Summary

The LG UltraGear 27GR83Q-B is a 27-inch QHD IPS panel running at 240Hz, positioned as a strong mid-range gaming monitor that Reddit's PC building community views as a solid buy — but only when on sale. Users who picked it up between $280 and $350 tend to be happy with their purchase, praising the sharp image, fast motion handling, and a feature set that's hard to find elsewhere at the price. The consensus is that it's a capable, reliable IPS display rather than a jaw-dropping one, and it rewards users who calibrate it properly. Gamers coming from older 1080p TN panels see a clear upgrade in image quality, while those coming from VA panels or OLED may feel the contrast is a step down. Long-term owners report mostly stable performance, with a minority experiencing reliability issues after several months of use.

Pros

  • One of the very few flat 27" QHD 240Hz monitors with full 48Gbps HDMI 2.1, enabling 1440p 240Hz 10-bit without compression over HDMI — a key differentiator for users connecting consoles or AMD GPUs
  • Improved contrast ratio over older LG GP and GL series panels, with users noting better uniformity and noticeably less IPS glow than the 27GP83B-B and 27GP850-B predecessors
  • Motion handling and input lag are competitive — one owner measured 3.3ms input lag, and Hardware Unboxed noted response times comparable to the Dell AW2723DF at a lower price point
  • Matte anti-glare coating performs well in bright rooms, eliminating distracting reflections that plague glossy panels
  • Ships with both HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4a cables included, and G-SYNC Compatible / FreeSync Premium support works reliably across Nvidia and AMD setups
  • On-sale pricing regularly drops to $280–$350, where it consistently beats the competition on the combined metric of refresh rate, resolution, and connectivity

Cons

  • MSRP of $499 is widely seen as unjustifiable — users repeatedly note the monitor is only worth buying during its frequent sales at $280–$350, where it becomes competitive
  • Contrast ratio is still IPS-class (~1000:1), meaning dark scenes in games look noticeably washed out compared to VA panels or OLED — a dealbreaker for users who game in dark rooms
  • IPS glow can be 'almost unbearable' for dark content according to multiple owners upgrading from older TN panels, with backlight bleed described as 'brutal' by at least one user
  • Response time compliance at 240Hz is low — Hardware Unboxed found only 17% compliance at the Fast overdrive setting, meaning the panel rarely sustains true 240Hz-speed pixel transitions in practice
  • Uses a BOE panel rather than LG's own nano-IPS, which some buyers consider a downgrade and a reason competitors like the Asus VG27AQM1A ($199) or HP Omen 27qs exist at lower prices
  • Isolated but notable reliability complaints: one user experienced a black screen failure after 5 months, another reported screen dimming after 2 years, and one unit developed shimmering pixels within a month

The HDMI 2.1 Factor: Why This Monitor Has No Real Rival at 27"

Multiple Reddit users point out that the 27GR83Q-B occupies an unusually specific niche: it's the only flat 27" QHD 240Hz monitor with full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1, making it the default pick for anyone who needs 1440p 240Hz over HDMI without compression. Curved panels, OLED, or monitors capped at 144Hz via HDMI are the only alternatives.

Is $350 a Good Deal or Just Its Normal Price?

Reddit's buildapcsales community has repeatedly flagged '$349.99' posts as unremarkable, noting this monitor hits that price so often it's practically the real MSRP. The actual sweet spot — where enthusiasm picks up — is around $280–$300, which it has hit multiple times via LG's direct store, student discounts, and cashback stacking.

Calibration Makes or Breaks This Monitor

Several owners describe the out-of-box colors as 'gray' or 'washed out,' but report a dramatically better experience after applying RTings ICC profiles and adjusting gamma. Users who skip calibration tend to be disappointed; those who go through the process often end up calling it a great panel for the money.

I have a GL83A and while it's a solid ol' reliable I cannot comprehend why you would buy one right now given other market options unless it's less than $150 or something.

You can get the Asus VG27AQM1A which is also 1440p 240Hz IPS for $199.00

This is THE only monitor that is: 1. 240hz 2. has HDMI 2.1 3. Not curved (i hate curved :/) 4. 27" 5. Not OLED (I returned both the LG and ASUS 27" OLED - horrible brightness/colors). Everything else out there I've looked for is either curved, larger than 27", or only hdmi 2.0.

IPS has inherent issues just as VA has unique inherent issues for that panel type. IPS typically has lower contrast and IPS glow. Combine those two issues + darker games and you're in for a graphically subpar experience when playing those types of games.

Would recommend, I'm glad I got it. Much better than the 27" OLEDS. Once they figure how the brightness and colors and hdr of oled, maybe next year - then those will be the best of the best - right now, it's a waste of money.

I have this exact monitor and I love it. Looks great, works great, and is regularly on sale for $300 and it's hard to beat at that price. It's got solid reviews all around as well, so it's definitely not a purchase you'll be sad with imo

I wanted to make mention why I think this Monitor is good compared to others. Out of most similar monitors, this is the only one I have found for 1440p at 27" that uses full bandwidth 48gbps HDMI 2.1. I have seen others with HDMI 2.1 on the specs but cap at like 144hz via HDMI even with the proper cables. If you are looking to do 1440p 240hz 10bit without compression via HDMI then this is the monitor.

