Summary

The MSI MAG 274QF X24 is a budget-friendly 1440p 240Hz IPS monitor that has attracted a lot of attention from value-seekers, largely because its specs-to-price ratio seems almost too good to be true. Reddit sentiment is generally positive among those who actually bought it, with most casual users reporting satisfaction with color quality and responsiveness after upgrading from older 1080p or 144Hz panels. However, a vocal minority has flagged real concerns including significant IPS backlight bleed, dimness out of the box, and the fact that 240Hz only works over DisplayPort — HDMI caps at 144Hz. The monitor also lacks the stand versatility of pricier alternatives, and there are essentially no professional reviews available, which has left many buyers going in blind. It's a solid pick for everyday gamers who aren't obsessive about panel quality, but enthusiasts may find the compromises hard to ignore.

Pros

  • 1440p 240Hz IPS panel at around £200/€160-200 — dramatically undercuts competitors offering similar specs by £50-100
  • FreeSync Premium certified with DP 1.4a, making it compatible with both AMD and Nvidia setups without needing G-Sync certification
  • Colors praised by multiple owners as vibrant and noticeably better than VA or older IPS panels, especially those upgrading from 1080p
  • Zero issues reported by several long-term owners (2-5 months of use) covering ghosting, dead pixels, and general reliability
  • Ships with a DisplayPort 1.4 cable included, so you're ready to run full 240Hz out of the box without extra purchases
  • 10-bit color support (8-bit + FRC) available at reduced refresh rates, giving content creators a usable HDR-adjacent option

Cons

  • HDMI is hard-capped at 144Hz — you must use DisplayPort to reach 240Hz, which catches buyers off guard and isn't clearly communicated upfront
  • Significant backlight bleed reported by at least one owner who returned the unit, with a visible white shadow in the corner and glow along the top edge — worse than a budget ASUS IPS costing half the price
  • Some users report the display looks dim and dull out of the box, with no clear settings guide available online to fix calibration
  • Stand is basic and non-adjustable — no height, pivot, or swivel — a step down from MSI's own older MAG 274QRFW which offered more ergonomic flexibility
  • DP 1.4a bandwidth limits 10-bit color to a maximum of 200Hz at 1440p; hitting 240Hz requires dropping to 8-bit, which may matter for color-sensitive work
  • Virtually no professional reviews or benchmarks exist, meaning buyers are relying entirely on scattered Reddit anecdotes with no objective panel measurements to verify claims

Gets the Job Done — But Setup Has a Hidden Trap

Multiple Reddit users discovered too late that 240Hz requires DisplayPort, not HDMI. It's technically documented, but the monitor ships without making this obvious, and several buyers spent time troubleshooting before figuring it out.

The Monitor Reddit Can't Stop Asking About — Because Nobody's Reviewed It

Thread after thread asks the same question: 'why are there no reviews of this thing?' The absence of professional coverage has made Reddit the de facto review source, and opinions range from 'zero issues after months of use' to 'returned it immediately due to backlight bleed.'

Casual Gamers Love It. Enthusiasts Are Skeptical.

Users upgrading from old 1080p or VA panels tend to be impressed. But monitor enthusiasts who dig into specs point out bandwidth limitations, stand quality, and the lottery-like nature of IPS bleed at this price point — suggesting your satisfaction may depend heavily on what you're coming from.

You need a DisplayPort cable, you can't use HDMI to get 240Hz.

You need a DP (DisplayPort) cable instead of HDMI to reach 240Hz.

Kinda wild how an older, cheaper monitor can sometimes feel way better. Hope your next upgrade turns out more solid!

I honestly have no idea why it's so cheap and why there's still no good reviews. I've had zero issues, upgraded from a VA 1080p 240hz and the IPS 2k makes it look beautiful, no issues with ghosting etc.

