Summary

The MSI MAG 272QP QD-OLED X50 has earned strong praise from Reddit's monitor community as one of the best 500Hz QD-OLED options available at its price point. Owners consistently highlight the stunning contrast, instant pixel response, and vibrant colors as a genuine leap over IPS and mini-LED displays. The monitor sits squarely in the competitive gaming sweet spot — particularly for CS2 and other fast-paced titles where 500Hz and near-zero motion blur make a tangible difference. Sentiment is broadly positive, though a vocal minority flags the DP 1.4 port and glossy panel coating as meaningful compromises at this price tier. Overall, Reddit consensus treats it as a near-must-buy for 1440p competitive gamers who want top-tier OLED performance without paying the premium of higher-end alternatives.

Pros

  • 500Hz refresh rate delivers a noticeable smoothness upgrade even from 360Hz, with users describing motion clarity as 'on a whole different level' compared to mini-LED and IPS panels
  • QD-OLED panel offers true blacks, excellent HDR, and vivid colors that first-time OLED owners consistently describe as transformative
  • 15% brighter than previous-gen QD-OLED panels (TrueBlack 500 vs 400 nits peak), making it the most luminous 3rd-gen QD-OLED option in its class
  • Competitive pricing at $599–$750 makes it one of the most value-oriented 500Hz OLED monitors available, with users calling it an 'all-time low' for the panel
  • DP 1.4 + DSC is a non-issue for most owners at 1440p — one user tested both HDMI 2.1 and DP 1.4 DSC extensively and found zero practical difference in everyday gaming
  • Works flawlessly as a first OLED experience, with multiple users switching from ASUS models specifically to avoid coil whine and QC issues they encountered elsewhere

Cons

  • DP 1.4 instead of DP 2.1 is a recurring frustration — enthusiasts point out that competitors like the Gigabyte FO32U2P offer full DP 2.1 bandwidth at around the same price bracket
  • Glossy panel coating causes noticeable reflections in bright or ambient-lit rooms, limiting suitability for setups without lighting control
  • 24.5-inch crop mode is capped at 240Hz (not 500Hz), which disappoints competitive players who specifically want a smaller field of view at maximum refresh rate
  • Uses a 3rd-gen QD-OLED panel despite marketing language suggesting otherwise — lacks the IR proximity sensor found on premium models and misses 4th-gen longevity improvements
  • Some users report occasional VRR/adaptive sync flickering that requires disabling adaptive sync to resolve, pointing to a panel-level quirk rather than a firmware fix
  • White flash artifact when switching browser tabs or skipping video timelines reported by at least one owner — minor but persistent annoyance for non-gaming use

Is 500Hz Actually Worth It at 1440p?

Reddit owners confirm the jump from 360Hz to 500Hz is perceptible — not just a spec sheet number. Users coming from 240Hz call the motion clarity upgrade 'insane,' while those already on 360Hz admit the gap is smaller. The consensus: if you play fast shooters regularly, you'll feel it.

The Best QD-OLED Under $800 — With One Catch

The MAG 272QP X50 undercuts rivals while matching their panel performance, but MSI shipping DP 1.4 instead of DP 2.1 on a near-$800 monitor continues to irritate power users. For most 1440p gamers DSC is irrelevant, but the omission feels deliberate at this price tier.

First-Time OLED Owners Are Its Biggest Fans

Users upgrading from IPS or mini-LED panels are consistently the most enthusiastic voices in every thread — describing the contrast and response time as 'unbeatable.' Those already on OLED are more measured, but still largely satisfied. The monitor shines hardest for those making their first OLED jump.

Their DP 2.1 version comes out a few months later for $50 more.

Another 10% more brightness. Assuming the same pace in 5 years oled monitors will finally hit 500 nits full screen and gonna be usable in brightly lit rooms. The progress is still painfully slow though.

Unfortunately this is a 3rd gen panel, the monitor doesn't even have the IR sensor to detect if you're in front of the monitor. MSI should really re-think their naming scheme.

I mean if you need 500hz for CS2, that's about the only use case. Anyone else is better off with something else.

4th gen QD-OLED panels are monsters. A couple more panel generations and I could honestly see a 5 year burn in warranty becoming the new normal.