Got mine a few days ago from LG for less than $300. For $300 it's a steal but if paying MSRP ($500) I'd possibly spend a little more and get something better. It gets plenty bright and handles motion very well. On the other hand, light bleed is pretty bad and dark colors are very washed out. All in all, it seems like a respectable IPS display with high refresh rates at a somewhat affordable price point.

I used one of these for a year and honestly, it was okay but coming from an ancient BenQ XL2720Z (120Hz TN) the IPS glow on the LG was almost unbearable for even remotely dark content. I replaced it with a KTC H27E22 (1440P 240hz Fast-HVA) and was completely blown away by the improvement in usability.

I have the monitor, got it on sale from LG for $350 and I ABSOLUTELY love it! Crisp, great text, great picture, and it looks wonderful when gaming or watching movies. It has a nice matte finish so it is amazing in a well-lit room and does not give off light source glare. I think some people are very indecisive and wibbly-wobbly and constantly nitpick their decision and find every negative. Personally, this is a great monitor for the $350 to $400 range, and it is one I can personally recommend.

I bought one directly from LG last month. I've been using it for a couple weeks. I was a bit nervous about the BOE panel, but the uniformity and increased contrast ratio compared to the 27GP83B-B I tried previously are much better. I definitely recommend it over the LG 27GP models at this price.

The main ones you would compare at this price range and specs are the MSI G274QPX and HP Omen 27qs. There is a 240hz Acer monitor at this price that Hardware Unboxed recommends against. All of these use a BOE panel and released in 2023, though there's a chance the 27qs comes with a LG. It seems to me all of these have major drawbacks like no overdrive mode, missing HDMI 2.1, or mediocre response times.

See how this thing reviews for contrast before sending it. I got a 27GL83A-B and its near unusability when games get dark has been pissing me off lately.

I have been really enjoying mine for about three weeks. I got it for ~$246 after all cash back. I do sometimes miss the lack of a backlight strobing option coming from an old BenQ XL2720Z (known for having great strobing features), but it hasn't been a problem for me. Finally having better viewing angles, color quality and brightness (thanks to no strobing options) is a very welcome change.

I've had this LG monitor for almost a year. Objectively, it works well and isn't bad. However, subjectively, I've never been impressed with how it looks. The colors always seemed grayer or washed out to me (likely due to the matte screen, as I later discovered). I calibrated it and frequently adjusted the settings, but I could never find a setup that felt just right.

it is often discounted to this price. $350 is still a good price for this monitor. The monitor was a great purchase for me.

This has a much higher contrast ratio than both the GL and GP models, according to the techless and PCWorld reviews

Looks like HBU believes the monitor is better than the MSI offering at the same place. The main thing that sticks out to me in the review is that at the ideal overdrive setting of Fast, the monitor is only hitting a refresh compliance of 17%. In comparison, a high end monitor like the Alienware XG27AQMR has a compliance of 55% for 300hz. The response time isn't fast enough to hit 240hz most of the time if I understand correctly.

I have the ultra gear had it since 2023, i ended up using these settings Gamer 1, Contrast 70, Color Temp Custom, Gamma Mode 2, RGB Levels 50, 50, 44, Black Stabilizer 55. I also have the high quality colour setting turn on ingame as you only lose like 2s and it makes the game look much better.

It's fine as long as you know the ghosting will be a bit worse than your old monitor since TN and particularly strobing with BenQ is still some of the fastest response times other than OLED. You're just not going to see as good of motion from most 1440p 240hz IPS compared to TN/DYAC, but its still a pretty nice IPS monitor overall as long as you know what to expect.

Heya, I know its a late answer, but just in case someone has the same question; as someone who has bought this monitor, I can answer that Yes, it has hdmi 2.1 and displayport 1.4a cables included, so you do not need to buy an additional one.

I've had it for two years and now the screen goes dark for maybe 5 seconds every once in a while. It only has a 1 year warranty. Took a good bit of tweaking to adjust the colors to look normal. With settings adjusted it looks phenomenal. I just bought the AOC Q27G3XMN (came in yesterday) and will have to mess with it more but off hand the LG looks way better.

Worst monitor I've ever owned. Can't console game on it because it constantly turns off and doesn't turn back on. On my pc I've had constant issues with the monitor going fuzzy. Would not recommend to anyone.

I can't agree more. I just ordered this. I have lg 27gp850 but it doesn't have hdmi2.1. it serves me well since I was using it for my ps5 and not many games utilize vrr. Getting new pc so swapping 27gp850 for pc and this new one for ps5. The lg 27gr83q is at the right price. The exact features that I need. Other monitors are either too big, too expensive, have oled.

Yes, I've had one for awhile now. The most noticeable differences over the older LG models are the better contrast ratio and much less IPS glow.

Just placed an order for two. Not a fan of the stand but I can work with it. As recommended by another user, I used the student discount (10%) and Retailmenot discount (10%, $50 max). Which before taxes should be about $290 per monitor.

IMO the G640A is the better value proposition IF: You aren't using the monitor for console gaming. You don't need the 4-Pole HP Out DTS GP:X feature. If those things do matter, then get the other monitor.

I got the 27G640A-B. I like it but it's mostly tuned for 120-300fps rather than 60hz gaming. The GR83 is older and uses a BOE panel. The G640A is a couple months old, no hard data/independent reviews, and uses an AUO AHVA (IPS)

After one year, they have been pretty good. I do have one dead pixel on the left one that I have on my setup. But you can barely notice it only really when it's really dark.