I have the older MSI mag 27" and have to say it's doing some wild stuff. When cool it looks like someone punched it and it takes around 10 mins to clear the image. My friend has the successor and has the same experience. Be wary of MSI.

I bought this monitor from Newegg this week and I immediately noticed issues. When you move in game, everything looks blurry. It may be a ghosting issue in addition, I can't really tell, but when you stand still to take a closer look, and move your mouse you can see clearly some oddities. When looking at shadows or lines that create shadows, the colors flicker (disappear or reappear) or whites and blacks (specifically lines) get longer or shorter.

I went for MSI MAG 274QF X24, arrived yesterday (199€ from local online shop in Poland). It's 240Hz, has DP 1.4a, has better color coverage (colors look really great), and has definitely FreeSync Premium. Works flawlessly, really happy with value I got. Also 240Hz give more headroom for frame gen usage to stay within max refresh rate for FreeSync.

Sorry for late reply. So far it's been fantastic. Great display, good colors, fantastic refresh rate and response time, perfect.

I bought it and have been using it for about a week. I have to admit, I'm not satisfied. It seems dim, and I don't notice the upgrade I should have noticed when going from FHD 165Hz to this 2K 240Hz display. I've tried changing a thousand settings, but I can't find a suitable one.

I bought it for €160. It seemed strange to me that it cost so little. I took it immediately. The alternatives were AOC at €180 and Asus and LG but we were already going up to €250-300.

The monitor is ok but there is slight delay when switching between PC and HDMI devices. Also no volume control for external speakers connected to the 3.5mm jack.

The only catch is the DP port in the monitor is 1.4a which is not enough for 1440p 10bit (8 bit + FRC) 240hz. If you really want to use 10bit (8 bit + FRC) you gotta lower your refresh rate down to 200. Really good monitor for its price though.

DSC doesn't show as an option on the monitor so I can't use it.

I was looking at this one and apparently it's garbage. Maybe someone can explain why because I barely know what I'm talking about but when I dove in, I found a bunch of people talking crap about it.

If you're not a hardcore monitor enthusiast, it's probably great. I have a 1080p monitor by MSI that I've used for years and it's great.

It's much more noticeable with the lights off. The monitor on the left is an amazing 100€ IPS from ASUS (it has back bleed but it's uniform and completely bearable) and on the right it's this MSI piece of crap with a huge white shadow on the left down corner and in the top margin you can see like 2 or 3 dots of white. When I'm viewing stuff with horizontal black bars like streams etc it's extremely annoying.

What matters is if it affects you during usage. You won't be staring at a black screen. I've used what is apparently poor bleed but it became invisible during usage. Don't torment yourself needlessly.

According to the specification of the monitor on the MSI site it needs DisplayPort for 240Hz, HDMI is 144 only.

A 1440p 240hz monitor for $200 does sound suspiciously cheap. That specific MSI model might be an older panel or refurbished at that price. I'd probably look at more established options.

Go for an IPS monitor any day of the week over a TN monitor.

Yes you can use 1080p 240hz and 1440p 200hz but I recommend just use 1440p 240hz 8bit.

For the game I play, I sort of need 240Hz. I'm competitive and the game caps off at 240fps so I want the best I can get. I noticed I typed the wrong currency, I meant pounds not dollars.

Is it not just that your GPU doesn't support DSC? Why isn't the bandwidth enough?

Will 10bit work at 240Hz if the resolution is lowered to 1080p? I mean if in an online shooter I set 1080p to play at 240Hz, and in other games where high refresh rate isn't as important I keep 2K at 200Hz.

I heard a lot of good feedback about IPS but many also say that a lot of competitive shooters pros use TN panels mostly. Have you tried both IPS and TN monitors in a competitive shooter? What did you feel?

I am also planning to buy this MSI 2K monitor. But could not find any review or YouTube video yet. Or should I go for the cheaper ViewSonic VX2723-2K-PRO-2 180Hz IPS panel gaming monitor instead?
