Summary

The MSI PRO MP223 E2 is a budget-tier 21.45-inch VA panel monitor targeting users who need a no-frills 1080p display for office work, light gaming, or as a secondary screen. Reddit sentiment is mixed — users in tight budget markets (particularly India) find it a reasonable value, while Western users often point out that similarly-priced options offer better panels or higher refresh rates. It's generally accepted as 'good enough' for productivity and casual gaming, but enthusiasts consistently steer buyers toward IPS alternatives. The monitor works well for long hours of general use, with minimal eye strain reported, but the VA panel limitations show up in fast motion and dark scenes.

Pros

  • 100Hz refresh rate at its price point is a genuine advantage over many competing budget monitors that cap at 75Hz
  • Clean minimal design with slim bezels makes it a good secondary monitor that doesn't clash with a primary setup
  • Easy setup with standard power cord — no proprietary or oversized plugs like some competitors ship
  • Text clarity and color reproduction are consistently rated as solid for the price range by productivity users
  • HDMI 1.4b and DisplayPort 1.2a both included, giving flexibility for different source devices
  • Eye-friendly screen earns real praise from users working 8+ hour sessions without noticeable strain

Cons

  • VA panel produces noticeable ghosting in fast-paced games — users with 165Hz+ IPS monitors for the same price have called this out directly
  • No built-in speakers, which surprises buyers expecting audio output at this price tier
  • Headphone jack output volume is reported as unusually low — multiple users confirmed weak audio even at max volume
  • Stand lacks height adjustment and rotation — portrait mode requires a third-party VESA mount
  • Some dual-monitor setups report compatibility issues: monitor not powering on or picture freezing when paired with another display
  • At this size and panel type, the value case weakens if budget can stretch even slightly — 27-inch IPS monitors are available in similar price ranges

The Headphone Jack Problem Nobody Warns You About

Multiple owners independently discovered the 3.5mm output is unusually quiet — even maxed out, it underperforms compared to laptops and other monitors. MSI doesn't advertise audio as a feature, but buyers connecting speakers or headphones directly are consistently disappointed.

Budget Monitor or Budget Trap? Depends Where You're Shopping

In markets like India where the MP223 E2 lands under ₹5,000, users call it a genuine upgrade over aging 60Hz displays. In Western markets at £49–$60, the same money can buy a 165Hz IPS panel — which reframes the value proposition entirely.

Video Editors Are Actually Using This as a Primary Monitor

Despite being marketed as an office display, some users doing video editing and 3D work have switched it to their main screen. The caveat: color grading work is where the VA panel shows its limits, and those users acknowledge you'd need to spend more for accurate color work.

Blacks and gradients are just okay. you can't expect OLED level blacks in this price range and for day to day usages it is good. I wouldn't recommend if you are into Colour grading, then you might have to consider something else and above 15k budget as well. but for this 5k price the blacks and color are good and for long hours it is a great monitor

Yeah it could easily be second monitor. Just keep it mind that it doesn't come with Rotation Capabilities so can't use it as Vertical Monitor unless you go ahead with third-party Vesa Mounts!

I bought mp223 and had tons of problems with it. If you have 2 monitors, and one of them is mp223, there are issues like monitors not turning on and picture freezing.

just also bought the same monitor and have the same problem with the audio. it might just be how the monitor is made. any speaker i connect outputs a low volume.

Most the time the price of a 100hz monitor like that you can get a 165 ish Hz monitor for the same price. I was looking and got a Samsung g4 27inch for the same price as one of those 100hz

No. It's small. You should find a 24 or preferably a 27in. Also this is a VA panel. Find an IPS panel instead for better picture quality (a little pricier). Unless this is free or very very cheap, you will be immensely underwhelmed.

It's terrible just like any other cheapo VA monitor. It also has a ton of ghosting.

Yes, HDMI or DisplayPort will give better results. You need to return that monitor and get one that has a DisplayPort port. Preferably an IPS monitor since VA monitors at that price are terrible.

Thanks. Probably is the way they're designed then. I just turn the volume up the amplifier! I'm not sure if some headphones are better than others; I tried a couple and they were just as bad as each other.

It's a business class monitor anyways. It's not gonna get very loud I'm sure. And since they do not advertise it as a feature, it means whatever is in there is usually cheap.

Lowering the refresh rate in the display settings fixed the horizontal lines issue for me.

Artifacts like this are generally due to some kind of hardware failure on the monitor side. What fixes it is going to be specific to your monitor and how it happens to be failing.

I noticed that 22 inch IPS is better than 24 in the matter of details and blurriness. I have a Samsung 24 75hz IPS but I'm planning to move to MSI pro 225 IPS.

Do you think this would work well as a second monitor?
