893:1 which is disappointing for sure, with brightness up to 487 nits.

I just picked the Alienware up from BB for the 179 and you could do way worse for 180 bucks, it's a solid no-frills monitor, I have zero complaints at this price point.

I have had the alienware one for a few months now. While I'm not a big gamer. I bought it because of its color accuracy. Im not a professional editor, so it works great for what I need. I also didnt know it had USB hubs till I got it. Which is nice as I can leave my HDD plugged in at all times. If I needed another, I would have zero issues buying another.

Bought this monitor when my almost decade old acer predator x27 165hz ips display died after a storm. Long story short I picked up the DM and returned it within a week. Backlight bleed was not terrible and was typical of any IPS display. Image blur didn't seem to be a major issue but color accuracy and gamma tracking were not very good at all. When using SRGB mode the monitor correctly clamps to srgb but gamma tracking is way off especially in the lower range, tending to wash out content.

Got this a few days ago. Seeing a bit of ghosting at 180hz - 1440p - extreme mode (1ms). Changed to 2ms 180hz and it works great. I'm not a big gamer so for me for games like expedition 33 it's still great. It's got a good build and feels quality which is why I bought it. I wouldn't pay $450 AUD for it but $300 may be yes.

Seems sick but unfortunately i am seeing ghosting. Using it at 180hz 1ms delay. That's my only complaint though so idk how to go forward with it.

AW2725DM is a total let down with lower HDR400 with practically the same specs but better build quality. Disappointing!

I had the AW2725DM delivered today. It's amazing, great picture quality, buttery smooth and looks great all round. For the money it's well worth it.

It's honestly the cheapest 1440p monitor I could find with 400 nits, 180 Hz, and HDMI 2.1 (with VRR support for PS5). But the lack of an audio out is kind of annoying — if you want to hook up both a PC and a PS5 and use external speakers, you'll need an HDMI switch with audio extraction or some other workaround.

I am currently having this monitor and it gives me a lot of eye strain, and it doesn't depend on brightness and contrast. My previous 1080p IPS didn't give me a lot of eye strain. Otherwise, monitor is excellent, but this problem with eye strain gives me discomfort.

I bought this monitor and I noticed that when I use it above 120Hz, the pixels become visible — you can see the pixel grid. At 180Hz, it becomes very noticeable. I returned the first monitor and bought another one. The same thing happened; the pixels are still visible at high refresh rates. I set it to 120Hz and it's fine.

I got the monitor yesterday and the pixel grid was the first thing I noticed. Felt like it was most visible up in the gray Firefox toolbars. Turned it down to 120Hz now and it looks a lot better. Will have to do some experimenting to see if there is a sweetspot somewhere between 120 and 180Hz.

I got the AW2725DM. Total price $240, shipped and sold by Walmart. Worked like a charm with factory settings - just had to turn brightness down from 75% to 65% - and they had overdrive set to 'fast', so not getting that 1ms response, but I can't tell the diff. Hope it holds up for many years!

I also bought this model after sticking with a TN monitor from AOC for more than 6 years. The moment I noticed the horrible IPS glow compared to my old TN monitor, I decided to return it, unfortunately. The reflection/glow you get when you're in a low light environment really hurt my eyes.

I just got this monitor, pretty happy with it so far, although it sounds like something was rattling around in the upper part of the stand riser when I was unboxing and assembling it.

Yeah, I feel ya, once you go VA, it's so hard to go back to IPS. I tried it myself and just got so frustrated with the glows. I even tried fast IPS which I have to say have improved in terms of the glows, but still, once your eyes get used to not seeing that (mostly around curved VAs), it's hard to adjust.

It is obviously a downgrade from the previous model. Better ventilation and new design but lower brightness. Not worth unless we are missing something here.