Dp1.4 again?! On a brand new probably 1000 euro (with the tax) monitor? Yeah, no. Skip. It's 2025, hate me all you want, but come on. It's starting to remind me of 8GB VRAM video cards. Enough is enough. We ain't talking about cheap monitors here, it's top of the top.

It gets brighter in SDR mode than previous QD-OLED generations (250nits avg vs 300) and gets brighter in hdr (around 18-19% brighter). Glossy tandem W-OLED is not available in the US yet, so this monitor is mainly for those who want a qd-oled and care for superior motion clarity due to its refresh rate and/or want higher brightness. $600 is all time low for this panel anyway.

How much do you need a monitor that's both 500Hz and QHD? Do you play competitive games enough to make this worth?

Have you used it? (responding to someone claiming it was too dark — implying the claim is obviously wrong from actual experience)

Having just received a diff monitor with the same panel, I'm not sure I would've switched if I knew the difference between 360Hz and 500Hz. I would keep your $250, 1000%.

Nope, it's the best 500hz monitor out currently. It even beats the new ASUS tandem 540hz which has many issues.

It matches tandem OLED in all window sizes except the tiniest 1-2% brightness windows now. The brightness is not 'dark at all'.

For 1440p DP 1.4 should be enough.

DisplayPort 1.4 is 32Gbps bandwidth, 2.1 is around 80Gbps. As soon as you push past 360hz even on lower resolutions, your GPU will activate DSC — a controversial compression technology which some swear by and some swear against.

I have a 360hz monitor and even at like 180-200, the motion clarity is absurd because OLEDs have amazing pixel response time.

Potential down side: it has glossy coating, so if your room has a lot of ambient light it can make blacks look washed out.

I have tried A LOT of OLED monitors and really like MSI ones, especially the 500hz ones (MPG and MAG).

I have this monitor and it's great. If you don't care about it being 3rd gen panel, DP 1.4, and glossy — it's awesome.

Its a great OLED. If you are willing to spend $800 you get one of the few 500Hz monitors available on the market. If you have a 50-series card that can do multi-frame gen you'll be able to really take advantage of that 500Hz.

I have to crank the brightness down tremendously at night because of how bright this monitor is, especially with whites which give my eyes floaties. Calling it 'dark' is inaccurate to say the least.

Its my first and most likely only OLED in a long time. Its nice and definitely a step up from my ASUS 1080p IPS 280hz monitor. What they say about OLED is definitely true. Blacks are black, contrast is great, response time is instant, and no complaints on clarity. My room is really dark with blacked out windows so I don't have any of the common complaints about qd-oled getting washed out.

Good monitor! I had it for a week and a half and I got the RE9 code so I can vouch for both! It still feels decently bright even coming from an 1100 nit mini LED.

The first thing I notice is the response time of OLED is just unbeatable and the 2nd was how enjoyable HDR in OLED is — it's not offensive like it was with my previous monitor. Coming from a mini-LED, the motion clarity is on a whole different level.

Mine is tremendously better than the 271QRX I returned in almost every way — no more vertical banding in dim areas, much brighter, more accurate color, much better gamma and color temp options, slightly less color fringing on text.

Regarding 2K/500hz, it's an amazing monitor. Personally I tried the Asus tandem OLED 540hz model and it was terrible. The grey banding and noise is not justified at $1000+. If you don't have a 2.1 GPU probably get the MAG. I have a 5090 and out the box it looks great and 0 banding issues.

The AI features/RF sensor thing didn't really work for me at all, even with firmware updated. I also get a weird white (sometimes dark red) flicker when switching tabs in any browser or switching around windows/folders — it's extremely annoying.

I just bought this monitor today and I am very upset that I can't play true stretched at 500hz. I know I should have done more research but it's just disappointing.

It works flawlessly and has great colours for gaming and movies. I spent the whole weekend testing it. I would give it a solid 9 though it's a bit more expensive than my previous purchase.

My first model arrived damaged and I returned it. Before that I tried it and did not notice any VRR problems, but for the replacement the flickering is horrible and I had to turn adaptive sync off.

Does the 24.5" mode work on full 500hz? The MSI website says 24.5 mode up to 240hz, so I am confused.
