Summary

The MSI PRO MP225 is a budget 21.5-inch IPS monitor targeting users who need a reliable, no-frills display for casual use, light gaming, or office work without spending much. Reddit sentiment is generally positive for the price point — most owners consider it a solid entry-level choice when alternatives in the same range offer little improvement. The monitor's main appeal is the combination of IPS panel, 100Hz refresh rate, and a price tag that often dips below $60-70 USD. It's frequently recommended in Southeast Asian markets like the Philippines and India where budget options are limited, but enthusiasts consistently push buyers to stretch for 165Hz+ monitors if at all possible.

Pros

  • IPS panel at a budget price — delivers noticeably better colors and viewing angles than VA alternatives at the same tier, making it a genuine upgrade for users coming from cheap VA or TN panels
  • 100Hz refresh rate with Adaptive-Sync support gives a smoother experience than standard 60Hz monitors for casual gaming and everyday use
  • 1ms response time listed on spec sheet, making it acceptable for fast-paced titles like Valorant and League of Legends at this price bracket
  • Compact 21.5-inch 1080p size is suitable for small desks or as a secondary monitor for Discord, browsing, or mobile testing
  • MSI brand reliability compared to off-brand alternatives provides some buyer confidence, with sellers like SM Mall offering easier in-person returns
  • EyeCare features and solid default image quality noted by first-time monitor buyers switching from older displays

Cons

  • No DisplayPort — only HDMI and VGA, which limits connectivity options for modern builds and rules out high-refresh-rate chaining
  • No VESA mount support on some variants (notably the 24-inch version), making portrait mode and arm mounting impossible — a recurring complaint in deal threads
  • 250 nits max brightness is below average even for budget monitors, making it less usable in bright rooms or with HDR content
  • At $60-70 USD, it sits in a tier where the jump to 165Hz monitors is roughly double the price — users consistently advised to save up rather than buy this if 165Hz is achievable
  • Some units reported defects including a vertical green line appearing after less than 2 weeks of use, raising quality control concerns
  • Adaptive-Sync compatibility with NVIDIA GPUs is unclear for some users — at least one RTX 3060 Ti owner couldn't get it working in Nvidia control panel settings

No DisplayPort, No VESA: The Spec Sheet Surprises

Beyond the IPS and 100Hz selling points, the MP225 skips DisplayPort entirely (HDMI and VGA only) and some versions lack VESA mounting holes — details that catch buyers off guard and limit long-term flexibility.

The Budget IPS Sweet Spot — or a Stepping Stone?

Reddit consistently frames the MP225 as the best option at its price, not the best monitor period. Enthusiasts are near-unanimous: if you can stretch to 165Hz, do it. If you genuinely can't, this is where to land.

Southeast Asia's Go-To Office Monitor Has a Reddit Following

Much of the MP225's real-world discussion comes from Philippines and India subreddits where it's one of the few IPS 100Hz options under ₱5,000 — a niche where it clearly wins, even if global enthusiasts barely notice it.

"Productivity" 16:9. When can 16:10 make a comeback for productivity's sake

This is about as cheap as you're going to get unless you find a used one on Facebook Marketplace or something like that. This is a decent monitor for grandma.

Has adaptive sync and, surprisingly, HDR. Although I probably wouldn't use HDR with it's 250 nuts brightness rating 😂

I'm sure this monitor only has one global backlight which means it can't adjust brightness on a per pixel or even per area basis so isn't actually doing HDR in a useful way even if it can take an HDR signal.

If you can find it, I recommend the MSI Pro MP273A. Equally no frills, 100Hz IPS FHD but 27" and $99 and has VESA mount holes. I use 2 for work, so it only ever has Teams and spreadsheets open, so I can't say if it's any good for games.

24inch 165hz+ cost twice as a 75hz 21.5 inch much in America as well. It's twice the monitor and it's worth it every penny. Save up until you can get the 24inch 165. I recently made the switch from TN to IPS. Not as big of a deal as I expected. If you get the 100hz ips I don't think you'll see a night and day difference. You will see a night and day difference if you go to 165hz.

for gaming or productivity? if for gaming, you can get Titan Army P2510G IPS 180hz (4.5k) or Koorui G2411P IPS 200hz (4.8k) right now sa shopee. if for productivity naman nasa 4-4.2k range, get Viewsonic VA2432-H or Koorui E2411H or LG 24MR400B or Samsung LS24C330 or MSI Pro MP251 or Lenovo L24i-4A. onting add nalang you can get a better monitor butttt if di talaga kaya to extend. Go for MSI Pro MP225 IPS

Sometimes you need "just a monitor" and the days of included the in box cheap basic monitors everywhere are gone.

See I don't know anyone else who does portrait mode on one of their monitors, but it's really useful. I use it so I can have a ton of text on a single page or read comments when I have a YouTube video set a page with at the top.

I just bought the MP225 today for ₱2,900 from techwarez in Shopee. After a lot of research, I chose it because it offers the best value among 100 Hz monitors. The color quality is also pretty good. don't buy the mp225v because it's a VA panel choose the ips version.

I did; I am no expert, but we noticed an immediate improvement in brightness and quality... But bear in mind the point of comparison is the old monitor of 10-12 years. (Dad's retired and I am self-employed, so it's not even like we have anything other than his even older laptop for comparison.) And it clearly was the old monitor going, since we've had zero problems with it since replacing it.

That range is almost the lowest tier available today, with the exception of it being 100hz instead of 60hz, but I'm pretty sure they just manage to overclock the same panels that used to be 60hz, so its no added cost. At that price range most will be similar, so you can't really go wrong or right. I'd say go for what's cheaper keeping the 100hz (that guarantees its a newer panel) and the color fidelity will be roughly the same as this one or any other in that bracket.

I bought mp223 and had tons of problems with it. If you have 2 monitors, and one of them is mp223, there are issues like monitors not turning on and picture freezing.

I currently have one and it's a decent monitor for its price, with 100hz and 1ms response time, the downside is that it uses a VA panel, which is more prone to ghosting (but it doesn't seem to be that obvious)

I have this monitor and it works fine, however I haven't been able to enable the adaptive sync. I enabled it in the monitor settings but I can't find it in any nvidia app settings. Is it only available for amd gpus? Im using an rtx 3060 ti

My MP225 didn't have any IPS glow, if I remember correctly, but my MP225 developed a vertical green line after just 8 days of use. So, I requested a refund, and Techwarez approved it. It seems to be an isolated case, since a Redditor who also bought the same monitor from Techwarez didn't have any issues. I decided to buy from sm mall instead of Shopee, so it would be easier to return the monitor if there's a problem.

250 nits max is pretty bad. It'll be good if you work in light mode.

BTW I just bought the MP225. The monitor is quite good but not worth switching from 75hz in your case. Save up some money and go for 165hz.

No. It's small. You should find a 24 or preferably a 27in. Also this is a VA panel. Find an IPS panel instead for better picture quality (a little pricier). Unless this is free or very very cheap, you will be immensely underwhelmed.

I noticed that 22 ips is better than 24 in the matter of details and blurriness. I hv a samsung 24 75hz ips but im planning to move to msi pro 225 ips.
